Moto X $150 Off Full Retail Promo Returns, 50% Off Accessories Too

moto x

Kicking yourself over missing out on the Cyber Monday Moto X deal that granted customers $150 off the full retail price? You, my friends, are in luck today. Thanks to a promo running through the Today Show (yes, that Today Show), you have a second chance at the same deal as long as you are interested in buying Sprint or AT&T models of the phone through MotoMaker (Edit: it now appears to be for all carrier models). Once again, you can grab a custom made Moto X at $350 without a contract for a limited time.

Similar to the botched Cyber Monday deal that eventually turned into a promo code bonanza, today’s deal also requires you to fill out a form and wait for a unique code to be emailed to you.

We should point out that through the deal you can choose to get the phone for $49.99 on-contract with Sprint or AT&T, and $29.99 on-contract with Verizon should you not want to buy the phone off-contract. During the registration step, you have to choose which way you are leaning.

This is how it works:

  1. Head over to this Motorola sign-up form.
  2. Enter promo code “todayshow50″ in the registration code box.
  3. Fill out the rest of the form with a working email address.
  4. Choose which discount you want: $150 off full retail or 50% off on-contract price.
  5. Click “submit” and wait for your code to arrive.
  6. Once you have your code, create your Moto X masterpiece, and enter the code at checkout.

And last, the deal also mentions customers receiving 50% off of accessories.

Go get it!

*Note – The Bamboo Moto X is excluded from the promo.

Cheers Michael!
  • TheOgler

I wish it applied to the dev edition.

  • Jacob Chang

whatever you do, just don’t read it.. http://bit.ly/Ends-HIMYM It made me really really sad :(

  • James B

I ordered one last time the promo ran. Had to return it because right out of the box it wanted to update the software but only via Wi-Fi. Well I tried everything and it’d never update. Kept it about 5 days, the whole time it said it was updating, would resume once in a Wi-Fi area, nothing never updated. Think I’ll stick with one from the carrier itself. Never had that problem with my very first one from ATT.

  • Jason

I pulled the trigger and got one, 32gb. I had the power dock in the cart but it was out of stock by the time I tried to check out. (2:30pmEST). Can’t wait to get it and retire the ole Gnex! It sure does need a break, been a great ride though.

  • Jeremy Martin

I can confirm it works for accessories! I just used it to buy just a pro shell case from the Motorola site. :)

    • NexusMan

Was that all you got? No phone too? How much was shipping?

      • Jeremy Martin

No phone. Shipping was $4 after I changed it from the $10 option.

        • NexusMan

Nice. I’m hoping they have the accessory I want, in stock, before the code expires.

  • Ben Jones

Anyone else think the flat $10.95 shipping on accessories is rather high? Looked into getting either some headphones or the Moto Skip and its the same price to ship either of them.

    • Hothfox

They charged me $4 to ship the Griffin desk dock.

      • Scott Smith

How did you get $4 shipping? Everything seems to be coming up around $10 for shipping.

        • Hothfox

All I did was apply my 50% off an accessory code and purchase.

      • droidrazredge

Since you ordered yours with regular shipping how much longer does that take to arrive to you compared to the 2 day shipping ?

    • Jeremy Martin

switch to the standard shipping at the bottom. Its 4 bucks.

    • cheezeboy

On the ‘review order’ page, it’s under the ‘shipping and billing’ section. A little lame they default to 2 day shipping.

  • GoBlue

Turns out you need to buy by Christmas Eve at midnight! DARN YOU MOTO! There goes my plans to use whatever money I get for christmas…

  • M3D1T8R

FYI, you can also get a non motomaker moto x for free on contract from Verizon right now, for their standard black or white version 16gb, with code VZWDEAL (well you still have to pay the $30 upgrade fee, but this is as close to free on contract as you’ll get). Enjoy!

  • ArrTooDeeToo

I’m seriously thinking about doing this. My Gnex is on its way out, but I don’t want to lose my freedom to tinker with my phone. Has anyone cracked the bootloader on the VZW standard model yet?

    • http://www.mecha-digital.com/ Jason@MechaDigital

Seems like with this phone all you’ll want is root. The Moto software tweaks are too good to give up.

      • kaufkin

Agreed. root for Nandroid, etc, but the stock setup from Moto Rocks. miss 1 or 2 Cyan options, but all but 1 I’ve found apps for. and the Moto toys more than make up for it. IMHO.

  • dapbmonkey4u

This excludes the VZW Developer Edition also. I knew it would be too good to be true, but I tried.

    • itsacardigan

although this is true….you can get a clone now….since they’re allowing you to use the woven white back now.

      • dapbmonkey4u

True, but I wanted the unlockable bootloader. I was having a hard time unlocking the consumer version and tethering was giving me fits. I need wifi tether. Had to send the return the phone.

