Year in Review Video: Google Takes Us Through the Journey That was 2013

google year in review 2013

From Nelson Mandela’s passing to the Boston Marathon tragedy to Bat Kid to 1.7million versions of the Harlem Shake, Google shows us the year in review through video based on the top trending searches. If you have never seen one of these videos before, this would be a good one to start with. Google is calling it their “most global Zeitgeist to date.”

In case you were curious, here are the top 10 global trending searches from 2013:

  1. Nelson Mandela
  2. Paul Walker
  3. iPhone 5s
  4. Cory Monteith
  5. Harlem Shake
  6. Boston Marathon
  7. Royal Baby
  8. Samsung Galaxy s4
  9. PlayStation 4
  10. North Korea

And now, on to the video.

Margaret Thatcher, Paul Walker, Nelson Mandella… one of these things just doesn’t belong. No offense to the Walker family, but not year in review worthy in my opinion.

  • dreadnatty08

Love that Malala Yousafzai was in the video. She’s such an inspiration! Wish she won the Nobel Peace prize though…

  • alex drum

Anyone else feel like they want to actually do something fresh, new, and exciting with their life after watching this video?

  • feztheforeigner

I stopped the video as soon as I heard Obama’s voice.

    • Droidzilla

I hate to say it, but Google’s liberal bias made for a very boring video. There were a ton of important things that went on, but they wouldn’t fit Google’s political agenda. That said, Google does stand up for freedom more than all the other tech giants, so I give them a pass on their general political lameness.

  • webharsh

Anyone have link to the video of the title picture in post the on with bicycle?

    Aww yeah iPhone 5s!

    Bring the downvotes! Lol

Why isn’t the Moto X on there?

    • AbbyZFresh

      It only sold 500k.

      • Adrynalyne

        Hi!

This is not 3rd quarter 2013 anymore and therefore your numbers don’t mean much.

        Thank you, please come again!

  • StuckOnVerizonForever

Still can’t believe Paul Walker. He was a great role model

    • Chris

right….. and thats what killed him…. right?

      • Adrynalyne

        No.

      • StuckOnVerizonForever

If youre inferring street racing, youre wrong. He didnt condone street racing either. He started multiple charities and helped a lot of people. Maybe read an article or two.

      • TopXKiller

You could say he was going.. Fast and Furious

        • Adrynalyne

Or you could say he was a passenger.

          • StuckOnVerizonForever

Its amazing how many people say Paul was at fault, or blame him. Two guys going out to address a problem obviously werent out to race. The Porsche Carerra GT is also a very dangerous car.

          • Adrynalyne

Clearly one of those who thinks he was at fault also downvoted my comment.

          • Adam Elghor

So many people have died from that car….

        • Col_Angus

So 45mph and hydroplaning qualifies as fast and furious these days?

          • Adrynalyne

Terrible term used by the press.

Hydroplane requires water….hence the hydro part of the word.

  • Chris

    #1 & 2 were within the last week…

    • Chris

guess the idiot who donvoted me didn’t watch the news…..

      • Justin W

Doesn’t mean they didn’t get searched the most.

Edit: Also, some of those could have happened prior to their respective passings, as both were very popular role models/inspiration for lots of things they had accomplished.

Meh, to each his own…This seems more exclusively pop culture. The Google Zeitgeist covers all the top events/moments of the year, or at least it is suppose to…

  • Tony Byatt

A pretty disappointing recap of 2013 by Google…

    • John

Yeah, 2012′s was much better (mostly due to the Red Bull Stratos)

  • dgarra

So basically 2012 was a much more eventful year.

  • Lucas Tetrault

They have some of the best marketing without it being HEY LOOK AT OUR COMPANY/PRODUCT and still make it relevant. Bravo @Google

  • samosa king

I’m surprised Motorola X Phone wasn’t one of them.

    • droidify

Wasn’t it rumored to have only sold 500k units like two months in? It may have been huge in the tech world but that is about a day of sales for the GS4 or iPhone.

      • Adrynalyne

There are always more sheep than shepherds.

        • Andy Taylor

Yes, numbers are not a reliable gauge of quality. Hyundai sell many more cars that Tesla. I am VERY experienced in Andorid devices and the X has been in my hands much longer that any other device with no plans on changing.

          • droidify

I wasn’t talking about quality or performance. I know the X is top notch. The comment I responded to was surprised it wasn’t in the top 10 in google searches. I would be surprised if it was in the top 50 searches. That is where numbers matter.

          • alex drum

Jesus man! You need to stop with this whole self promoting BS. You talk about everything like you are some all knowing God! Owning, rooting, roming your device doesn’t make you “VERY experienced”. When you come off like a dick no one is going to listen to your opinion regardless of its validity. PS Hyundai makes VERY reliable cars and almost all of them are a fraction of the price of a Tesla. Not to mention Teslas are a pain in the long run because of the whole battery powered thing. The target market is different, the intended application is different, the cost is different… what im saying is your example was bad… and thats putting it nicely.

