Alleged HTC One M8 “Prime” Specs Leaked Thanks to Twitter Beef

htc logo

Over the past few hours on Twitter, @evleaks has taken to de-mystify an upcoming HTC product, known currently as the M8 Prime. The leak is thanks to HTC’s Global Communications Manager Jeff Gordon, who ambiguously told his followers on Twitter to be careful where they get their news from.

Gordon’s initial tweet stated, “In the past few days, a well-known leaker has been completely wrong about at least two of his leaks.” Taking this tweet personally, even though Gordon states it was not even about him, @evleaks decided to pull back the curtain on a few specifications for the device from Gordon’s company.

According @evleaks, the device will feature an exotic build material; a “composite of aluminum and liquid silicone.” As for what is inside, the “leak artist” states the M8 Prime will sport a 5.5″ WQHD display, Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, Cat 6 LTE radios, and will be water resistant, much like the Galaxy S5 from Samsung. If this does not paint a pretty exciting picture for HTC fans, then who knows what will.

We should note that these specifications align pretty well with another leak that took place back on May 6.

The M8 Prime is shaping up to be a very solid-sounding device. If anymore info is leaked, we will be sure to post it.

    will it be 10″tall? smh

  • sgtguthrie

But will they give it a camera that’s worth anything? I’m guessing not if they didn’t leak that info…

  • Synacks

If the bezels are shrinked A LOT, like that black HTC bar is completely missing, and it’s almost the same size of the GS5 (whole phone dimensions) or smaller. I’m buying.

  • Justen DeBowles

So wait… Samsung rumors the S5 prime and this site and its followers criticize the hell out of them. HTC rumors the M8 Prime and it’s OK!?
    #Hypocrisy

    • malcmilli

      people are criticizing both…

    • mark

You’re just reading those specific comments… Read other ones, lots of poeple get their panties in a bunch when their phone isn’t the best anymore after any period of time (long and short).

  • XboxOne

Another Prime Android smartphone? This is why iPhone owners are more loyal than Android owners.

  • https://twitter.com/KryptosXLayer2 KryptosXLayer2

Samsung releases S5 and possibly an S5 Prime model, everyone loses their minds regarding “how Samsung will justify the Prime to those who bought the regular S5…”

HTC releases a dozen different models of the “ONE” (should have only been one last year and done, but that’s another story), and people think “oh, that’s cool, no problem….”

    Hmmmmm

    • Orion

oh boo hoo, I’m crying for Samsung.

      • https://twitter.com/KryptosXLayer2 KryptosXLayer2

Nobody is crying for them, it’s called pointing out hypocrisy, I’m pretty good at spotting it

  • roberthenderson

If it has capacitive buttons, I am immediately selling my Galaxy Note 3.

    • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

It will have onscreen buttons. HTC is done with capacitive buttons

    • Dave

You could just run a ROM with capacitive buttons and lose some screen real estate.

  • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

    Love this..

    • Buckoman

That is one hell of a busy notification bar.

      • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

        Not really

        • Jordi Agricola

Yes it is. Damn, if you turned on NFC, Bluetooth and set an alarm, you’d only have space for 2 notification icons.

          • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

All I had was vibration on and lte unlike some who have a crap ton of nonsense. I keep my phones as close to bare bones htc sense stock as I can

          • Jordi Agricola

I’m not saying you have too much ‘nonsense’ running. I’m pointing out the fact that, even with only vibration and lte enabled, 70% of your notification bar is filled.

  • teevirus

Perhaps HTC should put a better camera in this one. Frankly I am surprised that they tried to double down on the Ultra Pixel cameras in the M7 by putting a similar camera in the M8s.

  • Jason Kahn
    • http://pocketnow.com/ Rithvik Rao

      Different Jeff Gordon. :)

  • crazed_z06

Hopefully they fix the camera too.

  • A.J.

Has anyone put 2 and 2 together yet and thought that the S5 Prime and the M8 Prime may have something to do with Android Silver? LG may not need a Prime version for the G3 because it’s coming out late enough to have all the top specs for Android Silver.

    • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

It’s already been explained bellow and I Dobut it. Hard core android fans hate high end specs

  • Cael

I’m not excited for this because its more than likely going to have that black bar and too damn tall and heavy. Probably thick too.

    • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

      Keep telling yourself that

      • Cael

I don’t need to. Look at the HTC One, One mini, One max, HTC One M8, and One mini 2. They are all too damn big and have a black bar.

        • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

My m8 is fine and the black bar isn’t that bad.

          • Cael

The black bar doesn’t have to be bad, it’s /unneccesary/.

          • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

What if it was on top?

          • Cael

Maybe not put it at all and just leave HTC on the back.

          • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

You also got to remember to that this phones design changes at the last minute.. The phone wasn’t gonna have on screen buttons

          • Bonedatt

            This.

          • fritzo2162

It’s a solid piece of aluminum. You need an exposure point for the antennas. That’s what the black bar is for.

          • Bonedatt

….Then they should have stuck to capacitive buttons like the M7.

  • Orion

Oh no! I hate great specs! What a bunch of whiners.

    • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

People are scared and horrified over change

      • cizzlen

        It’s sickening

  • Jonathan Williams

    Where’s the beef?

    • flosserelli

      Between your teeth

    • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

      At Wendy’s silly

  • bobbyp

So we no longer have flagship device launches to keep an eye out for but the secret prime launches a few months later. Great! I hope LG doesn’t pull this with the G3 because I want to get that on release day.

    • Orion

I think unlike Samsung and htc, LG got it right the first time. That’s all based on the rumors alone. If LG were to come out with a ”Prime” version of what is already a beast of a phone, this device would be straight from outer space lol.

    • AndroidUser00110001

This Samsung and HTC answer to G3. Don’t be surprised next year when the S6 and M9 are released a little later than usual…

  • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

I love it that people get so butt hurt over new specs…..

    • flosserelli

If all of this is true, then it will be more than just a small spec bump.

      • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

Exactly and people get so upset because they don’t want some features.

  • BrandonP

Ummmm how about the fact I just bought the M8 and will be PISSED THE F**K OFF if they release a better version of it a mere 1 month into its existence

    • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

Welcome to the wonderful world of technology.

      • BrandonP

        Lol touché

    • Jeff Badger

It’s probably just the HTC One Max 2 or whatever dumb name they come up with.

    • Bonedatt

It depends on your definition of ‘better’. Your current phone was the better version of your previous one and the best for your current needs, no? If not, why did you buy it?

      • BrandonP

Lol it doesn’t matter my definition of better…this phone was released last month. I will be pissed if I’m past my 14 day return date (which I am by a week) and they say…
“hey…i know you just bought your m8 but here is a better version of that phone just 1 month after releasing the m8. Sorry about that.”
I’m just saying I enjoy having the latest and greatest.

  • Nathan Bryant

But will the camera be honestly good? And with an even bigger screen, I see the bezel they use for internal sensors and what not resulting in a very tall phone. This could very well be the successor the phablet they made last year.

    • Ray

      HTC ONE MAX 2 lol

      • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

        Hopefully done right this time.

        • Cael

HTC can’t even get advertising right.

          • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

            That’s a different story

  • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

Hopefully it will have some htc scribe tech with a stylus to compete with the note

  • BoFiS

I’d be MUCH more excited if they made an actually good, high end, SMALL phone instead of just ever-larger handsets. The One mini 2 or HTC One Remix is a disappointment from a size and spec perspective given what Sony managed on it’s still 720p 4.3″ Snapdragon 800 Z1 Compact… sigh

    • Shane Redman

One day….we’ll carry around screens on our shoulders like they did boom boxes in the 80s

  • Al-Burrit0

    What phone is that?

    • hyperbeatser

      are you serious

      • Al-Burrit0

Yes I’m in a market for a new phone. ;)

        • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

          Learn to read the posts…

          • Al-Burrit0

There must be some confusion. I’m referring to the one in the picture.

