Each phone also runs a Snapdragon 835 processor in the US with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. They’ll feature 12MP (f/1.7) rear cameras, 8MP front cameras, USB Type-C ports, and the latest version of Samsung’s skin on top of Android Nougat.

Since Samsung and LG are changing aspect ratio we need to start showing a stat for screen area.

A 2×1 AR screen has about 6.3% less screen area than a same diagonal sized traditional 16×9 AR screen.
Effectively it’s even more of a difference if viewing 16×9 content on a 2×1 display (black bars take up a bit).

The 5.8″ GS screen is 13.52 square inches. That’s about the same as a 5.6″ 16×9 screen.

The 6.2″ version has a bit over 20% more screen area than the 5.8″, but with the obvious trade-off of larger dimensions.

All in all while I haven’t used any of them yet, I think I like the 2×1 AR change. It will make reading text easier, and holding the phone one handed easier. For years I’ve been talking about the width being the most important figure for one handed use. Specifically saying under 70mm is key, or 68-69 ideally. Props to Samsung for hitting this perfectly at 68 (for comparison the original Moto x was 65). This is a full 1.5mm less wide than last year’s 5.1″ GS7, yet includes a screen with the area of a “5.6 incher”. Impressive.

Of course they’re quite a bit taller, sure, but at least these new “candy bar” phones will be easier to hold in one hand.

First I’ll buy an fire extinguisher an then order the phone. More interesting news updates on S8… http://mobilenewsflash.com/#search/galaxy%20s8

  • William_Morris

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Samsung is doing what I want in a smart phone… got ride of that F***ing home button, and kept the headphone jack on the bottom… SWEET!

  • CoolSilver

Looks good. Too bad never see any of this in a Pixel format

  • Jay Ward

No front facing dual speakers? Super /s

  • John

Samsung is such a coward /s

  • Godzilla

TouchWiz will still slow it down after a month and when the next Android version comes out it’ll be 4-6 months wait.

    • atc-tech

The next version is already out. 7.1.1 is the standard, but these come with only 7.0?

  • Daniel Moshee

    Mehh.

  • MLSD

Anyone know if both the S8 and S8+ have the exact same curved screen as the Note 7 which was less of a curve than the S7 Edge?

  • ZT

Is it Quick Charge 3.0 or 4.0 capable? Can’t find this mentioned anywhere.

  • Synacks

I’m wondering if that 3000mah battery will be a step down from my S7 Edge 3600mah battery. Hardware wise, obviously, but will the software and 835 make up for it?

    • M3D1T8R

The 10nm snap835 should more than make up for it.
Still disappointed in the battery size though.

  • Tomek G

If I read it, right, waterproof? Only thing I wish it had would be physical home button, removable battery and solid software support, but can’t have everything.

    • Octotron

They mentioned that there was a home button embedded under the screen that had tactile feedback.

  • eltahur

WHY is the s8 so BIG??? I thought the whole purpose of edge displays was to keep phones in the same size but increase the screen size? I guess for those of us who want a flagship phone in a manageable size, we are still only left with the iPhone option

    • Josh LaCelle

You are obviously a troll or an idiot. Either way, the above comment doesn’t make any sense!

      • Synacks

chill out, he’s asking a simple question. there are many of us that would’ve enjoyed a 5.5″ S8 around the same size as the regular non-edge S7. I have the S7 Edge and personally want a smaller phone.

        • Raven ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

There are even some of us who be very happy with a 5″ screen with the smallest surrounding phone possible.
I went from a 4.7″ screen to a 5.5″ screen and I would actually like to go back a little smaller.

          • Synacks

I would be VERY ok with a 5″ version of the S8 with the same specs.

        • Grayson

The S8 is actually narrower than the smaller non-edge S7. Thickness and weight are the same. The S8 is just a bit taller than the non-edge S7 (6mm, not much). Overall, about the same size.

  • Armaan Modi

    the batteries look paltry.

    • M3D1T8R

Yeah, if these had 1Ah more I might consider then. They’ll prolly hit something like 6 hours screen time thanks to the Snap 835’s 10nm, but that doesn’t cut it any more. I’m not settling for under 12 hrs screen on time for my next. Current ZTE Blade V8 Pro is excellent with 8+ hours but I’ll be upgrading to the ZenFone 3 Zoom with 5Ah, should make it over 12 hrs.

      • Armaan Modi

Yes, I use my phone all the time ,so my Xiaomi Redmi Note 3’s 4000mah battery is also not sufficient for me.

  • And you can swap the back button to the left with software in the settings

  • alberteezy

Damn this year’s flagships are looking amazing.

