A Picture of the Nexus 5 Again…Just Because It’s Pretty.

nexus 5 official big

Hello again, Nexus 5. We don’t know exactly when you will arrive, but we hope it is soon.

Oh, and Kit Kat by itself.

kit kat home1

On the Moto X for the dreamers.

moto x kit kat

That is all.

  • ChrisI

Why do you guys care if it comes out soon? I thought the purpose for this site is Android-related news for Verizon. At least that’s what I hear all the time.

    • Skittlez

what you hear is the reason this site was started for the droid line on verizon and thats why most users have verizon on this site. but for a couple years now, it’s been just android as a whole. this is probably the best phone on the market when it releases.

    • joejoe5709

Originally DL did stories on Droid related things (including Verizon of course) which expanded to Android related things (including tablets) which expanded to almost anything Google related. They even occasionally do little reviews for the competition and Ron is the resident iPhone expert. As for carriers, I think DL pushes T-Mobile these days more than anything. But half readers of DL are probably still on Verizon with a Galaxy Nexus so that’s why see so much of it in the comments. Despite the slim chances, there are those who still hold faith for an N5 on Verizon. And even then, the N5 is huge news for the carriers who do get it so why not?

  • mydroidphone

hope it stands up to the hype, not like the moto x fail….

    • Jeff

The Moto X wasn’t a fail, just not what the minority of potential buyers hoped it would be.

      • hkklife

I want a Moto X2 on VZW with *minimum* G2 level of specs sometime in Q1 of next year running 4.4. A 5.3″-5.5″ screen, 64GB storage and Maxx-size battery would make it absolutely killer. And the recent update helped but Moto still needs a better camera.

        • joejoe5709

Lol. May I introduce you to the Note 3?

    • Skittlez

what made the moto x such a fail was the retail price. for the contract price people, it wasn’t. but the nexus already shows it’s not a fail

      • joejoe5709

Agree with Jeff. Now that the dust has settled, this was an epic case of over-hyping for a phone that is actually pretty cool.

That said, the Nexus 5 will better that the Moto X in *almost* every way. And if you’re on Verizon, there’s a good chance the Moto X is the closest thing to a Nexus we’ll get this year. I wouldn’t call that a fail at all…

      • John Kiser

People need to realize the retail price was due to the device being built and assembled entirely in the US… That raises costs period. Either we create more jobs in the US and have some stuff released cost more or keep them cheap and lose those jobs…

  • rhymiZ

I love the design and I’m sure I’ll love Kit Kat even more!

heres the Verizon model of the nexus 5

    • muddy46

      HAhahhAHHAHhahahahhaHAHahhahahahAHHAaaa

  • vitriolix

the top and bottom bars being transparent really looks so much better. Can’t wait to see how this looks in most legacy apps

  • Phill_S

Heh, I like the 5 wallpaper, they are carrying on the tradition from the 7 wallpaper in the new N7. Subtle and easy to miss design but really nice

  • grumpyfuzz

Since what happened last night, I can’t stand google not announcing anything. I’m so impatient at this point.

  • pookietookie

So exciting! It’s like the energy we had 2 years ago for another phone — one that had a terrible battery, weak radio, some bloatware, and horrible carrier support:
    http://bit.ly/v3tinf

    • aDROIDfreeworld

Phones made on south Korea typically do have weak radios…

  • chris kilps

did any one notice it says 4:40, haha

    • Skittlez

they do that with every release

  • A.Miller

Is that camera going to be as good as the G2?

  • DanSan

that has to go on my VZW GS4 asap…

  • Genkidama

In a public announcement today, Google unveiled the Nexus 5. What made the event even more noteworthy was the fact that all the board members were their to publicy unveil the device and at the same time give the finger to Verizon.

  • moelsen8

you guys are jonesin’ just as bad as us, huh? :P

  • Paul Hansen

Moto X VZW build so i can just throw it on my MAXX pls :P

  • Jacob Mustin

Am I the only one who is slightly disappointed with the bezel thickness? Sure its smaller than most, but since the phone Is supposedly based on the g2, I was really exited about the g2 bezel thinness sexiness. :-)

    • turdbogls

i think side buttons have SOMETHING to do with it.

and maybe the bezels are just as thin, they just look slightly thicker b/c the screen is smaller.