          • Ray

            Nexus 1

          • Al-Burrit0

            Thank you!!

          • hyperbeatser

you’re in the market for a new phone, yet are wondering about one that’s 4 years old

          • Al-Burrit0

C’mon man. You seriously couldn’t tell I was joking? I did want to know what phone it was but when you ask me I decided to make it in a joke.

          • Al-Burrit0

I was sure you caught my sarcasm

  • epps720

M8 is already a big phone, now their going to bump it up to 5.5″ on the prime. This phone is going to make the Note 3 look small

    • Ray

exactly they made the 5″ phone way bigger then it needed to be this will be a One max size phone

      • LosttsoL

Ya, I would have already bought one except I can’t get past all the extra space below the screen. Will wait for another product.

      • RoninX

I think this is HTC’s follow-up to the One Max, and they seem to be addressing all of my reasons for buying a Note 3 over a One Max.

The 5.9″ metal-bodied One Max with BoomSound was just a little too big and heavy (and I like the size and weight of the Note 3). By going to a 5.5″ screen and a metal+silicone body, they’re likely to make it smaller and lighter than the One Max and more comparable to the Note 3.

Also, the One Max had disappointing specs (Snapdragon 600, same as the M7 One), while the M8 Prime should be a step up from the M8.

I’m happy with my Note 3 and not in the market for a phone right now, but if I were, I’d definitely look at the M8 Prime.

        • Calvin Williams

Why would you get the M8 prime over the G3?

          • RoninX

The G3 would be a contender, but I’d need to see both in person. I do like the design of the M8 better than the G2…

    • John

They shouldn’t have rushed the M8 and then release the whatever “prime”. Same w/ Samsung. DON’T TRICK PEOPLE INTO BUYING YOUR FLAGSHIP THEN RELEASE A PRIME VERSION 3 MONTHS AFTER IT.

      • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

One. The phone is not out yet

And two. They did this before. Welcome to technology. Get used to it

        • John

          1. Ok fine.
          2. I don’t think so. The One M7 didn’t have a Prime version. The X+ was released ONE YEAR after the X.

I really hate how product life cycles are getting way shorter than what they should be. Samsung & HTC shouldn’t do this. Plus calling it Prime just sounds like a “S” upgrade to iPhones, only it’s every half a year.

          • AndroidUser00110001

The Samsung J released a few months after the S4 with better specs says hi.

          • epps720

Not in the US, so it doesn’t really effect most of us here

      • epps720

I agree, I would be pissed if I bought an M8 or S5 already. If anything let people know before they buy the M8 that a prime version will be released. Though that would probably hurt sales.

        • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

Why would they do that? RoFL

          • epps720

they obviously wouldn’t, as I said it would hurt their sales. Just saying on the consumer end, I would be pissed. I can’t recall a phone company doing this since the Razr and Razr Max a few years back so it’s not like it’s a common occurrence

          • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

I’m fine with it. I ow the an m8 and maybe by then I’ll have this page off and I can get a new phone.

      • yankeesusa

I agree. What would be cool is if the prime is part of the google silver program :-)

        • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

          No it won’t

          • yankeesusa

I was just hoping. I’m sure its not also, plus silver isn’t starting till next year. But google has done crazier things in the past

        • epps720

I thought I read the Silver program isn’t supposed to start until February of next year and believe these Prime phones are expected early fall of this year, so probably won’t happen

          • yankeesusa

That’s what the rumor is and it probably is correct. I was just wishing, since I love my nexus and I’m going to miss it if the next nexus is scrapped.

      • Tyrone_83

How did they trick people? People know by now they’re always a better version near by when the first one gets released.

    • yankeesusa

The note 2 was 5.5 and most people loved that phone and the note 3 stayed about the same size so it shouldn’t be a problem for many.

