Goodbye, Flappy Bird.

flappy bird android

Flappy Bird has been removed from both Google Play and the iTunes App Store by the game’s developer, Dong Nguyen. The game’s success was apparently too much for its creator  to handle, even with the $50,000 per day it was making him. In a series of Tweets sent out this weekend, Nguyen stated that the game would be removed and that he “cannot take this anymore.”

He also mentioned that he will not be selling the game, that the pulling was not related to any sort of legal issues, and that he still makes games. Flappy bird and its reign, though, has come to an end. Well, it will likely still live on through third party channels or through anyone who has it installed still. There just won’t be any fresh installs from either major app store.

I’ll just say this about Flappy Bird. The game was a classic example of the beauty of a simple mobile game. We had a running joke around here about my love affair with Granny Smith at one time, but I still stand by my reason for loving it – it was simple, yet challenging, and I could play it at any time for any length of time. With Flappy Bird, you had simplicity, difficulty, and a competitive nature thanks to its tie-in to Google Play Games. You could pick it up, play it for 5 minutes or an hour, compete against friends’ scores, and then put it away. You didn’t need to pass levels, buy items through in-app purchases, or worry about the next big update that would fix bugs. It was simple. It was fun (for some). And everyone was capable of playing it at any time.

As you may recall, Flappy Bird made it into our top 5 games for January, which was a week or two before the rest of the world picked up on its buzz. We left it at that – a top 5 game for the month. There was no need for 4 SEO posts about it in a 24-hour period or guides on how to conquer it. It was what it was, a cult classic game that thrived through word-of-mouth before running its course. It was fun, it was frustrating, but we are most definitely ready for something to take its place.

Goodbye.

    What a moron.

“Mo’ money, mo’ problems” – Dong Nguyen

  • duke69111

Why continue to develop games, if you can’t handle the success of a major hit.

    • EvanTheGamer

He probably never thought in a million years that such a simple game could be such a big hit. And he could also be in school(high school or college, who knows), and probably just doesn’t need the extra stress.

I can imagine making that kind of money is extremely stressful, and he’s probably not equipped to handle much stress or pressure. Or there’s another reason entirely. Who really knows but him.

  • Sean Bello

it’s a brilliant move. he’s still getting ad revenue generated by people still playing the game and he doesn’t have to deal with the bs of App ratings and whatnot. it’s still making whatever it was making before.

  • CivilDroid

Dont worry…Flappy Pigs is on its way, im sure of it.

    • EvanTheGamer

Don’t let Rovio hear you say that. They’ll swoop in, buy the rights to Flappy Bird and make a wide range of spin-offs. Make billions. lol

      • CivilDroid

i should get moving on that then huh? haha

  • Chippah

Good, the game is stupid anyway, and uses Nintendo intellectual property. There should be zero hullabuloo of this dumb bird game.

  • Greg Abbate

    anyone got the .apk?

  • JRomeo

Let me make sure I understand this…. He’s cancelling the app in the app stores because there are too many people harassing him about the app…. so instead he’s going to work on other apps….. what if people harass him about those apps also, then what? Wouldn’t it be much better to release these apps under a pseudonym so that people stop harassing you? if he would have done that then he could enjoy his $50k per day income without harassment.

    • Ilya Kolodiychik

Seriously. Lights are on, but nobody is home. I’d figure out a way to maintain that cash cow of revenue. $50k/day? SIGN ME UP.

  • Brandon Golway

I just saw that there are two iPhones for sale on eBay and they’re going for OVER 80 thousand dollars since they have this stupid game installed. They started at normal iPhone prices. People are absolutely insane.

    • Ilya Kolodiychik

Must be nice to have money…lol

    • BlackMaGiC1o0

Lol I really thought this was a troll post until I went and looked myself………….WOW JUST WOW LMAOOOO!!

    • duke69111

That persons a genious if it actually closes.

      • Brandon Golway

There are a bunch of them listed one is as high as 225K! Someone apparently listed an S4 for a million dollars. Most of these have no bids but the iPhone 5 going for 88 grand has like 75 bids.

