New Samsung Tizen 2.1 Screenshots Leak, Still Looks Very TouchWiz-ish

Samsung has been hard at work on its Android fork, which has always gone by the name Tizen. Devices launching with this Android-based OS should hit the market sometime in 2014 according to various rumors, and today we are getting another look at what we can expect from the OS. If you are familiar with Samsung’s TouchWiz, then none of these startling images will surprise you.

As you can see, it’s essentially TouchWiz – very white backgrounds and very colorful foregrounds. It appears Samsung has been testing Tizen with a lot of circle icons, which is interesting. Definitely a bit removed from previous squared icons they have opted for in the past on their current OS skins. On top of that, many of these applications, such as a calendar and calculator look a lot like their TouchWiz counterparts, with only the color scheme being changed. If you ask us, we aren’t the biggest fans, but that shouldn’t be a surprise.

It’s definitely a clean looking OS, although that notification pulldown looks extremely cluttered. What do you think?

Apple can’t wait to sue them again

  • TheBeeNet

All this hype over Tizen and Samsung is so overrated. I am quite sure the competition is hopefully that Samsung will leave Android. Wishful thinking though. Tizen is so not ready for primetime. Samsung would literally be committing suicide if the left Android completely for Tizen.

  • Epic Tea

Touchwiz is meh, but I actually think this looks better than the current touchwiz, it similar but also different.

  • Korean UI design <<<

  • Dominick_7

Yuck looks really girly. This can’t be real.

  • Justin Strickland

Uh…DROID Life… You should probably look over theses “leaks” more carefully. The raunchy typos on the interface are a pretty big give-away that this is not legit content. In all honesty, you should probably pull the article and say you’re sorry.

  • cleffy

Why is account mispelled? Tizen not ready for prime time! “Accocunt” “Acco-cunt”…..just sounds wrong too

  • Allan

Holy mother of God. Is this what it’s going to look like?

And we thought Touchwiz was bad. I guess it’s time to embrace touchwiz before it’s gone, because it looks like Samsung needs to hire better designers. This is so bad the colors are burning retinas.

“Clean-looking OS”? Clean-looking my ass. I think Samsung has the common sense not to adopt this piece of trash.

  • Kree Terry

Kill it, KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!

  • Aaron Saellam

“Driving Mode Test Test” <– not nearly as funny as the rest of the errors, but one none the less. Apple will sue them for sure now.

  • cornerofthemoon

Looks like a mishmash of Android and webOS

  • ARP

Tizen isn’t an Android fork, though it is based on Linux.

  • ConCal

  • Austin_tacious

Touchwiz is ugly and I hate my GS4 for it; but this– this is so much worse.

  • trixnkix637

I like the first pic, the rest is compiled compacted garbage.

  • WickedToby741

I wouldn’t really call Tizen an Android fork. Just because it can run Android apps doesn’t make it a fork. That’s like calling BB10 an Android fork. Tizen was born of Bada (Samsung’s old proprietary OS) and MeeGo (itself a combination of Intel’s Moblin and Nokia’s Maemo). To my knowledge, it’s not actually born of Android code (like Amazon’s Fire OS is) except for the Dalvik runtime.

  • This looks pretty good.. for Samsung.

  • Ray

It looks so… horrible. Looks at the KitKat’s UI on my N5 now and everything looks so clean and crisp. This just looks childish.

  • PhillipCun

Samsung can’t even design apps with decent UX. How are they going to design a complete OS??

  • Cody Revels

    How about……F***ing ugly??!

  • The design looks horrible. It has some kind of old-y world-y look to it, infact after looking at it for a little bit more, it carry’s some of the awful design language of the Facebook app on Android. Look at the gallery and those blue check-boxes, seem familiar? What about those oval shapes used for text, yes I have also seen that for the new posts notification from within the Facebook app. As for the blogpost itself, Tizen is NOT a fork of android. It’s an OS build from the ground up in collaboration with the Linux foundation and Intel.

  • Droon

I don’t understand why they do this. Why fork Android, then make a new OS that looks significantly worse? Does Tizen add any functionality that is critically missing from Android? Is it some kind of licensing issue? I just don’t get it.

I am not saying this looks bad (I will withhold my opinion), but damn, stock Android looks so much better.

  • NexusMan

  • Scott Webber

What a joke. If they are going to try to kill Android, at least replace it with something designed as well.

  • NexusMan

  • jimbob

How do you say abomination in Korean?

