I’m sticking with the Echo, I’m sure Home will be something great eventually, but banking on features and usage that is “coming soon” in tech is a losing proposition. Echo has all the features I need now, Home is well behind but may catch up. Google will get there, but I’m not sure the Gen1 Home will be that device.

  • NexusMan

Anyone figure out how to do multiroom sync yet?

  • ShadyBrady

I don’t have one (yet). Just wondering if you’re playing music loud, will it still hear the “OK Google” command?

    • DalvikDroid

Just set mine up. Similar to the Echo, it doesn’t hear it as clearly when the music is very loud – I have to speak a little louder to get over the music.

      • ShadyBrady

        Cool, thanks.

  • mcdonsco

Got mine and the only thing I thought would be a problem is indeed a problem!

    Ok Google.

EDIT: Nevermind. Phone just says “answering on another device”

    SWEET!

    • PerhapsNever

According to Google (and reviewers), that’s not supposed to happen. ArsTechnica (Ron) did a review on it and confirmed that. But, there was a downside; if the phone and Home unit are close, the Home unit always takes precedence. I verified on my Note5 and my Home unit that the Home unit will always answer if it hears me and my phone does show “Answering on another device”.

      • mcdonsco

Maybe you didn’t read the end of my post?

        • PerhapsNever

I didn’t see the edit… LOL That’s happened to me a bunch of times (edit, yet no one sees it)… Sorry.

          • mcdonsco

No sweat, I do it all the time. For some dumb ass reason I tend to edit AFTER clicking post, can’t seem to get in the habit of proofing before I post it.

        • PerhapsNever

How are you liking it compared to Echo? (You and I have had a lot of Echo discussions before).

          • mcdonsco

Haven’t really had a chance to play with it much, been slammed with work since I got it. But, it setup stupid fast and picked up on all my smartthings and harmony stuff instantly, as well as ecobee etc. I also have a chrome cast audio connected to my theater receiver which runs two zones at a time to various built-in speakers in the house and it picked up on all of that config without a hiccup so now I can just say “ok Google turn on home music” then “ok Google, play Korn radio on Pandora to the entire house”…*almost perfect, except, have to do the two separate commands, but it works!

I would imagine as the new assistant matures it will be able to do that on one command, probably a couple updates from now.

          • Major Sceptic

You’re not the only one wanting to change the “ok Google ” key word.
I think most of the planet does.
I just want to call it computer or Fred or Luigi or something , anything but ok Google .

  • NexusMan

And….mine just arrived via UPS from Best Buy….let the fun begin!

  • Brando

That best buy employee accomodation though.. Only paid $32 lol

  • NexusMan

Mine is on a UPS truck right now for delivery withing the next couple hours, from Best Buy. And I applied a free Best Buy giftcard from Samsung Pay, so I paid $128 total, after tax.

    • So a dollar less if ordered from Google, free shipping, no tax.

      • NexusMan

No. When I order from Google there IS tax. And my Google order was scheduled to come next Friday. Best Buy is free shipping also. So, my point is, I got it a week earlier and essentially paid no tax…after tax, it came up to $1 less than the pre-tax price.

  • HollowLog

This is weird, but it’s odd that the Home app isn’t a circular icon.

    • NexusMan

It’s in a white circle just like Google’s other core apps.

      • HollowLog

        Weird. Mine isn’t.

        • Bionic_Pags

Mine isn’t either… just a transparent multicolored “home”

          • NexusMan

That is weird. Funny thing is, before the Pixel came out, I read alot of blogs talking about how the icons on the Pixel Launcher were going to change to circles from their “current” style, and much of my app icons on my Marshmallow running GS7 had already long began updating to circle icons, months ago.

          • Bionic_Pags

Even stranger, i have a GS7 edge as well and i have none of these circle icons (except the new messenger)

          • NexusMan

Do you think it could be carrier related? I have 209 apps and most of them have already been updated to circle icons.

          • NexusMan

I have the icon you have on my Nexus 7. But it’s in a circle on my GS 7.

        • NexusMan

Oh wow. What phone are you using and what version of Android? That is weird.

          • HollowLog

            Pixel XL

          • NexusMan

            Even weirder.

  • raddacle

Fyi guys Target’s return policy is until January 24th so if you’re not sure about it or waiting until a Black Friday or Christmas sale here’s a good oppurtunity

  • Ralph Basile

Mine was delivered this morning. To home. I am at work. So will have to wait a little longer to fire it up.