        • ricecake

Well yeah 80k for the chance to steal all their data? Isnt the only way to keep an app and sell your phone is to not factory reset ?

          • duke69111

In this case you would probably factory reset the phone and then just sideload the app back on the device.

          • Brandon

Not for Android: wipe the phone, place the APK on the sdcard, leave instructions on how to install it (pretty much just enable “unknown sources” under security and then tap the APK and hit “install”).

People were saying that something like this was possible for jailbroken iPhones too.

  • http://twitter.com/tarund TarunD

    His name is Dong…

    • Trevor

      A+ for you.

  • Adrynalyne

He might claim there were no legal reasons but there are just too many graphics in this game that Nintendo could sue for. The increased popularity would have alerted them.

So he took the money and ran. That is the most plausible reason.

  • bogy25

    1) How was he making $50K a day off this?
    2) This is a game that I could barely make it through 9 seconds of play before getting killed so how could it be a success?
    3) If he was making $50K a day WHY would you leave it, walk away and not revise it to continue making $50K a day?

    too many questions here

    • PSU_DI

The guy is from Korea if I’m not mistaken, and from what I understood the sudden increase in his wealth apparently has caused him a lot of issues where he lives. I’m not sure if it’s government or social issues but it’s definitely a different culture and mindset than what we have here in the US.

      • nina

I think he’s actually from vietnam. .. nguyen

    • Adrynalyne

      1. Ads. You can do this if you have a massive amount of downloads, but it is not sustainable.

  • fallsgable

$50k a day and the pressure was too much for him??? Come on….
I bet he was in charge of snowflake number 5….That’s got to be the REAL issue!!

  • Jroc869, Nexus-Life

I’m sure even though he said it was not for legal reasons it probably was.

“As you may recall, Flappy Bird made it into our top 5 games for January, which was a week or two before the rest of the world picked up on its buzz.”
Hahaha Droid-life just pointing out that that they thought flappy bird was cool before it was cool! Hipsters! XD

  • paul_cus

    Yeah, Sony Xperia Z1 Compact.

  • Ethan Besbris

    Just downloaded it. No ads.

it was a stupid game. but $50k a day? Holy crap. Dude is a fool to remove it.

  • Tk

Literally just downloaded this game from the play store… its still here, AND no ads, WIN lol.

  • Tom

You all are clones. This is the worst game ever, the fact you human bots even talk good about this game is sicken. Droid life you are officially a joke in my book for this article, the only good thing that came out this was that it is now removed. This game isn’t fun, I wouldn’t even consider this a game. This whole Flappy Bird game proved that people will just do everything that’s trendy. Seriously everyone who plays this throw your phone’s away and burn your house down.

  • Alex

All I can say is “What a retard!” I’m sure there’s plenty of people that could make use of that money like , I don’t know, charities!

I remember playing this type of game 10 years ago except it was Flash and used a helicopter.

    • j

This.. absolutely nothing new with this game.. but of course, helicopter was awesome and sucked up a lot of our time 10-15+ years ago, so this is just more of the same, wrapped in a diff package and delivered through a new system.

I wonder if this guy is friends with the Snapchat crew who turned down 3 billion. Must be something in the water.

Snap chat was stupid to turn it down… Then again the app was stupid to begin with.

  • KleenDroid

Best I could get after a few minutes of play was 37.

If he does not like the fact that he was making $50,000 a day, then why would you leave the ads on it making money? And why would you make an app/game if you were uncomfortable about popularity?

    • The Narrator

He made it in May 2013. It somehow got popular and he didn’t like it. He wants to stay an indi developer. Not some rich tool. He has to have ads, all free apps have them because Google and the developer makes money.

      • Chris

He shouldnt have made an app then. Theres always that chance it could be a hit.

      • MK17

        Wow, that’s a true hipster.

  • MikeKorby

Is it frowned upon to sell the apk now?

    • duke69111

There doing it on ebay for $40.00. Its not actually selling the app, just the service to install it on your phone.

  • Michael Suriel

Does he still get money from the ads? Or since the Play Store connection is gone does he also lose any profit?

