Droid Life Q&A Sessions: Volume 21

We are back with another DL Q&A Session, this time as Volume 21. Coming fresh off of Google I/O, we know many of you may have questions about what to expect from Android L or even Android Wear, so right now is the perfect time to ask us anything you would like to know with regard to those topics.

Besides the same ol’ Android talk, it is also a good time to inquire about anything else you are curious about. Who do we have in the Finals for the World Cup, where is LeBron gonna go, why do I have a “creepy” hand tattoo on my arm? You can ask us just about anything you would like.

On Friday, the team will assemble to answer a handful of our favorite questions. Until then, shoot your questions below in the comments section.

To see all of our previous Q&A’s, check them out here.

What phone / OEM do you feel will be / have the most talked about phone at the end of 2014 ? Which phone already out or coming out has you most intrigued and interested in purchasing as a daily driver?

  • droidrazredge

Since you guys at Droid-Life have been using Android L Preview for a few weeks since Google I/O ended what are your initial thoughts, concerns, feedback, and overall opinions on Android L in general ? and where you see Google taking the Android OS going forward with Android L and future iterations of Android ? How do you see that being implemented with AndroidAuto, AndroidWear, and Google Fit ?

  • Steveo

What ever happened to your Sony Xperia Z2 review, that you wrote on a couple of articles was coming soon?

  • DRAF_Werd

There seems to be a lot of hype around the Moto 360 as an Android Wear device. With Droid Life recently reviewing the LG G Watch and coming away with the experience feeling “beta-like” and ultimately being able to do without it – from your perspective, how do you expect the Moto 360 to differentiate itself from that experience?

I understand the build quality is improved in almost every aspect when compared to these devices, but since it should be running basically the same Android Wear software it seems to me the overall experience shouldn’t be that dissimilar.

Would love to hear your comments.

  • Higher_Ground

Since google glass seems to have stalled a bit in terms of excitiment and more people seem to turn against it due to privacy concerns, do you see Google just moving on to something else? Are they just giving people time to get used to it? Waiting for a competitor?
Likewise, what do you guys see as the next item to take advantage of android? Another wearable? LG refrigerators with android interface?

  • Higher_Ground

will there eventually be a tattoo of a hand on the tattoo itself?

  • John Kitchen

I’m sure my android question will be answered. I just want to know what type of shoes do you guys wear?

  • JoeTi

Kellen – will you take this out for a 3-5 mile run and report back on the fit aspects of the new ui and supporting software?

  • TimXer

Is HTC making the next NEXUS?

  • Aaron

If any of the DL crew have taken international trips, how did you keep from selling first born on roaming charges for abroad calling? (Emphasis on a Verizon phone plan)

do you think the reported specs on the note 4 are legit as yet? i’d really like to see a bump to 6″

  • Chris Doerman

Are any of you guys running Preview L as a daily driver or do you just run in on a secondary device out of “professional curiosity”?

  • EdubE24

With the rumored iPhone 6 coming in larger sizes and the upgrades to IOS will you be tempted to try out the new phones? I know android pays the bills, but can we expect a review?

  • Ryan N

Which of the android wear devices support vibration? I know wear has support for vibration, but no sound right? Just saying, having your watch in line of sight to catch the 5 second notification is less convenient than a vibrating alert.

  • Brian Diaz

How do you see the android community in mexico and Latin American?

  • Shane Redman

Has your Samsung Gear Live charging piece snapped and broken off yet? If not, how easily does it feel like that could happen since I’m seeing a lot of ppl opting for the cheaper of the 2 available right now?

  • Alex Boro

LG G Watch or Samsung Gear Live?

  • MichaelFranz

Ok Google hotword detection on a system wide scale seems to be one of my newer favorite features. Is it safer to assume the current gen flagships wont have as much battery impact with this as others since most of the newer chipsets have the ability to handle it?

Second – I am seeing more and more now that features that used to be specific to custom Roms only are slowly making their way in a form into Android. Do you ever think we will get a version of Android where we will have more control over the actual UI out of the box?

    • Higher_Ground

Having run a custom rom for the past 2 years, I’m not sure how I’ll feel about losing the ability to customize my phone. I mainly just want to customize the toggles and a few things on the status bar – things like swiping between the notification shade/toggles and a circle battery with #’s that should be fairly easy to include as an option.

  • Shagnscooby

Do you think Android L preview updates(if any) will get pushed for those that have it installed or do you think every update will have to be manually flashed?

  • teevirus

Does the optical heart rate monitor on the Samsung Geer work with dark skin?

  • Kahsay Cooley

Where do you see the android/chrome/Wear or Google Ecosystem in general gonna be in 5 years?

  • DanSan

Kellen, I believe you have your Nexus 5 running on AT&T. whats your solution for cell phone insurance since AT&T doesnt let you insure a phone they didnt sell you (if im right?)

    • Sir Edward Coke

I really life this one, my nexus 5 is on straight talk (atnt) and if i botch my phone im pretty much Effed

      • Pedro

Buy the next Nexus. Keep the 5 around as insurance. I’m looking at my N4 right now, which is my security blanket.

    • epps720

My guess is that Kellen doesn’t worry about insurance. He receives every flagship phone, so if one happens to break he already has another in his back pocket.

  • marc

should the release of a developer edition of android L lead to faster updates to phones once the finished version is ready?

I thought the mirroring app was released to the play store, but I don’t see it.

Android Wear is still early, would you advise consumers to wait until next year to purchase Android Wear smartwatches?

    • JB

      still young*

    • James

Similarly, is Android Wear “enough” in its current iteration? If not, what do you think will be needed to get there (more sensors, better battery life, more fashionable, less reliance on a phone, etc.)?

