Moto X Kit Kat Update Rolling Out Now to Verizon Devices!

moto x kit kat update

Would you look at that – the Moto X Android 4.4 update is already rolling out to Verizon variants and we’re only an hour removed from Motorola making it official. We’re pulling the update now and will have more in a minute.

To see if the update is available to your device, head into Settings>About phone>System updates.

Update:  We just put together a quick hands-on tour here!

Cheers jbartcaps, Keaka, Noah, Brandon, and roth!

  • Justen DeBowles

I wonder… Do fandroids still think verizon is the devil?

Sent from my VZW Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

  • Jason B

No one really mentioned OpenGL ES 3.0 support since that was a 4.3 feature, but since we skipped 4.3, we now get that support with Kit Kat 4.4.

  • droidrazredge

Can anyone, besides the people that think this staggered update idea that Google has is godsend, please explain to me how Motorola is able to distribute the 4.4 update through two processes: that is, one their internal testing and secondly Verizon internal testing and network, faster than Google does through their own network to Nexus devices ? from the looks it seems more people got the update the first day than people with nexus devices have over the seven days its been since Google started their roll-out.

  • Scottyb112

I can’t believe the VZW Moto X is getting the update.. But yet, still nothing on my Nexus 7 2013.. Unbelievable!

  • Tom Luley

Any idea on how to do it on a rooted device with custom recovery? Or do I need to wait for a zip to flash?

  • droidrazredge

I bet all the Nexus 4 & 7 owners are thinking “what the eff, how does a non nexus device get it before mine ?”

    • NexusMan

If I didn’t think the Moto X was the truth since day 1, I would be thinking that…but I always knew the Moto X rocked.

  • arthur2142

Kit Kat seems to have broken FoxFi. Does anyone know if there is another work-around to get hotspot up and running (other than rooting)?

    • NexusMan

      Now…that would be a problem.

  • jhjr24

Hello MOTO you have won my heart again. Getting a custom Moto X as soon as they add that wood baby.

    • NexusMan

      You and me both.

  • Nick

Now how about the Droid Maxx since they are almost the same phone?

    • NexusMan

But they’re not. One’s a Droid. Just like The LG G2 doesn’t have it yet, despite it being “almost the same phone” as the Nexus 5. *wink*

  • Moi

My phone updated but I’m stuck at work until 5. *insert sad face*

  • Scott Kart

Can someone please explain to me ART?

    • Jason B

It’s just the new Android RunTime (ART) that will eventually replace the aging Dalvik runtime. Google has been working on it for a while now, and is still working on it since it’s experimental and only available in the Dev Options menu.

As Google continues to develop ART, it’ll become more and more optimized, though it’s pretty good now. Some people report better battery life and improved performance, however, it can break compatibility with some apps. I haven’t encountered one yet.

  • justin

Omg I’m so happy and surprised it came this quick! Makes me happy I made the purchase on this model and happy to stick with the new Motorola! Update downloading now!

  • WalkerNA

Coming from a Droid Charge, getting this update so quickly is just feels absurd but I’m not complaining! The only issue I have is that I still cannot connect my FitBit Force to my Moto X (the FitBit site claimed that Motorola did not ship the full Bluetooth 4.0 libraries and I was hoping this update would remedy that). Besides that, smooth as butter!

  • zach wheeler

Just watched the hands-on video about the update….. not a whole lot of new stuff. Kind of a let down. Cool that it came out fast though.

  • zach wheeler

Just got mine up and running on 4.4. Besides the transparent bars, can someone explain the main differences that I should be looking for? I run a black background anyway so my phone looks exactly the same (except for the grey status bar….which is not that big of a deal). I thought this would be some sort of life changing update…… Everything pretty much looks the same.
Can someone explain what I’m missing?

    • zach wheeler

and the dialer is all fancy and complicated now……..

      • thefullritz

Go back out to the droid life page, they just posted a hands on video….all about KK

    • tyguy829

you can use google wallet! sideload the n5 version, then it should appear in your tap and pay menu

  • Malcolm Love

I’m so hype for my Maxx to get this.

  • cocomojoe2

    no yellow pages dialer?

  • Jeremy Diamond

Loading mine now! I’m still surprised mainly because I’m a Verizon customer lol

  • Jeremy Case

Love my Note 3 but seriously thinking of switching to a moto x

  • metropolis

Here’s my conspiracy theory, curious if it holds water.

Verizon needs to get their LTE phones on Band 4 ASAP to reduce current congestion on their Band 13. There was a news report a few weeks back about how this would be rectified ‘before the end of the year’.

