Nexus 5 Appears on Google Play! Starting Price of $349 (Updated)

nexus 5

Sooooo, the Nexus 5 is now showing up on Google Play (name now confirmed). Tough to tell if this is an early mistake or something is about to go down officially. The price shows that it starts at $349 and there is a direct link to the phone (which is not live yet) that shows it will be a 16GB model. There could be a 32GB model as well, but that info isn’t available.

Update:  And here is the mega-high-res version.

nexus 5 huge

Update 2:  The Nexus 4 is now completely gone.

Update 3: We should point out that the quote under the listing says “Capture the everyday and the epic in fresh new ways.”

Update 4: And the Nexus 4 has returned.

Update 5:  Google appears to have closed up shop now. There are now no real remaining traces of the phone. Did they mean to do that? Probably not. The question now is, are we going to see an announcement tomorrow without any sort of event? If not, how big of a screw-up was that?

  • Can’t for this to come to Ve- oh wait

  • johntb

does anybody have a spec sheet to compare the N5 with the G2?

  • Taylor Abrahamson

So I think I’m going to leave verizon for this… 0_o

    • jbdan

Much better reason than I had. I just left because I got tired of their ego. Do It!

  • gbenj

    Tomorrow’s KitKat post!!!

    • jbdan

      /still the 21st then ehh?/

    • DanSan

      best comment. ever.

    • palomosan

I’m going to make this and the high resolution picture of the phone my wallpaper until Google come clean and announces the *********** phone.

    • makivelli

      Love it.

  • zombiewolf115

    its already to late

    • an0nim0

      Where’s Iate?

  • trwb

Cool chin bezel bro. Nice waste of space. Wish every Nexus looked like the galaxy nexus.

    • Jeff

How do you know it’s wasted? Do you assume the phone is hollow in the bottom? They need space for internal parts, not everything can be screen.

    • Allan

Notification light and dual speakers are down there.

      • JRomeo

I don’t remember seeing dual speakers down there.

        • Allan

Yup, on the bottom of the phone on each side of the USB port.

    • Liderc

It’s done on purpose. If you look at the way a phone rests in your hand, a super thin bezel at the bottom would make your thumb not line up with the navigation keys. A larger bezel positions your thumb at the correct position to hit navigation keys without having to bend it downward.

    • zurginator

You do realize this phone has shaved somewhere from 5-10mm off the bottom bezel of the Galaxy Nexus, right?

    • joejoe5709

Yeah I don’t mind it. It’s smaller than the N4 with a larger screen soooo

Plus it helps with ergonomics. It’s all good!

      • trwb

Yea for the price it’s not really that big of a deal. They could have utilized the chin bezel better though. My S3 has the same size bezel but puts buttons on it, in effect freeing up more room for the screen.

        • JRomeo

if you watch a full screen video, you won’t see those buttons.

          • trwb

Yea in full screen video. They are there wasting space other times. Thankfully one can change the nav bar height with custom roms, or hide them all together. I have had a GNex and Nex 7, and on screen buttons are a love hate thing with me. One loses around an inch of space on this phone due to bezel and buttons, bad design imo.

  • josh

it might be obvious but just pointing it out there the wallpaper its a 5

  • eazy

How can such simplicity be so freakin sexy

  • Caveman

LOVE my G2, but wish it would have taken a few style cues from the Nexus 5 designers in the next room. “Normal” buttons, what looks to be a nice feel to the back cover, and not so square. Just a few things that would take my G2 from great to perfect (for me at least).

  • joejoe5709

This was definitely intentional. We’ll see what tomorrow brings but likely just to hold us over the weekend.

    Oh and… It’s gorgeous!!

  • jadeveon da destroyer

Glad i droped verizon and unlimited data 2 years ago for at&t and 4 gigs of lte. I actually might give my wife my gold iphone5s and sell her 5 for this phone will wait for a review.

  • Marcus C

LG should hire a new design department. The software and price is the only reason I’d buy this thing. Ugaleeeee lol

    • Jeff

I like it, looks nice and clean. I definitely like it more than the Nexus 4, which I never got because of the glass back and I didn’t care for the silver accent. Besides, Google wants their current Nexus devices to look similar, which they now will.

