Agent Makes Your Phone Contextually Smarter With Ease

agent app

One of the most underrated features of the Moto X, and the new DROID line on Verizon in general, is the Motorola Assist app that it comes bundled with. Essentially a slimmed-down version of Motorola’s Smart Actions, it allows your phone to react to you when you are driving, sleeping or in a meeting. The only downside is that Smart Actions is exclusive to Moto devices. Agent is an app that can do that and more, plus it is available for all Android devices.

Setting actions to happen based on contextual events is nothing new. Ask any of the Tasker app faithful how they have their phones set up to do perform set tasks without touching a single button, and they will tell you its the greatest app ever. The problem is, Tasker isn’t very user friendly, requiring users to navigate and operate through complicated settings menus. Agent is the opposite. Just turn an agent on, click a few operations that you want the app to fulfill, and Agent does the rest. Shutting Bluetooth off when the battery is low, silencing your phone for meetings or sleeping hours, and auto-responding when you are driving are just a few things Agent can do.

Agent is $1.99 in Google Play, but after using it the price is well worth it. The app offers a lot of functionality and makes it seamless to use at the same time. Hit the link below and get that phone working for you.

I’ve been using Easyprofiles for separate modes. Developer still working on NFC I guess but overall not bad.

  • Phil Whittemore

“Setting Profiles” in the Play Store is a much easier version of Tasker and more powerful than Locale. I don’t know why this app flies under the radar but it can easily do things that Tasker and Locale can’t. I paid for Tasker and Locale and I don’t use them any more since finding the gem Setting Profiles. Its a very powerful and easy phone automation tool.

  • WAldenIV

I’ll stick to my NFC tags.

  • kaufkin

for anybody that has this (or similar apps)…. how much battery does the app suck?

  • David Goldberg

    $1.99 too much. I’ll pass.

    • tharealoc

Go buy one of the KitKats with the code, get the 5 dollar credit. win win. Candy and free stuff

  • Santi

Is it better than the Automateit app?

  • bigdan

I’ve used Locale since I had my OG Droid and I’ve always been pretty satisfied with that. It can use any plugin that Tasker can.

  • gundamboyzack

Anyone know how it compares to AutomateIT?

  • epps720

I’ve used Timeriffic for years now and love it. It’s more bare bone and completely time based but handles all the basic functions for me and it’s free. Tasker definitely has more bells and whistles but this is sufficient for me as of now. Little oblivious to what I’m missing I guess.

If I’m buying an app think I would drop the extra $1 on Tasker than this

    • Jeff Mowbray

I too have used Timeriffic for over 2 years and it works great for me. I’m open minded to these new apps though. I’d love to hear other opinions on what people use and like. I am considering getting a Moto X and perhaps would use the moto assist.

  • br_hermon

    Tasker for the win! :)

    • JD_26

a lil too overwhelming to use ?

      • El_Big_CHRIS

it really is. I got it when it was on sale. I tried doing some of the commands, but i got discouraged due to me not being able to figure out the menus :(

  • SparkysShocker

Wish Assist would turn on Bluetooth when driving. Is agent worth the $2 price if you have a new Droid with Assist?

    • Stnkycheezman

agreed, I’d like that feature as well. but since i got the maxx, leaving bluetooth on isn’t that big a deal.

    • MichaelFranz

wish you could ask google now to do it. I’d be fine with that.

      • SparkysShocker

Yeah it was so disappointing when I tried it and it appeared as if it was going to do it, and then I got the message saying it couldn’t do it.

      • JD_26

i hate it that siri got this feature before us :(

    • kul

Agent also has battery, meeting, sleep and parking agents, so almost five apps worth for $2.

FWIW, we read out messages automatically, but you have to tell Assist to do that.

  • Jeremy Sheehan

Llama has worked for me. Isn’t updated often, but the app is damn near perfect if you ask me.

    • Tim Swann

takes a little while to tinker with it to work the way you want it to, but like you said, the app is damn near perfect.

In order to determine if you are driving, wouldn’t it need to use the GPS? Then i’d be worried about it killing the battery quickly.

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Eric Rees

No. This does the same as Moto Assist it seems and is able to tell if you’re driving based off the accelerator. It’s pretty accurate.

    • j

Probably a mix of accelerometer + network location.. Google can tell if you’re walking, riding a bike, or stuck in traffic.. so..

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

watch some of the 2013 i/o videos. The “blue dot” (gps) video covers this….i’m about to watch it just because its insane.

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

WE NEED MORE OF THIS. Moto bring back smart actions. Or google do it up, put that geofencing to use.

  • Ryan Davis

    smart actions?

    • JBartcaps

      …?
