CyanogenMod 10.2 Nightlies Now Up for Verizon’s LG G2

lg g2 camera

Members of the rooted crowded running an LG G2 on Verizon can go grab the first nightly builds available of CyanogenMod 10.2. For those unfamiliar, CM 10.2 will bring a vanilla Android-like experience to your device, complete with a ton of customization options and tweaks to make sure you are getting the most out of your device. CM is basically the industry standard of custom ROMs for Android.

Again, you will need to be rooted and running a custom recovery on your G2 device. If you have that done, flashing the zip file should be relatively easy for any seasoned flasher. You can download the ROM by following the via link below.

Via: Get.cm

Cheers Mitch!

  • larry scervino

One question does downloading affect your signal strength?

  • Laszlo

I installed cm-10.2-20131023-NIGHTLY-vs980 yesterday (don’t forget GAPPS – or you will not have access to your apps via Play Store). So far everything works. Very smooth. The status bar is much less crowded as before. We can remove “PM” from the time display, show battery percentage and symbol. I only miss the 4G indicator, so I don’t know, when 4G is available. I like the most that I can customize the LED (Notification Light), which was a major screw-up in the G2 factory ROM. Even the floating apps work! Good job!

  • Bill Hill
  • geetoo

Lots of other ROMs for the VS980 released last night too! Dev community totally blew up all of a sudden. Even some 4.3 stuff coming out.

  • GJV

If the LG camera can be ported to CM, I’m in. Otherwise I’ll stick with a stock-based ROM. The LG skin isn’t all that bad and everything works so why mess with it?

    • HarvesterX

The CyanogenMod camera takes just as good pictures but lacks features ask Panoramic mode, etc. Well some features thst I might not see I may just not have found yet as the interface isn’t as cool. I hope they can port it over as well but it isn’t affecting the quality of my shots at all.

  • Michael Burdick

There is NO download for the LG G2 on Get.cm
    …unless I’m missing something.

    • GJV

They pulled the first nightly due to the data issue. Should be a new one up soon enough.

  • sweeeeet

Awesome news! Somehow I keep managing to delay myself from ordering the G2. Just wish the damn official Nexus 5 announcement would happen already to see if there’s really going to be a larger battery version of it etc. News like this just brings me one step closer to getting the G2. I hear the stock ROM is pretty awesome in a lot of ways, but I just want to know that there will be good dev support for the device just in case, especially with the odds that LG will likely take forever, or never get around to bumping it to 4.3 and 4.4. I’ve come this far already, I’m gonna try to resist ordering until the end of this month to see if we finally get official word about the N5, but after that, G2 for me too.

  • ανώνυμος

I’m thanking Verizon for getting me into rooting and flashing roms. Without the ‘timely’ updates I got for my GNex, I wouldn’t have considered CM so quickly. Thanks Verizon!

  • wow this is huge news…… basically a nexus 5 now?

thinking about not even leaving VZW now

    • HarvesterX

They said 4.4 will be happening within weeks after they finish with a stable 4.3 on it. Also stated that they are also working on 4.4 alongside with 4.3 but 4.3 is getting priority as of now.

      • so 4.4 is coming to G2 thanks to CM?!

        • HarvesterX

Heard it straight from the horse’s mouth. In fact work has already began but their main efforts will to get a stable 10.2 release first. The monthly snapshot is pretty damn stable so it shouldn’t be long. They do need to optimize the opengl llibraries though as e& benchmarks suffer but it’s an academic area because framerates still don’t drop when playing Dead Trigger 4 in Tegra 4 mode with the tiny mod.

  • Jordan

This is for the international variant…

  • true talk 000

this phone running stock android would be AMAZING.

    • HarvesterX

      And it is.

  • Rob Schoenfeld

I kind of find my self lusting for the G2. The 13 mp and OIS is pretty killer.

  • Courtney Harris

I don’t see it on the site. Has it been pulled??

    • Brian Wolfman

pulled because of data issues, which might be fixed by turning airplane mode on and off. should be back tonight

  • Nate595

Now if we can get nightlies for the T-mobile G2 that would be great.

  • mode3nut

Just visited the CM link. Looks like the Verizon G2 (VS980) ROM isn’t available at the moment

    • RavnosCC

      yea, I’m not seeing it

  • flosserelli

That was fast. Kudos to the LG G2 modding community 🙂

    • Been thinking about getting this, and seeing modding support helps know that if the OEM updates fall off I have the option.

