AT&T Galaxy S4 Receiving Update to Kit Kat Tomorrow

This afternoon, AT&T announced through their official Galaxy S4 support page that the device would begin receiving an update to Android 4.4 “Kit Kat” tomorrow. As of right now, the Sprint variant is the only other U.S. carrier-tied Galaxy S4 to receive Kit Kat, so this puts AT&T users in rare company.

The update includes Galaxy Gear compatibility (really?), restyled navigation and notification areas, new lock screen features, more emoji, wireless printing, and all sorts of other goodies. The AT&T changelog doesn’t give much, but we have a changelog from Sprint that goes into a bit more detail. You can find that here.

Last week, Samsung gave us the official list of devices that will receive Kit Kat once carriers can get updates approved. Be sure to check out the list if you haven’t. Also, our Kit Kat update list is constantly getting updates.

What is up with the power drain. Half the life. Any fixes. Why send out messed up updates that drain power of battery instead of increasing the life!

  • Eric Heymann

    417.66 MB update downloading right now……………………for SGS 4 AT&T

  • Terrel Thompson

um am i missing something?? i got the update this morning and with a download size of 417mb it didnt seem like it added alot. i was hoping for the dialer to be updated and for it to install the ge launcher but nope.

    • Adam Ropic

same here, i was hoping for the transparent bar throughout all apps. but its only on home screen and evolve sms :/ all other apps still black bar

      • Terrel Thompson

yea its pretty lack luster. not that happy with it

  • Bill

Off subject but apple pie is delicious.

  • Adam Ropic

i just checked and i have the update for my at&t s4. it’s 417.66 MB, taking a while cus my WiFi sucks

  • Just another reason for some people not to buy the S5…

  • Hopefully Verizon will be late to the party on this. I don’t want to lose root and tether yet lol

  • Timothy Sternig

U.S. Cellular has also released their KitKat update for the S4, so Sprint isn’t the only other U.S. carrier to release it so far…

  • JohanV

Internet Explorer lol… gotta love my google products.

  • DanThompson87

I heard the Kit Kat update breaks wifi tether, that’s a make or break issue for me. I will not update until it is confirmed that foxfi will work.
Also I’m still on unlimited, I don’t know what I’m going to do when they take it away….probably blow up the world or something

  • Mico

    Wish i’d see a 4.4.2 Update for my moto x on AT&T -____-

  • Ryan N

    And Tizen Next Week!

  • guested

Latest rumors are its prime version coming few weeks after release of s5.. I just wish DL would cover it since there are screenies online alrdy of 2k screen in test mode…

    • guested

Reports state Samsung is running into issues with the 2k screen and they are prepping for better chip

      • The Narrator

        I wouldn’t want to go anywhere near a phone with a 2K screen that doesn’t have a SD805.

      • Al-Burrit0

The “premium version” will most likely be the note 4 or if there really is one it will be priced $299 on contract.

  • Phuck_Awff

Verizon sucks and is a rip off

  • Colton

is this update like the s5 kitkat (newer look)? asking for verizon in the future of course.

  • Tower72

Dont forget…US Cellular has KitKat for their S4s also…Man I am so happy I went back to Verizon /rolleyes

  • Cameron Wright

My old One already has kit kat.

  • AbbyZFresh

And it took almost a year.

    • HaveSomeVodka

Since when is 4 months considered “almost a year”?

  • David Cohen

The kitkat update list doesn’t have this news incorporated into it.

  • EnterTheNexus

I hate Verizon. Where’s my Kit Kat update for my G2.

  • Drew

I don’t care. I love my MOTO X. Screw Samsung and my next phone will be Nexus 6.

    • AbbyZFresh

      • Adrynalyne

Or, you could not read it.

      • Michael Hammond

        u mad bro?

        • herpdy derp

          u dumb n*gga?

  • George264

Oh god, looking at this picture, the slimy glossy back looks better to me than the dimples. For some reason, it fit on the N7 but on the S5 it looks, off. The black and white look decent but gold and blue, god awful. The gold is like a band-aid. A little off topic but the S5 is making me like the S4 more, that’s not good.

    • Logan Jinks

It’s the dimple arrangement that works for the N7. The alternating arrangement is more attractive to me because the it breaks up the layout. Your eyes are much more attracted to diagonal lines. Where as the grid based dimple pattern draws way more attention to itself.

      • George264

You’re absolutely right. Just googled some images and compared them. The grid layout looks really sharp in my eye and it just brings it out that much more. Also it seems like there’s more spacing between each for the S5. Anyway, it looks terrible in my eye and I prefer solid backs like the nexus 7 2013

  • RaptorOO7

Nice job AT&T, so when will the GN3 update roll out? Looking at getting that or the GS4 instead of the GS5.

