Monday Poll: Do You Use the Amazon Appstore?

amazon appstore

Amazon announced today that its selection of apps in the Appstore has tripled in the past year and that “developers continue to report strong monetization” thanks to the apps they sell there. Rather than simply pass along that news, we thought we would instead see if any of you care.

Because well, Amazon used to grab our attention with free apps of the day, but even that train seems to have run out of steam over the last couple of years. In other words, we rarely talk about the Amazon Appstore unless they are bundling a whole bunch of apps together for free for a special occasion. In fact, I had to install the store this morning in order to take the picture at the top of this post.

So I’m curious – do you use the Amazon Appstore to download apps?

Amazon app store: Where free isn’t even worth it.

  • cwgriswold

I did until I realized that you needed to be connected in order to use their apps. At which point I realized that Amazon was basically using it to track everywhere I went (and in the process eating my battery).

  • thajack

I used it for a while, but gave up after a recent trip where none of the Apps that I got from the Amazon App Store would work when I didn’t have a data connection.

  • Brandon

I used to use it for the free apps but I haven’t touched it in about a year or two.

  • ih8legal

Yes for their coins an free apps of the day.

  • Kevin Vesga

I used to have the Amazon Appstore for SwiftKey but now that it has gone free I can just grab the version from the Google Play Store. Furthermore the FAOTD can be grabbed using the website so I think I might just uninstall the Amazon Appstore now.

  • TechWings

Free Apps! Some of them I actually still download and use, i.e., Shazam Encore and TuneIn Radio Pro.

  • needa

i have never installed it and doubt i ever will. one thing i hate is having notifications in the notif bar. last i heard, amazon wants you to update apps to their update, and once you do the play store wants you to update it to theirs. seems like a huge pain in the ass to me.

  • Eric Soriano

I look at the free app everyday and add to my collection if it’s something I want. Most of the games I install on my kid’s tablet but not on my devices.

  • Chris

I have apps that are paid from the FAOTD which are still useful. Also, the coin promotions have allowed me to get additional other paid apps for “free”. The FAOTD selection has reduced in quality, almost in proportion to the increase in quality of the Amazon App Store apk oddly enough. With having a $30 balance for paid apps, I am more likely to dip into Amazon’s App Store for a paid app instead of Google at the current financial status of my life.

  • Joey Wollenburg

I check daily for the free app. I download it even if I don’t think I need it now. Who knows, maybe someday I may need it. I have something like 4K coins saved up as well.

  • Hunter

Yep, mostly thanks to Android police who keep telling me when Amazon is giving away free apps, and free amazon coins to get more apps. I currently have $20 worth of coins to use on apps. I bought Minecraft and other games from there, with the over $30 in free money Amazon gave away last month.

  • Matthew Mascarenas

only when i find a way to earn the free coins

  • subiedude85

I still have it installed, check the faotd every morning, and am let down every morning.

  • Wayne Broyles-Reiner

I rarely use it for anything other than the free coin promotion and to keep my copy of SwiftKey that was free a couple of years ago. Now that it is a free app anyway, I may not reinstall the store when I upgrade this summer.

  • Suman Gandham

I have a general dislike of Amazon and try to avoid using them wherever possible… I think this spawns from my resentment at their forking of Android :p

  • br_hermon

Consumers need to help themselves and developers by not taking part in this store or any other forked Android store. Doing so sends a clear message. “Hey Devs, don’t waste your time or resources maintaining separate versions, ports or stores. Doing so will save you time and money, saving us money and will allow for a better quality, more refined app in Google Play.”

  • Josh P.

only when there are free things like the coin give aways. Most of the daily apps have dropped in quality.

  • AeySimp

the apps on the amazon appstore are junk… better off just going to the absolute latest versions via play store

  • belsonc

No – I have a hard time using a 3rd party app store that requires their app to be installed. Something just doesn’t sit right with me about that.

  • jamaall

Whats the point of it when the Play Store is already on your phone and so much better?

  • BoFiS

more like HELLZ NO, I have no desire to have it suck up my battery and be absolutely awful about updating apps. Play Store or bust!

  • DisQussIt

I use to need a connected phone to get Amazon Apps to work. Maybe that has changed but since I’ve never downloaded any amazon apps since I don’t know, but it was a deal breaker for sure.

  • Ginjurr

    I didn’t even know they had one…

  • Dark_Laser

Where is the “only for the free app of the day” option?

  • GJV

I dont buy apps there, but I check the free app daily. Usually crap, but every so often it’s a game that’s worthwhile or something else I enjoy. The Appstore app itself has improved tremendously from when it first came out. It can finally do updates and installs in the background without user interaction needed, and I have not noticed any bad effects on my battery life or performance.

  • http://blog.jestermx6.com/ George Fayad

I “use it” in so much as i go onto amazon’s website every day and purchase the free app.