  • lg g2

IMO, the pop-up notifications for an incoming phone call/sms is a killer feature on this phone.
If i’m using another app, i don’t want any incoming call to make the app be replaced with the full screen dialer/phone incoming call screen – I really like the option of seeing the notification, and deciding if i want to answer (switch to dialer/phone app) or not.

    • lg g2

The only thing that i could really use is getting rid of the “slow charging” and the rest of the clutter in the status bar – the NFC icon, the location icon etc.

      • Just_Some_Nobody

Slow charging is easy. Use the supplied charger. Or one from a Nexus 7. Blackberry has one that works too…

I turn off NFC. I simply don’t use it. But that’s me.

        • HarvesterX

Doesn’t the CyanogenMod SMS app have pop-ups? I saw the option, just haven’t tested. Wonder if the phone has thst option. Haven’t looked.

  • Joseph A. Yager

I have to warn potential flashers that data is not really working right now. I have been running this for most of the day, but need to switch back due to that issue. Other than that, CM is a butter-lovers dream. I’m sure there are other issues, but that was the big’n.

    • charles rogers

Yes, agreed, I just got it flashed, and i can’t use any data, it will make calls though.

      • Joseph A. Yager

And you can tell how amazing it will be once it’s ready to go. I know CM isn’t for everyone, but it really does fly with the phone’s crazy innards.

        • HarvesterX

Update… All the data issues are solved..

      • charles rogers

Well i feel dumb now, all i had to do was turn data on, and turn on data roaming. Data works now, i don’t know how big of a fit Verizon is going to throw.

        • Joseph A. Yager

I did that, too – and my (unfounded) fear that roaming charges would somehow be applied led me back to an LG stockish ROM for now

          • charles rogers

I was worried until i checked my network info and it said Verizon. Which one are you using? I was on CleanRom before i flashed CM.

          • Joseph A. Yager

I’m on Jakeday’s Malladus. There are a few mods thrown in on his – medium navbar, decluttered notification bar, and some other under-the-hood tweaks.

    • antinorm

Turn airplane mode on, then turn it off, then data will work. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

  • Greyhame

Wow, that was fast! Man….. this is super tempting. I just purchased the DROID MAXX, and I love touchless control, active notifications, and of course the battery life. But the camera is subpar. I couldn’t stand LG’s skin, but this is so tempting…..

    Penny for your thoughts!

    • lg g2

Don’t believe the reviews – try it for yourself. Install Nova launcher.

      • Greyhame

I did play with it in the store, and watched multiple hands-on videos. I guess I must just be a stock android purist, because the notification shade and the UI were huge turn offs. I think I’m going to hold onto the MAXX and hope the camera update makes its way ASAP.

    • JJ69Chev

I thought the same about the skin, but its not as bad as i thought it would be. I love the phone, i returned a moto X for it, but would love the stock look/ notifcation bar/ dropdown tho

      • Greyhame

Do you miss active notifications? Touchless control? The contextual awareness (e.g. screen coming on automatically when removing your phone from a pocket)? What was your main reason for swapping them?

        • JJ69Chev

honestly, yes to all of the above, but not so much I regret the decision. The main reason I swapped was the X does not do MHL/ Slimport. only way to do HD out/ screen mirror is Miracast. I have an appradio in my truck and didn’t feel like dropping $70 on a miracast dongle. I Loved the X for all the features you mentioned above, but I Love the G2 as well for the beautiful screen, good camera, IR capabilities…

          • Greyhame

Thanks for the replies. Is the screen really that much better?

          • JJ69Chev

I didn’t think i would really notice, i came from a Gnex to the X, then G2. I personally think the screen is amazing

          • HarvesterX

The screen is the best on the market for a smartphone at the moment. By a huge margin in many cases.

        • HarvesterX

Automaton app in Play Store manages your awareness features… Well developed from our friends at XDA

  • Andy Stetson

Hmmm, very tempting. I think I’ll jump once OIS (and other camera awesomeness works), and when knock-on is confirmed. At the very least, i wonder if the stock camera can be sideloaded onto CM (with the proper libs and media profiles of course)

  • charles rogers

I wonder if i can use the LG home with CM for knock on. Oh well going to try it out anyway.