Now, why does this matter? My theory is that this update also enables Band 4. They’re working with device manufacturers to get these updates out ASAP to free up the congestion with the added benefit of making power users happy with these expedient updates.

    • John Galt

But do we know if this enables band 4? I’ve been trying to figure it out to no avail.

  • steve0617

Thread jack (sorry!) – Moto now saying Razr HD, Maxx and M to get Kit Kat. goo.gl/78CzYc

  • Tristan

Pretty much the only question left now is: should I buy one now, or wait for wood backs??
The uncertainty is killing me :(

  • Kanaga Deepan N

I do hope this will force others like HTC and Sammy to update at least their flagships to KK fast…

  • Stephen Rajek

Basking in Kit Kat goodness. Thank you Verizon and Moto!

  • Daniel

Now if only everyone used stock or near-stock roms on their phones this might be more the norm….instead Samsung has stopped roll-out of 4.3 on the GS3 due to bugs. :-P

  • Jason B

Yes, ART runtime is available in the Developer Options!

    • ROB

      Battery life should be better

  • Me

I think this might solidify the Moto X as the best ALL AROUND android phone of the year.

    • Stevedub40

Very much agreed. What they have done with this phone is nothing short of amazing.

      • Steve B

And there were so many haters in the beginning. Funny how things change. Is the spec war over? Or just postponed for now?

        • Patmw123

The camera seems to have been noticeably improved as well. At least to my eyes.

        • CHRIS42060

The spec war will never be over…… In a discussion thread of another post (possibly on another blog) there is an argument over specs happening as we speak.

          • michael arazan

The specs are identical with my GS3 replacement for my GNex from asurion. I would gladly trade my gs3 for a phone that doesn’t stutter and lag like crazy. Moto X is getting faster updates than my GNex did it seems, I hope Verizon will keep it up and cooperate. The only downfall of KitKat I see is everyone says Flash will not work on it anymore which kind of sucks. Not every site uses html like comedy central for instance to see daily show clips and extended interviews. I’m pretty happy with an s4 seems twice as fast as the GNex was. But I have not had any experience with a faster mobile device or network because vzw 4g is slow as hell here i the middle of St.L.

    • Adam Truelove

It really is the best phone I’ll never buy.

      • turdbogls

same here. if i were to buy a verizon phone on contract, this would probably be it…but i am just too happy with my Nexus 5 and T-mobile right now.

        • Adam Truelove

Headed to the Nexus 5 on GoPhone in the next month or so.

        • mickmayi

exactly what im doing tomorrow. leaving my Verizon Gnex and getting a N5 on t-mobile… ill admit im a little scared

          • turdbogls

I was at first, but as long as you have the coverage (T-mobile is better than VZW in my 2 main places of work and home) and matches it everywhere else i have gone in the past 2 weeks…DL speeds are faster too) you will be happy.

        • Booyah

Since I have unlimited data with a VZW Moto X, pay the same as I would at T-Mobile, and have Verizon’s coverage, I’d be stupid to leave.

          • turdbogls

how is that possible? the unlimited plan at VZW is like $120 or something isn’t it? its like $70 on T-mobile.
either way, i was paying $75 on verizon for my plan, i am now paying $30 for superior coverage (yes superior) for 95% of my usage. I am super happy with both the phone (N5) and the service.

          • Booyah

That’s good. I travel a lot, so I need the coverage, and Verizon has the best coverage where I am (SoCal). I need service everywhere. I pay $150 (after taxes) for my wife and I to both have unlimited data and text, and all the minutes we need, and also includes an extra line. T Mobile wouldn’t be any cheaper for me, and the coverage isn’t as good. Different strokes I suppose.

          • turdbogls

gotcha….yeah other lines makes the switch…not as sweet. I’m experiencing the same trying to get my wife to ditch her VZW family plan but the numbers just dont work out.

          • Booyah

It’s always good to have options. I’m glad TMo is offering what they are, and that it works out for a lot of people. It was a big gap in the market. But until Verizon decides to pry unlimited from my cold dead hands, my situation is just too good right now. The second that happens though, I’m leaving.

          • turdbogls

I hear ya. i actually sold my unlimited contract last week and made $200 off it simply because i was afraid unlimited Data was going to be forcefully ripped from my grasp fairly soon. well, that coupled with my addiction for wanting the latest and greatest, not wanting to buy full price $600 phones, and that t-mobile works for me. :)

      • brkshr

If I couldn’t get a Nexus phone, the Moto X would be it for me. I’m actually a tiny bit jealous my GF is getting a Moto X, but I know that it wouldn’t satisfy my tinkering needs.

        • Adam Truelove

It wouldn’t satisfy my pure stock, big 1080p screen, easily unlocked, good ROM support needs.

