Motorola Camera Update Turns Volume Into Shutter Button

Motorola updated their camera app today for the Moto X, DROID ULTRA, MAXX, and Mini, to allow users to take photos using the volume button. Previously, you could only take photos by tapping the screen, so Motorola decided to give you all an option, in case you happen to like physically pressing a button.

And that’s pretty much all the update does. The rest is bug fixes.

Moto X is really loaded with enhanced features which are better than any other smartphone available in market, with shake to start camera feature and voice control feature are amazing when its live to use. You can easily bu Moto X from Flipkart.

  • jrbmed08

I’ve missed having a physical button for the shutter ever since I moved on from the original Motorola Droid. Definitely going to use this. One of my few complaints about the Moto X was that I always found it awkward to press the screen while trying to stabilize the phone with my hands, and this eliminates that issue.

  • JRomeo

I notice this also works on a stock Nexus5. Nice 🙂

  • Marcos Reves

It’s nice to have Motorola thinking of this, but at least in the Moto X, the Volume button is just awkward to use as a shutter button. The Sleep button would be perfect for the task, since it’s well placed for this, but I understand why they didn’t use it.

Let’s hope that Moto X2 can bring us a better button placement for this.

    • Tom Z

Actually, the power/sleep button is too close to the camera lens. I found volume down to be the perfect button for picture taking. Thanks Moto!

  • I read this headline and thought the update was giving users shutter “control”… as in: vol up increases shutter speed, vol down decreases shutter speed… That would have been a much cooler update.

    • arthuruscg

That would be a sweet power user option. Combined with a swipe from the volume key area to choose between F, shutter speed, and ISO.

  • Ryuuie

That is entirely too much food. 😐

  • cgalyon

That’s a nice update! I still feel that the camera hasn’t been as good with focusing since 4.4.2, but that may just be my unit. I will continue to hope for improvement in the phone’s indoor photo quality while appreciating all of the other improvements they make to the device as a whole

  • Kevin

    Bring back photosphere.

  • Kevin

    Moto X Master Race.

  • Bryan

The complaints about picture quality are funny.
I was on vacation last week in Southern California for spring break. Took the family to the beach and Disneyland. We were with some good friends who are Apple people – everything Apple. We were having photo “contests” on the beach and my friend made the comment that my Moto X takes amazing pictures compared to his iPhone 5. It was sunset and I have to admit, the pictures were pretty darn good!

    • Bryan

      Some samples

      • rq3747

Those are really nice pics. I find that too many of my pics taken under close-to-ideal lighting conditions have softer edges (blurriness) than what I would get from previous phone camera, but I admit to having taken some amazing shots with my MotoX too.

  • rq3747

Are any of the “bug fixes” related to picture quality I hope?

  • You forgot the Moto G 😛

  • taintbreath

Did they fix the bug that causes the camera to take useless, horrible photos?

  • Jeff

Very happy with this, as I missed it from when I had my Nexus 5. Too bad the camera still isn’t as good at the Nexus 5 though…

  • D.Moto.X.

Sweet!!!!! Another article about the Moto X! I can read 100s of articles about it all day everyday! Glad I have DL to keep them coming in floods!

    • Nikuliai

do we have other news that the site is NOT covering? cuz I see the same ammount in every damn forum, the point on Moto making more news is just because they are the only OEM right now that actually tries to fix or improve something they messed up in their devices

      • D.Moto.X.

They never reported how Google/Microsoft are going after dual-boot devices? They never reported on the Samsung Ultrasound cases? Countless other things?

        • Haris

last time i checked this was “droid-life” <– motorola is the primary manufacturer of "droid" phones, makes sense that they would be highlighted

          • D.Moto.X.

I only gave a few examples @Nikuliai:disqus. I mean, really there’s countless things they don’t report, but you hear about every little lame thing that has to do with the Moto X.

          • Nikuliai

That may be true, I can’t be really objective here since I like the phone a lot so I actually look forward to those news, but they do report of every soak test on HTC and Samsung aswell and a lot of news on em too, so my guess is that you’re not objective either, but who cares, in any case if you don’t like to read the news of Motorola just skip it, nobody forces you to read every single news

          • D.Moto.X.

I won’t have anything to read if I skip all the Moto X articles. It’s Moto X all day everyday around hurr 😛

          • Nikuliai

on the last 33 post only 3 mention the X, that’s 1/11 ~~ 9% ratio, and 2 of those aren’t specific about the Moto X but about Motorola Apps, so if you wanna reduce to the X you have only the soak test to count on… if you wanna skip all the news specifically about the X and just the X you have 32 of 33 post to read, that’s a 3% ratio about the X and 97% of the posts about anything else (where you can read and be happy), but you chose to whine here… I don’t really get the point of your whining man…

PS: this post is not about the X, so you’re kind of made my point already

          • D.Moto.X.

Except they aren’t reporting on the Motorola company specifically with these articles Haris and the X isn’t a Droid so your point is kind of a reach…

          • Nikuliai

you mean with the 5 news about the 360? that’s Motorola, lenovo deal? Motorola, Moto G? Motorola, to be fair, it looks to me that Motorola is just making a lot of news, and to me that’s because they need to since they are just a little far behind to be considered “serious” again so they better risk it all or go home

          • Lucki

The X may not be a Droid phone, however the update also came to the Droid Ultra, Maxx, and HD. Those names are actually in the 1st line of the article. Your “counterpoint” sucks.