        • mattybeee

I have the VZ Developer Edition. I always crack open my phones. I have not found a reason to do that with this phone yet. It’s perfect just the way they shipped it.

  • Gr8Ray

Don’t sit on those discount codes too long. They have an extremely short shelf life. As in, less than a week.

  • http://www.unexpectedparameters.com Aaron Hurt

I just got my code and it’s valid for 1 accessory @ 50% off.

  • p0k3y

350 s/b the standard price. That’s what this phone is worth. Don’t get me wrong – I like it. Its performance feels the same as my N5 and has some nice unique features. In fact, bought 1 for my daughter with the last $150 off and she loves it more than her old iphone 4s (which I sold on CL for $280 BTW – got to admire iDevice’s resale value).

  • Jason

*Accessory promotion not valid on on Chromecast, Roadster Pro, Moto G Case and Shells, JBL Micro Wireless, Micro USB Power Cable, DECK and TRACKS AIR by SOL REPUBLIC x Motorola products.

FYI and does not work for the Developer Edition.
I am probably going to pull the trigger on this. I can barely use my Gnex anymore even with 4.4.2 on it. The radios are horrible and I don’t think I can wait for the GS5 to come out. The though of another 3 months with the gnex makes my eye twitch lol

    • Jason

Does anyone know if this has been rooted yet or can be? I hope it’s not locked down like everything else moto/vzw has come out with. That might be a deal breaker for me.

      • M3D1T8R

Pretty sure it’s not rootable. Gotta get the Dev Edition maybe (which doesn’t work with this deal), someone can correct me if I have that wrong.

        • Gr8Ray

You are kinda wrong. It really depends on if the device can be successfully downgraded to 4.2.2. Worked fine on my Verizon model. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538896

          • M3D1T8R

Thanks, I figured someone would know more about this than me.

          • Larizard

            TEEMO

    • J Dub

I came here looking for this. That would have made Chromecast an instant buy.

      • GoBlue

It already is. Stop pinching yo money and fork over a measly $35.

    • Sankyou

It’s a weird root but I can confirm it works well. Tmobile ones are bootloader unlockable through Moto but you can root and maintain your warranty if you don’t need a full bootloader unlock.

      • Jason

I’m sticking with VZW but I just bought the phone off contract so I can keep my unlimited and leave whenever I want. I have a few paid root apps so I will probably root the phone later, hopefully it’s as nice as everyone is saying and I don’t need to for awhile. I’m sure I just gotta browse through xda a bit to find the root process.

        • Sankyou

Yes the root definitely works for Verizon as well. If you root it prior to updating to Kitkat, it saves you one step. It’s a strange root in the sense that it takes over your recovery partition and you cannot flash a custom recovery or custom roms. It’s very handy for doing the basic customization through Xposed though. With the X, that’s all you need IMO and also why I like the phone so much.

  • Chris

Ellen just announced the deal on her show as well.

  • Sean Walton

ANYONE NEED A CODE??? I will give it to the first person who replies. I’m in Canada so it will not work for me.

    • Q’s

Never mind, just got my code.

    • Aaron

      ill take it!

      • Sean Walton

        Promo Code: TODAY-KSCC-CG45-FBX2-YYI2

        Expiration: December 24, 2013 11:59 PM EST

  • Hothfox

Does anyone think the Griffin desktop dock is worth $20? I got a code so I could get it for 50% off, but I’m not sure if I want it badly enough.

    • ToddAwesome

If you’re a dock person, who needs a dock, then $20 is a good price for an OEM style product. That said, you can get a far less stylish cell phone stand that does essentially the same thing for a few sheckles at Amazon.

      • NexusMan

True, but you run into the questions of whether it will actually fit your phone properly, and whether the quality will be acceptable.

        • Hothfox

I wound up purchasing. $25 shipped is a decent price for an OEM dock. I use my Moto X as my alarm clock too, but I tend not to leave Day Dream on, ever. I’m very wary to leave the phone with the screen “always on”, even if it’s a screen saver. My GNex has a bad case of burn in, and I’d like to avoid that on this screen.

          • sirmeili

I use the BigWeatherHD daydream on my OG Nexus 7 and it works wonderfully. The fact that it is always moving keeps it from having burn in. sometimes I turn it off because I jsut don’t want to kill the screen prematurely, but either way, it should last pleny of time and it makes an awesome alarm clock. The only thing that would make it better would be if it had the MotoX always listening feature. It would be 1,000 times better than my “Moshi” clock that listens and takes commands.

          • Hothfox

Well, the Nexus 7 has an LCD screen, so it won’t get burn in anyway.

    • NexusMan

Absolutely. I got mine in the mail yesterday and love the convenience, neatness, and look of it. I’m actually considering getting another for my nightstand, as I’m using this one on my desk. Fyi, it also fits the Galaxy Nexus perfectly (I’m using it to charge that phone right now.

