Speedtest 3.0 is Now Available on Android

speedtest 3.0 android

Ookla’s Speedtest 3.0 app is now available on Android, just as they said it would be. Gone is the 2009 UI, in is an iOS clone UI. Not much else to say, so let’s have a speedtest battle. I’m sure you’ll have no trouble crushing my HSPA+ and prepaid scores seen above.

Drop your screenshots of scores in the comments!

Cheers Marco!

Motorola Razr i, H+ connection. Lima, Peru, South America, America, The Earth. Ha
    Oh, carrier: Claro n.n

My wifi connection is just a bit better than this.
And for Peru, my most affordable 8mb connection is better than the one of 90%+ of people.

This is how H+ speeds are here n.n There’s no LTE, yet.
But, I still can browse, share, use maps, etc acceptably fast even when going on a bus in the city.

I wouldn’t take an smartphone over another because of LTE, ever. Can’t find an use for such high transfer rates.

    Whats whit the cats?

  • Tim242

C’mon Droid Lifers…pay the .99 and remove the ads.

    • JoshGroff

If it was useful for more than just bragging rights, or as a quick network diagnostic tool then I’d pay for it in a heartbeat.

      • Tim242

It was only $1. It was worth that.

        • JoshGroff

If I took that logic and applied it too every app I’ve considered purchasing, I would have probably doubled the 400+ I’ve already spent on apps.

        • chris420o

          i disagree

          • Tim242

            Of course you do.

    • Nevets

Or rooted users can save themselves a $1 and just get AdAway instead!

      • Tim242

I’m rooted and running a custom ROM. I choose to support devs.

  • Pdiddy187

Vzw has slowed down. I used to get 44 down up to a few weeks ago.

  • JoshGroff

G-Nex on Verizon. HTC One on T-Mobile. That, and the fact that I am addicted to Netflix and would burn through my data allotment in a weekend, is why I stick to Wi-Fi.

  • Jeremy B.

Galaxy Note 2 on Verizon, just outside Tampa

  • Brandon

Speeds have been garbage here for a while, not sure why. Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, Twin Cities.

    • Tim242

8 down, 11 up is not garbage. Your latency is 46, that matters most. Fast is fast.

      • Brandon

Considering most folks here are getting the speeds I used to get, I’d still say speeds are junk here.

        • Tim242

That’s why apps like this are bad for people that might be OCD. You are not going to see a difference in 8 and 50 Mbps in anything on your device. Web pages will load the same, music and video will still stream great. It’s just a number. Fast is fast : )

  • Guest

Galaxy Note 2 on Verizon near the Tampa area. I dont get why the date is so off….

Motorola Droid Maxx, Verizon (duh), Rocky Mount NC. Speeds were almost double that when we first got 4G (about a year ago). I blame all the stupid iPhone users who upgraded for slowing down the network.

The app is still terrible, by the way. I have one of the best/newest phones available and it’s still laggy as hell.

    • JoshGroff

Neither my gnex nor my one lag on speed test. Both are on 4.3 though, so that might have something to do with it.

  • Tim242

Little Rock, AR S4…had to pay the .99 to remove ads!

    • thom

Where you moving? I thought Little Rock was a proud corporate regional headquarters for VZW. I expected better results there.

  • TTinz11

    Not bad for hspa+

    • Brandon Jiang

dude… it says LTE in the top right of your screenshot

      • TeeTinz11

HTC Droid Incredible, CyanogenMod 7.1.0-Inc (Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread), Verizon 3G, Los Angeles, CA. If this is like golf where lowest score wins, then I’m the Tiger Woods of Speedtest.

    • Brandon Jiang

all im seeing is how horrible the app looks. it SHOULD scale so much better than this… ookla you lazy bums

      • 655321

        I feel I really can’t complain. 1. It’s free and 2. I’m using a 3-year-old handset with a 3.7″ display.

        • emoney

recently made the switch from the original incredible to the One. wow what a difference.

          • 655321

I’m holding out for the Moto X on Verizon with a ceramic (or wood) back. Luckily by the time Verizon gets MotoMaker the wood backs should be out and it’s rumored the price will also drop $100. Of course, I’ll be giving up my unlimited data but I really don’t use all that much data anyway. Seeing my speeds above helps explain why.

For comparison, Gnex on WiFi, same connection. Then Gnex on Verizon wireless LTE. I’ve got 2 bars, but 2 bars is terrible. I’m at -104dB.