      • Razball

“and maybe the bezels are just as thin, they just look slightly thicker b/c the screen is smaller.”

Good point I didn’t think of that lol

        • turdbogls

I think I’m wrong (really hope I’m not)
but I kinda assume the side buttons will ad some thickness….its still going to be really narrow coming from what i a musing now (G-nex)

          • Razball

I think it’ll be between motox/g2 and the nexus 4 like a happy medium

    • Ian

The extent to which the Nexus would be based on the G2 started and ended with “made by LG”

    • trwb

The bezel is horrendous. I think they didn’t put a lot of effort in design to keep price down. Ugly IMO

    • joejoe5709

We really need to get off the “based on the LG G2″ bandwagon. At this point, they’re cousins at best like the Galaxy Nexus was with the SGSII. The internals are very similar, but the chassis is different. Do I wish we had an N5 that was a carbon copy of the G2? Sure! But it wouldn’t be $350 either…

As for the bezels, I think they’re fine. It’s right in line with the other Nexus phones and it’s actually smaller than the N4 (and signifcantly shorter than my GNex) despite the larger screen. That’s fine by me!

      • Jacob Mustin

Sure, I totally agree. I’m just wishing! I think those thin bezels make a phone stand out more than just about anything.

    • Liderc

The bottom bezel is actually designed to be larger. It’s because when you handle a device with one hand your thumb naturally rests about 2 inches above the bottom of the phone. So if the bottom bezel was very tiny, you’d have to bend your thumb way down just to hit the navigation keys, so it’s actually a good thing that they’ve done this. I would imagine functionality is much more important than having a tiny bottom bezel.

  • http://google.com/+derekross Derek Ross

Knowing I can’t get the Nexus 5 as a Verizon customer, seeing that image on a white Moto X, what I have right beside me, excites me and pisses me off at the same time. I need a beer. Is it 5pm yet?

    • Gr8Ray

      It’s gotta be 5pm somewhere… ;)

    • Dan

Right there with you. It’s sucks knowing we won’t get it until like March next year if were lucky… ;(

    • http://www.naskaras.com/ Thanassi Karageorgiou

      it’s 5 somewhere lol

  • saint_stephen

Welp, might have to unlock and root my T-Mo HTC One once the 4.4 GPE ROM drops…

    • PhoenixPath

      Won’t we all? :)

    • JMonkeYJ

      check this out:
      http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2358781

I did the full conversion on my TMo HTC One a couple months ago and have been getting the GPE OTA updates :D it’s awesome. and you retain the ability to connect to all TMo networks, so it’s actually superior to the official GPE edition.

You will probably still want to apply the TMo radio updates when they come out.

      • saint_stephen

How is the camera without the HTC software? I know they kept beats audio for sound, but as far as I’ve seen it only incorporates a slightly modified Nexus camera app.

        • JMonkeYJ

it is the stock android camera. frankly, i don’t have a problem with it. especially coupled with the One’s camera i get amazing pictures. that being said, i didn’t keep sense on there long enough to use the camera software much, so i don’t really have an idea what i’m missing. sorry i can’t be more helpful. i can say my pictures are MUCH better than on my Nexus 4, and in some cases even better then my (aging) point and shoot.

        • Vincent Marino

It’s actually said to take just as good of pictures either way. You just get the stock camera UI instead. Shots still come out just as nice.

  • viewthis66

    meh… let’s move one.

  • fakekellex

Google Music for iOS should be mentioned I would think. It was announced earlier that iOS would get a native google music all access app. THANK GOD! I have a work iphone and and iPad that need it.

  • Colton

does the glass cover the earpiece like some speculating with the other press release images? or does this one actually have a cutout? i cant tell lol

  • Miguel Alvarez

Now that’s one smexy ass fone! :p

  • Nick

Dumb question here… What are the chances T-Mobile will offer a subsidized price at launch for those signing new 2-year agreements? Or will the only option be to purchase the phone at the $349 full retail price?

    • Blake

Technically, no chance – T-Mobile doesn’t have contracts anymore (since March). Possible they could offer it as a device but you’d still be paying full retail for the phone – although with the option to spread it out over 24 months. But if the Nexus 4 is any indication it’ll cost more through them than through Google Play (Google Play was $350, T-Mobile was $500). So even if they did it’d still be cheaper to just pay it all upfront – not worth $150 more to finance the phone.