    • Usty

I bought one because I’m a sucker for docks since I use my phone as my main alarm clock. It does work with a case (air jacket grip) still on it and does put it in a clock-only screen saver mode.

  • Tony Byatt

Just got the promo codes. They both expire on December 24, 2013 11:59 PM EST…

  • brad0383

Can you use this for the developer edition?

    • Jason

No, stated in the FAQ page it does not work for DE

  • gpzbc

Ugh. i am trying to decide if I should pull the trigger on this and put my GNex to rest. Everyone seems to really like this phone, but I am thinking I will really miss the unlocked bootloader and the ability to flash custom rom’s.

    • Ethan

Get the X. You’ve got 14 days to return it, plus you can still hold onto your G-Nex in the meantime. That’s what I did and I’m loving the X – it is a different experience, but you get used to it very quickly. Hope my experience helps!

      • jefbystereo

Thats what im going to do. In CA you have 30 days which is plenty of time to figure out if the phone is worth switching into. I havent flashed a rom on the GNX in a long time, so that doesnt bother me. Tethering is the only thing Im worried about losing.

    • moelsen8

you wouldn’t be missing much. go look at xda development forums. there’s really not much going on with this phone, especially for the bootloader-unlocked ones. phone’s awesome though.

    • NexusMan

Do it! I did the same thing and am loving it and not looking back. The only thing I’m missing is tethering without root, so I will root if another option doesn’t come along soon. It’s not just that the phone is slick and smooth and awesome and has all the other great features we’ve all been hearing about, but Moto’s radios are a beast. I was getting, on my GNex, on average 1.3 down and 4.23 up speeds on Verizon’s LTE! Now, on the Moto X, I’m getting 36 down/up and 29 up. Apps generally are done downloading right after I hit install.

      • gpzbc

Thanks for the input. I use USB tethering a lot and I am worried about that too. I guess someone will come up with a solution eventually. I love my GNex, but I am tired of some of its shortcomings (crappy radios, etc)

    • Gr8Ray

I don’t miss it, and I don’t really feel the need (yet) to flash a custom ROM anyway. There’s not much development going on right now either. I felt the same way before switching, since I was a crack flasher on my GNex, but I just used the GNex the other day to test something out after having the Moto X as my DD for a couple weeks, and it felt horrible going back. LOL.

    • itsacardigan

you can still flash custom roms with a locked bootloader.

    • gpzbc

Just pulled the trigger on the 32 GB model. I am excited but still apprehensive. I’m off to learn about rooting this so that I can use some of my root apps.

  • jcorf

Dangit and I just bought a on contract moto x from Verizon yesterday. I missed the black Friday sale because I’ve been in Army basic training fur the past few months. Well I was just happy to have replaced my dying galaxy nexus

    • derbo904

      return it. you have 14days.

    • M3D1T8R

Hopefully you at least used the VZWDEAL code to get one for from Verizon for $80 instead of $130 (including $30 “upgrade fee”). Probably doesn’t work if you go through motomaker, but the normal Verizon black and white ones if that’s what you got should.

    • bellringa

      Call verizon I just got them to credit my account $50 now I am gonna call and see if they will give me another $20;

  • James Briano

    It’s on!

  • Hothfox

It sucks that you have to register for a code for the accessory discount, especially if you’re not buying a phone. That means someone else who wanted a phone might not get it because you wanted a dock for 50% off :/

    • Jason

Code only works for accessories if you buy a phone and for only one accessory.

      • Hothfox

Nope – I bought just the dock and still got it for 50% off.

        • Jason

Nice! Grats. I’m about to pull the trigger and get me the motoX, The Gnex needs to retire

        • Jason

Power dock no longer available!!! Damn!

  • NexusMan

“You’re not a store. We do not authorize using the codes for commercial purposes. If we detect you are applying for multiple codes for resale, we will not provide a code and we will invalidate previously provided codes.”

  • Morbid138

They’re clearing out stock for the Moto X 2!

    • NexusMan

They have plenty of time before the Moto X 2…but they DO have more color and material choices for the Moto X that are coming soon.

  • Larry Bublitz

Does the unlocked GSM work on both AT&T and T-Mobile LTE?

    • LP @ThisisEther

      Yep

  • John Murray

If you purchase an off contract phone for AT&T can you then use it on Straight Talk with their AT&T sim card, or do you have to purchase an unlocked GSM phone?

    • Scott

You have to purchase the US GSM unlocked phone.

      • moelsen8

actually i’m pretty sure you can use it on the straight talk at&t sim without unlocking it. that said, don’t know why anyone would get the at&t version over the unlocked GSM, all things considered.

        • Kyleinstyle

I did unfortunately. I swear I only saw the options of at&t, t-mobile and sprint when checking out?? I guess I was in too much of a hurry. Works out fine tho b/c I put it on straight talk.

