Nova Launcher 3.0 Beta 1 Released, Brings a Ton of Enhancements and New Features

Nova Launcher

Thought Nova Launcher development was dead? Think again. Today, Nova Launcher received a massive beta update, bringing it to version 3.0. With so much time going by since the last major update to Nova, the changelog is quite extensive for today’s update, with plenty of new features and tools to help trick out your home screen experience.

The update includes a new persistent search bar look (sexy honeycomb), sub-grid positioning, custom label colors, full 4×1 widget support in the dock, greater control of placement/size/cropping of app icons, and a ton more.

Take a peek below at a partial amount of the massive changelog.

What’s New

  • Subgrid positioning.
  • Snap widgets/icons to half cells.
  • Greater control of placement/size without shrinking/cropping app icons.
  • Custom label colors (desktop, dock, drawer).
  • Individual drawer tab colors (tap on the tab and select Edit).
  • New tab style Colorblock.
  • Vertical drawer scrolls under transparent navbar.
  • Backup/Restore using Kitkat’s Document Provider (supports ext-sdcard, Drive, Box, etc).
  • Full 4×1 widget support in dock.
  • Individually toggle widget padding (long-press on widget and select Padding).
  • Nova Action for First Item In Folder (Use with swipe/tap action of folders).
  • Honeycomb style persistent searchbar available on phones.
  • Slight visual refresh (settings screen, menu icon, color picker).

The changelog looks massive, so head here to see the whole thing.

what’s the clock are you using?

  • Malcolm Love

That sub grid positioning was really all I was waiting for.

  • Soto

    That wallpaper! Link?

  • B T

Thanks for the heads up on the beta update, Tim! And thanks to commenters on the Lumos icon pack used in the article photo. Started using it last night, and I love it! Now how about that clock widget? What’s that from?

Nova Launcher here I come. They just need to bring the lock hidden apps feature and goodbye GO Launcher. Go Launcher 5’s update was no where near what I was expecting. For them to be so popular I expected them to do better.

  • Marco De Paulis

How has nobody added the Google Now left homescreen page function yet??? It’s so convenient, but I want to be able to customize my drawer, widgets, etc. :(

    • WhiteMike0903

I was just trying to see if with the persistent search bar you can use the “OK Google” command. Won’t work.

    • Jeff Badger

Because the Google Now homescreen is built into the search app. For a custom launcher to do this, a developer would literally have to modify the Google Search app and repackage it with all the features that make Nova (and all the others) so great. Any developer that did this would probably have their app pulled from the Play Store and has his/her developer account suspended. Most likely, developers would need Google to release an API that allows 3rd party launchers to utilize Google Now.

      • Marco De Paulis

Well that explains it. I also don’t see Google releasing that since that’s something that makes their Nexus type devices stand out. Now I need to decide which functionality to keep, Google Now or more customization :/ Thanks for the informative response.

Looking forward to it. Been using just basic Trebuchet for a while, but this might make me switch back

  • amanitis

I think Nova Launcher is the best home app replacement! I used it in my nexus 4 and i had never problem with it!

“Share Your Homescreen” coming soon now…?

    What is sub-grid positioning?

    • http://www.rebelwithoutaclue.com/ Rebel without a Clue

Suppose your grid is 8×8, you can place 8 icons on a row and 8 icons on a line. They would all be aligned perfectly on that grid. But now you can place an icon halfway grid position 1 and 2 for instance. Like you see in Brady’s post.

      • ChristianPasquariello

Thanks I figured it out. Was tired last night. Lol.

        • http://www.rebelwithoutaclue.com/ Rebel without a Clue

          lol I know the feeling

  • Carlos Aguilera

What’s the wallpaper? I really like it!

    • Christian Trevor Clauss

    • New_Guy

      Ho…lee…crap d(o.O)b

    • Alexa White

      What icon set is this?

    • needa

i really like that. nova takes my battery down about ten percent, so i don’t use it. but i will for sure crank the app back up once this update hits the play store.

    • http://people.ign.com/mrfrodo24 MrFrodo24

      Useful? No. Awesome looking? Absolutely.

    • http://people.ign.com/mrfrodo24 MrFrodo24

Okay, for the life of me, I can not find the subgrid positioning settings. Where are they?

      • Brady

It’s not a setting, per se…it’s a feature that’s baked in to the beta. Try moving an icon to the middle of what would otherwise be 2 grid positions.

I don’t know how else to describe it…just mess with it. ;-)

        • http://people.ign.com/mrfrodo24 MrFrodo24

You mean imbetween two grid locations? I’m trying, but nothing’s happening, and I have the Beta 3.0 2

    • George264

      Icons?
      Nevermind didn’t read below.

    • Patrick

Can ou pass me the wallpaper’s link?? Thanks mate!

      • Brady

It’s an LG G Flex wallpaper with adjusted contrast . . . sorry, but i ‘ve changed wallpapers since that shot. Google search should provide results..

  • Gr8Ray

Does anyone else wonder why the makers of the more popular launcher apps like Nova don’t seem to care about Car Mode? Seems like it would be such an easy value add for them.

  • schlanz

4×1 widget support in dock.. that is AWESOME

    • rodney11ride

gotta ask what widget your using… all the ones i have wanted to slide down there get cut off

      • schlanz

google search bar, google play music (cuts off the text, but I don’t mind that) and slider widget for different volume controls.

  • Johnny Steele

I have been waiting since December for this. :3

  • Shane Redman

Nice……but I’ll keep GEL’in for now. One day I may move back to Nova

    • El_Big_CHRIS

This. I don’t regret buying nova prime, but GEL with xposed is all I need. I love it so much I haven’t looked into anything.

  • Alec

    What background is that??

  • hekks

where can i get that background?

    • Jonathan

It is one of the backgrounds in the Lumos icon pack.

  • RoadsterHD1

  • Ray

    • Guy Pierce

          • Ray

Believe it or not one cannot party 24/7 and it gets old after awhile. After 5yrs I’m over it haven’t been on the strip in months.

          • needa

that is how i feel about living on the water. i totally get where you are coming from.

    • WhiteMike0903

How did you get the tab red without changing the text color under the apps? I like the photo video tab with the icons. Nice idea.

      • Ray

        Nova settings>drawer>tab style>colorblock