  • Galen

Not sure this one is going to hold up, but it should be in small company — GN2, VZW in Dalton, Ga.

  • Chris

I really don’t get why people are freaking put over it not having holo. those are googles guidelines yes, but they do not enforce them? If Google did enforce them, a lot of apps would have been removed and a lot wont see the light of day till they are updated.

is the new Ui perfect or the best? Nope but an improvement from before.

Nor did he say Android. :P

      • trophynuts

        lol EXACTLY !!!

  • Taylor Abrahamson

Honestly, I hate the new UI… Old was definitely better. This new UI doesn’t even follow the Holo theme, so it shouldn’t be called ‘updated’.

    • Chris

and does google force developers to use holo?

      • Taylor Abrahamson

Nope they most certainly do not. But that doesn’t change the fact that this ‘new’ UI from speedtest is awful.

  • cmbeid

    Galaxy Nexus, Lehigh Valley, PA

    • Tim242

      You need a new phone!

      • cmbeid

I doubt Verizon will get the next Nexus phone. I would have to jump ship. I also have unlimited data on Verizon. I just use my Nexus 7 for practically everything.

        • JoshGroff

If the gnex cab handle everything you throw at it, and you’re not obsessed with having something newer, than more power to you.

      • JoshGroff

My gnex in real life performance isn’t that much slower than my one. Then again I’m usually just streaming Netflix or paying games. I’m sure if I tried any heavy multitasking and what not that the gnex would be outclassed.

        • Tim242

Yeah, it holds its own. But, with the TI processor, it wouldn’t take too much multitasking to make it squeal a little.

          • JoshGroff

Most of the problems I’ve had were with trying to multi task when downloading large files. For the most part, setting app updates to manual and updating overnight fixed that.

A lot of it depends on how you use your phone. If most of your usage is streaming media and gaming, than it can, for the most part, keep up with current devices, if properly managed.

      • monkey082506

I’ve got 18-27 hours per charge on my Moto X, averaging 2 hour screen time. I use Google navigator about 3 times a day about 20 minutes at a time.

    • T_Dizzle

      How are liking the G2?

      • John Twain

I love the G2. Coming from the Galaxy Nexus, I think it’s a huge improvement.

        • T_Dizzle

My Gnex runs great on CM but it shouldn’t have to is my thought. Glad you like it, it’s on my potential list.

    • Tim242

      That’s terrible!

    • T4rd

      Nice signal. /s

    • Rick Vill

How did you change the menu button with the recent apps button? I also have a G2. Loving it.

  • Blair Ginley

Still doesn’t pick the quickest server. I’m still having to manually select the nearest and quickest

    LG G2 on AT&T LTE

That is low. That seems to be a trend with the G2. Maybe it’s just a coincidence.

Verizon in Washington DC downtown sucks… I would be lucky if i get more than 1 Mbps on my droid razr maxx hd… Am I the only one ???

    • StuckOnVerizonForever

The government is using it all to spy on you.

    • flosserelli

Verizon LTE in Houston is no better. I “rule the air” at 1.52 Mbps…

      • Bob

Are you in the hood or something? I see 10-20 Mbps all day long.

        • Justin W

Wouldn’t it be better in “the hood” due to less traffic? Or would there be more traffic because less people have in-home internet?

          • ezbbycame2play

            That, is a good question.

      • Diablo81588

I disagree, I get 30mbps down at my work in League City. Its all about location.

    • Sam

You know the government uses VZW, right? Especially in DC, so the network is definitely going to be slower.

Omg it’s actually full screen on my n7!

    • Brandon Jiang

and on the n4!!! (like legit. the nexus 4 was the ONLY PHONE that screwed the speedtest app up.)

  • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

    Typical slow Verizon LTE :(

    • Mike

Just got 35 down and 15 up in Pittsburgh. I don’t know where you people are that you’re seeing such slow speeds.

      • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

I’m in a rural town in New Hampshire, so it’s not because there are a ton of people around sharing the tower. Some might say it’s because I only have 1 bar, but even with 3 bars the highest download I get is 6-7Mbps.

      • Taylor Abrahamson

In Downtown Seattle, with full bars of verizon LTE, I can’t even get a Ping reading. I flat out get nothing at all. I can’t load a single web page. Boy am I glad I don’t live or work downtown.

