Watch the Project Ara Developer Conference Live!

project ara render

Project Ara, the Google-run modular phone concept, is hosting its first developer conference this week. The goal of the conference is to focus on a detailed walk-through of existing and planned features for the platform, a briefing on the recently released MDK, and an announcement of a series of prize challenges.

If anything, we’re hoping we see real, working units of Ara. Up until now, all we have seen are non-working concept models and some modules that could, in theory, work on a phone.

The opening keynote has already begun, and you can watch it below. Once this session is over, I’d imagine that we’ll see bits and pieces of sessions throughout the day. Keep it here!

Cheers Garrett, for the image.

I missed the first two hours, watched about a half hour of it and was like “this is extremely boring” and closed it.

  • carl rainey

I can’t see the device being all that unique for each person. Each phone will have basic components and the only differences will be the size of each. For example some will have more RAM or more storage. Will the display be a module that can be replaced? Can the user choose between onscreen buttons vs. a home button? I think the 3D printing aspect is very interesting, but the only part that is really unique will be the shell.

What in the name badges is about to happen??

  • Mark Aaron Collado

he’s dodging the carrier question because he knows that google will soon have their own service in the near future.

  • Brendan Small

Can’t deal with the filler words, will wait for the highlights in the next post.

    • Mark Aaron Collado

yeah they’ll just remove all of the umms and uhhs

      • CHRIS42060

That would drop the time of the presentation down to like 30 minutes tops.

  • Silver Veloz

You guys are hilarious. Now, I hear every single “uh”. Now that you all said this. Uh, yah!

  • TrixzD

uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh Project Uhra ;) Did he mention Uh yet ?

    • Tyler Lawhon

You the guy who said this on reddit?

      • TrixzD

        Nope I don’t use reddit

  • Justin Everett

Wow….i thought you al were joking about the uh’s but i just started watching and dayum he does do that a lot.

  • CHRIS42060

I just counted about 80 instances of “uh” or “umm” in 5 minutes. The instructor/public speaker in me is cringing.

    • Roberto Taylor

Only 80? You must not have heard the other 300…lol

      • CHRIS42060

I only times/counted for 5 minutes haha. I also may have missed some since there were like 4 or 5 “uh,uh…..uh,uh,uh” combinations.

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

Uhhh uuhhh uhhhh I can’t stop laughing I’m terrible.

  • Jaxon Wright

    • Roberto Taylor

This guy needs to take a class on public speaking so he can stop stuttering and using filler words for sure! lol

  • hyperbeatser

if he says, “uh” one more time…..

    • CHRIS42060

Yea I cringe every time he says it!

    • Mark Aaron Collado

new drinking game. every time he says uh you gotta take a shot lol

      • Christopher Grame

        i’m drunk already…

        • Mark Aaron Collado

          whats the “uh” count ?

          • CHRIS42060

            I counted 80 in 5 minutes……..

        • turdbogls

dont worry, keep it up and you’ll be dead in a few….oh, oh, now your dead.

        • michael arazan

          1’m not @s think *s you drunk $ am

    • turdbogls

yeah, this guy is a horrible speaker. usually people choose good speakers for something like this….but obviously they just chose the guy that knows a lot about it.

      • Alex Farra

Yup. It’s a developer conference they want the guy with the most knowledge and who can answer the most technical questions.

  • CHRIS42060

Google is so funny sometimes…… no really what processor is in the prototype?

    • Dorian Brooks

      TI (Texas Instruments) OMAP 4460

      • CHRIS42060

        I was just being sarcastic.

        • Dorian Brooks

So was I. Guess they had A LOT of Verizon Galaxy Nexus (what is the plural for Nexus) & Nexus Q’s laying around.

          • Jaxon Wright

            Nexuses?

          • CopierITGuy

            I prefer “Nexi”.

  • Dorian Brooks

    TI OMAP in the prototype?!

  • Steve B

    TI 4460 haha

  • Dorian Brooks

They’re at the functional prototype stage…. But he cracked the screen. :le sigh:

  • El_Big_CHRIS

    front facing speakers? YES!

  • mcdonsco

Being a Motorola–> Google project I’m wondering if any of the camera modules will actually be a good camera.

That would be the only hold back for me.

    • CHRIS42060

That is the best thing about this project….. If Google does not make a camera module to blow you away someone else could.

      • mcdonsco

        Keyword there is “could”…

Unless this thing sees iPhone or Samsung Galaxy popularity it’s doubtfull there would be much in the way of 3rd party modules. My guess is over 90% of the modules would be Google made.

        • John

Maybe companies like Canon and Nikon since they don’t really have a smartphone line, just estimating…

          • calculatorwatch

This is the one thing about Project Ara that people always underestimate. Plenty of hardware manufacturers are itching to get into the smart phone market since that’s where the money is but can’t afford the R&D costs of developing a whole phone. They will be all over this. I’m talking camera companies, similar device companies such as Garmin, even Asus who has always been a great component manufacturer and has had success with tablets but not so much with phones.

  • Mark Aaron Collado

Why buy a flagship device when you can build one

  • Ian

There’s this other developer conference, you may even have heard of it..I/O. When is that opening up?

    • K

There’s this search enginer that has your answer, you may even have heard of it…Google

      • Ian

I’ve never heard of a search enginer.

        • K

Hit an extra key. It’s a downside of using a guest account, can’t edit afterwards.

          • Ian

That’s ok. I was being facetious anyways. I’m really just looking for someone to tell me when (as in what time) they will be opening registration. It looks like the answer across the web is wait and see. Thx.

          • K

No worries. I like being a smartass sometimes.

          • Laymans Terms
          • Ian

I saw that. But again it says “wait and see”. No definitive time when it will begin. Thx

          • CopierITGuy

Maybe you should just wait…. and see.

          • Ian

…a little late to the conversation.

          • CopierITGuy

I was waiting to see. :)