  • Pam Oakea

Come on Verizon….. Why must you always be last?

    • RaptorOO7

Because they are Verizon, they are last, will always be last and frankly don’t care if they ever release a FW update. They will keep telling us its all about the network. Yeah right.

      • Adrynalyne

I hate Verizon as much as the next person but:

        First non-Nexus to 4.4.
        First S4 to 4.3.

So they aren’t always last. Unless those two were mistakes, times are changing.

    • Michael Nichols

      At least their consistent

      • *they’re

        • Severo Rivera

          Here comes the grammar Nazi.

          • I am, I can’t help it. Its first grade stuff. THEY’RE completely different words with different meanings. I realize its generally not “cool” to be a grammar Nazi, but at least I know I never embarrass myself on paperwork and job applications.

          • Muddy B00ts

            You misused “its” two times.

          • Touché. But it’s vs its is not as severe as an infraction. It’s still the same spelling. Still excusable as it’s the most common grammar mistake on the planet.

But their and they’re are clearly spelled differently, so it’s also a spelling error which is even worse.

          • athom07

          • Al-Burrit0

C’mon dude. First rule of being a Grammer Nazi is MAKE SURE you didn’t screw up on your own comment! lol

          • I know, I know, lol

          • Aaron Lange

Nope, you just embarrass yourself in online forums by acting like a giant douchebag.

          • If I wanted to act like a giant douchebag, I’d type in all caps and curse words. Instead I opted to act like a moderate douchebag by pointing out people’s faults on the internet through thethe relative anonymity of my avatar. 🙂

          • The Narrator

            Don’t be a Tim242

          • Rob

It’s OK, it’s not just you. If English is someone’s first language, then I have no idea why they can’t even use the proper word. So this really has nothing to do with grammar unless you consider word usage as grammar.

However, it’s vs its are two different meanings; one shows ownership and one is the combination of two words. Just like their and they’re.

    • yeshlizayingadol

Verizon was the first with 4.3 on the S4

    • Jim890

Rumors say before March is over they will roll it out.

    • qudwls6933

Yea Verizon. Why must be last??? I still have 1 year and 9 months to go.

    • Rob

Seriously. AT&T is on a roll lately. Note 3, G2, now S4. But I wouldn’t trade in the first software update for my network speed. Recently I ran a speed test and was pleasantly surprised. 52 mbps up and 14.5 mbps down! It used to be around 15-25 mbps down in the past. AT&T in my area is doing 10-11 mbps down and only 1-2 mbps up.

      • allergic2idiots

Note 3 didn’t get kit kat on att

        • Rob

My bad, I thought I remembered a phone other than the G2 that got KitKat already, maybe that was the KitKat is incoming for the S4 post. Thanks for correcting/updating.

          • allergic2idiots

HTC one also got kit kat you are partially correct

          • Rob

Ahh, then it was the HTC One and G2. Thanks!

  • Mikey Styles

    Over/Under for Vzw S4 owners?

  • guested

Ironically, right after the s5 gets announced… and still no leaks on “premium” s5 details 🙁 smfh

    • The Narrator

There isn’t going to be. Sorry to burst your bubble, brah

      • Jim890

        Keeping telling yourself that.

        • Adrynalyne

…it makes absolutely no sense to launch a premium version of a product months after the “cheap” version. There is less profit to be made because the bulk of your sales went to the cheaper one. You first sell the premium version to maximize profit and sell the cheaper version later to get even more numbers. It doesn’t work the other way around. That would be like carrier starting their subsidized prices at 99.00 on contract, to raise them to 299.00 2-3 months later. It just doesn’t play out that way and people walk away pissed off.

So…keep holding onto that fleeting hope, but I have a feeling you will be disappointed.

          • Opinionated_In_Bangor

Do you not know Samsung? They release different variants of there phones all the time. Heard of the S4 Active perhaps? That was clearly an upgrade over the regular S4. So I wouldn’t put it past Samsung to have another S5 up its sleeves.

          • Bender Bending Rodriguez

The Active wasn’t an upgrade over the S4…

          • Adrynalyne

No, it was an alternative (not an upgrade), and only on some carriers (or was it just one?). That is not how you maximize sales for a premium model.

          • Al-Burrit0

No the specs were not on par with the S4. The specs were lowered a bit.

        • The Narrator

As Adrynalyne said below, why would they wait? They wouldn’t have a big event to announce the S5 then something later on. Plus, the S5 starts out at $199/249 on contract. What is the premium going to be? $300/349? That would be absurd.