    • Just_Some_Nobody

I believe knock on is it’s own service (runs in the background watching and waiting for those little taps). So if they can get the service work… maybe…

  • GJV

Running stock rooted on my G2 with some UI tweaks and it does almost everything I could ask of it, but CM is pretty tempting. Probably wait a few iterations until they iron out the inevitable major bugs. Also this means a SlimRoms version is probably not far behind. woot!

    • HarvesterX

Monthly snapshot was just released.. Pick it up.

  • Sean

Has anyone experienced call quality issue with their G2? When I am talking on it I am getting like squawking when the person on the other end is talking during the first couple minutes of the call….sometimes really hard to understand and the issue comes and goes. Also the sound quality when streaming music bluetooth in my car does not seem as good…and trust me its not my stereo cause my Samsung worked just fine…

    • Bald_Sasquach

Hmm I’ve only made 20min total of calls in the 4 weeks I’ve had mine (AT&T) but had no problems there. My car bluetooth is teeeerrrible though. Track and artist names don’t show on the screen for play all access, but they do for the default vienna boys nonsense player lol. Bluetooth sound quality is a little worse than my SGS2, but the track skip response times are legitimately 4 or 5 times faster. That S2 took nearly 7 seconds to skip tracks if using the car’s controls.

My only other issue is GPS staying on and running down battery 2% an hour. It doesn’t sound like that big a deal, but my first week and the last 3 days with it I’ll leave work with 96% battery. So it’s really noticable when the GPS acts up. I’ve turned off Google Now, Location Access, and Google App Settings’ ability to locate the phone, which is a lame concession, and even then it still happens most days. 🙁

    • jjjmmmhhh

Yes, the noises are a known issue. There are a few threads about it on some Android message boards including a couple that I’ve started. I, and others, have gone through as many as 3 phones trying to get rid of it without any luck.

  • OneForTheGoodDays

Apparently there are reports of people stuck in Roaming… needs a fix. Also since DRM is broken, Netflix doesn’t work yet.

  • Rich Robinson

Heard the Kingo App now works for the Vzn G2. Does anyone know if you root with the Kingo App if you can put CM10 on?

    • Chris Choncek

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the Kingo App?

      • Raj Bhatt

It is a one-click rooting app that works on a lot of devices. I don’t see the G2 listed on their homepage.

        • Rich Robinson

According to a Facebook post they said it does work. “Kingoapp Yes, model : “LG-D802”, “version” : “4.2.2”. You can root your G2 now.
          Unlike · 1 · October 20 at 10:28pm”

          • Raj Bhatt

Oh ok cool. That is the international GSM model.

  • jack nunez

would any 10.2 gapps work or where do I find the correct ones

  • jack nunez

ate they built in or where are the correct ones

  • Guy Meatdrapes

    This isn’t the Nexus 5

    well… it almost is

    • Just_Some_Nobody

About the only thing in common between the G2 and the N5 is the S800. Different clothes. Different camera. Different screen.

  • jack nunez

    what about gapps

    • zzz525

      What about it?

  • PuttsMoBilesiCit

The only thing this device needs is the fixed notification bar and its perfect. There is no need to root and rom anymore…

    • Blasphemy

    • Guest

The bar? Or the dropdown menu? Because if you’re rooted, there’s an awesome simple mod. This is my setup, running Nova over the stock UI:

      • Travis H

is that a comparison or how did you get the stock on screen buttons on the first image?

    • OneForTheGoodDays

Do you mean the drop down menu? Because there’s a simple awesome mod if you’re rooted:

      • OneForTheGoodDays

        • JJ69Chev

what rom are you running? i miss the stock android look and clean notifcation bar

  • mustbepbs

My LG G Pad 8.3 just shipped from Best Buy 30 minutes ago! With all of the love the G2 has gotten, I hope it spills into the G Pad. Really excited to get it.

    • Chris Choncek

Please report back to us on how you like it. I also have the G2 and was thinking about getting this tablet. Thanks.

      • mustbepbs

Will do! I hope to get it this week!

      • mustbepbs

        Just got it!

Boy that screen is nice. The speakers are nice and loud, and you can actually feel bass in the device (which I love). I’ve got it at half volume and it’s plenty loud.

This thing has zero give and feels very, very nice. I’m used to Samsung’s flimsy plastic and this is so refreshing.

It’s very quick, but LG’s skin is abhorrent. It looks awful. Within the first 5 minutes I put Nova back on it. I’m excited to see development start for this so we can get CM on it. This thing will absolutely sail on CM.

