Motorola Contextual Services Now Being Updated on Google Play for Moto X and New DROIDs

motorola logo

The latest app for Motorola’s Moto X and new DROID line (ULTRA, MAXX, and Mini) to hit Google Play is called “Motorola Contextual Services,” an app that is used to help keep other Motorola apps updated. This app in particular provides “core” functionality for the drive, meeting, and sleep detection pieces of Motorola Assist and Touchless Control. In other words, there aren’t any front-facing activities or features for you to play with as you update this app, but it does help out with some of Motorola’s new app collection.

For example while using Assist or Touchless Control after this update, you’ll now receive support for Bluetooth driving detection.

Here is the description of the app from Motorola:

Motorola Contextual Services helps in keeping your Motorola applications updated using the Google Play Store. This component provides core functionality to features such as drive, meeting and sleeping detection for applications like Motorola Assist and Motorola Touchless Control.

Note: Motorola Assist and Motorola Touchless Control may not work if you uninstall Motorola Contextual Services.

If you own a Moto X or new DROID device, you should have an update for Contextual Services waiting for you on Google Play.

It sounds like Moto is pulling as much as it can out of the OS to allow them to buy pass the carriers.

  • Steven Ortiz

Says it’s incompatible with my device. I have a droid Razer m.

    • acontreras426

Only compatible with the new Droid family (Ultra, Maxx and Mini). This won’t work with the Droid Razr family of phones.

  • Sporttster

So instead of adding bloat on their updates, you dl it from the app store….got it…

    • BlackMaGiC1o0

Do you even have any idea what you’re about?

  • Razma

i just want it to turn on my damn bluetooth when i start driving

  • iNomNomAwesome

And yet, the BlueTooth music on my Moto X is still screwed up from the 4.4 update. I know I keep complaining about it, but until they fix it, I don’t know what to do.

    • Mathayus_Beck

Did you call Motorola, my co worker called them and they had her go through steps and now it works flawlessly.

I’m seriously thinking of using the Edge program and picking up an X to replace my RAZR Maxx. Obviously lots of positive comments here. I’m also considering the Note 3, but just not sure I can carry around a phone that big although I now those that have it rave about it. The most common complaint I’ve seen in reading reviews on the X is call quality. Is that still a common issue, or has that been fixed? Reportedly, these things can be used to make something called phone calls too… ;)

    • triumphtriple

I haven’t had any issues with call quality myself.
The main reason I got it was the quick updates and smaller form factor.

    • faganm24

Never had any issues with call quality. Great phone.

  • Wolfpack93

Fingers crossed that the continued separation of carrier-independent and carrier-specific code coupled with a switchover to voLTE will allow for the reality of a future Nexus device on Verizon that doesn’t allow Big Red to dictate the rollout of updates.

  • sc0rch3d

Assist has been a much more useful app then I first speculated especially when at work and on back to back to back conference calls. My wife loves the sleep mode b/c my international team sends emails at all kinds of effin hours.

  • John Burke

    Moto G also

  • MichaelFranz

Now bring on kit Kat for droid maxx…any day now

    • LiterofCola

      This!

  • a) youth.in.asia

Bluetooth support you say? Paired with something like the Motorola Elite Sliver I/II you should have ~300 feet that you can be away from your phone and have it still be able to use touchless controls

  • droidrazredge

I was wondeing what this update was all about. It just auto-updated Motorola Contextual Services in the app store while I was browsing a text message. I was going to inform Droid-life about it, but I thought it was just something minor that was being updated like Google Play Services. I did not know it was something this big.

  • Robert Macri

This was already in Google play… The update is new though.

    • sc0rch3d

it was forced to my phone. i thought that was a bit strange.

  • chaoslimits

Everyone I show this phone to is blown away and/or jealous. Godspeed Moto!

    • Mike Cook

Thx for saying this I just picked it up with the $150 code and have been wondering if it was really worth it or not (still waiting for it to arrive). This post makes me feel better.

      • trixnkix637

Easily the best I’ve owned (Blackberry RIM Pearl, OG Droid, Droid X, Galaxy S3, G-Nex). I too was worried, but Moto silenced them for me. Congrats on using your code!

        • Mike Cook

Sweet my phone history is almost identical! Thank you,

I ordered mine last week and got it in the mail and I must say, the phone is amazing! I haven’t gotten the chance to really play with it as a daily driver (gotta wait til Christmas for that) but just testing it out the thing flies! I logged into my account and it was installing updates while I was running around the device setting various accounts up with zero lag! That’s something my N7 and Droid Razr can’t even begin to do!

