Tip: If Your Galaxy S6 is Unresponsive or Frozen, Do This

Because you can’t pull the battery if something goes wrong with your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge and it freezes, you should probably know how to fix it. Well, you should at least know how to reboot it and unfreeze the little guy. Thankfully, Samsung is here to save the day with a helpful tip that won’t go away in your notification area until you view it.

That notification reads, “If your device is unresponsive, press and hold the Power key and the Volume down key simultaneously for more than 7 seconds to restart it.” Oh, they also have flagged this as a “Help Advice Tip.”

Got it? If your Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge is frozen or unresponsive, hold Power and Volume down for more than seven seconds and it should reboot. Boom.

  • Thanks – my phone just did this and your advice fixed it! 🙂

  • Leander Tomazeli

Thanks for the article! Apple really is trying hard to copy android in this phone.

  • rdrizzle

I bought this phone for my wife to upgrade her M8…..she hates me now I think. Glad this article was here to help fix it but damn this phone has so many problems!!

  • Kristy

    Thanks! Was so stuck!!

  • NotUnreasonable

I’m glad to have found this thread as mine was frozen when I picked it off the charging puck this morning. It had the green light on to indicate 100% charge but screen was blank and no buttons worked.

I’ve had an S2 and S4 before this and never had this happen, so let’s hope it’s not a regular issue with this phone.

  • what?

My question is who is left that makes a nice android phone that has a removable battery and a sd slot my s5 is about shot I need a new phone but don’t want some apple clone

    • CoreRooted

      LG G2/G3/[possible]G4, OPO, etc…

  • LionStone

Nice PSA for new Galaxy owners for when their new shiny device starts to jank up lol 🙂

  • TouchwizSucks

Never saw/heard a freeze on an Android phone, if something goes wrong it’ll do random reboots. May be this is a new Touchwiz feature exclusive to S6.

    • Dominick White

Older android use to do it a bit, o really haven’t seen it On newer version other than with people who root and put custom roms

      • Dave12308

No, allowing my device root permissions does NOT cause it to freeze. Learn WTF you are talking about before you open your mouth. And a custom ROM would be less apt to freeze because it would have less bloat, unless you are talking about Cyanogen crap.

        • Dominick White

I think you need to learn a bit of reading comprehension… When did I say given app root permission would cause it to freeze? The reason that putting a custom rom on your phone would cause some app to freeze ia before it wasn’t tailor made for that phone and some times the devs don’t have all the source code. so they have to find work around, which can cause issues. Man you need to learn how to have conversation with another person, I am really hoping that you don’t speak with other people like this in person.

  • yummy

I always hope to see more offs in the comments. Still more ons.

  • MacNificent

    Lmao

  • Dave

I wish there was a quick trick to fix the Camera app on the GS6 Edge. It worked great for two days. Then, all of the text, icons, and pictures started displaying upside down. A factory reset did not solve this for me. Oh, did I mention that Jank-Wiz (aka TouchWiz) keeps force-closing on me and displaying an error message? I love this phone but being an early adopter of this device has come with it’s fair share of headaches. 😐

    • Grayson

You’re holding it wrong. Just turn it upside down.

      • Dave

        Ha. Funny (not really)

  • MastermindDrew

More gifs. It hasn’t got old

  • Shashank Bhardwaj

Did you really just devote an article to restarting an Android phone?
    God.

  • rodney11ride

You have a S6 already unresponsive/frozen… But its the best phone out right now… ama rite?

    • Every phone freezes and becomes unresponsive

      • Big EZ

Yes they all do, well at least if all you use are Samsung phones. I haven’t had any freezing issues since my last Samsung phone. With Samsung I had to restart the phone every 2-3 days or it would start to lag bad, and freeze up shortly after that. I reboot my G3 every few weeks if I think about it, but I have gone well over a month without rebooting and no issues.

      • Me

        Well that’s just not true.

      • jimt

Haven’t had a problem freezing with my N6.

      • MacNificent

Haven’t had one problem with my m9. NOPE!

      • Scott

My Moto X 1st gen. still has not frozen ever. My S3 and Droid 2 both used to freeze and reboot themselves all the damn time.

      • Dave12308

The only time I reboot my Padfone X is when I want to reboot it. It has never frozen and become unresponsive on me.

  • SoothSayerCA

So bashing it on the edge of the desk wasn’t the correct answer?

    • alex drum

That’s the special bash feature of the S6 edge. It will reset if you bash it on the edge of things.

    • fartbubbler

      we call that “Percussive Maintenance”

  • CapnShiner

Is this Samsung specific or does this work on any Android device? Also, how did I not know this already? I can pull the battery on my GS3 but this method would be faster than taking off my Otterbox case.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

I think this is pretty common knowledge for us enthusiasts… But you know we don’t really make up most of the sales. So good for them to put it on screen for the average blokes.

    • hastagRight

unfortunately only enthusiasts read this site

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Well right. That’s why it’s good that Samsung has this “Helper” popup

    • Junk 6

What a sweet product from Sammy! LOL!!!