        • ki11ak3nn

I feel your pain man. This was inside a building at South Lake Union, but I don’t really see much better than this. My guess is all the people on Verizon here.

          • http://randomphantasmagoria.com/ Shawn

Mix in a decent signal and try again.

          • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

If you read my other reply, you’d see it’s not much better even with 3 bars. The ping is great so it’s not that the signal is the biggest issue.

    • T4rd

      You have 1 bar..

    • http://randomphantasmagoria.com/ Shawn

Try again after you can mix in a decent signal.

    • Cowboydroid

That’s exactly what I’ve been experiencing too, right in the middle of Dallas. I tested out T-Mobile for a month and was getting actual LTE speeds on its HSPA network.

Nexus 5 can’t come fast enough.

      • http://techonblogger.ward.pro/ Stynkfysh

Just switched to T-Mobile this week and am super SUPER happy. I’m in San Diego and drive all over and have had no problems. It’s weird, but its like a weight is of my back. Google Music whenever – yes! Netflix for the kid while driving – yes! No friggin’ data charges to worry about. AND I’ve built a report with the folks at the local T-Mobile store who are 10x more friendly than the Verizon store folks who often seem annoyed. Oh, and LTE on 2 bars gets me 25.80/2.2 Mbps.

        • ezbbycame2play

I’m also in SD and was thinking of switching to T-Mo…your comment just made me more confident to do it.

          • http://techonblogger.ward.pro/ Stynkfysh

I think its worth trying. LTE is not as widespread as Verizon, but their 4G is pretty darn fast and I have had no noticeable network or call performance issues compared with Verizon. The furthest out I have been is Lakeside and I had fast LTE there.

          • ezbbycame2play

Yea well this “unlimited” data from Verizon isn’t so special when i’m only averaging 3-6 Mbps down at home and LTE doesn’t even work half the time while i’m at work (near the 32nd St. Naval Base)

          • http://techonblogger.ward.pro/ Stynkfysh

I sold my unlimited lines on eBay for $300-$350. I was unable to keep my phone numbers though. I read somewhere online that people have had success keeping their number by timing a number port with the line ownership change over, or something like that. If I come across it, I’ll post a link up here.

          • ezbbycame2play

Did not know that actually works. I thought if you switched the line to someone else you would lose unlimited. I’m definitely going to have to look into that.

          • http://techonblogger.ward.pro/ Stynkfysh

I have both bought and sold unlimited Verizon lines. I guarantee you that someone else can take over the unlimited line and it can be handled over the phone. If you are ok losing your number for a bit, you can also suspend your Verizon line and try out T-Mobile for a month with a new temporary #. That way you are not double-charged for voice/data. The restocking fee is $50 for phones if you return one and you have 30 days to return vs Verizon’s 14.

    • Fresh360

WAIT! So it’s not just me getting these slow speeds…What happened? (I know technically what happened but whhhhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!) I had 35MBps with 1 bar when I 1st got my Gnex, the 4Gs VZW gave me were faster than my Comcast WiFi, now look at me : (

      • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

Haha, nope it’s not just you. My speeds have been getting lower and lower each day.

        • Fresh360

          I think some1 is stealing our Gs…

    • Wolfpack93

I’ve found that different servers produce vastly different results. The default server speedtest offered yielded a d/l of 6.5 Mb/s but when I went into settings and chose my own server (in a closer town), I got d/l of 20 Mb/s. The server variables make tests with apps like these unreliable IMHO.

      • http://twitter.com/geoff5093 Geoff Johnson

I haven’t really found that to be the case, at least here. The server speedtest.net uses on their website and mobile apps (for me in New England) always yield the fastest speeds. It’s possible your closest server just can’t handle all the load.

  • Daniel Grabowski

Verizon HTC One. In a multi-level building at work :)

    • danny

Do you have problems with your HTC one with WiFi?

      • JoshGroff

Define problems. I sometimes feel it’s not as zippy as it should be, but I never really have lag except when loading Web pages. My only non streaming Web browsing is here, swappa, and flipboard. Here is where I experience the most problems, so why not blame disqus? ;) Streaming has no lag whether it’s Netflix, YouTube, or Pandora.

Signal and ul/dl seem to be on par with other devices.

  • Ryan Powell

Fun easter egg if you swipe the speedometer down once the test has completed.