Overall, I’m very pleased with it. I’ll be even more pleased once we can get rid of LG’s awful skin.

  • William Ku

    and it begins…

  • RavnosCC

    Does it include knock-on feature?

    • cmonnats23

I want to keep the knock on feature so bad!

      • DodgingDonkey

According to the top comment on Reddit about this, it does in fact keep Knock-On.

        • RavnosCC

aaaahhhhh, now I have to find $500 somewhere… lol I knew this was coming anyway… but still.

    • Joseph A. Yager

Yes it does – unfortunately right now it doesn’t include data – that’s the problem right now. I tried it out for most of the day and – other than that and a couple of other small issues – this thing flies.

      • James Heyneman

Data works if you turn on roaming data. I’m getting a Verizon IP address so I don’t think I’m actually roaming. The LTE icon will pop up if you toggle airplane mode.

        • Joseph A. Yager

Okay – very good to know!

  • Black Roger

    I love this phone.

    • marilynbright23

If you think Richard`s story is cool…, last week my brothers
friend who’s a single mum worked and got paid $8425 sitting there a twenty
hour week from their apartment and there classmate’s half-sister`s neighbour

  • Greg Morgan

Just bought the At&t variant. Can’t wait, I’ve heard great things about it.

    • Just_Some_Nobody

A note for the AT&T variant:
It has a Carrier IQ service that wakelocks. You can stop it (Settings->Apps-Running->Android Service and stop the iq service. Then go stop Android Service itself) without being root, but it’ll come back after a reboot.
It uses a pretty significant amount of battery if you don’t stop it.

note: you can root and kill it for good.. But I’ve not rooted yet.

BTW, it is an awesome (!!!) phone. Really. That screen. That screen.

      • Greg Morgan

thanks for the tip. It’s surprising that they included CIQ after the whole fiasco. But guess i shouldn’t be surprised since it’s AT&T.

        • Just_Some_Nobody

          No problem.

I almost wouldn’t mind the Carrier IQ if it just wasn’t a buggy piece of junk. But once it’s stopped, it’s no problem.

Don’t let it stunt your enthusiasm for the phone. The G2 is a beast. And a lot of the extras LG has done in the SW are pretty cool.

  • DaveK

This thing is customizable enough that I haven’t seen a need to flash a rom yet.

    • When you flash your first custom ROM you’ll be amazed at how you lasted so long without it.

      • JoshGroff

I’ve reverted from custom ROMs to stock on my Note 2 at least 3 times. I find root and a launcher replacement is more than enough in most cases, especially with expandable storage.

      • Timothy Sternig

I used to Flash ROMs all the time, but it really just got old and frustrating. Most custom ROMs that are out there nowadays just suck. I guess because everyone and their Mom is porting them and hacking them together or something like that…

The amount of work you have to do to keep up with a custom ROM is just tiring. Reading through 100s of pages of posts to see how you can fix this bug or that bug, trying to figure out what the current kernel is to flash, chasing down links to stuff you need for the ROM, hoping someone figures out why your WiFi keeps dropping or why your camera keeps FCing, etc.

I can definitely live without them.

Don’t get me wrong, some ROMs can be nice, but they are very few and far between. If you have a newer phone with a pretty current version of Android there’s really no reason to go through all that hassle.

        • dmagicp

Jellybeans rom is completely bug free and offers an experience on par with stock Android.

          • mode3nut

            Nice to know. Thanks!

          • antinorm

There is no such thing as “completely bug free” software, unless you’re talking about something simple like Hello World.

          • S2556

Gta online is completely bug free /s

        • chjapa

The stable CM Roms are great. Nightlies buggy but for 4.3 thats what your stuck with for now.

        • Wam31

Well, if you don’t get why flashing CM is a good thing, then don’t.
There are so many reasons why you should (if you know how) that I’m not even gonna list them, but I think it’s safe to say that :
1 – You will get updates more frequently,
2 – You will get rid of all the crap that comes with the phone,

From my perspective, I see no reason not to. I mean, wasn’t “swiping a notification to discard it” already implemented in Cyanogen way before Google added it? (that’s a rhetorical question, yes, it was). I had it on my HTC Desire, which, by the way, would have never had Gingerbread if not for CyanogenMod.