  • Josh LaCelle

    Are there really stereo speakers?

  • MadMartigan

    Fast Charge.

    Yeah. QC 2.0. Ugh…

    • BStockTech

No way – SD 835 is capable of 4.0 – someone please confirm!

      • MadMartigan

Confirmed on the other Android site i their S7/S73 vs. S8/S8+ comparison article (don’t want to link to competition, hopefully that’s enough info for you to find it).

That doesn’t come with any improved charging speed, though – Samsung is sticking with its Quick Charge 2.0-based Adaptive Fast Charging technology again this year to ensure maximum compatibility with legacy accessories.

        • BStockTech

If true – that’s insane. All QC products are backward compatible.

Dealbreaker – as my current Note 4 features the same 2.0 technology

  • Any confirmation that this features quick charge 4.0?

    • Ronald

even though the 835 supports QC 4.0, its up to the manufacturer to support it

  • Disqus

Will the Chinese version work on US carriers? Specifically, Verizon?

  • The Doctor

Does it have iris scanning/facial recognition capabilities?

  • ChrisI

    Whelming

    • Drew Landgrave

      I am very whelmed

  • BryceAlmighty

Boy did Samsung design this phone well. Depending on the reviews, how the software performs, and what Google does for the next Pixel, this may be my first Galaxy S phone.

  • Buck

So is this the first phone that’s finally faster than the one plus?

  • Raven ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

This is the first Samsung phone that I would actually own. Finally, no physical home button! But, still waiting for word on the Pixel 2.0. Google better bring it.

    • Jérôme Besnard

It looks very good and I know what you mean when compared to the Pixel. But I just got my wife the Pixel and it does not matter what the phone looks like once you turn it on and start using it. I’ve used Nexus phones from the beginning (currently rocking a N6P) but the Pixel is so much better with the software that I know it is going be my next phone.

  • Jon

What about the 1000fps video rumor and at what resolution?

  • akhnaten

    Yay…headphone jack!!!!!

  • Regorian
  • Hunter King

Damn, I loved that the S7 was still relatively compact. Guess that’s over.

    • WiscoNative

It’s ~1/4 inch taller, 0.1mm thicker and actually narrower than the S7.

    • Colin Huber

      This is a weird comment.

    • Grayson

What, did you look at the screen size and not the actual dimensions of the phone? The S8 is about the same physical size as the S7. Only very slightly taller, and narrower even.

  • Corey Dimick

I’m still not regretting my G6 purchase. Coming from a G7E, and a Nexus 6 before that, I cannot tell you how excited I am to go back to a flat front.

    • usrnamemike

I’m considering getting the g6 I have the S7 edge now. What do you like about it? And what did you have before?

      • Corey Dimick

My G6 on Sprint is actually being delivered today so I cannot speak on that yet. I’ve had the S7 Edge since day 1, and while it’s a great phone, I just want a change. Couldn’t resist the free Google Home and 49′ HDTV promo.

      • Tyler Durden

Don’t. That’s all I’ll say. Or try it out.

    • Craiggles

I’d buy this or likely the note 8 if it came with a flat front and back. but without…no. #edgesucks

    • Murphy’s Magnet

Quick Charge 4.0. 5 Hours in 5 minutes. Batteries can be smaller.

      • Eric

Has QC 4.0 been confirmed? I know the 835 supports it, but a leak a while back showed Samsung shipping the phone with their typical fast charger that has shipped with its flagships since the S6 (QC 2.0 speeds)

        • Captain Insano

That makes no sense if the S7 has qc 3.0

          • Tyler Durden

            nope, only had QC 2.0

          • Eric

It does not and neither did the Note 7. The S7 and Note 7 shipped with the same fast charger that supports QC 2.0 speeds.

          • Captain Insano

            I stand corrected. 🙂

          • BStockTech

            No it doesn’t – the S7 has 2.0 QC

      • ChrisI

And that does me good how if I’m on the boat all day? Or out fishing? Or hiking?

        • Murphy’s Magnet

You could join the current century and get a portable charger.

          • Dale

You make a good point. I still don’t see why batteries aren’t 4000 mAh, especially with how thin these phones are, but the reality is that a tiny portable battery can provide you with an extra 12-24 hours of charge.

          • Murphy’s Magnet

Plus you have battery saving options on Samsung devices. That portable charger could give you up to 72 hours of life for the phone.

          • ChrisI

WTF….Seriously bro? I need to buy ANOTHER product to subsidize this $800 technology? Unreal. Not all of us spend all day next a computer and wall outlet.