  • alan taylor

My home device arrived yesterday, and I played with it all night. Music sounds good coming from it. It will get the occaisonal song wrong. The home automation is great tho. Just got my second one at wal mart for the kitchen

    • NexusMan

Where did you order it from? Mine comes within the next 3 hours. I wanted to wait to get a 2nd one.

      • alan taylor

I bought it directly from Google Store.

        • NexusMan

Nice. I cancelled my preorder because it was scheduled to come next Friday.

          • alan taylor

im within 30 mins of the distribution center here in southern california. so it helps. With my Pixel XL, I got on release day and did not even pay extra for delivery. Free ground shipping gets it to me

          • NexusMan

That’s beautiful. I ordered this one for the kitchen initially, but will et another later for the living room. May have to play with the placement, in the meantime, to see where this one would be best suited.

          • alan taylor

thats why i picked up a second one for the kitchen today. That way I dont have to unplug and move it all the time. Its a lot smaller than you expect also. I can see myself having one in every room at some point

          • NexusMan

Yea. I got to play with it a couple weeks ago in the Google Store in NY and was impressed with the size and the sound quality of the speaker…especially with music. The Google rep said that even then, they were continuing to update functionality up to and beyond release.

          • NexusMan

My kitchen is right next to my living room, so I also want to see if it can hear me across rooms.

          • alan taylor

mine couldnt not hear me from the far side of the living to the kitchen but i dont know if that was because of the tv being on. It did hear me from the top of the stairs with no tv on

    • NexusMan

Have you figured out how to play music on multiple devices yet?

      • alan taylor

Yea, go to google home app, go to devices, hit settings for the home device and create new group

        • NexusMan

Yes, I figured it out, but thanks!

          • alan taylor

No problem. How are you liking them?

  • mrc0mments

Forgot to expedite the shipping and it’s not arriving today, but I’ll survive!

    • NexusMan

I expedited the shipping by cancelling my Google preorder and preordering from Best Buy.

  • Bradley Melnyk

Picked up 2 of them, can’t wait to set them up!!!!

    • NexusMan

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

  • James Keleman

Saw it in my local Walmart. Someone bought one was purchasing one when I was there too

  • Riverjao

Mine was on my doorstep early this morning 👍

  • cdm283813

The early reviews are saying that it’s not a must buy and that Echo may be better. What’s the opinion here?

    • Brett Wcislo

It just came out, most people say that because Echo supports more right now, which is true. But expect for a wider range of support coming soon to the Google Home.

      • Brett Wcislo
      • alan taylor

agreed, just because there are only 3 supported apps doesnt mean you should avoid it. Id get this over Echo if I hadnt bought it already

        • NexusMan

I heard about the rumors of Google Home so held out and just when I was ready to pull the plug on an Echo, Google officially announced it.

      • NexusMan

Exactly. As someone who never used an Echo, I think it would be more beneficial to hear how it stacks up against the Echo when it launched. Because 3rd party support will continue to come….not really concerned about that.

    • PerhapsNever

It really depends on your setup and what you want to use it for. If you don’t have any HA stuff, then a major portion of the device is going to be wasted. The voice commands (and Cast support) are just the tip of the iceberg.

Echo has had almost 2 years on the market and getting developers to support it. Given that Google products tend to get more developers, we may see a lot of things improve quicker than we did with Echo simply because Amazon isn’t exactly known for APIs (outside of their cloud platform).

I say this as a big Echo supporter (early adopter and I’ve had multiple Echos since launch day). With that said, I’m loving my Home. Took me all of 10 minutes to setup (including my HA stuff) and it’s now casting to multiple speakers in the house. 🙂

      • How are you casing to multiple speakers? Are they special speakers with casting built in or does each have a chromecast? Was curious how people might do this!

        • NexusMan

You have to have Chromecast Audio connected to the speakers.

        • PerhapsNever

I have a couple of Vizio Soundbars with Cast built in and also 2 CC Audios plugged into a soundbar in my office and a set of speakers in the guest bedroom.

    • NexusMan

Are ANY of these things we talk about a must buy?

  • Mac

Just saw these in best buy today. Had to pick up 4 so it worked out good.

    • Jessica Durden

That’s actually how many I need for my children!

    • NexusMan

      Wow. You’re going all in!

  • tu3218

So far, so good. But Google, why in the world can I not set reminders or add something to my calendar?? You have your own Calendar app yet it is not integrated into Google Home. Absolutely crazy.