  • MikeSaver

    Fudge Samsung

  • Jarred Sutherland

In all seriousness, isn’t Samsung going to get reamed by Google if they release a fork of Android? I am pretty sure that the rules Google sets up with OEMs that produce Android handsets is “NO FORKS OR YOU GET THE GOOGLE BANHAMMER!”? In fact I am sure of it. If they release a product with an Android fork they lose access to the Google Play Store and all APIs.

    • NexusMan

It is not Android. It’s a competing OS.

      • Jarred Sutherland

Gotcha. Was a bit confused since the article says it is a fork, but it is in fact, not a fork.

  • Steve B

It’s confirmed, still looks like complete garbage after all these months.

  • I predict that this will kill Samsung’s huge lead in the Android game. Just one guy’s two cents.

  • Jason Brown

looks somewhat better than what they currently have with touchwiz. or it might be the colors that i like

  • Dave12308

Except Tizen isn’t Samsung’s forked Android build. It’s an open-source standards-based mobile Linux platform with roots in Samsung’s old Bada OS. It actually falls under the Linux Foundation, and includes companies like Samsung and Intel and many more.

  • Mike Hilal

    Holo-ish TW?

  • T_Dizzle

Debuting in 2014 on the Galaxy S5 😉

  • Walk with me Jonnie

You should have googled Tizen before writing this article. Tizen is based on Meego, with Samsungs own Bada OS code merged into it later on.

    • NathanDomier

This. Especially important distinction in terms of app compatibility and the like.

    • Macalee Harlis Jr.

exactly. I was wondering, what the heck do they mean android based??? lol

  • willl03

What’s up with the age of empire 1 look Samsung

  • Big_EZ

The reason this is bad is because currently the main thing wrong with Samsung’s phones is Samsung’s software. If Samsung wants to increase sales, and not see a decline soon then they need to drop touchwiz, don’t mess with the core of the core of stock Android and just add a few of their features (multi-window) and they’ll enjoy even more success than they do now.

    • NexusMan

      This isn’t Android. Or Touchwhiz.

      • Big_EZ

I know, but they are the problem with their version of Android, what makes you think their own OS would be better?

        • NexusMan

          I don’t. I agree with you.

    • hkklife

I agree 100% with what you are saying but two things:

      A. It’ll never happen

      B. The article above has nothing to do with Samsung’s Touchwiz skin atop Android, other than possibly being a sneak preview of what we could expect to see UI-wise from a Touchwiz revamp next year to coincide with Android 5.x.

      • Big_EZ

I know the article isn’t about touchwiz or Android, but I’m sure that their OS will be as bad as their touchwiz skin.

  • Cael

The Korean Kristen Stewart looks like she can act football fields better than the American one. Is the Korean Kristen Stewart still dating Korean Robert Pattinson?

    • It’s like being in an alternate reality.

  • MotoXYZ

If their end game was to make the pull down shade as confusing and ocd nightmare inducing as possible, then they hit a home run

  • WarRaven

    Large Pass on that, thanks.

  • sr_erick

A notification shade should be for notifications, not for 10,000 widgets and other crap to take up the entire shade. This is one of the reasons I’ve hated touchwiz phones, the constant clutter and having the notification shade 50% consumed by extra crap.

    • aye_winchell

i just got the g2 and the first thing i did was root and install xposed and gravity box as removed those things. I agree with you 100%, i really like having 2 seperate pull downs on stock android, one for notification and one for toggles, it annoyed me to no end to have my notification start halfway down the screen.

  • JP

It’s going to be interesting to see if Google can get Motorola off the ground to compete with Samsung when they (Samsung) dumps android.

    • hkklife

I think it COULD be done (and a lot more easily than many expect) but Google isn’t going to have the patience or desire to pump more $ into Moto. Look how good (and lightweight) Moto’s not-Blur skin was already by the time it hit Jellybean on the pre-X devices. But hardware and marketing are still what moves units and Moto is lagging badly in that regard. Still no decent cameras, still no 1080P screens and still no phablets or tablets.

  • Wait, Tizen is an Android fork? I thought it was a little more of its own entity than that.

Doesn’t that knock Samsung out of the Open Handset Alliance? Isn’t the agreement that an OEM can’t get official Google Play support and other things from Google if they sell a device with an Android fork?