Which is why a lot of readers continue to follow DL, I imagine. There’s only a small handful of Android news sites that are continuously active with their community.

Do you think Lebron is really considering going back to Cleveland or is it a clever ruse to get Carmelo to Miami or could you see him in a Trailblazers jersey?

    • col3rsc

      Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his “decision” unlike anything ever “witnessed” in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don’t deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our “motivation” to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that’s simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown “chosen one” sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And “who” we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called “curse” on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former “King” will be taking the “curse” with him down south. And until he does “right” by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

      Just watch.

      Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day….

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue….

      Dan Gilbert
      Majority Owner
      Cleveland Cavaliers

      • BillySuede

he may go back. his wife wants to go back. his management team is still based in ohio and the cavs have youth and three picks in the first round next year. the heat have to do some major re-arrangement of the deck chairs to even be considered to be a top seed in the east next year.

as long as dan gilbert stfu, it’s not out of the realm of reason for lebron to go back.

        • col3rsc

I think he goes back eventually but not now. That letter has been on the Cavs website for the last 4 years up until this morning. Gilbert is an idiot.

          • BillySuede

you could very well be right. he needs to make up his damn mind. i’m just waiting for ‘melo to resign already… #knicks

  • dannyWHITE

Up to how much are you willing to pay for a Moto 360 given what we know about it now?

    • Alec

They will pay anything because they are tech bloggers 😛 At least Kellen and Tim will

  • Eric

Why do u guys think Google held off on Hangouts/Voice and when do u think it will happen?

    • James

And why the hell hasn’t it happened already?

  • T4rd

What are your favorite phone accessories? Juice packs, head phones, cases, BT speakers, etc.

  • Droid Ronin

We’ve always been a fan of minimal, flat Holo design. How do you feel about Google taking a step back from it with the Material Design of Android L?

    • stang68

It’s still minimal and flat. Just no more holo.

  • Droid Ronin

Do you see the Android Silver line taking off or do you still swear by the Nexus program?

    • Bryan Mills

I’d pay more for premium nexus devices.

  • moelsen8

you ever try to pull off the stranger with that creepy hand tattoo on your arm?

  • Tony Spencer

Do you think watch companies like Seiko, Casio and others will implement Android Wear?

  • epps720

ha ha… Why do you have that creepy baby hand tattoo?! And is it torture having so many people comment on it?

  • Maxim∑

Whats your daily drivers for 2014?

    • This post might help! We update whenever we change 🙂

      • epps720

Nice, had no idea you guys did this but where’s Ron on here? I think you should keep this column pinned on the right hand column of the main page since you update it so often.

        • Check the homepage, that’s where you’ll see it 🙂

      • Maxim∑

Wow I comoletely missed that, thanks Tim!

  • Shawn Spring

Will the G3 and new Samsung “Prime” device launch a wave of 2k rez screen smartphones, or are the benefits of a device with a 2k screen mostly gimmecky at this point, and not worth the power consumption concerns?

    • The Narrator

MotoXers liked to say 1080p was gimmicky and not worth the power consumption concerns. Now that the HypeX+1 is 1080p you guys try to talk down bigger screens, again.

      Dat low-end spec phone love.

      • Shawn Spring

By that, I only meant (as with 4k televisions) there isn’t a lot of content that’s available at that rez (yet) – I’ve seen a few reviews on MeTube that seem to think that the G3 in particular might suffer battery issues because of it (no mind you these are demo units from Europa running here in the US so I’m not sure what impact that might have as well) – but as a G2 owner, the screen is already amazing – I’m not sure I’d want to step up to 2k if there isn’t a whole lot for me to do with it. I hold no Motox bias of any kind (at this point) 🙂

  • Fitzgerald King Xuffi

Do you think Android L will receive updates through the final release? or future developers images? or just an update in Novembre to L definitive version?

  • WAldenIV

Do you think Google should implement Moto X features in Android L (active display, Moto Assist features, improved always listening capabilities)?

  • Brian Wolfman

Why were you wearing the Germany kit and why are you a German fan? Why not support the united states?! I’ll accept a 50% support if you were born in Germany and lived over there for a while, otherwise, be proud to be American!

2000-2008 soured my views of America.

Yeah it’s amazing how many people don’t want Equal Rights and how many bigot racists there are. It’s sad.

          • ButThatsJustEveryone

Yep, it totally isn’t years of failed policies. You deflect better than Tim Howard.

        • Brian Wolfman

2009 confederations cup? Beat Spain, almost beat Brazil? Got out of group stage 2 cups in a row. Got out of group of death this year when Spain, Portugal, england and Italy all go home! One of 16 teams left in the world. Why do they get a pass and we get scrutinized?

        • Bryan Mills

Lol yeah that 280+ Executive Orders from Bush compared to the 180 from Obama. Make’s sense.
Oh and the 6+ Benghazi incidents.

    • I have immediate family that lives in Germany, and was gifted the jersey. Plus, it looks damn good on me lol

      • Brian Wolfman

I’ll accept that as a partial reason…as long as you rock a usa kit when we play!

        • I was there watching that game with him and he was wearing Germany the whole time.

          • Brian Wolfman

Oh come on…smh…be proud Tim! BE PROUD MY BROTHER! We will go further one day…and I expect to see you in your red white and blue!

  • Why *do* you have a creepy hand tattoo on your arm?

    • Eric R.

Why do you have to say things like this? To get upvotes, well guess what its extremely rude. Does it really bother you? I mean, its not your body, let him do what he wants with it.

    • Rodeojones000

Correction – the question should be worded:

Why do you have a terribly designed, awful-looking, creepy hand tattoo on your arm? Did you lose a bet? Or are you looking for something you’ll regret when you’re older?