          • NexusMan

Nexus 5 isn’t pure stock as it has a skinned launcher.

    • Moku

Honestly, I agree. Next year, I’m getting either the next Nexus or whatever else Motorola has up it’s sleeve. Probably what Motorola has, seeing as the Moto X is just an amazing device overall.

      • NexusMan

I agree totally with you. I was really excited about the Moto X, and waited to see the Nexus, but pretty much knew the Nexus 5 would have had to have been extraordinary for me to get it over the Moto X, and it just isn’t. Next year, it will most likely be between these 2 again. The Moto X is the only phone ouside of a Nexus that I’ve been so excited about it’s sequel.

  • http://bjunity.org/ Bill B

Ah…the fly in the ointment. Just updated to KK and found that all the annoying VZW apps and crapware that I had disabled have suddenly been re-enabled again.

    Shocker.

    • derbo904

      well DUH.

  • Me

    As a N4 owner….

  • yay!

My motomaker moto x hasn’t shipped yet. I wonder if it will have 4.4 pre-installed. That would be fantastic… super clean install :)

    • thefullritz

Ordered mine yesterday. Wondering the same….can’t wait till it gets here Friday!

    • Terrormaster

Same here, ordered mine yesterday too. Fingers crossed that KK will be preloaded. If not, no biggie cause I’ll get it OTA. Man I’m so glad I opted for the MX over the N5… And my poor N7 waits for its OTA… Sadly it waits.

  • Cameron Laudick

    anyone know file size?

  • BuckNut23

This is awesome since my moto x is currently sitting at home waiting for me to open it!

    • Cameron Laudick

      Lot of buckeyes on here!

      • Michigan Guy

        Unfortunately

  • Tyler

If you haven’t gone to software updates and clicked check for updates do it now, i’m downloading it as you read this.

  • iNomNomAwesome

Holy sh*t!!! Not only is verizon getting it first, but its actually downloading for me right now! I always get it after everyone else!

  • chris kilps

order my over the weekend I guess i will have a big up date as soon as i turn it on

  • cjlee89

Noticed the wireless icon is not spaced correctly from the 4G icon. Not a huge deal but my OCD kicks in.

  • Justin Duncan

don’t forget to change dalvik to art!

    • chris13417

      what does that do exactly?

      • Jason B

Different, faster runtime; Dalvik is dated. You have to unlock the developer options by pushing the build version about 7 times or so.

      • Justin Duncan

        makes it run smoother

      • chris13417

Ok cool. I saw your post and went ahead and switched without knowing what it does. Noticed the reboot hung on the verizon logo and the optimizing apps process is taking a lot longer than the initial boot so I was starting to worry. Thanks for the tip!

      • Justin Duncan

makes it run a lot smoother!

  • Joseph Ferguson

Downloading now! So worth my 0 dollars + activation fee! Thanks

  • Kyle Miller

Verizon is keeping Motorola folk happy. Well seeing that they are Droid business/branded for a long time, they might as well keep it up.

  • Michael Contreras

    So, yeah, Nexus 4 ota?

  • crazed_z06

    Well.. that escalated quickly..

  • Josh

Love the phone… completely astounded that Verizon did something first. Kudos Verizon! For what I pay, you finally let me get an update first.

    • Josh

Booting like a champ… I have completely abandoned the thought of getting work done right now.

  • Miles Prower

    Network may be monitored
    By an unknown third party.

A trusted credential installed on your device is making this possible.

    Must be FoxFi.

    • John Sanatar

      Do you use FoxFi?

      • http://www.baldypal.com/ BaldyPal

since FoxFi has to install a Credential and mandates a screen lock, is there a good alternative for non-rooted users?

  • Ej McCarty

And I said oh lawd jesus I have kit kat :)

    • LionStone

And you can’t beat that with a whiffle ball bat! :-)

  • Stevedub40

    Downloading now!

  • Weber

    Do OTAs count against data?

    • JWil

      yes

    • EdubE24

      Yes

      • Weber

Oh well. F it. I’d have upgraded even if I knew that info beforehand.

  • Patrick Chapman

Have I died and gone to Heaven?

  • Michael

I love how the post image keeps updating with the progress!

  • djjsin

    Installed and Running 4.4! yay!

now to figure out how to root.

  • JWil

Wow, the widgets drawer got left in…thats kind of a shocker…no issues yet

    • Patrick Chapman

That’s because Google took it out with the GEL launcher and since the MOTO X doesn’t get that, it’s stay in like before. You can download the laucher APK and get the fixed real easy though.

      • JWil

        Interesting. Thanks for the info.