      • droidrazredge

I ordered mine during the cyber Monday deal with the 150$ code. I also helped my friend make a decision of getting one coming from an IPhone. This device is truly amazing. I learn more unique features about this device every day. I have yet to see it lag or stutter in performance. I really enjoy the touchless controls with the addition of find my phone in case you misplace it. People really get amazed at the touch-less control features of the device. Active display is nice because I get to always check who’s texting me and what emails that I am getting without the need to unlock the phone and see notification while just looking at my phone. .The big attention grabber when I show people the phone is how I can twist to activate the camera from the locked screen. As far as battery life I am able to get 1 day 4 hours and 26 mins of battery life. I barely was able to get that on my Droid Razr Maxx (3300 mAh battery). This is easily the best device that I have owned ( Blackberry Curve 8350, Droid X, Droid Razr Maxx,). I have even showed my girfiend that phone, she was skeptical about it at first. Now she’s a beleiver and really wants the phone. She can’t wait to trade in her Galaxy S3 for the Moto X in January. She has lost interesting in the way Samsung has handled their phones and can’t wait to jump ship to Motorola. Hopefully that helps you out.

        • Haroon Dar

At this point u should tell her to wait for x2

          • droidrazredge

Are you referring to the Moto Xplay ? I see your point, I brought it up before to her before, but I don’t think she wants a phone that size. I think it’s rumored to be 6.3”. I wish I could have waited, but seeing as that 150$ off was to good to pass up, I didn’t want to risk being stuck with my Droid Razr Maxx and not being up to upgrade without losing my unlimited data.

          • Haroon Dar

Meant the moto x2 (if she can wait that long i mean it is 6 month wait at least)not the xplay personally I think that the note line hits the sweet spot but on a budget its hard to say which is a good phone honestly u either have the nexus or the moto x for this price point u can’t go wrong with either one but if ur girl Can wait there r more wood options coming up for moto x

          • droidrazredge

Oh, yeah I thought you were referring to the Moto Xplay, That’s a good point about the Moto X2, She really hated her S3 up until they updated it today to 4.3. Now she likes it a lot. They added some cool S4 features to it. Maybe that will hold her till the X2. She does think the 99$ on contract price is nice though. She’s on the fence now between keeping the S3 or going for an IPhone 5C or Moto X.

woah! the droid razr maxx doesn’t/didn’t have great battery life? thats so hard to believe. everyone (reviews) always raved about how great the battery life was. i guess everything is not as it seems. good to know. every time my gnex dies on me on a few short hrs of use, i always wish that i had a phone with a battery that big. i guess i havent missed out on much.

          • droidrazredge

Well when the phone debuted with 2.3, gingerbread, the phone had amazing battery life. I use to get 2 days 16 hours out of the Droid Razr Maxx OG. This stayed this way until 2.3.4. It was insane how long I could go on one charge. It would be equivilent to the Droid Razr Maxx HD with 4.1.2. After they updated it to 4.0, Icecream Sandwich, that’s when the battery life went downhill and the problems started to plague the Droid Razr Maxx. Even being updated to 4.0.4 didn’t seem to help much. I would then get about half of that so about a day and 8 hours if I was lucky. Then with 4.1 when the battery life was supposed to be improved and the device performance should have been improved with project butter. Everyone thought the battery life would go up as well, but it didn’t. I would be lucky if I got 12 hours on a good day. The most I would most likely get would be 15 hours. They recenlty updated the Droid Razr Maxx to 4.1.2 which was confirmed to be the last major update according to Motorola, but even that did not fix the battery performance. It was mainly to address device issues. I still wonder what the device would be like if Motorola decided to update it to 4.2 or even 4.3 with TRIMM. It was a good device that just didn’t play with with updates past gingerbread.

oh wow. how time flies. i completely forgot that phone shipped with gb. no wonder it ended up being awful. im glad you’re enjoying the moto x. i might have to make the jump sometime soon.

        • Mike Cook

          Awesome thank you very much!

      • NexusMan

I did the same. And it’s worth every bit.

      • JoshGroff

I ordered mine Friday and got it Tuesday, it is pretty awesome. Camera is meh, as are most Motorola phone cameras, but the hands free features are pretty awesome.

    • calculatorwatch

My girlfriend is a stalwart dumb-phone user who has never really had any interest in smartphones. I told her about how I wanted a Moto X and showed her all the colors at best buy and now she wants one too because it’s “cute”.

  • Booyah

I might hold off before updating this. Folks are reporting that the update is breaking the Assist driving features. Apparently, Moto is on it.

Damn I just updated and then just read this comment =( hopefully i have no issues.

      • brkshr

Should be able to uninstall updates through settings>apps

    • Daniel Maginnis

Been waiting on the soak test. Maybe its gonna get delayed cuz of this. I assume this would be baked in to whatever that update is.

  • ApplesNAndroids

I’d call Motorola butter because they’re on a roll!

    • a) youth.in.asia

Stick a fork in Apple, cause they’re done!

      • Tyler

Their logo is browning up quite nicely due to that bite taken out of it.

  • Radgatt

I saw this in the PlayStore and didn’t think much of it. But it seems like something that will only help my phone out in the long run. Great job Moto!