  • Dann

Both nexus 4 are “Out of inventory”

    • Alex Boro

It’s been like that for a while now…

      • Dann

Dang thought there was somthing there lol

  • OneForTheGoodDays

Also… can I get that wallpaper?

  • OneForTheGoodDays

I’d like to think I have the patience and the wherewithall to post this in EVERY SINGLE droid-life article from here on in…. but once should be enough…. Hangouts is the most inconvenient and confusing way to skin chats. I want talk back.

    • an0nim0

I’d settle for the ability to search Hangouts on the phone; that’s been broken since day 1 and there’s been no indication that they intend to fix it.

  • trophynuts

    seems on purpose to me.

  • rthvk

Let me just throw some gasoline onto the fire – the link points to a “Nexus 5 16GB Black” – if I remember correctly color is not an aspect of the URL for Nexii, so I’m willing to bet we’ll see a white version at launch or very soon after. Just my two cents.

  • josh

dont worry for all you verizon guys out there it will be on verizon just 3g and lte advanced

    • Dann

      We can only hope.

    • joejoe5709

I’m willing to wait another six months for a VoLTE Nexus 5 on VZW.

      • Justin Appler

You’ll wait a hell of a lot longer than that, sorry to say.

    • josh

they said in the fcc there was support for band 4 and 13

  • Lucas French

    I can’t wait. 🙂

    • Patrick Bateman

      LOL straight talk ????

you can open 2 emails and 5 minutes of pandora and then they cut your data off…

  • crazed_z06

  • Ian Smith

it doesn’t matter if they meant to do that or not – how is this even close to being a screw up? THIS IS ALREADY THE MOST. LEAKED. PHONE. OF. ALL. TIME.

  • dannyWHITE

    I called it! $349!!!

    • Jeff

You and a lot of other people.

      • dannyWHITE

I like to think I was the first 😉

  • Bowen9284

If I zoom enough it’s like I have Kitkat on my phone!

  • Liderc

Most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. God, it just makes me hate Verizon even more for fking it all up.

  • Jeff

Well, I think that tears it, I’ll be snagging the 32gb version (assuming there is one) of the Nexus 5 over the Moto X. Not that easy of a decision though, since the Moto X is pretty excellent, just not excellent enough to pay more money for when I also wouldn’t get timely updates, and don’t know how long the updates would even last before the phone is abandoned.

    • donkeykong85

thats my problem with the moto x as well. updates will likely last a year then dropped and not sure what kind of support it will get from the root community as only nexus devices really seem to last long there.

      • an0nim0

Which is ironic, since Nexus devices are the least in need of long-term support from the community.

        • donkeykong85

unless you are on verizon. i dont think the gnex will ever get 4.3.

          • an0nim0

It’s already well established, there’s no such thing as a Nexus device on Verizon. :-

          • Destroythanet

There’s at least one Nexus 7 with unlimited data on Verizon. 😉

          • an0nim0

With updates that aren’t curated by Verizon? I’m not holding my breath.

          • JRomeo

he’s referring to the Nexus7 which was released a few months ago. just pop-in your Verizon LTE sim-card, and you’ll have unlimited data assuming your sim card has it enabled. and it receives updates not curated by verizon because its a Nexus from the google play store.

        • turdbogls

very true. this (my Gnex) is the only phone i haven’t felt the NEED to ROM. I am on stock 4.3.1 right now, and loving it. I do miss SOME ROM features, but i can live without most of them.

  • Morbid138

    Announce it!!!!!!

  • dannyWHITE

  • johntb

as one who is staying on VZW, should I go with the Moto X?? the G2?? or wait to see if the N5 comes out on VZW which I know it won’t DARN YOU VERIZON!!

    • Facing the same decision, still haven’t eliminated HTC ONE from the mix though…

    • donkeykong85

i am sticking with my gnex for now as its running super fast on aokp

    • NexusMan

Wait until the Nexus is announced. I’m in the same boat as you. I’m going with either the Nexus or the Moto X, depending on what the Nexus has to offer.

    • joejoe5709

I’m thinking G2 but Moto X is close second. Maybe hold out to see what 2014 brings.