          • Adrynalyne

Speaking of coming off like a dick…

          • alex drum

Calling out some self-righteous know it all doesn’t make someone a dick. Tell me what are you credentials for being VERY experienced haha? You read droid life? I have been unlocking, rooting, and roming for years. 5 years to be exact. I have messed around with some simple coding but there are many people more experienced than me therefore I don’t consider myself VERY experienced.

          • Adrynalyne

Its not what you said, it is how you said it.

            Here are his credentials:

He buys every gdamn phone that comes out. His experience, truly is what he has experienced. DL and rooting aren’t part of that equation. He constantly swaps phones. I think he is nuts, but I think it gives him real credence in what he says as well for this phone vs others.

          • alex drum

How do you know any of that for a fact? Sorry I didn’t wrap my reply in rose petals and warm fuzzy blankets. honestly people need to stop getting offended so easily, thats what is making the world so inefficient. No one feels that they can say what they think because they will offend someone and they end up wasting time coming up with some nice way to say or do things instead of just saying what needs to be said or doing what needs to be done. If you want to beat around the bush and waste time, fine; the government wastes huge amounts of time every day… so you are not alone! But thats not the way I do things.

          • Adrynalyne

How do I know? Because he is a friend of mine and I have done business with him. I see no reason to doubt him.

Honestly, I don’t care how you state your replies, but if you call someone a dick and then come off as one, nobody will listen to your opinion either.

          • alex drum

Evidently you do care how I state my replies because you found it necessary to down vote my comment and post a reply. You definitely were not replying to any of my facts. So you are now using the exact phrase you had a problem with, I know that because you have a problem with me saying “dick” and that phrase is the only time I said that, back at me? Through the transitive property you just called yourself a dick. Nice.

          • Adrynalyne

Devolving into word play, I see. Two can play that game.

“How do you know any of that for a fact? Sorry I didn’t wrap my reply in rose petals and warm fuzzy blankets. honestly people need to stop getting offended so easily, thats what is making the world so inefficient.”

Yet you found the need to tell Andy he was coming off as a dick, while doing the same yourself. Clearly you didn’t want anyone listening to your opinion either.

As for your facts, state some and we can debate about it.

          • alex drum

What? I never said that calling out someone and using “dick” in the wording made the person doing the calling out a dick. That is what you said. You are getting confused. Infact my quote that you used back up my point. Also in the wording I used dick to mean someone coming off as a pompous self righteous know it all, not someone who is “mean”. You are misquoting and or getting confused. I can run laps around you all day if you want to do this.

          • Adrynalyne

“Jesus man! You need to stop with this whole self promoting BS. You talk about everything like you are some all knowing God! Owning, rooting, roming your device doesn’t make you “VERY experienced”. When you come off like a dick no one is going to listen to your opinion regardless of its validity.”

            Sounds pretty offended to me.

“Sorry I didn’t wrap my reply in rose petals and warm fuzzy blankets. honestly people need to stop getting offended so easily, thats what is making the world so inefficient.”

            Yet, Andy offended you ?

Maybe you need thicker skin yourself. And oh dear, you were downvoted on a comment. Terrible!

So about those laps…you want a head start? Grab a tissue on your next pass.

          • alex drum

I wasn’t offended haha. If you want to misinterpret my feeling thats on you. I could say you sound like you want me to give me $1,000,000… but that interpretation would be as wrong as yours. My point on the down vote comment was clear, it had nothing to do with emotion. you need to learn better reading comprehension before you try to start things haha. You seem to be wafting my exhaled air into a bottle, capping it, handing it back to me, and claiming you made a point.

          • Adrynalyne

Witty comeback. Nothing but rhetorical fencing. Obviously we don’t know each other’s emotions, but you claimed to know mine, and now you say I misinterpreted you. Nothing more than hypocritical nonsense from you, AGAIN.

Come up with something original instead of telling people how they act, only to do it yourself. I am done here, as hypocrites are annoying. I am sure you want the last word to be cool though, so feel free to post it.

          • alex drum

Don’t reply if you take back everything and admit I am the best person ever. Yes, I am indeed 3.

          • Andy Taylor

(So there will be no “misquotes”)
Me: “Yes, numbers are not a reliable gauge of quality. Hyundai sell many more cars that Tesla. I am VERY experienced in Andorid devices and the X has been in my hands much longer that any other device with no plans on changing.”

You: “Jesus man! You need to stop with this whole self promoting BS. You talk about everything like you are some all knowing God! Owning, rooting, roming your device doesn’t make you “VERY experienced”. When you come off like a dick no one is going to listen to your opinion regardless of its validity. The target market is different, the intended application is different, the cost is different… what im saying is your example was bad… and thats putting it nicely.”

