Best Buy Releases List of 50 Stores to be Closed, Many by May 12

by: | posted 04.16.12 | News

If you follow us on Twitter, you probably saw this over the weekend, but we wanted to make sure all of our tech-obsessed readers were in the loop. Since Best Buy didn’t post the greatest Q4 earnings numbers, they have decided to close a bunch of their big box stores in 2012 – 50 to be exact. Over the weekend – probably to sneak by the media – they released a list of the stores, many of which will close by May 12.

It’s not specifically Android-related, but we know that many of you buy your phones and keep up with tech via Best Buy. Some of you may have a harder time doing that if one of the stores on this list was your closest. Missing from the list are two stores that already closed in Kansas City, MO and Scottsdale, AZ.

Meizu MX Announced as World’s First Phone to Use Samsung’s Exynos 4412 Quad-core Processor

by: | posted 04.16.12 | News

Normally we would ignore a phone like the Meizu MX Quad-core out of China, but when it was announced last night claiming that it is the world’s first to sport the new Exynos 4412 processor by Samsung and will be out by June, we were interested. The phone itself sounds awesome with a f/2.2 8MP camera, 292ppi display, and Android 4.0, however, the draw is clearly the chipset. How is it that the Meizu MX is going to be the first Exynos 4412 phone and not one from Samsung? Shouldn’t this be the chipset inside the Galaxy SIII?

Motorola Switching to Snapdragon S4 Processors For Next Lineup of Phones, Including the RAZR HD?

by: | posted 04.16.12 | News

Motorola may follow HTC’s lead in the processor game going into 2012 according to a new benchmark for a device headed to AT&T. The MB886 (formerly rumored by us to be the Dinara) aka the “Qinara” or possibly even Atrix 3 posed for GLBenchmark this morning, giving us a look at specs for Moto’s next big device.

As you can see from the top, it’s running Android 4.0.3 just like every other new device these days. What’s interesting though, is the chipset used is Qualcomm’s MSM8960 or better known to most as the dual-core Snapdragon S4 clocked at 1.5GHz. This is the same chipset used in the HTC One XL that could arrive on AT&T in the next week, but is surprising because this is Motorola using it. In the past, Moto has stayed close with TI and their OMAP series and even cozied up with NVIDIA for a device or two. This would be a first for them and Qualcomm, to our knowledge.

Pebble E-paper Watch for Android Tops $3 Million in Funding on Kickstarter, Will Now Come Fully Waterproofed

by: | posted 04.16.12 | News

If the smartwatch game has yet to impress you, then I recommend that you take a look at one of the hottest Kickstarter products we have seen in a long time called Pebble. We have been personally following Pebble for the last week or so, watching it go from having a goal of $100K, eclipsing that in a few days, and then completely blowing the hell up thanks to some press coverage and viral internet buzz. In less than a day last week, it topped $1 million from backers, then hit $2 million, and finally, over the weekend cracked the $3 million mark. Again, this project started out with a $100K goal and is now well over $3 million.

Transformer Prime GPS Dongle Pictured, Invites to Order One Sent Out

by: | posted 04.16.12 | News

The Asus Transformer Prime, by all accounts, is still the best Android tablet on the market (our review). It boasts a quad-core processor, amazing screen, great build materials, the top tablet camera around, and docking abilities that would make any tech device jealous. Unfortunately for some that wish to use it as a massive navigation system, Asus chose to spend as little time as possible making the GPS work correctly. After multiple attempts to fix it via software update, they decided that the only way to make it truly functional was through the addition of a GPS dongle.

With an acknowledgement of said dongle by Asus, we have been sitting here waiting for news of a release. Well, this morning, invites to request a dongle were sent out to Prime owners in an offer that expires on July 31st. Along with those invites, a set of leaked pictures made their way onto the web, giving us an idea as to how hideous your Prime will be with this thing attached. Yep, I said hideous.

Samsung Sets Date to Unveil the “Next Galaxy” – May 3 in London, We Get to See the Galaxy SIII

by: | posted 04.16.12 | News

Now this is what you call official. After months and months of rumors, Samsung has dropped an official invite and date into our inbox. The “next Galaxy” which we all believe will be the Galaxy SIII, will be unveiled on May 3 in London at a Samsung Unpacked event. This is big, people. If there was one device that we have all been looking forward to, this would be it. We have no idea what specs will be inside, but rumors have it running a quad-core Exynos, with a ceramic case, HD Super AMOLED Plus display, wireless charging, and so much more. If it pushes boundaries at all like the Galaxy SII did last year, you will want to save your money for this one.

Oh, and since they are doing this in London, the Samsung team was nice enough to offer a live stream through their Facebook page. Yeah, we all get to tune in and witness it. If I did the time calculation correctly, it will go live at 11AM Pacific.

DROID Bionic Update to Build 5.9.904 is on the Way to Testers, Here is the Changelog

by: | posted 04.14.12 | News

The next update for the DROID Bionic is build number 5.9.904 and is not Ice Cream Sandwich. A friend of ours sent over the changelog for it that we have pasted for you below. You can see that behind-the-scenes bug fixes are all that is in store, which makes sense going from .902 to .904. In fact, when Verizon posts this changelog after testers have it, it likely won’t have any of these details on it, so take in this rare opportunity to see what backend bugs are being taken care of.

Update:  Our buddy Sam has told us that if you update to .904, you can still use the .902 fastboot files to return to .902 or to save your phone should you do something that it doesn’t like.
