New Samsung Galaxy Gear Models Make Debut Leaked Render Appearances

Courtesy of @evleaks (as usual), we are getting what are believed to be the first two looks at Samsung’s next smartwatch(es), though the name(s) may now be up in the air. The pictures certainly represent two smartwatches that look very similar to last year’s Galaxy Gear, and are accompanied by the names Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo. But @evleaks notes that these may not be Galaxy branded in the end, meaning they could be a separate product category for Samsung.

Rumors earlier this week suggested that the new Gear smartwatch from Samsung would run Tizen instead of Android, so potentially by leaving the Galaxy branding behind, that could end up happening. That’s just speculation on my part, of course. It’s tough to tell exactly what the non-Galaxy branding could mean, but maybe Samsung is seeing an opportunity to create a stand-alone brand of wearables.

As far as the watches themselves go, we’ve got two models – the Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo. I’d imagine one is the higher end model (Gear 2), while the other would be the entry level choice (Neo). The hardware has changed somewhat from the original Gear, with both watches now showing a physical home button at the bottom and what appear to be two different types of cameras or IR blasters at the top of each.

I’m wondering if one is supposed to be the everyday, class-it-up smartwatch (Gear 2), while the other could be focused on fitness. The device on the left seems to have more metal and a slightly bulkier and high-end design, while the watch on the right may have more rubber.

soooo one has a camera the other doesnt… thats the only difference?

  • Rob Schoenfeld

One step forward 4 steps backward. The galaxy ecosystem only is an immediate no for me..

  • roberthenderson

Much better looking than the first generation. If it can work my phone calls and messaging well, I’ll probably get one.

  • Would rather get the Razr Nabu

    • ChristianPasquariello

Me too, I wonder when the developers will get the chance to buy for $50. I got an email but it didn’t give much information.

  • possomcrast1

It looks to have a bigger screen…Samsung doesn’t get it.

  • Collin Chapin

    Omg that looks hideous.

  • WCM3

I don’t understand why there is such a big bezel. Can’t they have an edge to edge screen, which would at least make the face much smaller?

However, it does look better than the original Galaxy Gear.

  • Orion Pax

Looks like one probably has a camera and the other doesn’t and the one without the camera will probably be priced exactly where it should be.
Home button isn’t a dealbreaker, also depends on what other functionality is built into it.

  • mcdonsco

Of course we know nothing for 100% fact, but my bet is on – FAIL

    • Patrick Crumpler

Fail if it doesn’t run cross platform or at least on any android device.

      • The Narrator

It won’t, keep a lookout for Qualcomm, Pebble, and Google. Possibly HTC, if it’s cross platformed

  • Trevor

Samsung’s got a major chub for that home button.

    • The Narrator

Until Apple drops it, (which they won’t) don’t expect them too.

      • Common sense

We don’t know what Apple has planned in store.

they said they will never have a larger screen but yet they got a 4.3 from a 3.5

        • The Narrator

They went from 3.5 to 4. Try again, bud.

          • Chris

            Thats still bigger.

We are talking screen sizes here bud.

        • JBartcaps

*Steve Jobs said they wouldn’t go bigger

  • Michael Adcock

The one on the left indeed has a camera (note the camera icon on home). My assumption on the watch to the right is a light sensor (most likely included on the left watch as well, next to the camera)

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Speaking of Smart watches what are we making of the Google Smartwatch story that just popped up?

    • Android smart Watches are lame

no one would wear it expect geeks

      • The Narrator

And again Chris, your fake accounts aren’t fooling anybody

        • Justin W

I think it’s hilarious that he upvotes himself too.

          • The Narrator

            Immaturity at its finest.

          • Chris

            Thats not me

        • Chris

Can you prove it is me?

          • The Narrator

Don’t need too. We know your ways.

  • jeff manning

Hey there is metal that can contact skin. Watch out if you allergies

  • guest

    Looks much much better

  • Matthew DiGiacomo

I think this is an indication that on Monday we will see a Galaxy S5 and a Galaxy S5 Neo.. The Neo being the cheaper, plastic version and the former being the “prime” version with a metallic casing.

    • Chris

      GS5 Neo is the GS4 S or GS5 C

  • Feed Jake

I think these look much cleaner and simpler than the OG Gear. Looks as if the bulky strap camera is gone, which seems like an improvement considering how useless that seemed. If the price is right, and the tracking is good, I could see owning one. That rose gold needs to go though. Barry Gibb be damned.

    • The Narrator

Still looks clunky and ugly. Oh, and it’s locked to Samsung devices.

      • common sense

        And you know this how?

        • The Narrator

          Again Chris, you’re not funny.

    • Hans! eye!

Expect the unnecessary use of a dumb childish image.

      • Hans Dirk Kwazneski

        Seriously? Chill.

  • Elwin Gill

I for one really like the OG Gear. I picked it up for my girlfriend for Christmas and she loves it. She has the S4 and I have the MAXX. Even though the watch doesn’t function with my phone, I am very pleased with what it does with her phone. I would love to pick up a smart watch for myself, and if these drop the Galaxy aspect of the device and add functionality to other Android (or iOS) phones, I think it would be a win for all. It is a great looking watch with a face that has all sorts of customization, that alone is fun!

    • n900mixalot

How DARE you like the Galaxy Gear!!!!!

    • Nexoduss

Yeah I have one as well and it’s useful in school so you don’t have to pull out your phone and imo it looks good

  • Alex Boro

Wearable tech is immature at its present state. I’ll wait for the final version of glass and the google watch.

    • guest

There is no such thing as google watch. But keep your hopes up

      • Joe

        Wrong. techcrunch.com/2014/02/22/the-google-smartwatch-is-real-and-its-coming-soon-but-maybe-not-too-soon/?utm_campaign=fb&ncid=fb

            Who’s Chris?

          • The Narrator

I’ll just leave you to your lonely life. Nature will take it’s course, soon.

  • evolutionx1

A physical home button? Like… really? Come on, Samsung!

    • Nexoduss

If you would have used the original galaxy gear then you would know that a home button is actually useful. Instead of having to swipe to go home up to 3 time you can do it with one click

      • PhoenixJ

The power button on the side of the original gear is a home button. I’ve only had mine about two weeks but just found that out.

    • The Narrator

      Yeah, i was like…

These lame GIF image reaction comments are overdone. Can’t wait for this trend to be over.

You must be so proud of yourself to use such a word to describe something you don’t like.

By far the best looking/functional smart watch out there. Def going to grab a neo.