      • johntb

part of me thinks, “yeah, wait a little longer and see what happens…” but my gosh, I’ve held out to upgrade since March….. I CAN’T STAND IT ANYMORE! =D

    • Allan

Why stay with Verizon? Abandon ship!

      • johntb

I’ve been considering that for over a year now…

        • Allan

Same. But I think I’m finally leaving this year.

  • Ryan Christopher

hey look verizon got one 😉

    • CaptainHowdy13

      It’s missing all the bloatware

      • Ryan Christopher

that will come in the 4.4.1 update from verizon

        • toomuchgame441

I guess that update will arrive in 2015

          • Mayoo

Yup, and with 4.1 – updates to come “shortly”

      • Col_Angus

Where’s my VZ Navigator?! I can’t leave home without it!

        • billyd

All the Navigators are workin for Obama Care…..

          • michael arazan

More like the Veterans affairs office with it’s 3 million+ in back logs

    • NexusMan

LOL. Good job. I like that one!

      • Blue Sun

It doesn’t use Band 13 so it won’t use 4G LTE. Hence, why the 4G LTE branding was left off.

        • Reginald Jefferson

I feel like a “whoosh” should be inserted here…

    • donkeykong85

wow so it is confirmed! awesome!

    • Plazmic Flame

Someone leaked the minutes from the minutes of a design meeting!

  • Robert Landrum

    Please come in white.

  • That Guy

    Sexy, but am i the only one worried that the rear camera seems to stick out a bit? possibly get broken or scratch the glass on the camera? ;

    Might still get it :p

    • Allan

It doesn’t stick out any more than any other camera on a phone, unless you’re not looking at the same pictures…

  • Nayners

Nexus 4 shows out of stock for me! Choooo chooooooo!

  • Ant

Thank You Google For Bringing Truth In A World Full Of Hpyebeasting

  • 18footJ

    Got one, thanks!

Had to refresh countless times, though.

    • Nayners

      • an0nim0

OMG guys, just got mine – it’s SOOPER k00l!

  • Jawboe

I have been a verizon customer customer forever and plan on switching to ATT for this phone. Will ATT typically sell Nexus phones directly or will need to buy from google directly and try to start new service with ATT. Do they allow you to bring your own device?

    • Tim242

You can get month to month at&t post paid, but all they offer now are the shared plans.

  • jbdan

    #@&=*@$!! Heck yeaaahhh!

  • Philip J. Fry
  • Nick Klenchik

Less than an hour later: http://imgur.com/hxFQjvk

    • kixofmyg0t

What kind of laptop do you have?

      • Nick Klenchik

This was from my 6 year old Dell laptop I have as a house computer. I use an Asus UX31A

  • George264

So the Kit-Kat countdown pictures streak is now ruined, dang it

  • NexusMan

Damn…I’ve never been a Nexus 4 fan, but look how bad it looks in that slot after just seeing the Nexus 5 there!

  • Brian Menius

Aw naw hell naw. We just got mega-trolled by Google.

  • wiseguyk

So did anyone ever get past the spinning arrow when it was still up?

    • NexusMan

When it 1st went up, it briefly linked to a 16gb listing.

  • anezarati

the gmail icon is different too

  • donkeykong85

and if this comes to verizon i will buy. if not i am sticking with my gnex.

    • joejoe5709

Thinking about G2. Likely though? Me too.

  • grumpyfuzz

Nexus 5 is gone from play store. Google, you must announce it now.

  • NexusMan

LOL. And now the Nexus 5 has been replaced by the Nexus 4 on the Play Store!

  • XxROCKxX

Decisions decisions. Would you consider this a downgrade/upgrade from an LG G2?

    • joejoe5709

Specs wise? Slight downgrade. As an awesome all around great phone that’ll last you two years? Can’t be beat.

    • Jeff

Upgrade in that it’s pure Android instead of Android with piles of junk on top of it.

  • Jason Blomgren

Guess what’s going to be announced tomorrow. I can’t imagine it not becoming official.

  • Geary Saddler

I want this to come out off contract for sprint or I’ll scream…..

  • The link taken down was once again Google trying to tease us 🙁