    • Detonation

Samsung has their Samsung Hub nonsense that I’m sure they’d be fine making people use instead of Google Play

      • Except Google Play isn’t just Play Store. It’s the Google Play Services Framework, which all of the apps rely on now. All the mapping and location services, push notification services, account services, backup services, and a ton more. Not to mention things like Google Now. A lot of what makes Android Android is wrapped up in those services, and all those go bye-bye. The amount of effort Amazon’s had to make to replace most of those for Kindle is huge, and expensive. And it requires app developers to redevelop their apps around it. And it doesn’t matter what Samsung’s happy to make their users use: will their users be happy to use it?

    • RoboBonobo

It’s not an Android fork. It’s completely separate and autonomous from Google. It’s only loosely related to Android, in that they’re both based on Linux.

  • anna willoughby

    Wow, that is…really ugly.

  • Cesar

That notification shade looks terrible. I love being able to swipe away my notifications. Getting rid of that functionality is an awful idea.

  • Joshua Bailey

    Fackwors Accocunt

  • fauxshizzl

I want to try the driving mode test test.

  • coolsilver

    It’s ugly.

  • Hey Tim, Tizen isn’t a fork of Android.

  • hahaha

    Download finished… “Beautiful Woman.jpg”

  • zapote21

I think the word “account” is mis spelled…

  • KingofPing

This is what “ick” aspires to be when it grows up….

  • Krzysztof Bryk

it is tizen 2.1 current is 2.2.1 and in feb we will see 3.0
sammobile snitching yestarday news from my blog at it’s finest ;]

  • Dan Hines

beautifulwoman.jpg was the main selling point of me getting tizen. I don’t even know what a tizen is but it comes with beautifulwoman.jpg. So I’m sold.

  • mustbepbs

They need some help with their calculator app, because according to my calculations with the same exact numbers, that comes out to 4954.

Unless there was input before that.

  • OneForTheGoodDays

Everything about this makes me want to vomit. Everything.

That gallery. That dialer screen. etc. barf barf etc.

  • Mando7

Did not know Kristen Stewart turned asian (Contacts app)… nor did I know that Michael Jackson was making calls from the afterlife (Notifications)… lol

  • nerds

    “application manageer”

  • steve30x

so iS Samsung doing something like Apple their own thing there own skin their own apps their way or the highway?

    • Adrynalyne

After reading that a few times…

Probably. Too bad it will flop.

    • StuckOnVerizonForever

What is that supposed to say?

  • Tony Byatt
  • Ubi2447

The Notifications Tray and Contacts do look very cluttered. :S

  • Damon C. Walden

Honestly the color scheme and especially the screen shot on the right in the first grouping looks an awful lot like my old Omnia i910… nostalgic at best but the memories are not that fond

    • Adrynalyne

Memories…I used to dev for that device…still have a few roms on 4shared that weren’t deleted by CnDs 😉

      • Damon C. Walden

Lol, I remember your ROMs all too well good sir. I’ve used them on most all my devices at one time or another. I somehow recall you being slightly more jovial in days past 😉

        • Adrynalyne

I won’t lie….I was one helluva nice guy Omnia days.

The android community made me shrewd and cruel. I now spend my evenings sharpening knives, and kicking puppies.

I still have my i910, by the way 😀

          • Damon C. Walden

      • KingofPing

        One word:

        • Adrynalyne

          It wasn’t that bad…

Ahh, who am I kidding. Terrible.

          • KingofPing

Mine’s still going as my alarm clock. It’s actually running kitkat.

Open more than two apps and it turns to crap, but other than that…

            …yeah, it’s terrible.

          • Adrynalyne

I traded mine to jt1134 for his Thunderbolt.

Then I had two, and he had two Fascinates. Looking back, it wasn’t a very smart trade,,,

          • KingofPing

            Ouch. You got burned. :p

Was that before or after he started pumping out AOSP for it?

(Fascinate was my first Android phone. Ever. …and my introduction to AOSP/CM addiction.)

          • Adrynalyne

            About the same time.

          • KingofPing

So does it still hurt from all the ‘kicking yourself’?

Just playin’. Gotta be a smart ass because I couldn’t come close to the talent that came out of that group of folks even if I suddenly gained, like…talents n’ stuff.

          • Adrynalyne

Back then, I thought I was the winner there.

Of course, I’ve also owned an i910, and a blackberry Tour after that…

Could be I am just an idiot.

          • KingofPing

            Well that ain’t it…

  • TheDave1022

Why show the calendar with entries from November 2012?

  • Mordecaidrake

This makes me sad, Samsung makes great devices but if they really push this without Google Services, they’ve lost me as a customer.

