Facebook announced a new app this week, breaking yet another piece of the main Facebook mobile experience off into its own tangent. This time, it’s for Events, providing a new area for users to find all of the latest happenings in their area.

With Events, you can easily find concerts, track events you are already planning to attend, and other nightlife action. To begin, you will see a calendar, complete with things you are already scheduled for. If you happen to be free one night, you can find a local event that might interest you.

For those who are RSVP’d to an event, you can also receive notifications when things are updated on their respective pages. For example, if the host puts out a call for someone to bring potato salad, you will be notified. As Facebook describes, “When you open Events, you can quickly catch up on new events your friends are interested in, recently-announced events by the Pages you like, and updates from events you’re already connected to.”

The overall idea for Events is solid, but as a user, it’s somewhat cumbersome to continually install standalone apps for the network’s many different services.

Naturally, Events is not yet available for Android users, even though that means there are hundreds of millions who are unable to access these features. According to Facebook, Events for Android is “coming soon.” If you own an iOS device, don’t worry, it’s available right now for you.