    • glimmerman76

those features are coming… just not ready yet for some reason

      • tu3218

But who knows when. I continue to hear “features are coming” from so many companies and I don’t buy it. This is a joke for these features to not be included. Anything I can do with Google Now voice control, should 100% be applicable to Google Home. Very disappointed about it the more I think about it.

        • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Google Now and Google Assistant can’t do the exact same things right now. Home runs off of Assistant.

          • tu3218

Right but if I can tell Google home to add eggs to my shopping list, no reason I shouldn’t be able to to say remind me to call the bank tomorrow. Both which should go into Google keep. That’s what I am so confused about.

        • glimmerman76

its open to 3rd parties starting in december

    • alan taylor

did you give it permission in the setup?

      • tu3218

        Yep

    • NexusMan

Agreed. I’m a little shocked by that. I can’t even check what’s on m calendar tomorrow?

      • tu3218

I think you can check. Because there’s a certain voice command that gives you an audio dictation of your day. You just can’t add anything. I really wish I knew when this was coming.

Lack of adding reminders just absolutely confuses me. Such a simple thing that it fails to do.

        • NexusMan

I’ve been able to only have it list the current day. I can’t get it to tell me anything about “tomorrow.”

          • tu3218

Yeah same. Gahhh. Very frustrating. I get the whole third party thing but Google’s own apps and services not working!?!

          • NexusMan

Hopefully those things are updated fast. I played with it in the Google Store in NYC 2 weeks ago and the rep said they were continually issuing updates from then up to release and beyond. In one of the demos, the poor guy couldn’t get it to stop playing the news. It just kept going and going and wouldn’t end. The demo in another room was much better.

  • JRUIV

Got mine yesterday (preorder, I live in CA). Very responsive, rich sound, small and sleek. Looking forward to more apps being integrated (ie. Pocketcasts). Got home from running errands yesterday and told it to play music as soon as I walked in, felt very cool. Was sitting on my couch and told it to play the new Wonder Woman trailer on my living room Chromecast, worked great!

    • tu3218

Itd be nice to say turn my lights on, but my light switch is right at my front doors entrance. Flipping the switch is much easier.

      • NexusMan

You can say, “turn my lights on to 50%” 🙂

        • tu3218

I mean cool, but when I come in, I just need light. Doesn’t matter how bright. I’d do it but that light bulb that can do that is probably what, $40-$50. expensive lol

          • NexusMan

I hear you. lol. I’ve always been intrigued by the smart bulbs, and the Google Home is finally going to make me take the plunge. But I’m waiting for Black Friday to try to find a deal.

      • JRUIV

Useful if you have your hands full I guess

    • NexusMan

Does it play podcasts from Google Music, then? I use Pocketcasts, myself as my podcaster, but out of curiosity, if it does play podcasts from whatever source, what does it matter if Pocketcasts in particular is integrated, other than maybe picking up where you left off?

  • OligarchyAmbulance

My preorder doesn’t get here until tomorrow, but I could have walked into a store and bought one today. 🙁

    • jay

      Same problem

    • patt

      You will survive.

      • Brian Neumann

Yeah… I said the same thing to myself… but it’s still disappointing. So much for pre-ordering… I mean, throw the early adopters a bone and ship them a day or two earlier…

        • glimmerman76

i got mine with my pixel xl yesterday

        • Brian bi*ch alot

          Bi*ch bi*ch bich

Lol… I want my Google Home and I want it nooooowwwww!!!

      Welcome to store.google.com hahah

    • Brett Wcislo

That’s why I preordered mine from Best Buy, delivered at my door step release day.

    • Bradley Melnyk

I am in the same boat, order arrives monday, so I saw it was in stock at best buy, and I said to myself, “self, you probably are going to want 2 anyway, so go buy another” and I did, and I couldn’t be happier!!

      • DalvikDroid

Did the same thing and now I’m thinking about buying a third.. someone please stop me.

i still cant believe you cant send a text message thru it.

Multi account is really not that big of a deal yet. All my calendars go thru google.

    • tu3218

Yeah definitely disappointed about that. I like mine so far but that is bothersome.

  • ddevito

I’ll wait for multi-account capability, full Google account integration (tasks, calendar, etc) and an open API.

    • alan taylor

For the living room Home I skipped calendar and email sync. That way other family members can just add Play Music from there device and play music and not have to worry about any emails being read out when I tell my assistant good morning, lol
