It’s been more than two years since we last wrote about Handcent SMS, the venerable third-party text messaging app, but that doesn’t mean the folks behind the 10 million downloads strong service have been resting on their laurels. A major update, version 6.0, brings a redesigned UI, computer and tablet SMS capabilities, and support for all versions of Android.

The aforementioned visual overhaul is a welcome improvement over the old default, which was getting a bit long in the tooth. A majority of UI elements have been “flattened” (think Material Design) and colored contact photos are brought to the forefront. A new sliding navigation drawer has been added, with expedited access to settings and recent messages.

Handcent Anywhere makes its official debut in Handcent 6.0. In incubation for the better part of this year, the service lets you forward and reply to SMS messages on your computer or tablet, much like MightyText. Messages are synced across devices, in addition.

Finally, the new version of Handcent introduces Notification Center, a feed dedicated to Handcent-related news items like features, bug fixes, and discounts.

Handcent, now compatible with all versions of Android (even L), is available for download through Google Play.