  • titry

There have been a couple of free apps on there that I use on a daily basis. Do I want to use it, definitely not, but I have to be signed in to use those apps now. I’ll probably just go ahead and purchase what I need from the play store, it’s worth the 20 bucks to get the thing off my phone.

  • Ryan N

Google opinions killed the amazon store for me.

The only advantage was the free app of the day… But anything I need for apps nowadays is free or I’ll just buy it with credit from surveys.

    • etchings13

I downloaded Google opinions but haven’t received a paid survey since that first day. What’s your Secret?

  • rfranken

no one thought less of it than me back in the day. but it is fine now. only use it for the faotd of course. and occasionally buy some games for my children with the free coins i get.

back in the long long ago it would kill phones. my droid X could not handle that app. it affected everything i tried to do on it. removing it made that phone 3 times faster. since then the app has improved and phones can handle about anything you throw at them now.

I hoarded the free apps daily for the first year or so but the list got so big and unmanageable. It was mostly feature apps that Google has implemented in Android since. I check every so often for some cool free apps, but other than that, I just use it to update those apps. I’ve tried converting my apps back to Google Play for one experience.

  • hyperbeatser

used to for the free daily app then stopped

  • Bootleg Zani

Only for Fire TV and Kindle Fire tablet.

  • NGagen

I use it for my daughter’s tablet because I have gotten a lot of free apps and coins. I only use Google Play on my devices.

  • blix247

Even free app of the day couldn’t keep me interested. Bottom line is that it play second fiddle to Play Store. If they do a really good job on the phone I will probably pick it up though.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Nahhh…. There is no upside. I stopped using it because for whatever reason it takes forever for apps from the Amazon Appstore to be updated, when the same apps on Google Play are updated sometimes weeks in advance… that’s just damn annoying.

    • https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=iWizard Bikram Agarwal

Previously – Amazon used to take 3-4 weeks to vet the app update submitted via developer console. So, I guess developers just stopped pushing every update to Amazon. Only major updates were pushed. But the last time I uploaded updated version of 3 of my apps, they were approved within a week. So, I guess Amazon is slowly improving. Still a long way to go.

  • Jeff Miller

not everyone has access to the play store. my kids and my mother both have off brand tablets they do not have Play store acess

    • HarvesterX

Too bad you can’t install the Play Store off the Play Store

  • akellar

Nope. Horribly slow app updates compared to Play Store and way too much background action going on (check a logcat, constant pinging going on from the app).

  • ki11ak3nn

Yeah I don’t use it that often. Barely ever. Just when I can get a good app for free.

  • flosserelli

I grab the daily free app but I rarely use anything that I download from there. I just like to collect freebies :)

I used it for a month. I ended up buying the FAotD apps I liked on the Play Store, uninstalled the Amazon App store, and have never looked back nor been jealous about the FAotD promotions.

  • MJZ

Who knows.. we might all be using the Amazon appstore a lot more after Wednesday! lol

  • Chahk Noir

I got quite a few great apps from their FAotD promotion throughout the years. And then when Amazon was giving away a truckload of their appstore-only coins, it was a shame not to participate. Got GTA and Monument Valley for free during that whole craze.

  • jb

I voted yes but I want to clarify – ONLY for the free app of the day.

    • midget

you don’t even need the app, you can get the free so thru the website.

  • JSo

The article says it all. I used to when they were giving away good apps for free every day. But it has gotten dull over the past year or two. I don’t use it anymore.

  • http://andymerskin.com/ Andy Merskin

Only when there’s a free app of the day worth downloading. :)

  • morgan boyle

i went in to check and see if there was an update for SwiftKey since i got it free via the appstore way back when (it had decent free apps). now its just annoying because it cant auto update

    • Gr8Ray

I stopped using the Amazon Appstore because it caused so much confusion for the Google Play store when updates would come out. For whatever reason, Google Play couldn’t tell the difference between the apps I had bought from them and the ones I had gotten from Amazon, and would constantly try to apply updates which would fail until Amazon finally got around to pushing the same update. It was annoying as f#%k.

      • sdcoiner76

That is strange. I have never had a problem with Google Play store and Amazon apps. I also have tons of apps I have gotten off the Humble Bundle and never have a problem with them either.

        • Gr8Ray

They probably fixed it. I’m talking about when it first came out, back in the Froyo/Gingerbread Android 2.x era. Haven’t touched it since then.

          • morgan boyle

i have only had the problem with Amazon thinking my google play app was theirs.

      • michael arazan

I had the same problems with amazon apps and google play apps as well with updates. Even costing me double to update my apps in the play store because google play would not update my apps that were premiums paid for through amazon

  • Kyle

It’s been a while since anything good showed up for the free app of the day, but I keep Amazon Appstore for this reason and check it daily. Back in the day I got Swiftkey and other pricey apps for free.

  • http://www.naskaras.com/ Thanassi Karageorgiou

Just once. but I was during my “experimental” phase in college.

    • bill c.

      I didn’t inhale

      • Miguel

I gave up on them when they decided not to honor the apps in the play store.

  • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

    No.