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Well this applies to any Android device without removeable battery. Which is most of the Major OEMs. Samsung, HTC, MOTO, I guess we can toss OnePlus in there too even though they aren’t “major”

        • Bobby Phoenix

Isn’t it different for Sammy? On my Moto I just hold the power button. No need for the volume key at all.

          • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Yea. But I was more referring to there generally being a way to kill the device without pulling the battery.

          • Boomdizzle

I’ve only had my m8 lock up a few times, but the power + down has worked on my m8, n7, galaxy tab, and even my wife’s Surface. Industry standard maybe? (well other than moto apparently. Lol)

  • toya

how about the lag and keyboard lags? It’s pretty annoying.

    • Joey Sandoval

Nexus 6 has the worst keyboard lag, can get stuck for minutes

      • skittlez

never had that happen. you on 5.1?

        • also never experienced this on either 5 or 5.1.

        • Joey Sandoval

Yup. May have to get a warranty replacement

          • Skittlez

try a factory reset. sounds software related

      • Adrynalyne

Thats called a frozen phone, not keyboard lag…

        • Joey Sandoval

Don’t get snappy, isn’t it odd that it only occurs when I’m using the keyboard

          • Adrynalyne

Don’t get snappy, LOL. I wasn’t snappy. Something freezing up for minutes is not due to the keyboard and that is a fact.

          • Joey Sandoval

The only time the phone freezes for me is when the keyboard is on. Before this issue every time I would print it would freeze the phone. So I did a factory reset. Now the printing issue is resolved but now I have the keyboard freeze

          • Adrynalyne

Try it with a factory reset and no apps installed. Don’t even add your google accounts.

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

OEM Keyboards are always terrible….. or so I find. Step 1 for me is always swift key… Or the Google Keyboard very far in second place

      • toya

I guess I was expecting too much from this New Phone 🙁 and it’s kinda expensive.

        • jnt

I installed the Google Keyboard and it’s been perfect. I don’t experience any lag in the rest of the phone. The OEM keyboard definitely feels a bit slow. Oh I’m on the regular S6, too, not the Edge… FWIW.

      • MacNificent

I just switched from google keyboard (in which I have been a fan of for years and I recommend or make all my friends switch to it) for the sense 7 keyboard.and something about it just works better.

    • shooter50

how about do you actually own one or are you regurgitating someone else’s comment?

      • toya

I owned a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge that’s why I went to the comment section to be heard. Unlike other’s who’s pretending to own…one and waste their time annoying some1 else.

  • jimt

Just like the Gnex. Only this one has a physical home button.

  • Joey Sandoval

So that’s the bottom part of the long button, while pressing the small button? Jeez its like rubbing my stomach and patting my head

  • jimt

Yes just pretend it is an android phone.

    • Joey Sandoval

Apple really is trying hard to copy android in this phone…

  • OneForTheGoodDays

Again the crotchety old man in me wants to believe that these articles are just a reason for DL to keep up it’s obligation (under who knows the terms) to keep the S6 in as many posts a day as possible. Would love to see this much coverage for the G4 when it’s released. 😛

    • mcdonsco

They are posting a lot on it because it is the first truly kick ass phone from Samsung; ever. Its also not just kick ass for them, it smokes everything else out there.

It deserves the coverage; I have no doubt they are not getting a penny from Samsung for these articles.

      • alex drum

If you could please explain how it smokes everything melse that would be awesome. Thanks.

        • mcdonsco

Its as close to the perfect phone as someone has gotten thus far. In the world of tech that’s about a 6-18 month (max) crown.

BTW please do not interpret that as calling it perfect, its far from it; its just closer than any other consumer grade phone, currently.

          • alex drum

I know its definitely not perfect. its just marketed well and full of eye catching gimmicks, same as the rest of their products, including their curved TV’s that can’t pass a simple color blind test and distort every image on the screen (notably straight lines). But again if you could give some reasons for your wild claim that’s all I’m asking for.

    • flosserelli

So rather than scrolling past an article that you (supposedly) have no interest in, you take time to post a useless comment that adds nothing to the discussion. Thanks, everyone is better off now. /s

      • OneForTheGoodDays

It’s not worth a whole article…. this is barely twitter entry worthy.

        • flosserelli

You can decide what deserves “a whole article” when you start your own blog.

    • MacNificent

And the m9 (when….I mean because it already came out)

  • billiebob808

What to do if your Galaxy S6 is unresponsive or frozen:

    (obligatory /s)

    • jimt

This is also a check on the glass front and back.

    • michael arazan

Obligatory TouchWiz sucks, still sucks comment

  • OneForTheGoodDays

As a G2 Crack Flasher I have been aware of this for QUITE some time.

  • Jared Denman

Just like every android device. Shocker

  • alex drum

Or just pull the battery out. Ether one will definitely turn the device off.

    • Nathan Borup

Good luck pulling the battery out…

      • alex drum

All you would need is a hammer and screwdriver. It’s amazing what jobs old world tools can still accomplish

        • Nathan Borup

          …without demolishing the phone

          • alex drum

they invented glue for a reason.

          • KB Smoka

            and stupidity for another.

          • Joey Sandoval

I prefer duct tape, duct tape fixes everything

    • KB Smoka

Did you read the first sentence?