          • Murphy’s Magnet

I’m sorry the HUGE investment of $25 is too much for you. Maybe you shouldn’t own a boat or you should have bought one with a 12v plug.

Seriously, if you spend all day everyday in remote areas with no access to any kind of power (boat, car, house, office, restaurant, etc.) then I don’t know what to tell you. I’m shocked that a person who lives their life in such a manner doesn’t own a portable charger already. Even if you are just using the phone for an MP3 player there are options to make the phone go all day and sip power when you don’t have access. If that is too much trouble for you then you’ve got more problems than most people can deal with. I travel all over the place just about every day (often in the rocky mountains) and I can’t think of a single time I didn’t have access to a power supply for at least 5 minutes. If you are just looking to bitch that is one thing, but if this is a real problem for you then you need to work some stuff out.

          • disqusdeeznuts

The point is having to carry around a second device to support the first.

          • Murphy’s Magnet

In reality, not everyone needs a portable charger. However, with battery size or life discussions there is always a person or two that talks about how they go off into the wilderness for weeks at a time with no access to electrical power and somehow thinks the manufacturer should have figured out a way to add a 10.21 gigawatt battery to the phone because they are the center of the universe.

Should phones have batteries that last all day? Sure. Will this one under “normal” use? Nobody knows yet. Are there options for Grizzly Adams to keep his phone charged? Yes. Is his bitching valid? Not even remotely.

          • The Doctor

Whining about a portable charger costing $25 but you don’t whine that you also have to purchase a screen protector and a case for your phone.

          • ChrisI

At what point, ANYWHERE, did I “whine” about the price of a portable charger? When did my point have anything to do with the cost of a portable charger?

          • The Doctor

Did you even read your post before commenting?

“I need to buy ANOTHER product to subsidize this $800 technology? Unreal.”

            Whining.

          • ChrisI

I said nothing relating to how much a charger cost, that wasn’t my point. My point is that if I spend $800 on a smartphone, I shouldn’t need to buy an unrelated supplemental product (at whatever the cost) to subsidize the lack of quality in the $800 item. Batteries should be pushing 4000-5000mah these days, not making me a paper-thin phone.

          • Murphy’s Magnet

Why? Because you need it and you’re special? Most of the world isn’t away from power playing Pokemon Go in the wilderness for 2 days. Since most of the world doesn’t need it manufacturers aren’t going to spend the money etc to do it.

Companies want the phone to last a day. Sun up to sun down is the goal because that is what the average person needs. Portable batteries and battery cases are offered for people that don’t fit that mold.

          • Ichigo Uzumaki

he needs to have his phone ready for the selfies for when he brings up the fish he catches…

        • Octotron

*Not enough money for a portable charger*

*Plenty of money for a boat*

          • Murphy’s Magnet

            Strange world

          • ChrisI

I don’t own a boat. But I do own hiking boots. And a fishing pole. And there are family/friends who own boats I may get to spend time on.
You ALL are missing the point though. Cheers.

        • editorinchimp

Even when not going out in the wilderness all day, these batteries don’t last. If I go out for an evening on the town, then I leave home fully charged at around 6 or 7 p.m. and am on a second battery by the time I get home, even if I’m at a movie or concert where the phone is off or otherwise unused for an extended chunk of that. Portable chargers are bulky, slow and whatever cable is used for them ends up dying pretty quickly from all the bending, so those aren’t so useful.

          • ChrisI

Maybe some people can use them, but it’s just *another* product that I need to remember to charge all the time too. Plus, if I’m going away from power for an extended period of time, then the portable charger drains anyway while the phone is being used.

            Stupid suggestions.
Boggles me how consumers care not about fighting for battery LIFE, but arguing battery charging SPEED is all that matters.

    • NeilOMalley

The HTC U Ultra is also larger physically than both phones, though only slightly more than the S8+

    • Tyler Durden

lol because that battery is just fine for the size of the phone.

      • Bobb

        less efficient processor as well?

        • Tyler Durden

that too. U Ultra is just a straight up failure.

      • Brett

Yeah but there have been smaller phones that have much larger batteries. Droid turbo anyone?

I’m currently using the Droid Turbo 2…Worst Android phone I’ve ever owned.

  • Austin Hodak

Dude, the 6.2″ version is basically smaller than my 6P…

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Which is insane. Because I can’t stand the size of my 6p but Samsung did an incredible job with that.

  • Murphy’s Magnet
  • Bobb

was hoping for a surprise with battery. oh well

    • disqusdeeznuts

I’m pretty sure they made them a little smaller to avoid any surprises with the battery…