        • Nikuliai

you mean the huge embarrasment of the Google/Microsoft blocking dual boot devices? cuz Microsoft denied that and nobody could get proof of it either, they all made posts saying “we’ll update when we talk with asus and never updated”, the whole thing is just rumors right now, and they don’t post THAT MANY rumors here

On the Ultrasound cases I have no clue why this happened but basically nobody covered it (I read 5 tech sites and none reported on it, tbh I noticed when you posted this, but it wasn’t a big deal on the regular blogs), maybe because it’s just for people visually impaired and the tech blogs usually just ignore this matter

  • fritzo2162

I like this! I want it on my HTC One…any alternatives?

  • pizzaparties

This is a step in the right direction, but this camera could use a lot more work though. I really miss having a timer option like the samsung cameras have–best way to take a selfie.

  • f-m-l

Who wins in a fight: Moto X vs. .. nevermind Moto X wins.

  • f-m-l

I’ve been waiting all day to read another article about the amazing moto x, i knew you wouldn’t leave me hanging. MOTO-LIFE! An intense Motorola news community bringing you the latest in motorola products, rooting, apps, and every single little update motorola does to it’s beloved Moto X.

    • f-m-l

That pizza looks 10x more delicious on a moto x screen than any other phone. I saw a pizza pic on a N3 and it looked like dumpster pizza, because active display and voice control duh. Can you send that pizza pic to view on the new moto360?

    • nahbro25

Do you have buyers remorse over your phone? No need rage and be jealous, you can buy one too.

      • f-m-l

not raging, quite cheerful actually =) i was actually just wondering if the moto x can in fact cook a pizza? maybe in the next camera update!

    • morteum

    • Kevin

Moto X phone is best phone.

  • i still wish there was more exposure controls…

  • RoadsterHD1

  • Ralph Bretz

Again Motorola gives us a good update. It’s the little things like this I hope they keep up with in the future with the new management.

Surprised there hasn’t been any of the usually anti moto cry babies b!tching about another moto article.

    • Nexoduss

Still a shitttyyy camera compared to the g2

      • Ralph Bretz

You can have the better camera camera, I’ll take the best overall phone, as has been voted by numerous Android sites.

  • blakjakdavy

The camera also seems to be ready to take a picture waaay more quickly after the wrist twist gesture with this update.

  • hyperbeatser

it’s good for selfies/portraits, and ok for lefties, doesn’t make sense at all for trying to use it with your right hand

    • Robert Macri

Why not? Turn the phone around so that the volume keys are on top and it works great. Much easier to get a good picture this way.

  • Zach B.

Confirmed to work with the inline mic button on my headphones as well (SOL)

    • froyoman

This is the killer part of the update to me. I tried it with a cheap pair of buds that only has one button (pause/play) and it worked for snapping a picture. My son likes to make stop motion videos but sometimes moves the phone/camera when pressing the screen (he’s only 7). This will allow him to do it without touching the device.

      • mizo

Also my favorite feature. I tried out two sets of earbuds. They didn’t work on the Samsung set that came with my Galaxy Tab 8.9(one button), but they did work on my Klipsch S4i(center button).

  • NexusMan

    Motorola is BOSS.

  • Arslan Jumaniyazov

Just tried it and love it!

  • Josh Clarence

Any word yet on when they are going to fix the battery drain issue with Android OS and the 4.4.2 update?

    • Robert Macri

I have no issue with this.. You probably have a rogue app.

      • grumpyfuzz

It’s not rogue app, even droid life made an article about the battery drain on some moto xs running 4.4.2

        • kendokan

Do you have some kind of photo/video sync set up? Either to G+, or FB, or Dropbox, or… I could see that chewing up battery.

    • ForrestTracey

It’s something in the camera app on my phone. I use the Camera… I get crazy battery drain (Android OS). I reset my phone and don’t use the Camera… no battery drain and the phone is completely like it used to be before 4.4.2. Don’t know about this new update though. Maybe if you are getting the drain you can try to narrow it down to your camera too…. Just make sure after a reset that you don’t open your camera app. Then see how your battery life and drain is.

      • Josh Clarence

        Ok thanks, I’ll try that.

    • cns2007

I thought that was an Android issue, not a Motorola issue. Aren’t other phones also having the problem?

    • mattybeee

Ya know what – I thought the 4.4.2 update was supposed to fix the battery drain issue some phones were having – my battery life initially was great so I was looking forward to BETTER battery life. As it turns out, my battery life has hit the skids since the update and I couldn’t figure out what was going on – thought it was me. Glad it wasn’t. Hey Google – FIX IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Nikuliai

the last Kit Kat update has know battery issues with Qualcomm processors (almost all devices with Kit Kat), Google is trying to fix it and should release a patch “”””””soon””””””, but yeah, that’s my only regret with 4.4.2

    • rq3747

No problem at all with 4.4.2 on my unlocked MotoX on T-Mobile. I get a solid two days plus from a single charge with moderate usage and no special effort. Gotta love that!

  • Shane Redman

    small, but welcomed change

  • I commend Motorola for continuing to update their individual apps that add value to Android without bloating the OS.

    • The Narrator

Except that’s a gross looking pizza.

      • Raikou

        I’d still eat it

      • Cael

Thats what microwave pizza looks like 😛

      • michael arazan

I think he just wants evidence of what made him sick later on for evidence

  • gambit07

I’ve always liked being able to tie it to a physical button, you can keep it much more stable that way, at least in my opinion.

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Tell the truth. You just like it because it’s easier to take selfies.

      • gambit07

Haha, can’t say I’ve taken any selfies, but I would imagine it’s easier to do with an on screen button since the screen is facing you? I guess if it was a picture in a mirror though that would be true!

      • Tyler

Because taping almost anywhere on the screen was so hard for selfie taking.

  • Jeralmac

Kellex, don’t you know those oven pizza’s will kill you?

  • T4rd

If only it had a two-stage volume button, hah.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Can I borrow that button to take a pic of my busted bracket…thanks
