Gmail for Web Integrates Google+ Contacts to Help Find People More Easily

Google is continuing to make Gmail better today with their latest round of further Google+ integration. To help with those times when you forgot to grab a friend’s work or home email address, Gmail for web will start suggesting your Google+ contacts as email recipients.

Of course, with security in mind, Google will give users the option to turn this feature on and off. If you wish not to have your profile show up like this or don’t want to see Google+ contacts in your Gmail, you will be able to turn this off when the feature rolls out to you. The Gmail team is starting the rollout today and expects most users to have it within a few days.

This is disgusting, f-you google. I bet you all the google employees are opted out by default so you can’t email them to complain

  • JRomeo

You only see people on Google+ which are already inside one of your circles…..

    • Adrynalyne

By default ANYONE on Google+ can email you.

      • JRomeo

if they add you to their circle… yes…. otherwise, no. they cannot.

Thanks for the link. This wouldn’t be as bad if they defaulted to keeping the emails hidden and simply used Gmail as a secondary way to contact G+ “friends”. I can think of a few times where I wanted to add a few G+ contacts into an email but didn’t want to share my email addrses. But the fact me sending the email is the trigger that tells Google it’s ok for the other to see my email is the problem. It assumes too much…

This will likely being another situation where Google releases something that gets a little push-back, and they either apologize, explain it more, or back off JUST enough to appease people… then 6 months from now everybody is over it and it’s just another brick in the Google wall of “convenience”.

It’s funny how Droid-Life finds this a good thing but almost every other tech blog is decrying this feature as an invasion of privacy.

Droid Life blindly loves anything that has to do with Google. Regardless if the press sees it as good or bad.

I sure as hell don’t want GMail syncing my contacts private info up to G+ or Gmail attaching their info stored on my phone and linking it automatically to their accounts that are private for all others to see. Can see someone searching for someone finding my links that may not be private accidentally and able to find info on people I know or for the same way for others accidentally. This sounds like something FB would do.

Here’s to emailing random hot girls from G+.. +1 for the creep team..

Eric, step down into the comment section my friend. This is a very positive outlook on the fact that Google is allowing strangers to email you. Is this OPT-IN or OPT-OUT? IT should be OPT-IN by default.

    • There was an article about his over on The Verge this morning as well. It will be an opt-out feature at the moment.

      • Adrynalyne

Pretty crappy. Next question is, where do I opt out at?

    • Everyone will be getting an email detailing the system and allowing them to opt out in the spot as soon as it’s implemented. No need to raise the alarms.

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Hmmmmmmm…. so many people wouldn’t pay attention to that email. It’s not good enough of Google’s part. One of those “OH….? What do you mean? We sent you an email”….

Nah…. It should be OPT-IN. They should know better

        • Adrynalyne

I opted out already. Jerks. This is the first time I feel Google has gone way too far.