  • Droidzilla

Pretty sure the white one is real. The url for the Nexus 5 they accidentally posted lists it as nexus_5_black_16gb. The Nexus 7, which has no colour choices, doesn’t have “black” in its URL.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Definitely thinking white one at some point. Hopefully it’s at launch so we can choose.

  • ToddAwesome

    Damn you.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Oh Kellen trolling with the best of them. What level of trolling is this? Can we consider this, dare I say… Over 9000?

Should we start a petition to get this phone on VERIZON?

          Challenge Accepted

          • Droidzilla

Dude, awesome job. It’s actually uncanny how accurate your render is.

      • RTrain

That may be fake…not sure the Verizon logos are big enough, I mean you can still see the phone, and further yet no bloatware?…how would I ever know football scores without NFL mobile pre-loaded on my phone?

        • LionStone

Yea but live streaming Thursday Night Football last night to my DNA, where I was at no TV, was pretty sweet :-)

    • zurginator
      • samosa king

This looks ridiculously real and something that Verizon would definitely release.

        • zurginator

          ;)

        • Michael Gillenwalters

Too bad they won’t. $30 TMob plan, here I come.

      • Droid Ronin

Also needs to have the VZ bloatware bundle like VZ Nav, My Verizon Mobile, Backup assistant, etc.

        • zurginator

Thought about it, but couldn’t be arsed to find the icons.

        • Gnex

          I couldn’t help myself…

      • joejoe5709

That’s… not outside the realm of possibility actually.

      • Shaggy723

Wow… I kinda felt the urge to hurl when I looked at this render. It’s too accurate.

      • Gnex

lol This is amazing, puts my renders to shame :p

      • Liderc

I’m fine with the logos on the back, just none on the front. Makes zero sense to put logos on the front of phones where no one sees them but the user. Not quite sure why any manufacturer ever decided to do this as it only makes the device look worse.

        • zurginator

I’ve also always wondered this. I understand the back to an extent – if you’re making a call, they’ll see the brand. I would prefer a brandless phone though – if someone wants to know, I’ll tell them what it is.

But yeah, no front logo is one of the many reasons I like Nexus devices.

        • malcmilli

one could argue the opposite. Not that i like logos on the front. But often times people are looking over other’s shoulders. Their phones may be in cases/hands on the back of the phone covering up the logo. Or when someone puts their phone down on the table they lay it face up.

      • ctk4949

That is why freaking verizon wont get a nexus device!! I hate you verizon!!

    • Adam Truelove

Honestly, I’d take this. At least it’s unlockable and it would have great AOSP ROM support. But no Nexus on Verizon at all makes me sad.

      • joejoe5709

I would too. I dealt with a gimped Nexus for 2 years just fine. Who cares anymore. I just want this phone.

        • Adam Truelove

The only thing gimped about the Gnex on Verizon is the battery. I’ve been running an AOSP ROM on it since last year so I’ve always been just as up to date as any other Nexus. And that’s exactly what I’d do with a Nexus 5 on Verizon too. Day 1 I would unlock it and load a pure stock AOSP ROM.

Only we’re never again see a Nexus on Verizon. :(

    • Pedro

      I love the Home button.

If we can’t brand a physical button, we must access the code to brand the virtual button!
      — VZW

    • Russ

Oh lord don’t give them any ideas!

    • Liderc

I’d be fine if they included the logo as the home button, we could change it in 2 seconds anyway with a launcher or nav changer. Just give us the damn phone Verizon, stop being such punks. I don’t get it, they allow Apple to do their thing, why not let Google?

  • DreamSTi

Looks like a sub-par quality phone.

  • Jeff Helget

… might be saying farewell (and/or eff you) to Verizon and switching to T-Mobile for this… hope T-Mobile’s coverage is better in the Twin Cities than it used to be….

    • PhoenixPath

I live in New Prague and work in Lakeville. T-Mob is fine from New Prague up to Plymouth. I get LTE in NP, Lakeville, Eagan, and Plymouth (the places I spend most of my time here)

Shouldn’t be too much of a problem, but keep the VZW line until you’ve thoroughly tested your service/device on TMob. That’s what I did (14 day return period).

      • Jeff Helget

Hmmmmm… good thinkin’. I live in the north suburbs. The LTE coverage map T-Mobile shows makes it look like the coverage is fairly adequate at my often-visited locales, but you can never really know until you try it.

