Nexus 5 Appears on Google Play! Starting Price of $349 (Updated)

nexus 5

Sooooo, the Nexus 5 is now showing up on Google Play (name now confirmed). Tough to tell if this is an early mistake or something is about to go down officially. The price shows that it starts at $349 and there is a direct link to the phone (which is not live yet) that shows it will be a 16GB model. There could be a 32GB model as well, but that info isn’t available.

Update:  And here is the mega-high-res version.

nexus 5 huge

Update 2:  The Nexus 4 is now completely gone.

Screen Shot 2013-10-17 at 6.29.13 PM

Update 3: We should point out that the quote under the listing says “Capture the everyday and the epic in fresh new ways.”

Update 4: And the Nexus 4 has returned.

Screen Shot 2013-10-17 at 6.47.32 PM

Update 5:  Google appears to have closed up shop now. There are now no real remaining traces of the phone. Did they mean to do that? Probably not. The question now is, are we going to see an announcement tomorrow without any sort of event? If not, how big of a screw-up was that?

  • triumphtriple

That bottom bezel looks stupid big :/

  • Jim Elliott

I just looked and don’t see the Nexus 5 at all.

    • Nayners

This all happened last night. Google has since removed the N5..

  • InclusiontoInnovation

Well, I am on Verizon with a Galaxy Nexus …. have suspended my cellular …. been using Google Hangouts with friends …. waiting to get this phone and use Aio Wireless pre-paid

  • J.r. Coffie

    I can’t get excited because my carrier(Verizon)
    will NEVER carry this phone.

    • Skittlez

you can always get excited for new devices.

    • Shaggy723

Simple solution – switch carriers. I live in a rural area and thought the same thing about leaving Verizon. I left, purchased a gsm Nexus (gsm truly is a superior technology by the way), and now I’m with AT&T saving money every month on one of their prepaid plans and could not be happier with the coverage. And, I will purchase this phone once it’s released and probably visit this site less because my phone gets updated on time and I get everything I want.

      • J.r. Coffie

I used AT&T before and switched back to Verizon because where I live they have spotty coverage but you doing make an interesting point about GSM and will need to do my homework before I give up my unlimited data & text sand LTE for $70

        • Shaggy723

Totally understand as I’m sure many are in the same situation. I will say that there are a lot of folks out there that could easily make the switch to At&t without noticing any difference in coverage, and be rid of Verizon.

  • chris125

I’m on verizon so I care more about 4.4 for my nexus 7 since we all know this wont be on verizon.

    • duckmanbill

      PMA!

  • Rupert Halloway

    What a bargain!

  • findjaysee

That is one beautiful device! Brand new At&t Moto X (that made me convert from Verizon), you are officially in danger! Haha.

  • schlanz

I know everyone is doubting that this beast will come to VZW, and I definitely have my doubts as well, but there is one thing that I think could make it happen.

    And that is Edge.

Verizon is driving to get more Edge sales and this is the kind of phone that could really facilitate that. Even if you have a bunch of people buying outright, full retail, and continuing their unlimited data, respective of their entire customer base it’s a pretty tiny portion of people. Enough people are on their tiered data now that I don’t think they are on a witch-hunt to get the rest of us.

What I could see happening is the Nexus 5 perhaps won’t be offered at a subsidized price, so it’s either Edge or full retail, or if it is offered at a subsidy, it won’t be a big one; like $199 on contract. It would be win-win for VZW. They are either getting more Edge customers, or the subsidy they give is drastically smaller than what it normally is.

I guess we will learn soon enough.

    • HerbieDerb

      Cool story bra

    • aDROIDfreeworld

That is am awwwwfully big stretch… But I’m hope you’re right :-)

  • Joshua Bailey

I could gaze at that beauty all day long…can’t wait to buy a few of these. :)

  • Daniel Flores

Wish I was able to get excited with everyone else. I remember getting all excited for the Galaxy Nexus. But, I’m totally happy with my G2 and unlimited data on Verizon. Plus with the wife’s job, we get a big discount that saves me about $48/mo. Still, I’d like to play with one, and I’m anxious to see what Kit Kat will bring us. Just hope LG doesnt’ take too long to update us.

    • grumpyfuzz

be prepared, because your lg g2 on verizon won’t get the update for about 6-12 months.

  • AndrewScottRox

I, for one, welcome our new Nexus overlord.

