The Droid Life Show Episode 64 is Leaving South Beach, Headed Back to Cleveland

We gathered this past Wednesday night for Episode 64 of The Droid Life Show, discussing topics which included the LG G3, our Android Wear device reviews, and broke LG’s announcement of the G3 Beat live on air. LG has a tendency to announce products while we are doing our shows, so that helps to spice up the action a little bit.

In addition, we talked about the upcoming Xperia Z3 headed through the FCC, Google+ allowing you to use whatever name you would like, and had leftover time for a full Q&A. As the cherry on top, we discussed the week’s top apps and games for anyone who relies on us to always inform them of the best titles for their devices.

If you miss our live shows, be sure to subscribe to us through various ways by following the links below.

Our normal show night is Wednesday at 6PM Pacific (9PM Eastern).

Hasn’t recent studies shown that the play store revenue has been growing very quickly and is growing at a faster rate than the app store. So this idea that people don’t spend much on Android is false. Sure right now app store is making more money but that doesn’t mean that play store isn’t making good amount of money too. Studies if correct show that at the rate the play store revenue is going, in a few years time it will overtake the app store if the growth is sustained. Also those devs who complain about sales not being great on the only store, I bet they are the same people who literally just port the ios version without even bothering it to update it with the Android ui guideline. If you look at the popular Android paid apps, they use Android ui guide line etc. When you see a crappy port why would you buy something. If something looks nice people are willing to buy.

Compared to the numbers from that BI article, which are based on one research firm’s numbers, Google now has 38% of the market share of app sales compared to Apple’s 62%. It’s totally possible that the Play Store will be able to make more money than the App Store, but that would mean taking a huge chunk of the share from Apple. As Android continues to expand in China without the Play Store while Apple expands in China with its App Store, I wouldn’t be surprised if those numbers stay similar. We’ll see what happens, but the Play Store still has a ways to go before it’s truly comparable with the App Store. There are still app categories that are very popular on iOS that Android developers have not addressed.

Agree they are still behind without a doubt but I just don’t think the way some people portray the play store as a terrible place to make money. That was my point really not that the play store makes the same as Apple only that the growth of revenue in the plays store seems to be growing at a rapid pace. As for lacking apps I think the main area it’s lagging behind apple is productivity apps like video editors and music maker apps but I think in other areas it’s there and it seems like most devs are working on ios and Android and some research has shown that some delays in the Android release of a game for example has been because apple got exclusivity rather than the Dev didn’t want to release on Android at the same time. I think the main takeaway is even though play store is still behind the app store in terms of revenue and certain apps the play store is in no way a distance 2nd to app store imo and whether users prefer to pay via iap or a upfront fee Android users do spend even if it’s not the same as ios but it is still spending.I think this mentality that most Android users don’t spend needs to be killed ASAP.. U personally know many ios users and the only thing they have brought is the yearly subscription of WhatsApp. Also Androids in the emerging market and if someone’s buying a £50 phone the chance of spending on apps is unlikely but if your a top end Android buyer like s5,m8 nexus 5 etc you probably spend just as much as a ios user or maybe not who knows really. Most these studies you have to take it with a grain of salt as am sure it varies by country to country.

        • http://ronoffringa.me/ Ron Offringa

Categories that are big on iOS and missing or tiny on Android:
          Writing
          Calendar
          Email
          Photo Backup
          Podcasts
          Music Creation
          Video Creation and Editing
          Photgraph Creation and Editing
          Games

The is definitely a big discrepancy there. Most major apps that people really want are on both platforms, but there are whole categories that are seemingly ignored. That’s on top of most of Android’s growth being in the low end, which means less spending. I think that’s why Android is growing faster, but only at a percentage point a year. That’s faster than iOS, but not significant yet. That doesn’t mean Android is bad or that all Android users are cheap, but it does mean that *most* Android users don’t spend money like *most* iOS users.

          • taz89

I would personally agree with only a few of them, I don’t think games should be there as a category that is lacking, even though ios has more games, Android still has a lot. I have a ipad too so pretty much all the games I play are on both stores but I’ll agree because it’s a fact lol that ios does have more games but I think it’s unfair to say that they play store is lacking there. Not sure what the game ratio is from Android to ios but am pretty sure that Android has a couple 100 thousand games and I even if ios has double I wouldn’t call couple 100 thousand lacking for a category. The only categories I can’t completely agree on is music creation, Video creation and photo creation but I do think these categories are really niche and targeting a demographic that isn’t the majority. The other categories I’ve just done a side by side comparison between my nexus 7 and ipad 4 and it’s true it looks like in those categories ios does offer more and more quality but as yo8 kind of said that in Androids defence it has got most of the big ones and I do wonder in Android itself how important those categories are, I feel most are happy with using the default built in calender or google docs etc. I’ve got no evidence to support this but I feel most Android users eventually or do use the built in google apps like calender, docs, drive etc. As for the photo backup category do you mean box, Dropbox etc play store does have all the major apps there. On the whole I agree with your comment in a way, would it be nice if all categories were equal, of course but I just wonder if most of those categories even matter to the mass consumers, I think most people’s use of tablet is gaming, Video entertainment and Web browsing and of course social apps and shopping and in terms of those aspects Android has it covers. Also as am sure many of the android users are buying budget devices it makes sense that percentage wise Android users spend less if at all any because it includes emerging markets people who are less likely to spend where as all iPhone users are mid to top end buyers. I wonder if the ratio would be equal if we were just comparing top end Android users vs ios users.