  • Sean Walton

I call FAKE. Look at all the spelling errors. Reflesh? Driving mode test test? If you actually go through all the photos on Sam Mobile you will see many and I mean many more spelling errors.

    • Adrynalyne

Do you know how many spelling errors were corrected with the GS1 series via OTA?

      Like 3 or 4.

      • Sean Walton

        hmmmm…… i didn’t know that.

        • Adrynalyne

          HTC has done it too.

So I am not faulting Samsung, but alpha software is bound to be worse.

  • Patrick Crumpler

The article photos look ok. The dark theme looks clean. The rest is ratchet.

  • John Moore

    Looks alright.
That being said, I’ll stick with non-forked, stock Android, thanks.

  • You couldn’t pay me to use a device with samsung software on it.

    • Adrynalyne

      Lies. Anyone can be bought.

  • JT

    That’s just downright ugly

  • SadderdaySteve

    Oh God, that looks terrible

  • Shane Redman

    • MultiKdizzle

This looks like an interface from 2008.
Touchwiz was always the first thing I tried getting rid of, now they are designing an OS around this childish design? Yeah this will sell. At least there is an amazing app selection at this late point in the game! Oh wait.

Success has gotten to their head. Even the Galaxy S5 will be shaped like a feminine pebble, like the last four phones.

  • Adrynalyne

    A bit…crowded.

  • LoganLopez

When you have 1/3 of the notification panel covered with stuff, it is kind of pointless to have it. Should be simple. I do like the shortcuts at the top and wish google would do that, but something smaller would be nice.

    • subiedude85

I wish Google would make the shortcuts native too but in the mean time I use Notification Toggle. Minimal, clean, and no root needed.

      • LoganLopez

Guessing the GPS is just a shortcut. Thanks for this though. Just installed it and love it.

  • Boblank84

all those notification in the center look awful. i guess there would have to be a even number of notifications for it to be centered.

  • Mario Williams

What the bloody hell is a “accocunt”?

    • StuckOnVerizonForever

heard it’s a revolutionary thing, you know, those things that Samsung does

    • BRIVERS73

    • merle

A place a lady stores her bitcoins?

    • Adam

I think the better question is what the “reflesh” button does…

      • Adrynalyne

        It sounds rather violent…

      • Cael

        They’re trolling Sony obviously…

      • calculatorwatch

I could use one of those, I’ve got some scars that I’d really like to replace with new flesh.

        • michael arazan

Guess samsung forgot to integrate auto-errect

    • JBartcaps

      Don’t forget the “Application manageer”

  • It does look cartoonish, but for most users they’d rather see this bright and cheerful UI over Google’s dark and dreary default colors.

    • Justin Foster

    • Adrynalyne

I for one don’t want rainbows shooting out of my phone 😉

      • KingofPing

Darn straight. The only place rainbows should be shooting out of is unicorn’s asses.

      • Like IOS7? lol

    • Christian

I agree that the colors might be more likeable, but I think it’s strange that Samsung (and other manufacturers that skin Android) are sticking with such 3-dimensional, bubbly UIs when the modern trend seems to be heading towards flatter interfaces (which users seem to like better).

      • As usual Samsung doesn’t have a consistent UI. As you said, many aspects are 3D-like while they have the more 2D and flat tiles in the notification shade

    • j

The calculator and calendar apps take me back to the first time I loaded the Android SDK and played with the emulator leading up to the OG Droid release. Basically everything looks like what Android developers in 2009 thought Android would look like in 2014 😀

  • Paul

    Beautiful Woman.jpg… creepy.

  • TheDave1022

Samsung needs to stick to hardware. Looks pretty ugly

    • nosedive94

I’m not sure if you’ve been paying attention, but their hardware is uglier.

      • Justin Strickland

Not sure if either of you are paying attention. These shots are fakes.

  • thomson

    Ah, beautiful woman.jpg. Those rascals!

  • T S

    yep. still looks cartoonish.

    • Justin Foster

      I like an anime-ish,cartoonish look.

      • Samvelavich

watch out buddy, you’re not allowed to state your opinions here.

        • I know right, I think this looks fine, especially for SAMSUNG out of all OEMs… and in come the hate flame for not having the same thoughts as the general tech “community”.

          • Justin Foster

Yea, it’s refreshing from what we’re accustomed to, but majority rules in aMErica

        • Justin Foster

          Rofl, I see.