  • Javier

I almost had a heart attack

  • Dorian Brooks

So LTE jacks up the price by a Benji. Nestle/KitKat couldn’t of kicked in more so for a more modest 50-70 dollar price increase?

    • duckmanbill

? The N5 has more than just LTE compared to N4. I agree with you though, the price is $50 too high.

      • Dorian Brooks

I didn’t have time to write an in-depth response listing all the spec enhancements. The crux was/is I thought Google was going the affordable, but not cheap, route, & a $100 price increase somewhat undermines that policy.

    • Vincent Marino

It’s the same price as the Nexus 4 when it came out (for each 16GB model).

  • Dorian Brooks

Clever marketing you got going there Google. Well played.

  • Guy Meatdrapes

Does this mean $399 for the 32gb model? Please

    • Larizard

      that’d be HEAVEN

    • Malik

That face from Reggie is going to be in my nightmares tonight

  • Eduardo Cruz

What carriers can you use this phone on? virgin mobile?

  • Josh Martin

    seriously…ugliest phone ever.

    • Jonathan Isenberg

Not sure if trolling, or completely serious…

      Down voting for good measure…

  • Jacob Svonavec

$349 would be a sweet price point.

Ok DL community and staff, we should have a poll on which connectors we would like to see used as a standard on phones, I myself after spending sometime with it would have to say that the lightning connector from Apple is hands down the best/most reliable connector currently used. Lets have a poll because I am tired of replacing my micro usb connectors.

    thanks! Have a good weekend.

    • BobbyG

why do you replace your micro usb connectors?

  • DanSan

    yes…

  • YinzerRob

i still can’t believe lg managed to produce an attractive looking phone…

    • Adam Truelove

Their flip phones were very nice back in the day.

  • MK17

Can not wait until December to get off of Verizon!

  • Adam Truelove

Dang, just $50 too expensive. Give me an 8GB version for $280

    • mike dunham

You realize it is about $250 cheaper than any other flagship device.

      • Adam Truelove

This is a Nexus, you can’t compare it to a regular flagship phone. I expected less. What price was the Nexus 4 16 GB when it launched?

EDIT: Nevermind, the N4 was $350 for the 16GB at launch too. So this is right on pace. I guess what I want is an 8 GB for less. 16 GB is too much for me.

        • JRomeo

the Nexus4, 16GB when it launched was $349

        • Jeff

It sounds like what you really should want is a higher paying job.

          • Sean Bello

            THIS! lol

        • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

          Stop being stupid

        • hkklife

I hear AT&T has a really sweet 8GB iPhone 4S for ”free” that should suit your needs perfectly. Snapdragon 800 andand only 8GB storage? GTFO. I would be thrilled if they only offered the N5 in 32Gb & 64GB variants. Games and HD video recordings are only getting bigger by the day.

  • panicswhenubered

I’m seriously considering dumping my week old Note3 and just going back to a Nexus device.

    • Razball

Same here its a great device lol but I just can’t help it.

    • JRomeo

Why did you get a Note3 in the first place if you knew the Nexus would be better?

      • panicswhenubered

lol. I did not spend $600 on the Note3 and Gear watch knowing the Nexus would be better.

I’m having a hard time getting used to the size of the Note3. Plus, I cannot stand the slight interface lag, even with Nova launcher installed. There’s just too much OEM fluff pre-installed on this thing.

  • Gregg O’Connell

nexus 5 is already gone :(

  • Pure Lover

Hurry up already. My Verizon Gnex is taking a dump. Must stay pure OS with no overlay!

    • hkklife

Moto X or the new Droids? Still far, far better than Touchwiz, SenseSense, or LG’s skin. Those are still your best options if you want to remain on VerizonVerizon.

  • donkeykong85

The positive thing is that is showed it was definitely coming to verizon……..if i keep telling myself this it might come true:)

  • JohanV

Since the first video unveiling the Kit-Kat statue Google has “accidentally” been showing the phone.. Publicity Stunt?

P.S: Here is an image to get more likes.. Publicity stunt? You tell me. :D

    • Ian Smith

bet there’s so many stretch marks on those puppies

      • Greyhame

        Talk about glass half full…

        • Ian Smith

          :[

      • Robert Macri

        Don’t ruin my dreams.

      • Sean Bello

people don’t care about stretch marks. all we know is was either big and got small or it was small and got big!

      • Me

        Seriously?

        • Ian Smith

no, they’re probably absolutely perfect in every way

  • jbdan

I got up 2 hours earlier couldn’t sleep per the excitement, so glad the kid in me lives on =]

    • nivek31

I couldn’t sleep either because I wanted to make sure it didn’t become available while I was sleeping. Sad but that’s ok.

