The Droid Life Show: Episode 48

Tonight, being Wednesday after all, is the night that the DL crew will gather to discuss this week’s news topics during episode 48 of The Droid Life Show. Topics will include Samsung’s announcing of the date in which they intend to unveil the Galaxy S5 (Feb. 24), pictures are circulating that appear to show off an HTC One successor codenamed the M8, and we have a brand new Red Nexus 5 in the house which we will be going over on air. And for those who want to see something quite amusing, we might be able to talk Kellen into showing off his new frames for Google Glass. They’re super classy.

As always, we will also bring you our highlighted apps and games which we have been playing recently, plus we will open up the show to viewer-submitted questions which we will answer live on the air. Sound like fun? Then join us!

The show kicks off at 6pm PST, 9pm EST. There is a livestream embedded below, which will automatically begin playing once the event starts. Until then, hang out in the Droid Life IRC channel and chat with us until showtime.

  • Fozzybare

hey guys, isnt this droid life show 49? cause this moto-lenovo show is labeled show 48… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpc2b7_yO5M

    • That was a mistake. It’s been re-titled as a special show. Good eye!

      • MikeSaver

Ron, I was wondering since you weren’t on the motorola show, why do you think the moto X failed so miserably? Was that to be expected? Sales numbers are pretty low and read recently the moto X was barely registering in usage reports among just Motorola products. I own one, and really think it is the perfect android phone with (almost) everything android enthusiasts have been wanting (stock, fast updates, etc.)

        • 1. They probably were not pushed in stores, especially in Verizon stores where Motorola’s products tend to do well.
          2. If someone knows they want to get an Android phone, they think Samsung, not Droid.
          3. Even though Motorola had a good ad campaign, it doesn’t compare to Samsung’s.
          4. The Moto X didn’t have a standout feature that is easy to demonstrate why someone should get it instead of an S4 or Note 3.

          • MikeSaver

Awesome! Thanks for answering my question. I would say I agree with all your points, especially #1. DroidLife had a post when the phone first came out that had some Verizon internal document for sales reps showing why to recommend DROID over the X.

I think it’s hard to make an impact with your very first phone, Samsung didn’t really take off until the GS3. I think in addition to your points though, the Moto X launch also didn’t help matters.

Motomaker exclusive at AT&T for three months I think hurt them. By the time it was available for everyone, Apple had come out with the iPhone 5c so I think the customization factor for the Moto X seemed less special. Sure, the customization is a lot deeper on the X, but I think the average consumer is fine with saying “oh cool my phone is yellow, blue, pink etc.” rather than getting into accents, wood, etc.

I’d also say the poor camera at launch (and thus in every single review written on the phone) also hurt it since that’s what most mass consumers care most about. If I knew nothing about phones and saw in reviews “lower specs and poor camera” for a brand that I’d never really heard of, I’d probably pass. Probably ties into your point #2. Maybe Moto might’ve actually had more success if they called it the DROID X (maybe not exactly that, but you get what I mean), same design and all, since Droid is still probably the most recognizable android brand, if not second now to samsung.

Really I think the biggest travesty is that Samsung has no real threat to its interpretation of Android, which I think most would agree, is the most terrible one. We got the vision of an Android phone that a lot of us have been wanting for a long time, and it turns out no one really wanted it.

          • Patrick Smithopolis

Android is synonymous with Samsung now. Even when people see me with my Nexus 5 they say I’m a Samsung guy and I have to correct them and say I’m Android guy, not a Samsung guy. I think if Samsung were to ever leave Android than devices like the Moto X will gain a foothold in the market. But until then, Galaxy phones will be the default Android device for many consumers.

I was on a plane about a year ago and I started talking to the woman next to me. We eventually got into a conservation about phones and she wanted to know if she should get the iPhone or the Galaxy phone (she had a flip phone at the time). I told her she couldn’t go wrong with either phone but nudged her towards the iPhone because I think it’s a more easier device to use for someone just entering the smartphone market. For a lot of consumers these are the default options because that’s all the see around them. Those are the “it phones”.

          • Yeah there are a lot of possible reasons that could tie in with its failure in the market. The camera definitely didn’t help. It may have sold better if it had Droid branding, but unfortunately that is a Verizon exclusive. From what I’ve seen the Droid models have sold better on Verizon than the X, which is interesting.

    • Thomas

      Somebody just started their period.

      • As offensive as that may be, imma let it slide lol

        • Thomas

Offensive? Loosen up Tim 😉 I’ll be bringing a bottle of Fireball to tonight’s show 🙂

          • Okay, well you have to take a shot every time you hear me disagree with Ron. Prepare to get trashed. 😛

          • Thomas

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

Lmao. I’m dying. Between the hours of 11-1130 am they get the most clicks out of me. The best way to do it is not check until about 1.

      • Chad

Why should we have to wait until 11 am everyday for the news? I mean what’s on the west coast anyway? Los Angeles and L.A.? Oh yeah!

    • John Legere

They are based in PST. Either wait, or find somewhere else to go.
