Samsung Galaxy W Announced, a True “Phablet” Device

Galaxy W

Samsung announced a new smartphone over the weekend, the Galaxy W. The “W” should stand for “WTF,” as the Galaxy W comes packed with a display size of 7″ at a resolution of 1280 x 720. Imagine holding that device up to your head for placing calls. It would seem rather silly to anyone witnessing such a sight.

Beyond its massive display size, the device comes with a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 8MP rear-facing camera, 2MP front-facing camera, 3,200mAh battery, comes in Black, Red, and White color options, and runs Android 4.3 “Jelly Bean.”

Worried about seeing someone attempt to pull this out of their pockets? Don’t. The device is set for Korea-only launch, with chances of it ever hitting our shores being extremely slim.

This is getting really out of hand, I used to love Samsung. Had the S3 and the Note 2, but Im just not impressed with the s5 at all, I hate the design and im soo tired of touchwiz. Im thinking about the LG G3 but idk n e more. Ive been having some serious blasphemous thoughts of going iphone :/ n e one have n e recommendations ?

    • AngryBadger

Have you looked at the Nexus 5? What types of features are you looking for? Nothing wrong with going iPhone, whatever suits your needs and keeps you happy. Each phone type has it’s place. :)

      • Damon

I did, i thought it was really nice ! unfortunately Verizon doesnt support it .

There’s no such thing as a true “phablet” device since it’s just a stupid term invented by some tech blogger who thought he was being clever.

As for this giant phone, in general people are using their phone function less and less, if you mostly use your phone as a tablet and only use them as phones very occasionally I can see the point to this. Of course it doesn’t interest me because I don’t mind carrying multiple devices but not everybody thinks that way.

  • SewWhat

Ehh.. I have mixed feelings about this. This trend to larger and larger devices IMO has it’s merits for some folks. What’s the real advantage of have a separate smartphone and tablet of the same platform that are connected to the same data network via individual service plans. Other than the current paradigm of “gouge’m for every cent”.? Having a large device like this for some could be an option.. I myself am all for minimization not necessarily of size but of complication and redundancy. Though to be practical on any level as a voice communication device this thing needs a Bluetooth accessory dial out handset. Something akin to this, see attached pic, would be ideal for my needs.

  • Ramel

No one, I repeat no one would buy this!

  • JD

too many dang devices, I wish samsung would leave android already, hopefully consumers will start to see sammy for what they really are crap.

  • Jonathan

I’d rather have a windows phone than this…

  • SG

why are the biggest phones coming out from an area where most of the population has tiny hands ??

  • Maxim∑

On one end- Apple introduces Swift,Metal,Yosemite,iOS8,4,000 new API’s etc…
Google release 4.4.3 with nice improvements and prepares for I.O

    then we have Samsung…

  • XvierX

It’s easy to dismiss this device but gigantic devices like the galaxt note we’re once seen as impractical as well. When I saw this I actually thought to myself, if an earpiece was included this might actually work. I imagined an earpiece like the one Joaquin Phoenix uses in the movie “Her”. if I could carry my Nexus 7 around and leave my droid Maxx at home without losing the ability to receive calls and text messages I would. I’m not a fan of the mid-sized hand sets available. Either give me a 7-inch tablet I can carry like a book or a 4.7 inch phone I can forget about in my pocket. I can think of circumstances where each would be very convenient.

  • djdsf

    Shame it’s not 1440 x 2560 like the G3 otherwise I would buy one.

    • SG

even then.. way too big to be a phone

      • djdsf

Well for me, I actually need it because I need to cut down on the stuff I have to carry around with me. I fly and I need my maps and manuals and other things with me, so I find myself carrying a Nexus 7 for that stuff and my Note 3 as a backup. If the Nexus 7 made calls, I could just get rid of my Note 3 and live with that. Even if it were making calls and answering only through BT. As odd as it sounds, there are some people out there in odd circumstances (like mine as an example) where some of these make sense, and while not everyone might need one or find the point to it, there are some of us who would be more than happy to support it.

        • SG

yea but wouldn’t you feel odd having a nexus 7 slapped to your face for making a phone call while out in public?

  • Brady

even MKBHD may struggle with one-handed use.

    • SG

a yeti may have trouble using it with one hand

  • Marikel

The thing about “phones” this size is that they are very common in Asia. Go to Japan and you’ll see people walking in the streets using Galaxy Tabs as phones.