The team is very much more reactive and inventive than most manufacturers…

          • HarvesterX

Benchmarks have suffered dearly. 3DMark went from 17468 (Ice storm Unlimited) to between 10k-11k. Linpack from 1080± (I had one ranked at #45) to the 300s. All benches dropped. Antutu the least but even by a great margin. This is expected as It’s 4.3 and we don’t have all the necessary drivers we need (or optimized correct ones).

But… NOVA 3 plays just as fast. Dead Trigger 2 still plays smoothly with Tegra 4 hack.. AND the entire experience seems better. (I’m referring to the CyanogenMod nightlies so that’s expected.. And the latest one.. The data issue is moot now. Most everything works. Well all I’ve tried.

But that has to do with flashing ROMs and the benefits there are also too grea to list. Rooting IMO is something all should do. You can tweak your gps to lock within a second or two. You can add custom urls to hosts file to block ads. It’s the SAME as having Administrator access on Windows. Would you buy Windows if all you got was Guest or elevated privileges? I doubt it. Being able to freely use the hotspot doesn’t hurt either.. I digress

    • svartalf

In light of what was revealed about their Smart TV’s in the last week you might want to re-think that.

  • cmonnats23

it would be nice if I could keep the knock on feature but still root :/ oh well

    • duke69111

Im rooted and still have the knock on feature. It works really well.

      • cmonnats23

yeah, I meant “..feature but still flash roms…” my bad

  • duke69111

    Yeeeeeeeeh Haaaaaah!

Just kidding. This is good news though. However I am liking the LG skin with the exception of the home screen folders and the lack of the play store button at the top right of the app drawer.

    • MikeCiggy

Nova can fix all of your concerns

      • Bob

If you use Nova you can’t use Knock. Dilemma….

        • ssjnimma

can only use it to wake phone…

          • fiya

or you can read the comments above you, knock-off works fine with almost any current launcher and either tasker or the lock app mentioned above.

        • Scott

You can configure Nova to use a Tasker action to turn the screen off for the double tap gesture. Works just as well as stock.

          • Bob

Mind sharing what you configured in Tasker to accomplish this?

          • Scott

In Tasker I created a new Task (called Screen Lock) and added one System Lock action and saved it. System lock is under Display -> System Lock.

In Nova Settings go to Gestures and Buttons -> Double Tap. Then for the action go to Shortcuts -> Task Shortcut (You need Tasker Installed) and select the Screen Lock option you created. That should be it.

          • ssjnimma

ok sweet! I guess the double tap the notification bar keeps it simple! lol no need for tasker

          • ssjnimma

so under gestures I go to double tap – shortcuts – activities but within that I dont see what I would have to select… any help?

          • Scott

Double Tap -> Shortcuts -> Task Shortcut. Then select the Task you created. You need Tasker installed and set up for this.

        • Rich Robinson

If using Nova, just double-tap the notification bar to turn it off

        • Droid_Junky

This app will work. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock Add double tap gesture in nova settings.

        • Travis H

seriously this gets the most replies in all of the comments…

        • mendy817

You don’t even need tasker. 2 things work:

          1) If you want the actual dbl tap on the screen just download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock and use Nova’s gestures to set that app to load everytime you double tap

          2) or you can just dbl tap the notification bar. easy.

          • JRUIV

I’m not seeing this option to turn the screen off by double tapping the notificatioN bar… I’d like to use it

          • mendy817

you have to download an app (like the one i linked to above) that turns the screen off. then in nova prime’s settings go to “gestures and buttons” and set the double tap gesture to open that app.

        • Ryan

Ya you can… mine works turning it on and off. Don’t know why you’re having problems with it.

      • ssjnimma

except Nova does not support the knock feature to turn the phone off… only to turn it on… which sucks!!! Been a lifer with Nova…

        • MikeCiggy

Maybe you should contact the Nova developer. He has always been great at adding things paying customers want/need

        • William Ku

easy fix. install this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jiubang.goscreenlock.plugin.lockscreen go into settings and set the double tap feature to execute that action. good to go.

          • HarvesterX

I think that’s the one I’m using on CyanogenMod

        • Rich Robinson

If using Nova, just double-tap the notification bar to turn it off.

          • LucasMonroe

            Did not know this. Thanks.

        • AndroidUser00110001

It does with tasker. Create tasked task for screen lock. Then use nova gestures double tap to create shortcut to new task you made for screen lock and double tap works 🙂