      • epps720

wow didn’t realize the Note 2 was “only” 5.5. That’s crazy, there really is no such thing as a phablet anymore

        • yankeesusa

Yea, so far that has been my favorite phone of all times. Only reason I didn’t get note 3 is that google wallet doesn’t with it and I hate it when high end phones don’t work with certain apps that lower end phones work with. Maybe the note 4 will be better. at 5.5 it actually wasn’t too bad. I was able to do most things one handed about 90% of the time. You get used to it.

          • Dave

I exchanged my Note 3 after a few days, Note 2 was/is much better on battery at the expense of speed that can be negated by a small jump in network speed. Great device, but $300 at launch hurt to let go of so easily.

      • MistaButters

Considering the Original One was by far the largest phone with a 4.7″ display, and the M8 is the largest phone with a 5″ display, you can expect the M8 Prime to be one massive freaking phone.

        • yankeesusa

If its bigger than 5.5 I think it will hurt its sales which htc is not doing too good with already. But your right, manufacturers are going bigger and bigger and there’s a rumor samsung is making a 7″ smartphone. 5.5 is as big as I can use that still allows one hand use, barely. I guess it depends on how the screen and phone go together and the amount of bezel there is.

          • MistaButters

I’m not saying it will be bigger than a 5.5″ screen.

I’m saying that even with a 5.5″ screen, it will be substantially larger than the Note 3. Those front facing speakers and the bezel make HTC phones abnormally tall.

          • yankeesusa

very true. I really hope that htc starts trimming those bezels, they could make such better phones if they did. At least that’s my opinion. I mean, just look at the note 3, it has a bigger screen yet it is the same size in the hand as the note 2, actually some say its easier to hold

          • Daistaar

“If its bigger than 5.5 I think it will hurt…”

    • Big EZ

If they could squeeze a 5.5″ screen in the form factor of the M8 AND keep the front facing speakers, then it would be more bearable. I’m pretty much sold on the G3 though.

    • Mark

Since it’s HTC, it’ll have a 5.5″ screen with huge bezels with nothing on it.

    • sargentmajord

The note 3 has a 5.67 in. display just so u know

      • epps720

I’m saying the size of the entire phone. The M8 has a 5″ screen and is about the same size as the Note 3. Insert a 5.5″ screen and it will probably be significantly larger than the Note 3.

    • Dave

Add bezel and front speakers too….yikes.

  • http://twitter.com/coolralph Ralph

@evleaks is a little baby. he got so mad over one of my tweets he DM ‘d me and blocked me then tweeted me from another account lol

    • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

Well don’t back talk grownups kid

    • Ray

Tech beef gotta love it Just means he’s passionate i guess

  • Chop

    That thing will be huge!

    • hfoster52

      Too Easy

    • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

That’s what I said to my girlfriends said But my husband placed one in me and OH MY GOD

  • Alan Paone

I really wish this ridiculous spec race would cool it for a bit. Why oh why does my phone need twice as many pixels as my TV?

    • hfoster52

Because most people spend more time looking at their phone then the TV or their computer.

      • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

And whether you like it or not. People do watch video on their phones. Hence the video apps…

        • Dave

I’d bet nothing will supply video for 2k or 4k resolution for at least 12-24 months, besides native recording from the phone.

    • PoisonApple31

People want to feel like they are actually getting an upgrade when they purchase a smartphones, higher specs than their last device gives them gratification. Last thing we need is to do is go from the iPhone 5 to the iPhone 5c – same old crap in a pretty new bow.

    • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

      Because they can.

      Get over it buddy

    • https://www.heartbleedbug.com Intellectua1

I don’t get why some people have problems with the spec race. Who wants to “upgrade” to a phone with the same specs as the last phone they had. Wouldn’t be much of an upgrade.

      • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

Exactly. I upgraded from the EVO LTE to the m8 and that alone was a pretty big jump. Two years. If specs remained the same I would have not upgraded.

      • Alan Paone

I’d rather they upgrade the colour depth and quality of the display than adding 2 million pixels that only eagles can see. I’d rather they upgraded the storage, or the graphics or literally anything else.

        • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

So get an iPhone then if you want minor updates…

          Oh and *color*

          • Alan Paone

I didn’t say I don’t want updates, I just don’t want stupid meaningless spec bumps.

          • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

Well they are here whether you like it or not. Embrace the change in technology or stay stuck in the past.

          • Alan Paone

I’m so glad I will get to live in a future where phones still last a day on a charge because marketers can’t figure out how to sell different numbers.

          • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

Hey. A full day of battery life is not bad. Better then just a year ago.

          • Alan Paone

we could make a phone that goes for 4 days/charge with today’s chips and display tech and last year’s resolution.

          • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

That would be nice, but if it were possible it would have been done already.

          • Israel Ramirez

I HIGHLY doubt that just because its possible, that these companies are going to incorporate it into today’s technology. They are going to milk cash cows until they are dry, not because new technology that innovates comes along.

          • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

Besides I charge my phone at night much like everyone else does. So a day full of charge is fine by me longer would be nice but this will do

  • M3D1T8R

    Mmm… Yes.

  • Jukubabes

The 20mp Chip with ultra pixels wud really get M8 prime a chance

  • TSY87

Let’s get something clear here… the S5 is not water PROOF. There is a significant difference between water resistant and water proof.

    • Ray

yeah every site uses the 2 words like they are interchangeable

    • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

      It’s Droid life. If it’s not a moto x….

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

      Fixed. :)

      • TSY87

        Right on!

  • ross mintzer

Could all these prime phones maybe be part of the android silver program?

    • The Narrator

I don’t think Google is looking to sell in Korea only.

    • Shane Redman

it’s a thought…..but Silver isn’t supposed to go down until Feb. right?

      • ross mintzer

Wow i lost perspective of what month it is. This year is going by real fast.

    • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

      Lol Dobut it

  • Nice going, HTC. /s

Gee, us m8 buyers are just so friggin’ lucky, aren’t we?

    Thanks, HTC.

    • M3D1T8R

But this is a much bigger device, rumored 5.5″. Not really in the same class. I’m still considering an M8…but since rooting/romming my DNA I am not in such a hurry to get a new phone, so I’m waiting and seeing what’s coming next. G3, X2, maybe still hopefully Z3. And this Prime thing.. Nice to have so many options.

      • eee

.5 of that is a black bar though.

    • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

I’m fine with it. This one would be one Maxx replacement t.

    • Blue Sun

HTC asked you if you would have buyer’s remorse. They meant the S5, early adopters of the M8 are feeling that remorse. Another HTC advertising blunder.

  • Alec

Jeff Gordon is always the only HTC person to interfere with this kind of stuff, Tim knows :P

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

I keep telling Kellen that HTC needs to completely ban its employees from Twitter. It’s getting bad :P

      • T_Dizzle

No, I find it quite entertaining.

      • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

And not let the employees take home phones that are not out yet so they get in the hands of their kids who make painful 13 min YouTube videos

  • Ray

I like my silicone on my _____ not my phone!

    • https://www.heartbleedbug.com Intellectua1

So you have a pair of fake boobs

      • Ray

        women

        • Shane Redman

Nah, man, you said “on”, not “in” lol

        • https://www.heartbleedbug.com Intellectua1

Gotcha, I was thinking the other things are lambskin or latex.

    • The Narrator

That’s latex. Or you’re talking about something else.

    • Joseph A. Yager

      Computer chips?

      • Alan Paone

If you want the chip to not work…

        • Joseph A. Yager

True – the “e” at the end does kind of ruin that theory!

  • Foramex

    They don’t stand a chance against…
LG Optimus Prime- Transform from a phone to a flagship killer in under m8 seconds!

    • Ben Murphy

      ^ lolwut?

  • The Narrator

    It’s already too late.

    • A WOMAN ON MENOPAUSE

It’s never too late for caltrate

  • Shane Redman

only prime I want goes on my DSLR ;-)

    • angermeans

I second that my friend. I have a 35mm prime on my Nikon DSLR as we speak.
