Android 4.4.2 Rolling Out to Nexus 5 and Nexus 7, Possibly More (Updated)

nexus 7 4.4.2 update

We received a report a moment ago from a reader who was notified to update his Nexus 7 (2012) to Android 4.4.2 (build KOT49H). We’re still awaiting more info from him, but a user on reddit and another on XDA also are confirming the arrival of yet another update.

We should point out that Sprint support is showing that the Nexus 5 is due an update to build KRT49H (pretty sure it’s KOT49H) today, which is a build we have yet to see. The Nexus 5 just received its Android 4.4.1 update last week as build KOT49E

Sprint lists the changelog as being:

  • Fix for clearing the VM Indicator
  • Fix for delivery of the VM Indicator
  • Various additional software fixes
  • Security enhancements

UPDATE:  Screenshot added. The update is indeed rolling out as KOT49H (Android 4.4.2).

UPDATE 2:  Here is the Nexus 5 direct OTA update link. [Download Link]

UPDATE 3:  We now have reports of the Nexus 7 (2013) and Nexus 4 receiving the update as well.

UPDATE 4:  Here is the Nexus 4 direct OTA update link. [Download Link]

UPDATE 5:  Here is the Nexus 7 (2013) OTA update link. [Download Link]

UPDATE 6:  Here is the Nexus 10 direct OTA update link. [Download Link]

I got the notice to upgrade OTA on my Nexus 5, when I try to upgrade I get the message, process com.google.process.gapps has stopped. OK, anyone know the cause or cure? Thanks

  • AG

I am using N5. I never inserted a SIM to the phone as I am using another phone. I am not getting any updates, neither 4.4.1 or 4.4.2. It will come only via GSM, not wifi?

  • alex drum

The powerbar Is new on my 2012 nexus 7

  • Joseph

My nexus 7 (2012) got the 4.4.2 update whilst my nexus 5 is on 4.4 still…. Logic… At least I’ve got it on 1 device 🙂

    • CraigBoyte

I have the exact same situation here

  • Albert Paul

Screencap of 4.4.2 shows it’s a 54 mb update while offline update lists here for Nexus 5 shows only 1.7 mb ??? May be those who didn’t get 4.4.1, it’s included in 4.4.2 ? I’m confused whether to sideload this 4.4.2 or wait for official online system update !!!

  • Chris Wortman

Instead of waiting for Google to get their act together, I simply ADB Sideloaded 4.4.1 and 4.4.2, the procedure is so simple a toddler could do it. I got so sick of waiting. Next update I am going to download it onto my PC, and sideload it. So much easier than waiting for fixes that already exist.

  • oldanbo

    I meant 2012 Nexus 7, sorry.

  • iNomNomAwesome

Are 4.4.1 an 4.4.2 gonna fix the Bluetooth music that 4.4 broke?

  • jamaall

4.4 on my Nexus 7 actually made my experience worse with wifi issues and issues in chrome among others. I’m glad they’re sending out patches for it quickly. Though I never even got 4.4.1 and 4.4.2 is already rolling out lmao

  • dbdroid

Just got 4.4.2 on my Nexus 10

  • Deusx

If only 4.4.2 fixed issues with email sync. Some people are reporting that the exchange issues have been fixed, but other people are still having issues with other protocols. For me a POP3 account that I have gets stuck in a sync loop and kills the battery in a matter of hours. If you have been having similar issues post in this google support thread: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/nexus/contacts-and-sync/nexus-5/8FGjFTNkcPU , I created it myself to bring attention to the fact that the email sync issue is not exclusive to exchange accounts.

  • Godzilla

Why no links for OG Nexus 7?

  • Andre Hill

i haven’t got any of ota updates yet…..:( anybody know why?

    • LionStone

      Same here

      • Andre Hill

iv tried manually, and still cant update

        • LionStone

Yea, I’m just leaving well enough alone…I do look forward to the update for my N5 for the removal of voicemail notification…

    • Brad

could take months to roll out. If you check and are rejected during a phase of the roll-out, you don’t get another chance to get it til the next phase.

  • Percise Windom

I got my update on my Nexus 7 2013

  • Clintro

    Got it here

  • rotard777

For some reason i feel like the delayed release of 4.4 to the nexus line was partially on purpose. Before then the moto x was not selling as well as they hoped, imagine if they blew everyones minds away by releasing 4.4 on the X. everyone instantly wants one, then they have the 150 off moto x sale. I think it was a slight set up to hype the moto x and try to get it sell. Of course i still think it was delayed at first but further delayed to promote the amazingness of Moto and the X

  • Michael Sahaid

    My Nexus 7 (2013) got 4.4.2 OTA.

  • fakename

I think you have the links to the OTA files mislabeled: the wifi Nexus 7 2013 build number for 4.4.1 is KOT49E but the OTA link for the Nexus 10 shows “from KOT49E” and the Nexus 7 link says something else.