          • moelsen8

yeah, just make sure you want to live with the bloatware, staring at the word “HOME” (network name) in the status bar every time you look at your phone, and a pain in the ass root method. FYI the t-mobile one is unbranded, bootloader unlockable, sim unlocked, and contains all of the necessary bands for both t-mobile and at&t (hspa+ and lte). it’s a 16gb black-backed developer edition, essentially.

          • LP @ThisisEther

            exactly…

          • ap3604

“FYI the t-mobile one is unbranded, bootloader unlockable, sim unlocked, and contains all of the necessary bands for both t-mobile and at&t (hspa+ and lte).”

            T-mobile version has LTE bands 2, 4, and 17
            AT&T version has LTE bands 2, 4, 5, and 17

So if you are on AT&T and your area relies on (or WILL rely upon) 850mhz band 5 LTE for good LTE coverage then you wouldn’t want the T-mobile version…

          • moelsen8

band 5 isn’t used by at&t for lte. at least not now, and not planned any time soon. the at&t model xt1058 has more bands than are used in the US.
            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks

          • ap3604

According to howardforums AT&T is already starting to deploy 850mhz band 5 (http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/4545-att-band-5-lte-850-makes-its-first-appearance/ ) as of august of this year.

          • moelsen8

hrm, if true, i doubt it would have any major impact on use. most of us will probably be on our next phones by the time it does. interesting point though.

          • LP @ThisisEther

MOTO only recently change the verbage from “Tmobile Version” to the “GSM unlocked version”….like, this past weekend recently…….you would have actually had to buy the “Tmobile version” but in reality, that is really the unlocked GSM….I had to find this out in XDA forums…

It seems like they don’t want you to know you can buy this unlocked customizable GSM phone vs buying a developer edition that is UNcustomizable, but w/ unlocked bootloader. …..andddd with the “tmobile version” the bootloader is locked, but unlockable…….

    • Kyleinstyle

I bought the at&t Moto x outright 2 weeks ago. Picked up the straight talk micro sim card, cut it to nano, put it in and activated and it works great!!

    • LP @ThisisEther

You can use the ATT on ST…It may benefit you just to buy the unlocked GSM, because you can use that on ATT and Tmobile if you decide you want to try Tmobile out……ALSO, unlocked GSM has NO carrier branding.

  • Scott

How long are these codes good for? Anybody know?

  • http://www.unexpectedparameters.com Aaron Hurt

I’m more interested in the accessories for a discount!

    • NexusMan

Me too. But it looks like you have to buy the phone to get the accessories deal.

  • Ethan

Got my (spearmint/black/silver) X on the last day of the Cyber Monday sale. Will have 2 codes for y’all later.

    • NexusMan

Never will understand this “Robin Hood,” mentality regarding codes. Stop hogging up codes, get what you need, and let other people get their own.

      • Ethan

        A) Some people won’t be able to get the code due to school/work constraints. In fact, I almost missed out last time because of finals.
        B) If nobody wants the code, I won’t be using it and it doesn’t affect Moto’s stock of the product.
        C) If you don’t want a code, by all means, continue complaining on an article comment section calling me selfish.

      • sirmeili

At least this time I don’t see a limit to the number of codes. I registered for mine about 8pm EST tonight. That being said, I agree with you. If you aren’t going to use the code personally, don’t get any. I can’t stand those people that grabbed a bunch then sold them on ebay.

  • justinisloco

Just out of curiosity, will the Unlocked version work on Verizon? I want to switch to AT&T Soon, but still on contract with Verizon. If the Unlocked would work for Verizon, like the iPhone does, then I’d buy the unlocked. Does anyone know for sure though?

    • Hothfox

Unlocked usually pertains to GSM carriers. Verizon’s CDMA network requires different bands whose radios aren’t present.

      • justinisloco

I figured that. what about, does the Verizon one work on AT&T?
Again, I have an iPhone currently, and its Verizon but it works on at&t 4g LTE, so if the Verizon Moto X works on AT&T, that would be perfect! I guess I just need to find out if the Verizon Moto X supports the AT&T 4g Bands

        • Hothfox

That one I am not sure about. Usually, Verizon phones can be used globally (like, if you go on vacation, you call Verizon and have the global calling/texting/data features turned on). My thought is that it would work, but you need to find out which bands the Verizon Moto X supports and compare it to which bands AT&T GSM/LTE works on. If the bands are there, it should work.

        • NexusMan

I haven’t actually tried it, but I’ve been told the Verizon version works on AT&T. But no version but the Verizon version works on Verizon.

  • GoBlue

Waiting for my big christmas cash influx to get one for $350. I was going to buy an Xbox one, but I think my 360 will be fine for another year… this will please me more :)

  • Hothfox

How do you get the 50% off accessories? Do you need to sign up for a code?

