The Droid Life Show: Episode 39

dl logo show2

The crew is back at its normal time and place tonight for The Droid Life Show, and we have a good one for you. We will be going over all of the new Android 4.4 and Nexus 5 goodies that have hit the web, in addition to HTC’s announcement of the One Max and Nike’s distaste for the Android ecosystem. On top of that, we will cover the staff’s favorite apps and games of the week, so be sure to tune in.

The show kicks off around 6:00PM Pacific (9:00PM Eastern). A live video broadcast will be embedded below closer to the start of the show. Until then, feel free to hang out in the Droid Life IRC room.

Nexus 5 or Moto X? which also means, keep unlimited on verizon or switch to at&t?

  • Brandon Hoffman

How does droid life employ a apple fan boy??

    • Jeff

Counterpoint? I don’t mind it for having that other perspective on things, but I do find Ron kind of irritating.

  • MikeSaver

I LOVE THE DROID LIFE SHOW AND IM NOT EMBARASSED TO ADMIT IT, EXCEPT FOR IN SOCIAL SITUATIONS.

  • Yaniv

So…yeah….iRon ruined the show again…Too bad.

  • George Colyer

I thought Ron brought up a good point about the relevance of Nexus devices. They haven’t been top must have devices. Their off contact prices are what they are known for now. My last two devices have been Nexuses. Stock Android is nice but boring. I don’t even like using my Nexus 7 anymore due to stutter and lag. And my Galaxy Nexus got old and tired after only six months. I started with T-Mobile and got the LG Optimus F6 as a temporary phone until the Nexus 5 comes out but considering other phones. I think LG’s skin on this phone isn’t bad at all. I’ll wait for the reviews on the Nexus 5.

    • Jeff

Stock Android is only as boring as you yourself allow it to be.

  • me

Thanks for the show guys. Entertaining as always.

  • TimXer

i don’t think Google cares about the avg joe who doesn’t already know why they’d want a nexus phone…i think they speak to the geek who already knows why they want it

    • michael arazan

A lot of average joe’s bought the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, including myself. I think the Galaxy Nexus really pushed up the Nexus brand being on all carriers with millions being sold.

    IM BACK GUYS.

    • ReturnOfTheMack

      The bearded one has returned.

    • tomn1ce

      Poor cat…

my Aunty Anna got cream Dodge Challenger SRT8 Core only from

        • Gnex

Suck a fat one you dirty prostitute.

    • Thomas

Thank God, now if we could only get rid if Ron more people would watch the show.

      • Tim242

Yeah, he was being an argumentative jerk tonight.

        • Thomas

I talked myself into giving the show a second chance, bad move. I logged on right when he & Tim were talking about Nexus devices. I asked myself…”why, why did I log on.”

          • Tim242

Yeah, the audacity to talk about what warrants a Nexus upgrade. He uses an iPhone, which rarely ever warrants an upgrade.

          • Thomas

Which is why I don’t understand why a guy who uses an iPhone, doesn’t seem to care for Android in general, & writes maybe 1 article a month for DL is on the DL Show on a weekly basis. It just doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t have anything personal against Ron, I just don’t understand Kellen’s decision to have him on.

          • Tim242

I totally agree. I couldn’t care less which phone he uses. He makes it clear that he thinks Android is inferior. He just doesn’t fit the mold for this site/show. His attitude will do him in. He was such a jerk tonight.

          • michael arazan

Can’t believe he said the Nexus 5 isn’t anything special.

          • Blaine

I think it offers another important view point. I love android and believe it is a great operating system, but sometimes enthusiasts get so enveloped in unreleased products and hype them up. Unfortunately many of these Hero devices lately haven’t lived up to this hype I feel and having a 3rd party viewpoint is essential in bringing this out.

          • Christian

Is that rhetoric really necessary? People are entitled to their choices and at the end of the day and no one phone OS or phone suits every individual. Many readers here in the past 2 years have had such harsh viewpoints on other people, solely because of the type of phone they have. The hate is unnecessary and many of these comments encourage the propagation of cyber bullying.

          • Tim242

So says the guest. I couldn’t care less who uses which phone. But if you are going to bash one, you have no place on the other’s podcast. This is Droid Life, not BGR.

          • http://www.droid-life.com/ Tim-o-tato

I like having Ron’s outside perspective on Android matters. I think it’s important and keeps me in the loop on how iOS users are viewing Android’s ecosystem. Plus, Ron is well spoken and easy going, so any arguments we do have, it’s usually out of fun anyways. He loves all tech.

          • Gnex

            Same here. Sad face.

  • tomn1ce

Can you interchange the battery covers of the G-note 3? Will the international Note 3 back cover fit on the vzw Note 3?

    • Paul Christopher

Same form factor so I believe that they will be interchangeable

  • Silver Veloz

    YAY!

  • Tim242

Maybe you guys can talk about the advantages of using ad blockers, when sites such as this one get a little too ad happy.

    • kevin

A guys gotta eat…just install adaway and be done or don’t visit.

      • Tim242

There’s a difference in eating and totally f*cking up a buffet.

        • kevin

Obviously its not bad enough to get you to leave and not come back

          • Tim242

I can’t stand republicans. I guess I should move out of the US, eh?

          • kevin

Complaining about the ads on this site is like complaining about the decor in the restaurant you go to daily. Just seems like wasted effort.. just my .02

    • Ray Gray

      ads what are those?

    • Gnex

I use an ad blocker on Android to conserve data usage/battery life and improve performance (and it sure as hell DOES make a difference), but I don’t when I’m on my computer.

    • LionStone

Hehe! :-) What kills it for me is the persistent pink bar…barely gives any room for comments on my Nexus 7 in landscape. Forget copy and paste, have to go portrait.

      • Tim242

WoW, that’s crazy. That would def drive me nuts.

        • LionStone

          Yea…not nice :(

      • JoshGroff

It also doesn’t help to have the tab and status bar persistent. Full screen mode on stock browser ftw.

        • MikeSaver

chrome does have full screen when you’re scrolled down, must have it disabled above

          • LionStone

Here is full screen…with the persistent pink bar, so never really get full screen :(
The tabs is Chrome/Discus thing when there is a reply being made, they force themselves back on for some reason?

        • LionStone

It is, but when the keyboard pops up to make a reply it doesn’t clear. So that, on top of the persistent pink bar, takes up a good amount of work space.

    • Akashshr

Maybe time for a site redesign? *Wishes come true, wishes come true*

  • Thomas

    Amazing!!!