        • PhoenixPath

Had a G’Nex on VZW, kept getting dropped calls and data on the way to and from work. Contract was up and the One was out so I ran over to TMob and paid my $99.

2 days later (after testing on the trip to/from work), I called VZW and dropped the line like a brick.

Slowly moving over the rest of the family as the lines become available.

          • ynksbsbll2

Just curious, were you able to port your current number over to T-Mobile during your testing (without screwing up your Verizon line)?

          • PhoenixPath

            Pfft…

That’s what Google Voice is for, silly. ;-)

(I’ll never take an email address from my ISP, just as I will never take a phone number from my cell provider. Use a Google voice number and gmail/yahoo/msn/etc…that way you never have to worry about porting…anything.)

          • jstew182

I tested out t-mobile when they had the Nexus 4 on fire sale…I just got a prepaid account to test out their service compared to verizon’s with my gnex…then after deciding I was fine with it, I ported my number over from verizon. I know its not ideal but after getting used to carrying around 2 phones it was nice to just say eff you verizon and make the switch. I dont regret it at all.

I really want it. So nice to finally be excited again for an Android OS update!

    • Open1Your1Eyes0

Haven’t been so excited for an Android update since ICS. :)

      • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

I was pretty excited for Jelly Bean, but definitely not as much as I was for ICS. Just the whole new UI and feel of everything. It’s a great feeling. Kinda like what iOS users got with iOS 7.

        • MichaelFranz

Agreed, while we arent getting that big UI update we are getting enough subtle changes and a nice looking device to boot. Im hoping for some more quality features built in, the hangouts integration, new camera UI/functions, whatever tap and pay in inclusive of besides the obvious

          • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

Exactly. This should be a pretty big update overall for Android as a whole.

          • Paul Hansen

Agreed. I’m curious to see what newfangled insanity that comes packed into 5.0 down the road… or will they just tease me again with 4.5…

          • GentlemanScholar

Do you think my Verizon Galaxy Nexus will get 4.4 the day after its announced? Ha. I couldn’t say that with a straight face.

          • Michael Gillenwalters

I installed AOKP 4.3 and my Toro is finally usable again. Geez, what a waste of a Nexus, stupid Verizon.

          • zurginator

We won’t see a giant UI change again for a few years at least – Developers would throw an absolute fit over it. On top of that it would destroy the unity that is FINALLY beginning to be felt in apps.

Even iOS7, despite being redone, still has the same guidelines…. it’s just flat.

          • ManBearPig618

Well….I think you can tweak the UI without changing the design language.

          • zurginator

            That’s exactly what they’ve been doing. :P

          • ManBearPig618

Tweak was the wrong word. You could significantly alter the UI of ICS-JC-KK without really changing the design language.

          • zurginator

Significantly altering it is what hurts devs though – because by extension they have to significantly alter their apps.

        • ManBearPig618

ICS was an epic update. JB was great as well. I’m thinking this one slots in between them in terms of epicness.

        • angermeans

Yes sir! It’s an exciting time for both platforms.

        • michael arazan

I wan’t excited about JB until I got JB and realized what a phone could really do, switching user accounts is great, and having a dash board on the lock screen too. I can’t Imagine what is going to be in 4.4 though, JB is pretty great at 4.2

Sucks I have a GS3 as a replacement from Asurion for my GNex, went from 4.2 to 4.1 so I lost features and gained a bunch of touchwiz features I don’t need or want, but did get a bigger battery and a slight step up in performance.

    • 1bad69z28

I am right with you buddy :)

    • joejoe5709

Agreed. This one feels pretty special. If this were a house ICS was the foundation, JB is the framing and plumbing, and Kit Kat will be the finishing touches. I really think Kit Kat will bring some feeling of completion to the ICS/JB era. Some of the elements like Google Now and lockscreen widgets are great but feel unfinished or underutilized. Time to fill in the framework!

      • Adam Truelove

Android will never be finished. It will never plateau like iOS. We may think KK is the finishing touches until we see what they come up with next year.

        • 4g63mark

Exactly why custom ROMS are so valuable. They make Android better until Google cherry pics their features and puts them in the OS

        • John Kiser

They meant the finishing touches to what ICS/JB was trying to do not exactly that KK is the finishing touches for android.