  • MrT

Stupid update button. Such a placebo…

  • You all are a bunch of wussies. I’m on 4.3 on my GNex and I’m content with the fact it’s not going any further! That’s being tough right there!

  • cleffy
  • Brad Dickmann

    2012 Nexus 7 just got 4.4.2. Never got 4.4.1

  • Jonathan

Just got the notification when i was going to sideload it 😀

  • Seb

I’m on the nexus 4 and I just received the update

  • a3uge

Did anyone even get the 4.4.1 update OTA?

    • LionStone

      Nope…N5 or N7’13

  • guest

Automatic OTA from 4.4.1 with TWRP, 1.7 MB

  • Capt. Crunch

Wow my 4.4 Nexus 5 is now 2 versions behind :'(

  • p0k3y

Nexus 5 here. Can I let it do the update automatically if I got TWRP? If not, where can I find the zip that it downloaded? Thanks.

  • cleffy

I couldn’t sideload the OTA from that nexus 7 2013 link, since it is KRT16S to KOT49H. Need the OTA for KOT49E to KOT49H.

  • Mike Fromson

Downloaded for my N5 and flashed with TWRP like any normal zip…worked like a charm! Thanks DL!!!

  • David VanHouse

the OTA files sizes will differ depending on wether or not a device already has 4.4.1 installed. The <2mb OTA files assume 4.4.1 is already installed.

  • sagisarius

It just got the over the air installed to my Nexus 4, one thing it adds is better support for that new launcher… on 4.4 the lock screen still had black bars, with 4.4 it’s all transparent now.

  • Sean Elliott

Still haven’t gotten 4.4.1 on T-Mobile, anyone else on T-Mobile not received either?

    • Skittlez

i didn’t but it doesn’t go by carrier. i got the 4.4.2 noti once i read this article like an hour ago

      • Sean Elliott

Yeah I didn’t think it did but I just wasn’t sure.

  • jbdan

Love me some Nexus updates go Google!

  • Brenden Keene

hahaha! I just got it as I started reading this! Skipped 4.4.1 but that’s fine with me!

  • Been waiting for my Nexus 5 update to 4.4.1 since it was announced, went and clicked update and now it’s updating to 4.2.2 woot.

    • Josh Sleeper

      I’d love to think that it’s “updating” to 4.2.2, not 4.4.2. 😉

  • Giovanni Palazzo

My nexus 4 is running 4.4, can I jump to 4.4.2?

    • Skittlez

    • sagisarius

      yeah, mine just did

  • m1ghtysauc3

I hadn’t even gotten 4.4.1 yet (2012 N7). After reading this I went to theAbout section and hit the update button and tada! 4.4.2

  • zapote21

The N7 update file is from 4.4 Mine is on 4.4.1

  • cubajr

Just got it on my Nexus 4. Brazil here.

  • g2gsr

Sort of off topic. If anybody has a screenshot of KitKat, right out of the box on the N5, please go edit the wiki page

I can’t find my “out of the box”

    • grumpyfuzz

Well, the Nexus 4’s launcher is from aosp, while the Nexus 5 uses a custom one, the google experience launcher.

  • Tony Byatt

Y’all may need to redo your N5 Camera review…4.4.2 seems to have really improved the camera…

  • guest

    1.7 MB on N5

  • Jack

Can I install this update on my 2013 Nexus 7 rooted and unlock? or Do i have to relock and unrooted before this? Thanks

    • roguereversal

if you still have stock recovery, then you’re fine for the OTA

if you have a custom recovery installed )aka clockworkMod or TWRP) then you have to either go back to stock recovery for the OTA, or wait for someone to post a flashable zip file of the update which you can then just flash using your custom recovery

  • Tony Petraglia
  • CHRIS42060

No hangout update, and still on 4.4……. What did my N5 ever do to cause Google to hate it? Poor guy just wants a little love.

  • Kyle

Do you guys remember the days when it used to be “man…that’s BS i’m still on froyo and everyones got ICS!” now folks be complaining…”Man i’m on 4.4 and haven’t even gotten 4.4.1 yet…that’s BS!” LOL 😛

    • Kevin

These are nexus phones were talking about here though. There’s still a lot of phones that don’t even have Kit Kat yet.

  • Rovert Alonzo

I got OTA 4.2.2 in my Nexus 4 a minute ago. This is in Mexico

    • Ian

      Going backwards?

Don’t worry, lots of tech sites keep fat fingering the version code.

  • nvitone23

If I am stock rooted on my N5 and I take an OTA update will I lose root?!

    • Shawn Meilicke

      • nvitone23

    • Godzilla

      Just use the Nexus toolkit

      • nvitone23

i have a mac and i dont think the toolkit is 4.4.1 or 4.4.2 ready yet

  • Robert Williames

Mine just got the OTA 4.4.2
