Cryten is a Beautiful Round, Flat, Neat, and Pastel Set of Icons

cryten icons

Icon packs for Android have come a long way over the last year or so. I can still remember years back when every new set was embossed, glowing, based on some gimmicky theme, or pulled out of an 80s rock video. It was rough, especially if you wanted to customize your device with some class. Thankfully, developers like Ryan Kelly, Dave Kover, Jsin Jaques, Alex Miller or Viktor Vucinic have our backs and are producing really beautiful stuff on a regular basis.

Vucinic released a new pack called Cryten within the last couple of weeks that you should definitely take a look at.

The pack is filled with flattened round icons (Hooray for round!) and is based on a set of pastel colors. There are some 1100+ icons in the pack along with 27 HD wallpapers that match up to the icons perfectly. He has been updating the pack quite regularly, meaning there are new icons flooding in at least a couple of times per week. And probably my favorite feature is his extra list of alternative icons. I can’t tell you how often I open a new icon pack and there is only one color for the phone or camera or messaging icons. Give us choices, icon pros!

  • Nikos Koufos

How do you use the alterative icons?

  • TC Infantino

All I can think of is Morticia Addams’ line in Addams Family Values “But Debbie…pastels?”

  • HotInEER

Nice, but way to feminine for me.

  • chjapa

Looks great, I’ve been using for a few days.

  • Guest

Looks great, been suing for a few days.

  • Liderc

Currently using Flatro, really like the icon set. It’s very similar to this, pastel colors and flat/round.

  • Daniel Gulyas

I love the look, but it’s another icon pack without Crunchyroll, which is pretty much my main app…

    • TheFirstUniverseKing

Just request an app you want themed to the developer. Most icon pack developers are receptive to their buyer’s requests as long as you’re polite.

    • http://www.kovdev.com/ kover

All of my themes include Crunchyroll. If you are torn about spending money, email support[at]kovdev.com and I’ll send you whichever theme you want. If you like it, buy it. If not, no harm done.

Kudos to the dev for all of his work, but I don’t really like this icon pack. It’s well done, just not my style. Looks like I’ll be sticking to Lumos for now. That’s the beauty of Android though – choices!

  • WK

for those that have tried Lumos, how is this compared to that?

    • SplashMTN

I like Lumos much more. The icons in Crypten themselves look pretty well designed, but the colors look pretty washed out to me.

      • WK

cool. it does look kinda too pastel-y after looking at it some more. i think i’ll stick with Lumos. also i just read that Lumos has more icons.

        • http://www.kovdev.com/ kover

Lumos does have more icons and more on the way this Friday. :)

  • dscott1027

    What clock theme is that?

  • http://ndroidme.com/ Jérémy Pougnet

Can someone share this wallpaper? thx! :)

  • SplashMTN

Pretty sure all of my google survey credits go towards icon packs now.

    • morgan boyle

are you getting surveys worth more then $.25 often?

      • SplashMTN

Not usually. Every once in a while I’ll get one for $.80 but that’s the most I’ve seen. I usually let them accumulate until i have $1-3 built up. If I want something that cost more I just use my card.

  • The_Omnix

I love when you guys post icon packs! I got a bunch of Play gift cards for Christmas and I’ve been buying icon packs like crazy. Flatastico is an amazing pack, by the way!

  • TheFirstUniverseKing

This has been my favorite icon pack since its release. I highly recommend buying this pack. I got Flatro afterwards and was really disappointed with the look (wildly inconsistent icons and nothing to really differentiate it from other round icons).

    • Trevor

May I ask how you think Flatro is ‘wildly inconsistent’?

      • TheFirstUniverseKing

There’s no uniformity. I can’t find an overarching theme within Flatro aside from them being round. Some icons look like they belong in entirely different icon packs. For example, compare this screenshot of my Cryten app drawer compared to my app drawer with Flatro (see below links). Why does Play Newsstand, Dictionary, and Play Books have such a jarring quarter black, three quarters blue look, yet no other icons have that? Why does Play Games, Play Music, and Quickoffice have this black background and small icon in the middle, yet no other icons have that? And why the hell is Titanium Backup (not pictured) black and white? It’s nothing like the original icon and is just plain ugly. The icons are just random and all over the place. Cryten looks much cleaner and more uniform.

        • Trevor

          Fair enough.

  • diversion

Anyone know what directory these icon packs store their apk in? I want to extract the apk I can manually align the wallpapers but it’s not in /data/app/ with everything else.

    • http://www.kovdev.com/ kover

All paid apps will be in /mnt/asec/[pkg.name.here] and you will need root to access them.

  • WAldenIV

Pardon my ignorance, but do you need root to use these icon packs?

    • charesa39

No. But you do need to use a third party launcher that supports icon theming. I’m pretty sure the big names all support it like Nova, Apex, etc. However, if you only want to use the stock Google launcher, you do have to be rooted. Then, you can use Xposed Framework with an app like Unicon (from the Play Store) to be able to apply icon themes in the stock launcher (only works with Android 4.0 and up). The only downside to that is that as of right now, you cannot change individual icons using Unicon like you can with a third party launcher.

    • JNex

      nope, just a launcher

    • CivilDroid

Nope. All you need to apply them is a compatible launcher like Nova or Apex. There are also many other launchers that they are compatible with but you would have to check the icon pack out on the play store and see what it is compatible with.

    • uzo ufondu

No you don’t. You do need a launcher that supports different icon packs though. Like Nova or Apex

  • Peter

I’m using Flatro, I just want these wallpapers.

  • viewthis66

where can i get the icon for what looks like a folder just above the home button. thanks!

    • Jb

Agreed, where can I get this as well?

  • Walter Partlo

The icon posts match up well with the Google rewards surveys. I usually end up having $0-2 balance at any given time. If it gets higher than $2, I expect an icon post soon.

  • Kenny Woodard

These are definitely nice. I’d suggest click UI if you want vibrant circle icons. I used it for a while. Beautiful and unique icon pack.

  • Droid Ronin

Looks a bit too iOS7-like for me.

  • cns2007

Very nice set, but what clock widget is that?

  • Philip J. Fry

I need a running tab for these guys.

  • John Legere

Google Survey’s does it again! Love it.

    • http://lukelarris.com/ Luke Larris

So apparently the CEO of TMobile doesn’t have $1.49? :P

      • John Legere

Nah, i’m pretty broke. Sorry brah