    • NexusMan

You have to buy another phone.

      • Hothfox

The code will work on just an accessory – no need to buy another phone to get it.

  • Kie

Can I get 50% off an accessory without buying a phone?

    • NexusMan

      Unfortunately, no.

      • C-Law

Aww man! That’s all I wanted. I already paid $699 for a dev edition. They owe me! lol

        • arthuruscg

But you still have to pay $10 shipping. Even for a $7 skip.

          • b00sted

Shipping for my wife’s dock was 4 bucks..

            Subtotal$19.97 Shipping$4.00 Estimated Tax$1.92

      • Hothfox

Yes, you can. I got the code in my email, have a dock in my cart, and it lets me apply the code all the way to the page that says “confirm”. I haven’t purchased it yet, though, because I am not sure if I actually want the dock.

  • Higher_Ground

Reading promo after promo for this phone really makes me want to get one, but until they offer “free upgrade on contract” I won’t be buying anything. Well that and no wooden backs yet :(

    • droidify

No wooden backs yet? Have you been under a rock?

      • Higher_Ground

I guess if you consider bamboo to be wood, but I haven’t seen a promo for them yet.

        • droidify

What else would you consider it. A grass back?

          • Higher_Ground

lol i guess so. It’s definitely wood-ish. Close enough but I’d really like to see what the others look like.

          • Matthew Dickinson

Well, since technically bamboo is a grass, not a tree, then yes.

          • droidify

Yep. That’s why they call bamboo flooring, grass flooring. It’s an exceptional product because you don’t even have to mow it.

        • NexusMan

Yes. They are considering Bamboo to be wood. Actually, the vast majority of the public does. The average person doesn’t walk into Home Depot asking, “where can I find your grass flooring?”

          • Higher_Ground

“Sir, Astroturf(TM) is located next to the vinyl and outdoor carpeting”

    • M3D1T8R

It is free on contract from Verizon right now, for their standard black or white version 16gb, with code VZWDEAL (well you still have to pay the $30 upgrade fee, but this is as close to free on contract as you’ll get). Enjoy!

      • Higher_Ground

I guess you still need an available upgrade, right?

I worded that comment funny – I don’t mind paying a subsidized price ($50-$100) but I’m not eligible to upgrade until the end of my contact in June. Even then no Moto maker is a deal breaker.

  • ZCormac

The code does not work when ordering an off contract 32GB phone with bamboo backing

    • droidify

*Note – The Bamboo Moto X is excluded from the promo.

  • AndrewScottRox

That beast looks like it glows in the dark.

  • BK

I keep getting errors at checkout with the T-Mo version

    • MM

      BK – Should work now

  • nick azzo

im thinking about selling my G2 and buying the moto x….any suggestions?

    • http://www.baldypal.com/ BaldyPal

Both great phones! tried them both personally. G2 screen size too big for me to handle one handed and VZW back buttons were bad (smaller than other models and hard to determine which i’m pushing without looking). but overall great phone. landed with a Moto X for the custom option and the X8, active display, and touchless control. love all the things this phones brings to the table.

      • http://www.baldypal.com/ BaldyPal

I now have one complaint about the Moto X and i just noticed it on my own phone. I bought a royal blue back and the edges and corners are starting to turn to a dark grey, pencil lead grey. i wonder if moto will fix/replace this under warranty?

        • Colin Zack

I hate you. I have a royal blue back too and I had not noticed it until you pointed this out.

          • http://www.baldypal.com/ BaldyPal

My bad, dude, My bad i’m sad about it too though. I chatted with them. they said they would honor it under 1 year warranty.

          • Colin Zack

Don’t you think its just going to happen again though? I don’t even notice mine really unless I look at it from an angle.

          • http://www.baldypal.com/ BaldyPal

yes. I don’t know if I’ll execute it. good to know they honor it though. didn’t want too but I might get a clear case instead.

          • Colin Zack

I kind of wonder if the case will help at all. Got a black back one for my brother, so I’m gonna keep an eye on his and see if his has any color oddities.

It is good to know they honor it though. Motorola has been really great from a customer service standpoint.

    • EdubE24

The G2 is a beast, I would think you were down grading going to the X.

    • Sean Walton

Get the X. People who say it’s a downgrade most likely have not used it. It’s a beast! If you want a larger display stick with the G2.

    • Rodeojones000

I own the G2. My wife owns the Moto X. Both are great, but I’d consider the X a slight step down. To each his own though.

    • GJV

Same boat. Have a G2, know it’s a specs beast but for some reason I just don’t love it. Also its ginormous and LG is notoriously slow with updates. Tough decision.