  • George Davis

Play BADLAND instead, it’s the same game mechanic but with 1000x better graphics and sound.

    • Ben Murphy

Looks like Limbo, but with steroids, Xanax, and a little bit of Mary J.

    • La2da

My brother showed Badlands to me on Saturday. The sound effects are truly awesome.

  • TheDrunkenClam

    This game was dreck anyway.
    Good riddance.

  • Philip J. Fry

50k a day and you stop? Yep, that makes total sense.

  • http://www.hypable.com/ Joshua Nealey

Lasted maybe 2 minutes on my phone, didn’t enjoy it. Nothing like the fun I’ve had with Angry Birds or Clash of Clans.

    • http://andymerskin.com/ Andy Merskin

There were some reviewers (who, funny enough, spent the time writing reviews for it) who questioned whether or not it was a “game.”

I actually think it was a decent concept that just needed some variation to it. It’s not unlike the obstacle racing games (I forget the one I’m thinking of) that gradually get more difficult as you go, except, Flappy Bird doesn’t really get any more difficult than it starts out.

      I don’t blame ya man.

  • Carl W.

    Mo money, mo problems.

    • EvanTheGamer

Drug and alcoholic problems? Probably. Also lots and lots of stress. Not good. I can see why he’d want to bail out early before his millions turned into billions.

  • WK

weird. i got bored of it and uninstalled after 5 minutes.

    • Carl W.

Me too. If I wanted to play a game with 8 bit graphics I’d rather play something decent like Mario Bros.

  • Ben Murphy

I hate when I make 50k/day as well.

          • The Narrator

Thanks. I must have not learned this in school.

          • Brandon Jiang

You said lottery winners end up broke and dead. Are you trying to tell me most people don’t end up dead?

          • The Narrator

I used lottery winners. Because this guy basically won the lottery and it ruined his life. Aka lottery winners. It’s a simple statement, easy enough to understand by everybody.

          • Brandon Jiang

My sarcasm should have been easy enough to understand….

          • The Narrator

          • diversion

        • Ben Landwehr

True. I mean, look at Hurley’s luck after he won.

For 50 k a day you could hire a whole Dev team to deal with floppy bird and move on to other things.

50 K a day = 18 million a year, which would of been great for developing, which is what he says he wants to do anyways.

If he doesn’t want the 18 million just donate it to spinal cord and/ or Cancer research and make difference for others. Tons of charities out there to help others out in Lew of just keeping the money.

I read the guy lives in Vietnam, maybe he’s afraid of what could happen to him there like a kidnapping, or intense political actions.

He was supposedly getting used from all angles. Nintendo said that the art look as if it was copy and pasted directly from mario bros. and the coin sound effect was straight from some sort of old seta console. Reports were saying he got off easy as none of the large companies retained there lawsuits.

      • John

I was more bothered by the misuse of “there” honestly…

      • Tomek G

That’s what I suspect too. They probably told him to remove the game, keep your lid closed or get sued into non-existence.
He gets to keep the money. It would be very smart move on his part

    • nosedive94

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t he still making ad revenue from those who still have the game installed? That’s still 50k a week.

      • KleenDroid

I didn’t know there were ads in the game.

Then again I don’t remember the last ad I’ve seen.

    • EvanTheGamer

No kidding, right? Makes absolutely no sense. He was making $50k/day. That’s a WHOPPING $1,500,000 a month. I don’t see his reason for being unable to handle it. Maybe he knew that he would have to update it pretty regularly to keep up with users expectations. Or something else. But whatever his real reason was, definitely not a great reason to just discontinue the game like that.

Or he’s a high school kid or in college and he has other things he needs to worry about. Not to mention he may not need or want the stress that comes with making that kind of money on a daily basis.

Plus it’s doubtful that he knew that his small, simple game would blow up like it did.

        • napes22

          Sounds delicious.

      • EvanTheGamer

*laughs* Poor iOS users, they may get some great apps first, but if said apps disappear one day(like Flappy Bird), they’ll never see those apps again, unlike us Android users who can easily find, download, and install the .APK files for those apps.
