Google Search Update From a Week Ago Finally has a Changelog – “Ok, Google Now” as a Hotword, Plus More

google search android

Remember the Google Search update that started its staged rollout on September 25? You’ve more than likely had it installed since then, but Google finally published a changelog for it yesterday afternoon. The update is a decent one, since it introduces hotword searches by having you say “OK, Google” at a search screen (hands-free fun!). You’ll also see “more beautiful” search results during searches and stay updated on notable people you search for.

The rollout has hit full-on-wave, so we’d be surprised if you haven’t already seen it.

What’s new:

  • New hotword: “Ok Google” (US only)
  • More beautiful search results (rolling out gradually)
  • Tell Google to keep you updated about notable people when you search for them

So instead of “google” it’s “ok google”…? just want to clarify

been using “google” for the past year to trigger voice search

  • MikeSaver

    Dear everyone,

Should I stay on Verizon or bolt over to AT&T? Help me out here! I’m sick of updates taking forever to get to Verizon. Want to buy a customizable Moto X.

Any help from the DL community is much appreciated!

    • Andy Taylor

Do you have Unlimited data on Verizon?

      • MikeSaver

        yes

        • Andy Taylor

Have you considered the X Dev Edition? I know it’s not custom but it’s unique and it has nerd appeal :-)

          • MikeSaver

yeah i know, i have considered it. Really want that customization though, aiming for a wood back.

Have some real first world problems going on here.

          • Andy Taylor

Yup. I choose to stay with VZW. For me the network is worth the lack of or waiting for new devices. How good is a device without a good signal? #firstworldproblems

            this^

  • rthvk

The “Watching TV?” think still won’t work for me and my 60″ Sharp Aquos. It’s got WiFi connectivity and everything, I think it’s just a compatibility issue.

  • Griff

I updated my Google Search, but my HTC One X (AT&T) doesn’t have the new hotword or any new features even though I updated the app, and even tried uninstalling and reinstalling…and nothing!!! I’m sad :(

    • rthvk

      Are you running Jelly Bean?

      Does Google Now work?

      • Griff

Yes, my One X (One XL) has 4.1.1, and Google Now does work but the update doesn’t seem to have taken effect on my phone. If it doesn’t come out soon, I’ll try contacting Google about it, and if nothing can be done…oh well. I plan on buying the HTC One Max when my contract is up in May anyway, might change if something new that is appealing to me gets released

  • matt

“Ok Google” is not US only… it’s everywhere

    • rthvk

I think they just don’t want to come under fire for it not working with thick accents.

  • Kevin Dahlstrom

Hey – Is there any way to force an update on apps like this or do I just have to wait? Thanks.

  • Tony Stark

Finally, I can use Jarvis as the trigger word on my phone as well!

    • aBabyPenguin

Change the Google Now language to English (UK) to make it sound like Jarvis as well!

  • Alexander Garcia

Haha okay okay. Try this ’cause it sure worked for me. I said “Suck my d–k Google!” and it actually worked! Hahaha

    • JetRanger

You can just say “Google”, same as always.

  • Kernschatten

I’ve been pondering The very last screenshot for the Search listing in the Play Store. It’s supposed to be a “screenshot” of a phone lock screen? Looks like a poor Photoshop attempt.

    • Dustin Casper

      Home.

  • Cary Zuber

You can also say burrito Google, die Google, zen Google, or any word then Google and it works as a ‘hotword’

  • rutgersjaffo

I have no idea what “more beautiful search results” would even mean. And really, who cares? Just have it do what I need it to do. SMH…

    • coolsilver

      Card UI breaking up results.

  • coolsilver

I just got a update today after I had installed the APK last week from DL.

  • Remo Gutierrez

for the easter egg I mean

  • Remo Gutierrez

Android 4.4 KK should incorporate Gangnam Style or Harlem Shake, similar to what they did with Android 4.0 ICS and Nyan Cat.

    • DKowalsky2

Nothing should ever incorporate Gangnam Style, ever again, for anything.

  • Shadowstare

Will I need to press the microphone button for this to work? If so, that defeats the purpose of the hot word.

    • JohnBergman

No, the hot word works as you expect. You say “OK Google” or “Google” and it begins listening (completely hands-free as Google Now has always been).

      • Tom Luley

You still have to launch the app though…I have the Google search bar on my homescreen and tried saying “Google”, “Okay Google” and “Okay Google Now” and nothing happened. Not totally hands free, yet. Still have to open the app. Same amount of steps too, I could just hit the microphone button and start talking, that is 1 click. If I want to use this, I still have to do 1 click to launch Google now. Pointless to me.

        • guest

But now, you only have to hit the mic button once. Before, you had to hit the button before every question. Now you don’t have to.

          • Steve B

            ^^^This^^^

        • JohnBergman

Just for your information there is an app the enables you to always be able to do voice commands. I don’t remember what it was called but they talked about it a couple months back here on Droid life. Maybe someone here remembers what it was called.

          • Tom Z

Tasker and AutoVoice can do this.

  • a3uge

So now it acknowledges ‘Okay Google’ in addition to just saying ‘Google’… officially confused.

    • Steve B

But now you don’t need to tap the microphone to trigger the hotword each time.

      • a3uge

I could always just have Google Now open and say ‘Google’ or ‘Okay Google’ to start microphone search…

        • Steve B

          You’re killing me…

Now when you want to ask an additional question, you just say “OK,Google” instead of tapping the microphone again, like before.

          • a3uge

Oh AFTER you’ve already searched? I guess whenever my first voice search screws up, I just start typing anyways. Didn’t know you couldn’t say ‘Okay Google’ again to start up another search.

          • Steve B

Exactly, now you can just rattle off voice search after voice search without touching your phone.

          • Jake

It used to be able to this, but at some point in the past that feature was removed. Glad to see it back.

          • Steve B

This was enabled in hacked versions but never in the official apk.

  • JetRanger

Update installed last night on my T-Mobile GS4. “OK Google” doesn’t matter. It still responds to just saying “Google” Just as it always has.

    • cjohn4043

Yeah, I finally got the update yesterday and that didn’t change for me either.

      • JetRanger

It doesn’t even say “Search or say OK, Google in the search bar. Still says Search, or say Google. Somebody on the interwebs said that it only work if you had the update English language pack. No idea where I’d find that … Regardless, this update dated 10/2/13 didn’t change anything for me that I have noticed.

        • Steve B

You guys need to manually update the language pack.

Go into Google Now > menu > settings > Voice > Offline speech recognition > tap English and then update.

Now when you go into Google Now you’ll have the new hotword and the continuous hotwording.

          • KenBarnum

Is that different other than adding OK? I don’t know what I’m missing. I did the language update.

          • coolsilver

I also did this but also had to sign out of google now and sign back in. It will update.

          • http://youtu.be/GvPlAyTG4ik?hd=1 1PhoneDoesnt.com

thx that worked but I can say ‘Google’ or ‘Ok, Google’ to launch it

          • JetRanger

Thank you. I totally missed the Offline Speech Recognition setting. I was looking under Language. Works great now. Thanks!

          • Lucky Armpit

Thanks so much. I also unchecked the option to auto-update via Wifi only.

        • Adya

If it does not work with all your settings right, just restart the phone once. Worked for me!!

      • coolsilver

Reboot your phone and sign out of google now and sign back in. It will update.

    • coolsilver

Reboot your phone and sign out of google now and sign back in. It will update, did for me.

        • Alex Boro

Haha, when you crack your screen on your phone an image of a kitkat should pop up.

          • Shane Redman