      • slider112

        G2 + Root + Stock Kit Kat 4.4.2 = Hyperbeast

The hardware/specs are second to none… once I ditched the LG skin there was no looking back…

        • GJV

Where can I get stock KitKat 4.4.2? To me, “stock” means one that LG released for this phone. I don’t want CM-based 4.4.2 ROMs as they never work quite right and you lose features.

          • slider112

Houstonn’s PA 4.0 build is essentially stock 4.4.2 right now, and it’s nothing short of amazing. I’ve been running it now for almost a month and it’s rock solid; I’ve had absolutely no issues at all. It has essentially turned my G2 into a Nexus device on steroids. If “stock” to you only means straight from LG then, unfortunately, you’ll be waiting a while… and even then it almost certainly won’t be pure android.

    • WCM3

ha. I bought a Moto X then the LG G2 when it was available in white. I still have both phones and have been switching back and forth recently. There are pros and cons with each. A couple things I like on the Moto X are nearly stock android (4.4), touchless controls, and the size is actually kind of nice. Some nice features on the G2 are battery life, camera quality, and sometimes the bigger screen. I’m going to use the Moto X until a stable CM11 rom comes out for the G2. LG’s software is sometimes too much.

    • C-Law

Do it! I got a vzw dev edition and as good as the phone has been, I havn’t even needed the unlocked bootloader and root, though I do have it. lol

      • adbFreedom

You might want to unlock it now before you get too much on the device so you wont have to transfer a lot back and forth if you decide you want to. At least the bootloader will be unlocked if you ever want to use it and do not have to wipe the device later. I haven’t done too much either, just rooted to unlock native tethering and use root browser/rom toolbox. I love this device! The battery life coming from a Gnex is mind blowing lol

    • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

Same here. Last time they had this deal I thought about trading it for the Moto X, but when I actually went to the store and put both side by side, the G2 is the clear winner. It’s screen is much larger, while the phone itself is not, not to mention it’s an LCD screen so it has superior color accuracy, white whites, and is extremely bright. With the Moto X you are getting a smaller screen, lower res/quality, worse camera, no wireless charging, worse battery life, etc.

Actually, typing that out made me re-think buying the X. I think I’ll keep my G2 until Moto releases a new device.

  • http://www.baldypal.com/ BaldyPal

And the Moto X car dock is no longer available. Not that it really ever was. It has been out of stock for almost 2 months now. But now, it’s not even listed on the site.

    Thanks, Moto!

    • MKader17

I gave up on it. I found a semi universal mount that would fit the Motorola Droid X which is actually 0.07 mm shorter 0.01 mm wider and 0.02 mm thinner! That kind of blew my mind. I think it will be able to fit my Moto X with its SUPCASE as well.

      • http://www.baldypal.com/ BaldyPal

Cool! if it does end of fitting, give me shout with a link. i’d be interested.

        • MKader17

It is a Griffin Window Mount. I found mine on Ebay for $15.

I got it in today. It fits VERY tight with my supcase on so I pulled off the rubber from the top of the mount and it still fits tight. However, my wife’s Moto X (no case) fits nice and snug (I believe it would fit just fine with the rubber as well). If my wife didn’t plan on using it too I would take off the little rubber pieces on the bottom corners as well.

There are a couple things I want to mention. You can’t use the camera or the headphone jack with it. This isn’t a problem for me as I use bluetooth in my vehicle. The second is there are two ways to mount it. The window mount is a very odd large clear “sticker”. It also comes with a dash mount that has a sticky back. We used that in the wife’s car on the dash and it looks like it will be great. I removed the sticky from the window mount and glued mine to a spot in my vehicle just like the dash mount.

I think I’ll be very happy in the long run. Hope it works out for you.

          -MK

      RAM Mount X-Grip, works great.

  • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

Too bad it doesn’t apply to the bamboo Moto X :/

  • Randall Wanamaker

Wish this worked for Republic Wireless’ version.

    • Guest

Wouldn’t that make theirs free? :P

  • b00sted

in for the 50% off accessories code for my wifes x.. hopefully I get one :/

  • newb

    These will work on T-Mobile?

    • http://droid-life.com/ Rthvk

I don’t think this promo will work. You can purchase an AT&T model off contract for $350 though and get it unlocked fairly simply

You’ll get LTE on T-Mobile and everything with that model.

      • GoBlue

You’ll always have dat AT&T logo on the back but no big…

    • nexusplay

Yes, on their form page it says $150 off the retail price of all major carriers.

  • http://droid-life.com/ Rthvk

Woah Kellen, up early it seems. Sweet deal you helped me score there (Verizon model)

  • moelsen8

this is almost starting to feel like a firesale. if they would have just priced this phone somewhere in the middle from the start, they might have sold a ton more.

    • br_hermon

To me, they’re just trying to create a lot of buzz during the hot shopping season. Buy one as a gift. Get one with your Christmas cash. Plus… There’s New Years, a new year, a new you, a new phone just as unique and as celebrated as you are. If that truly is their marketing plan, which it could very well be, I think it’s genius.

