Video: “Beam Me Up, Scotty” Star Trek Easter Egg Found in Google Now

Google Now

Google loves Easter Eggs, and users have been sending in tips about them for quite a while. For example, instead of saying, “Ok Google,” you can say “Ok computer” or “Ok Jarvis.” Little things like that are nice, but this newly discovered one is quite funny.

After prompting the search feature by saying “Ok Google,” you can command Google Now with the phrase “Beam me up, Scotty.” From here, Google Now aka Majel, will spit back the famous quote – in a broken Scottish accent mind you – “I cannot do it, Captain. I don’t have the power.”

Go try it for yourself.

when i put this into youtube on my windows desktop, just “beam me up scotty” and then search, youtube “beams” in the results like a transporter. wasn’t sure if anyone else saw that =P

  • notechnomo

    “what’s the best smartphone?”

    • Matthew Ponce de Leon

“No one phone is right for everyone.”

  • MaddHatterr

HA! This is great. It’s amazing how something so pathetically trivial will completely turn a bad day upside down. Is there a site with the found “easter eggs” listed?

  • QtDL

I wonder what Siri would say. Lol

  • zurginator

“OK Jarvis” makes me even more sad that the male voice (English UK) no longer exists. 🙁

  • Armus

This is awesome. I’m a true fan and this bring back find memories of Jimmy Doohan

  • carluverdrm2004

Star Trek reference on Droid Life. It’s a good day!

  • ramifications

There is also, “Who are you?” . This one is pretty funny.

    Thanks DL!

  • MistaButters

What the hell? None of the other Okays work for me

  • Ok Jarvis doesnt work for me however this one did.

  • The_16th_Doctor

“bacon number (actor)” is also amusing

  • robert moran

what’s funny is I was holding my phone and it picked up the video saying it

  • master94

A bit unrelated but at first I thought the dialer icon on Kitkat looked awful but the more I see it the more I like it

    • Adam Marr

      a “bit” unrelated?

  • MikeSaver

    OK computer doesn’t work!

    • I can confirm that it does.

      • MistaButters

None of the other okays work for me 🙁

      • Terrance Steiner

I have a Razr HD, ‘OK Jarvis’ works but ‘OK Computer’ does not. It must work on some handsets and not others.

        • Simon Belmont

OK Computer and OK Jarvis both work for me. Using a Nexus 5.

Maybe it’s only in Google Search 3.0? Oh well.

    • If you on Nexus 4 or any other one than Nexus 5 it doesn’t work unless you manually edit the files to use custom phrases

      • NorCalGuy

Gnex running 4.4 and all the phrases work perfectly

    • AlpaXray

Even saying Ok, Cool. Works for me. I found this out by accident while talking to a friend with my phone in front of me.

  • these are always fun

  • Ej McCarty

Why don’t you guys write a useful article such as how we can now flash custom roms on the note 3

    • If you don’t know how to flash custom ROM’s, you shouldn’t be attempting it.

      • Ej McCarty

Um I didn’t mean how to do it but rather the fact that we can do it now. Read my comment.if you were smart you’d know that that’s what I’m talking about. I’m sure people would be more interested in that than an app that you can sell women’s clothes on.

        • So by your logic we should have articles dedicated to how to install custom ROM’s on every phone, and every carrier? Do you know how many phones and carriers there are? This is exactly what XDA is for.

          • Ej McCarty

No but when a phone as big as the note 3 finally gets custom roms it’s a big deal to a lot of people that own the device.

          • Suralin

Not really. Custom roms on the Note 3, woopdiedoo. It’s nothing special. Plenty of phones, plenty of ROMs, and plenty of people who don’t care because it doesn’t concern their phone or Android as a whole.

          • Steve B

Nobody here cares about your Note 3. Move along.

        • BroRob

If you had proper sentence structure and punctuation, maybe he would have known what you were trying to say. EXAMPLE:

Why don’t you guys write a useful article, such as: “Custom ROMs can finally be flashed on the Note 3.”

  • chnsawalex

Another one is “Who are you?”

  • donkeykong85

    who figures this stuff out?

    • Robert

People, that have more time on their hands than I do…. Thanks!!

  • ChrisCorp

Another fun little trick – if you want to try this without your phone, just open Google.com on your computer and say the exact same thing after clicking on the mic in the search bar (search by voice). BOOM!

    • Hoff16

      This only works in Chrome.

  • D3lusionz

I like the classic.. “Do a barrel roll.”

    • Totally agree, it still carries a certain significance for the use of

  • brkshr

Things like this is what makes Google, Google

  • Tony Byatt

    “OK”, “HEY”…they sound similar…

  • Benjamin Mackie

My favorite is the Dr. Who one where you ask it “When Am I?”

  • Jonathan P

You can also ask it “what is the meaning of life the universe and everything” for the douglas adams fans out there

    • Josh Hendrix

This one makes me upset because 42 is not the meaning of life the universe and everything. Its the answer to the ultimate question of life the universe and everything.

  • 204Guy

That wallpaper tho. Anyone know it?

    • Joseph Barrientos

      is it from fuzz?

  • Jason Casas

not really an Easter-egg but i like “whats another word for donkey” 😉

  • Steve B

This one’s been around for a while but ask Google “how much wood can a wood chuck chuck……….?” Say the whole phrase.

    • Mike

      nothing happens.

      • sirmeili

        You have to say:

“how much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood”

I believe that is what Steve B was referring to, and something does in fact happen 🙂

        • Tony Byatt

          You beat me to it…

        • proparham

tried it. google search has stopped.

          • Razma

works fine for me, googles response is funny.

          • Steve B

        • KC

Actually it’s “how much wood *would* a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood” – using “could” I got nothing 🙂

      • Steve B

  • Josh Hendrix

If you tell it to make you a sandwich it says “poof your a sandwich” or “make it yourself”

    • The_16th_Doctor

if you say “sudo make me a sandwich” it says ok.

  • Martin JoFX

    Hey Google!

    • Kree Terry

i didnt know you could say just hey google

      • Michael Larsen

some phones work like that not all

  • Colton

    ha. ha. ha.

  • Shamu

    Beat feature right here!

    • tlingitsoldier

      Beat feature indeed.

    • TheFirstUniverseKing

      *ba dum pshh*

      …That’s the beat.