  • http://petervideos.com/ Peter Mansour

Samsung just makes these products so fools who actual buy them can test them.

  • Jesse Torres

    Holy faq!!

  • Elmer Fudd

I guess I’ll need to drop another $300.00 on a smartwatch so I can use the phone.

  • calculatorwatch

If you look at the picture pretending it’s a Galaxy S5, and that the Koreans are just that tiny, it becomes even more enjoyable.

  • j

ROFL i can see you fan boys in STarbucks with this over your face!!! hhahahahaha losers!!!!

  • CaptainHowdy13

I’d much rather hold a Nexus 7 to my head

  • Bryan Moross

Their attempt to invent “June” fools day…

  • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

    Wow, such horrible specs.

  • vwbeetlvr

It’s not the same resolution nor screen shape of the nexus 7 2012. The nexus 7 2012 was 1280×800 because of the on screen buttons. So that had a 16×10 aspect ratio vs 16×9 aspect ratio of the galaxy w.

    • Brady

it just looks like holding a nexus 7 to your face

    • vwbeetlvr

Thank you for updating the article based on my feedback.

  • flosserelli

    Those kooky Koreans. Overcompensating much?

  • Tres Waters

According to the news he wasn’t that well off. Also, I wouldn’t consider what he had high level. He wasn’t exactly going in with assault rifles and he didn’t have any bombs that I’m aware of plus if he did he would’ve had to have made them himself which wouldn’t set off any flags. Guns are easy to get ahold of, plain and simple. What should’ve thrown up some flags were the videos, and they did, but the cops didn’t do anything about it.

    • wmsco1

This is Droid life not the WWDC event!

  • https://www.heartbleedbug.com/ Intellectua1

I’m not going to lie if this thing had Note 3 specs I’d be interested. Why make bigger phones with crappy specs. Like the Galaxy Mega.

  • wmsco1

You are so ugly, your Momma had to buy a 7″ phone , so the Dog would play with the you.

  • wmsco1

I wonder if it has the “curve”, if it does it needs a nose and ear piece

  • wmsco1

I got a phone bigger than that, a 65″ sets on the wall.

  • NexusMan

Looks ridiculous to me, but as the article says, it’s Korea only, where I’m told big phones are all the rage. So, if there is a market for it there, and it is only being released over there, don’t understand all the negative comments here about it. Let them be happy with their phablet.

  • Chris Lee

    Never go full retard.

  • wmsco1

    Mobile phonebooth.

  • Ryan Chapman

    Wow, that’s borderline mental

  • cnn army

holding something that large to make calls looks ridiculous

  • howitzerr

Wow… that guy with that “phone”. If this isn’t Samsung jumping the shark, I don’t know what is.

Also what are they smoking over there… must be some good stuff!

  • sk102704

Well, it seems to make the people in the picture very happy.

          • michael arazan

Technically Google rules the Android world, Samsung and LG just govern parts of it

          • Danmheadache

You are right though thanks to Samsung and Galaxy devices, Android has grown so much in the world within few years! Also as you can see LG G3 is becoming more popular, maybe even the phone of this year. And as Korean, I am really proud of these awesome companies!

    • ImmaDroid

I can only imagine whats on that screen.. must be Justin Bieber having sex with an octopus

  • jim

looks like a replacement for the mega, huge screen but not much inside , using up all their old processors and such

  • Ryan N

Holy crap! On the Sony “next big thing” post earlier today I joked about Samsung releasing a huge phablet device… Hours later…

    Fruition! Unbelievable.

    • blahblahblah

Maybe because rumors of the “W” have been going on for weeks. Oh let me guess, you didn’t see them though did you? /s

      • Ryan N

Honestly, I didn’t know. I try not to follow Samsung news. I was making a joke which I believed was nonsense. Lol

        • Tommy

You sure jumped on THIS story, for not following Samsung

          • Ryan N

I read all DL articles. Ha

  • Eric Hare

Terrible phone. Awful design, huge, and shipping with… Jelly Bean?!?!

  • moew

If I could use my N7 2013 to place calls against my head, I would.

Only problem is all voip clients use “speaker phone” mode on the N7. :(

So I can’t imagine using my N7 in the manner described by the Kellex.

  • Ben Murphy

Started from the bottom now they….well, going back to the bottom.

  • Tony Byatt

    Yeah…that guy looks ridiculous…

  • Gamma

    WTF is right….WTF