Plus, I just thought about it. Price isn’t everything. Sure they could mark down their phone to sell more, but consumers anticipate stuff like that. It’s normal. And people may question the quality of a product priced lower than all the other competitors… BUT when a company does something as different and newsworthy as offering pretty considerable savings (and being the only game in town that does it) it creates wave and draws attention. So you might say these sales actually generate more brand awareness around a product than “low prices.”

      • moelsen8

yeah, could be. but $350 is a far cry from $600 or $650 or wherever it started only a few months ago for off contract.

        • trixnkix637

That’s why it rarely pays to be an early adopter of any new tech (i.e. video games consoles, HP Chromebook 11, the Blunderbolt, etc..)

    • Tristan

Or they might have run in to supply problems with so many people buying, and then actual customers would be complaining. They’re the first company to make phones in the US, the first to allow this kind of customization (and ship in 4 days), the first have wood as an option – and people are complaining about the price or timing.

To me it seems like a good decesion to start with a higher price, and only offer motomaker for one carrier, to make sure that you can actually deliver on your commitments instead of trying to do everything (killer price, unmatched customization, all network, new materials) on your first new phone, and run the chance of screwing something up.

Especially since I only hear praise from people who, you know, actually bought the phone. And only hear complaints from people who might have, or maybe will, at somepoint, consider buying one.

      • moelsen8

I’ve bought 5 moto x’s so far. I love this phone. I have four different motorola.com order numbers that, if they increment naturally as orders come in, show that motorola hasn’t really sold too many of these. Couple tens of thousands up until the cyber monday thing. Or I could be wrong about how the order number is generated. Regardless, to me it feels like they’ve just been slowly dragging their feet over the course of a few months to get everything done. Maybe it’s the best they could do with the US and customization thing and all that, sure. But they should have come out guns blazing with everything they had, not slowly rolling out newer/different/more exciting/whatever options at increasingly lower prices month after month. People who have this phone love it, but it sucks if you bought it in August for almost double what it costs now.. and it sucks if you wanted a wood back.. that’s a long wait that still hasn’t been completely delivered in all forms initially promised.

        • J. Gilbertson

Why would you need 5 moto x’s?!?!

          • moelsen8

when i’m dropping $650 on a phone, i expect a perfect device. they’ve had quality control issues that seem to be well documented on xda and stuff. first one had a screen issue and dirt embedded in the white back. second one had a wicked vibration motor. bought a third off swappa thinking i’d rather have a cheap used one as long as i’m taking a chance on quality. then i bought a fourth DE when the price dropped $100 because i realized i hate AT&T bloatware, the bullsh*t network name in the status bar all the time, and all the pain in the ass hoops you have to jump through to get it and keep it rooted. that one also had a hair or some kind of strand embedded in the white back. then the cyber monday deal hit and i ordered one for $150 off that price and returned the 4th one.

ridiculous 2 and a half month journey through phones but i’m finally on one i can call my own, with no dirt on the back, or screen issues, and at $250 cheaper than the original. i’ve come to terms that the vibration motor in all of these are all too rattley.

          • nexusplay

            Wow. That’s quite a journey.

They are going to release a new one every year or so, why did they have to go crazy on this one? They are doing a lot of new experimental things, they are ramping their operations up quickly.

          • Dave

A Moto tech was at our work fixing our in vehicle computers and said there will be another flagship device late Q1 or real early Q2.

          • trixnkix637

Sounds like to me no matter what unless there wasn’t a single solitary issue anywhere, you would’ve never been happy either way.

          • moelsen8

it became nitpicking, yes. but for that much money i feel like i’m allowed to nitpick on defects, however tiny.

          • guest99

I had a similar ordeal with my Galaxy Nexus I bought on contract with Verizon. First one, it wouldn’t hold a charge for more than maybe 2 hours of no usage, on wi-fi. Exchanged in store for a new one. Got home, noticed a gap between the bezel and plastic surround. Took it to a VZW store near my house, and the guy said I couldn’t exchange because it was not defective…apparently defective to him only means usability. I took it back to the other store (near my work), and exchanged for another new one in store. After a couple months, the charging port got loose, and would only charge if gingerly plugged in. I tried different cables and power adapters, no go. Took that in to yet another VZW store (I had moved) and they had to mail me a refurb. I’ve been on the refurb since, and have been happy with it, with no other problems (well, I cracked the glass, but that’s my own dumb fault, easy replacement though).

          • moelsen8

yeah i was getting pretty worried about my gnex usb port near the end too. very wiggly.

          • trixnkix637

            You’ve got a fair point.