  • anezarati

Looks like someone made that in paint lol

  • Keith0606

Anyone seen the new kitkat twitter post this morning, there is a picture of a dock into the water and it’s shaped like a T. And T must stand for “Today” which means official announcement today!

    • Reginald Jefferson

Ya know what else T stands for? Three. Half-Life Three confirmed.

      • RavnosCC

I beg to differ, T-Moble exclusive… sorry guys.

    • Iyvin Benjamin

The first wood looks like 1 and the other looks like 2 and the dock is a T that means it’s today at 12 EST

  • IrishSid

Shame it has featureless stock android on it. Oh well, I suppose you can fill it with tons of 3rd party bloatware so you can get a bit of functionality from it. Good job fanboys!

    • Reginald Jefferson

2/10. Weak troll effort. Try again next time. :)

      • Chris

        angry much?

        • Reginald Jefferson

Yes, because the smiley in my previous post exudes all kinds of anger and hate.

    • jbdan

That’s what we like stock Android in a svelte package for a reasonable price, gotta love it….unless of course you’ve joined forces with the dark side :( did you?

    • Sean Bello

if you install it, it’s inherently not bloatware because you want it on there. now. get back under your bridge.

  • Sanjay Negi

Whoops Nexus 5 will be here in a week and i hope that will surprise all of us.

    http://www.91mobiles.com/google-nexus-5-16gb-price-in-india

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

91 mobiles? I wouldn’t even click that link

  • droidlover

Hate these leaks but I so want the new Nexus! I hope it will be soon available. I got the 4 and even if the gap between these 2 models is not that relevant, well, I’m gonna get the N5 for sure ’cause I usually upgrade my phones as soon as the new comes out. I actually spend a lot of money on technology, that’s why I’m trying to add my items on unioncy.com, a web app that is helping to manage better my “gadgets investments”. Can’t wait to get the N5.

  • Patrick Bateman

    please have active notifications!

    • Reginald Jefferson

No Samoled screen so no Active Notifications. I think Moto may keep that as a hardware exclusive anyway as a way of differentiating themselves from the competition. Similar to Knock Knock being an LG thing or multi-windows on Samsung.

  • http://petervideos.com/ Peter Mansour

Will there be a Google Edition Nexus 5?

    • Chris

this IS a google edition. its a nexus after all

  • BJRCollins

    Update 6?

    • DJ SPY

      ??

      • BJRCollins

It’s a screenshot that continues the authors updates. They took down even the picture of the 5 and returned to what was up before. Self-explanatory.

  • Colton

    my anticipation level..is over 9000!

  • bob

Yup, and the rumors with the 3000mah battery, 13mp camera, $299 price……ALL WRONG! now i’m sad :(

    • jbdan

A top tier hardware spec’d phone for nearly $300 less than any comparable device AND sporting a pure aosp experience. Hmm sounds pretty good to me

      • bob

the price would most likely have been 299 if they kept the 8gb option, but then again 8gb is quite irrelevant. I

    • GiantJay

How do you know the specs are wrong? All it says it starting at $349.

  • cgmartin33

I was seriously going to leave VZW for this when its comes out…but this morning I ran this…

    • bob

      I HATE YOU

    • Reginald Jefferson

      Hot damn that’s fast.

    • cns2007

Are you in New York? A friend of mine got a similar result.

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Depending on where you are you’ll see similar speeds on At&t… and those speeds won’t last long anyway

    • Pengwn

I was seriously going to leave VZW for this when its comes out…but this morning I ran this… and now I know I am going to leave.

EDIT: Chicago, IL with full bars of 4G.

  • [A]dri[A]n

I really want to wanna buy this phone, but that battery D: I sure hope the processor and screen don’t tear that battery apart… Lol

    • TheDrunkenClam

Love the phone but really wish it had removable battery.
I have 3 batteries with my Gnex.
Also, batteries don’t last forever. They can’t simply be recharged an infinite number of times.

      • [A]dri[A]n

I would have absolutely been fine with a larger Nexus 5 to pack that 3,000mAh LG G2 battery in there.

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

The 2300 MAH in the HTC ONE with Sense lasts all day no problem. With the GPE model lasts longer with stock. I don’t think battery is that much of a big deal these days. If it is. Go external

  • pd240

I really like what google is doing with the nexus program. Low priced unlocked phone with high end specs and stock android. Glad to see they kept the aggressive price points.