Wow. Really? I mean dude. Besides the typo and a not perfect analogy what crawled up your ass? The need to just troll? Did you even read the context was in which I submitted my reply?

I do not need to submit my CV to post my thoughts on DL? As Adrynalyne has already stated I have owned many, many devices. Moreover, I use and test many Android modifications / applications that are well known in the Android community before beta. How/why? Because I know what I am doing. Does that make me “VERY” experienced? I believe it does…. FYI rooting and flashing roms etc is kid stuff once it is in the wild. If you don’t agree, fine, that is your opinion but don’t go into name calling and jumping to inaccurate assumptions. As Adrynalyne has tried to communicate to you is the old “Pot calling the kettle black” but still you persist.

I apologize to the DL community for this discussion in an open forum.

          • alex drum

You obviously have no idea what “troll” means. Glad you stated the exact same thing I did “FYI rooting and flashing roms etc is kid stuff once it is in the wild” I pretty much said this verbatim. There is literally nothing to back up your claims that you are a beta tester for android and that you have access to pre production hardware. If you want to be overly sensitive (which you obviously are because you found it necessary to bring in two people) fine, go ahead and throw a fit because I called you out.

          • Andy Taylor

You called me out, what a joke.
#1 Adrynalyne replied on his own
#2 I never claimed to have access to pre-production hardware
            #3 Believe what you want

          • alex drum

Yep, total coincidence that he came to a day old post and scrolled down until he saw our conversation and he happens to be friends with you, he said you were friends at least… haha. It is a logical step if you are such a prestigious alpha(thing that comes before beta)/beta tester… a person that has owned every phone to come out (again this is what your friend said) I would imagine you would have access to some special hardware. I find it funny you say “before beta”… hinting that you don’t know the word alpha haha… you seem too legit. If you constantly test such prestigious software I would imagine your name would pop up when I search “Andy Taylor Android” but only a twitter… that I’m assuming is yours comes up haha. I’m not a benefit of the doubt kind of guy… especially when it comes to something that should be EASILY proven with a google search.

          • Andy Taylor

            #4 STFU

          • Adrynalyne

Someone is jealous. Maybe Andy can buy you a Moto X for Christmas if you are a good little boy.

          • Andy Taylor

            Bah get off my lawn

          • alex drum

Definitely… Unfortunately I actually have no interest in the Moto X and if I did I would go out a buy one haha. I’ll take a free one, but I would also take a free Iphone, easy cash in my pocket.

          • Mike Marzano

I could recite my resume, but somehow I doubt anyone would believe.. I’ll just say I haven’t had to purchase a phone since 2006.. Either the VCC or my job has provided me MANY devices. Recent devices include Note 3, HTC One, iPhone 5s, Galaxy S4, iPhone 5, GS3, BB Z30, Q10, Z30, Lumia 928, Bionic, HTC Thunderbolt, and on… From a pure USE stand point, the X performs very well (except maybe the camera in low light), and gives an amazing user experience. I don’t care how many Moto is rumored to have sold compared to anyone else. Its the first phone I have actually purchased since 2006, and I got the Dev Edition in early November (so higher price), after using a carrier supplied demo for 2 months. It certainty gives a better day to day experience than my GS4 which is a “top seller” And I certainly agree with Andy Taylor.

          • alex drum

Thats nice and all… but I didn’t bring up any of that in the comment you replied to.

      • Chris M

I’d like to see the numbers from the Cyber Monday deal as well as how many people waited until Moto Maker was available on their specific carrier. How many are waiting for the wood backs? Personally dont see the appeal but i guess to each his own.

      • TechTinker11

That was for Q3, and it was released half way through it, and only available on 1-2 carriers. And you can’t expect a Brand new phone to compete with the big names. Did the GS1 sell amazing in a day? Did the GS2? No you got to work its way up.
With it now more spreadout, price drop, and more time. Its doing pretty good.

    • Chris

the moto x was way over hyped -pre launch – now its nothing special. hardware customizations are its main selling point.,

      • Dreadscar

except its a fantastic phone and its perfect in almost every way, the spec wars are worthless, experience is the new “spec” and the Moto X is an absolutely phenomenal experience. this ofc is my opinion, and i realize its not representative of everyone, however, if youve not used it outside the VZW store for 10 mins, how would you even begin to have a relevant opinion?

        • Adrynalyne

Spec whores will downvote you for this.

          • Andy Taylor

            Spec are NOT everything.

          • Justin W

Apparently there’s only one of them left. Interesting…

      • Andy Taylor

No the main selling point to the masses is ease of use. Secondly, for the tech-heads it is 95% AOSP with fast updates to Android latest OS.

      • Andy Taylor

So what phone do you have? IF you are on Android then you should take a closer look because I know for a fact that the Moto X is the future direction of Google. The product line will be expanded but not by much. Get a clue.

    • Andy Taylor

      Agreed