          • michael arazan

For $700 you could by a medium priced laptop, or decent desktop pc. I understand the pricing and that a lot of people don’t value the price of a dollar sometimes. If the moto x was priced at $450-350 to begin with, it would of been phone of the year, some sites already call it the phone of the year like AC.

          • bd1212

Completely agree. I have the exact same expectations as you when dropping $650 on a phone. It’s the reason why I’ve returned the G2, Note 3, and iPhone 5s. Moto X has been the only one that has been closest to a perfect device (surprisingly, it’s on par with the iPhone 5s… it just had a far worse battery life than the Moto X). And yeah, the vibration motor in this thing is way, way to rattley.

          • jimbob

A better question is – why only 5, not 10?

          • moelsen8

because i’m happy with the one i have, and moto’s not knocking any more money off the price within the return period of this one :)

        • jimbob

Get everything you are saying, but paying high when buying a device early after release, and then complaining when the price drops is kinda silly. Moto is probably trying to dump any remaining inventory for the holidays because I am sure a large % of phone sales happen this time of year. Then, in January, a bunch of new phones get announced and people wait to buy until the new ones are released. So if you are Moto, why get stuck with all that stock at the end of year. And, lots of times options get added later. Again, being the first (or early) to buy a product is often not a good deal. High price, less features, more bugs. But, also get to show it off.

          • moelsen8

true, but i’d say that by the time the DE came out, the phone was on the market for like 2 months. and i wasn’t necessarily complaining about the price drops.. but i was within the return period of each, so i took advantage of it. more so saying these drops are very unusual for off contract pricing (which is probably a really good thing and that which they’re going for, try and shake things up a little), so you could look at them and wonder why they’re doing it. most people don’t buy off contract.

        • Khary Anderson

I’m one of the people who bought it the first weekend it was with Verizon. $150 down the drain

      • http://twitter.com/tarund TarunD

They’re assembled in the U.S., not made. It’s a fact.

        • GoBlue

So is every other product made in recent years. I’m not sure anything is 100% US made any more

        • Tristan

Like GoBlue says, almost nothing is 100% from anywhere anymore. There are tons and tons of products that are “made” in the US and then “assembled” in another country and then sold in the US as “Made in” China/Japan/Vietnam/Mexico etc. Everything from memory sticks to automobiles.

What’s important, and the reason we see so many “Made in” labels on everything is where the last step happens, it’s just a fact that in a world where hundreds of people from dozens of companies from dozens of countries contribute to making something that “Made in” means “Assembled in.” The last step is most important because that’s where most of the markup (and therefore profit) happens, where tarrifs and taxes are enacted (or the most of them), and it’s also where the total impact of the cost of labor is usually the highest. All of that means that if you want to see where the bulk of the money ends up, check to see where the last step in the supply chain is.

    • Fattie McDoogles

      So true!

    • athom07

This isn’t a firesale. Motorola has been selling the X at $350 to carriers since day one. They are having holiday sales where they are selling it AT COST directly to the consumer. A firesale is a heavily discounted product (but there is no actual discount here – the carriers are letting them sell the phone at cost).

      • trixnkix637

^ this. I wish more people understood, instead of assuming their money or their status as customer entitles them to be elitist. I’m perfectly happy with what Moto has been doing since Google acquired them.

      • moelsen8

i was being kind of sarcastic. i know what a firesale is.

    • dennis laska

The Moto X is a decent phone for $350. I just returned mine though, meh.

  • MM

$349 for all carriers not just att and sprint. GSM unlocked and Verizon included.

        • jimbob

18? Wife and I just had our first 5 months ago, and I am planning on at least 22, maybe 25. With college and maybe grad school, who knows. Plus, I don’t know if it ever stops. My mom still loses sleep when I am traveling, and I am 32!

Kellex is one hot author , woof

Ight man thats weird. Everyone knows working at Droid-life is Mon-Fri 9-5 job lol.

      • Ryan N

Do you have to purchase a moto x to qualify for the accessory deal?

  • faganm24

Can you just get the accessory deal?

    • Christopher Brown

I was wondering this as well.

      • MK17

I tried adding a chromecast, bluetooth headset and moto x dock and it said i did not enter a valid code when I entered todayshow50

        • GoBlue

Um I think you need to sign up through the discount website and use the code they email you…

    • middlehead

Hopefully, because I’m leaning towards getting the newly dropped MAXX. The extra $50 for double the battery is worth it, it’d definitely help if I can get cheapass accessories for it here.

  • Tenaj

This phone must be selling tragically cuz everybody is trying to get rid of units

    • Ej McCarty

maybe they’re just trying to get rid of their stock so they can announce the moto x 2….per sarge

EDIT: per sarge TM… whew that was a close one. Almost got sued by Bionic, I mean godzilla for copyright infringment

    • MistaButters

Remember the rumors about how much Google was giving Moto for advertising. Whats better advertising that getting a million phones out there that you break even on?