  • TheDrunkenClam

I know this is a little off topic, but I want to leave Verizon and go with Tmobile for this phone…. I’m shopping their individual plans online and i noticed there is indeed an Unlimited (data) for $70.00….
Is this TRULY unlimited, 4G LTE data? WITHOUT ever being throttled?

    • zurginator

It’s true. The throttled plans quite explicitly state when you get throttled (200mb, 2gb, 5gb depending on plans).

      • TheDrunkenClam

I live in Washington DC and make trips back home to visit family in Columbus Ohio.
When I mapped my rout on their coverage map, it showed “service” (shown in pink) all the way there. Now does this simply mean phone service? Or will I have data all the way there.
As it is with Verizon now, there are areas along the way where I don’t have data, and I’m okay with that. But I definitely need phone service in case I broke down. If I didn’t have phone service that would be a deal breaker for me.

        • cmbeid

Same here. Coverage map shows great TMobile service where I live, 2G where my parents live. As it is, I usually only have about 3 bars of service on Verizon. The no contact thing is very appealing

        • Andrew Bockus

If they’re showing service, then you’re probably going to at least have phone service. I say this because I drove from Florida to Illinois and the whole way I had service with TMobile (prepaid, so no roaming…I was trying them out at the time). By service, I mean that I had 2G a lot during random parts of the trip through the forest and hills parts, but I could nearly always make a call. Hope this helps. (Plus, on their actual plans – non prepaid – they include roaming, so you should be good)

    • JRomeo

I’ve been using tmobile’s truly unlimited 4G plan on the Nexus4, its HSPA+, but LTE is included whenever they launch that. no throttling. its great!

      • TheDrunkenClam

Don’t they have LTE in certain cities?

        • JRomeo

Yes, they recently activated speedy LTE in Orlando, Florida. unfortunately for me, i’m too far south of Orlando.

        • JRomeo

and YES. its truly unlimited with no throttling, I am on that plan now.

  • nick rodriguez

hate to be THAT guy… but satisfied with my iPhone 5s. had the gnex but needed a change.

    • Razball

I was for a little about 2 weeks then got the note 3 and now just waiting for the no lol each nexus has kept me satisfied the longest lol

    • Liderc

That tiny screen is unusable not to mention the OS…

    • Tim242

If you were really happy with the 5S, you wouldn’t be here

      • Razball

        God point lol

    • Vanquishgc

      If you had a Note 3, a G2, or Moto X you wouldn’t be saying that…

    • flosserelli

      Good. You can keep it.
The only iphone worth having is a jailbroken one. Hope you don’t get bored while waiting for that.

    • Razma

did you have the verizon gnex? cause that would explain alot

  • Liderc

I may finally be switching from Verizon. This thing is too good to pass up. If the camera is nice it’ll be a must buy.

    • cmbeid

I am in the same boat as you. Tmobile doesn’t look too bad – coverage is good around me but drops sharply once you leave “city limits.”

      • hoosiercub88

I think “drops sharply once you leave”city limits.”” is putting it quite lightly.

Friends don’t let friends use EDGE.

    • Vanquishgc

yeah but Nexus cameras unfortunately disappoint. GNex was not so good….

  • http://www.techmantis.net/ Minja Miketa

Might not mean much but notice the hangouts app was put in the dock…maybe it will be our new SMS.

  • miri

Ever time I think I’ve quelled the desire to unnecessarily upgrade my phone there’s a new Nexus 5 leak.

  • Joshua Jones

I’ve waited all my life for this.

    • Franklin Ramsey

Then you need to get out more.

  • Jesse

Dang, Ron mightve been right about there not being a big show release

  • TheDrizzle

Looks like the only question left is… where is the headphone jack?

    • Joshua Jones

Top. Kinda like the Nexus 4

    • Joshua Jones

Look at the photo that shows the back. Its at the top right of that picture.

      • TheDrizzle

What was wrong with the bottom headphone jack? Why the switcheroo?

        • zurginator

I understood with the N4, as it’s built off the Optimus G…. but here it makes no sense, the G2 had it on the bottom.

  • ROB

Ironic that VZW put the MAXX at $199 this morning and now this…so many people know but no confirmation on the date or final specs.

    • http://www.MikeSimpkins.com/ Michael Simpkins

I had a simiiar thought that Verizon lowered the price before a possible Nexus 5 release…..I can hope and dream right?
