Screen Shot 2013-09-24 at 10.13.45 PM

Amazon was kind enough to offer up this pre-made spec comparison chart of their new tablet line-up. You can see exactly how the new Kindle Fire HDX family compares to the regular Kindle Fire HD models.

Is it possible to get games such as Dead Trigger on here, can you sideload apps or are you locked into only what amazon wants you to use?

  • Donnie Dangus

Still hanging on to the HP Touchpad with CM9. It’s been a tad off recently, but the form factor/screen size is perfect for what I use it for (marking documents, etc).

Sadly Amazon has not seen fit to add GPS, there is always a Gotcha with them.

  • duke69111

Do the kindles have bluetooth or gps?

Edit: Looks like they will have bluetooth, but only wifi for location services. The 4g models will have agps.

Don’t want to poopoo these too much, great CPU, nice screen. But why are we still seeing 16GBs as entry level storage with no expandable option? These become far less attractive when you consider the 32GB model the minimum, which carries a 444 dollar price tag.

Amazon is pushing its customers towards cloud storage for a lot of the media you own. I think there is also a planned obsolescence angle here too ….

I would be so excited if this thing had custom ROMs

  • James Hill

That web browser amazon developed looks really promising.

  • Cael

Bezel’s too big. Forked android. Reps can see your porn, probably double NSA agents too. S800 ain’t enough for me.

    • James Hill

Yeah, I’m waiting till they put a 1w i7 along with a g force titan in a tablet. Until then, no tablet for me sir. See you in 2025.

  • PolarBear

Amazon is in alliance with Apple. Just saying.

  • Curtis

    I like MAYDAY.

    • T4rd

Devs should port it to an apk we can load on any Android device. Free tech support for everything! =p

      • Curtis

There has got to be a device ID or some other key they use to authenticate their hardware. In my opinion it doesn’t take much to run a tablet, but MAYDAY decreases the barrier to entry for grandparents etc.

        • T4rd

Yeah, I’m sure Mayday wouldn’t work on other ROMs/devices. I was just (trying to) being funny.

  • TheWenger

Root and stock Android on these would be win with that S800.

  • RaptorOO7

Honestly I have to say the pricing is very nice, the storage is great compared to what we see from other Android OEM’s Amazon seems to get it. I haven’t used a “Fire” tablet so can you even install the play store or is it Amazon App Store only?

For people complaining about the OS…
Hardware wise these things cant be beat on price..EVEN by the new nexus 7.
These babies have dual speakers on the 7 AND 8.9 inch model, both with latest snapdragon 800 core and BOTH come with 64gig options!!
I was planning on getting a nexus 10 (OG model) when the new one gets announced due to price breaks of the old one…
But considering the price of the 8.9 inch one..i may opt for this. Specially since the good folks at xda will undoubtedly hack it to run AOSP anyway. Good by crappy kindle OS and hello full featured vanilla tablet with snapdragon 800, dual speakers, and 64gigs of space!!

Never buy a tablet/phone based on what you think developers may one day accomplish.

      • JoshGroff

        This ^

I do that with every phone I buy, especially HTC. If it’s not S-off, I wait until it is before buying.

Enticing but the Nexus7 2013 is still much more well rounded at a very good price. Pass.

  • cheese

Wow that HDX is enticing. Dolby audio too with that killer 2560×1600 display w/ Snapdragon 800 for a good price.

  • Ryan Gullett

Amazon is smart. They are like Nintendo. They know what niche to go after, and they know its full of money.

    • michael arazan

Too bad they won’t fix or rehab their app store and app

    • T4rd

Except Nintendo refuses to directly compete with the big boys by putting decent hardware in their consoles. These tabs have the best hardware available right now for a killer price. Only downside is their semi-proprietary OS/skin.

  • Inquizitor

Honestly, this does seem pretty great. Going to make my new Nexus 7 feel pretty outdated, especially when someone puts stock Android on it…

  • jeff manning

    Vudu lawsuit incoming

  • Samsung

Don’t worry, I’ll release more of the same as well…. multiple devices per year.

  • Jeremy Gross

    featuring no open android!!!

    • Neil Fujiwara

Were you expecting that to drastically change? It is a Kindle Fire so it is going to use Amazon super skin. For a family tablet it is great. My girlfriend’s niece loves watching Bubble Guppies that is streaming via amazon prime on the Kindle Fire. The online browser is pretty bad, but it excels in the niche :).

      • Jeremy Gross

it seems it is meant for kids and non techy people. then they can dumb down the specs for the simple task and makeing it cheaper (perhaps)

        • zwieblekopf

Except this one doesn’t have dumbed down specs
