Phil Schiller Says New iPhone 5C is “Android-free” – You Damn Right It is.

phil schiller

Oh that Phil Schiller – the mouth of Apple – still can’t seem to get over Android’s success. On stage this afternoon, Schiller managed to sneak in what he believed to be a dig at our favorite mobile OS as he talked about the environmental friendliness of his company’s new plastic iPhone 5C and its accompanying cases. He talked about it meeting environmentally happy means, saying that it was “Arsenic-free, mercury-free, and…Android-free.” Good one! Belly buster. Mic dropper. Walk-off…bunt.

But you know what? We are 100% OK with Schiller’s continued antics, especially now that we know he gets case design inspirations from children’s games (or Crocs) , build materials from companies they regularly sue, and camera ideas from none other than HTC (“Had TCopy”).

We’re glad that Apple wants to continue to try and distance their ideas and gameplans from Android, you know, since most of them came from Android ideas and inspirations introduced 3 years ago. We’ve moved on.

Oh, and because someone in our live blog requested it – Jony Ive face!

      LMFAO!

    • Nick

      HAHA YES

    • AndroidUser00110001

Still laughing after 10 minutes. Classic!

    • Anil Reddy

hahaha! Thats exactly how it should be! After all, a splash in the pond is nothing against a huge oceanic wave!

  • Liderc

I don’t even get the joke. Other than the fact that they just released a new phone with a finger print reader and a processor that their OS can’t even use.

    • Justtyn Hutcheson

To their credit, iOS7 is 64-bit native, and they have a “seamless” transition to 64-bit apps for devs…but the effect on the end user is likely nil.

    • Jeff

I am also confused by it. I must not be smart enough to understand.

  • SprintSucksDonkeyBalls

Hey hey, everyone, no matter what happens, if you love or hate Apple, we can ALL agree that Sprint still sucks!

    • http://www.twitter.com/OtisFeelgood1 OtisFeelgood

      LOL.

  • Geoffrey Gunter

    I prefer this guys perspective… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2Vt5O9cucg

    • Tony Byatt

Meh…it’s not the copying, it’s the copying and then saying you invented it…Good video though…

  • Michael Contreras

    Innovation free*

  • litobirdy

Don’t know how you can say “android-free” and show IOS7 that looks a lot of android in the same presentation? lol

    • TheDrizzle

I was thinking the same thing. It’s Android-free in the name, but not the design.

    • Ben

It’s Android-y kind of in that it’s bright, but the pastel gradients are largely (thankfully) absent from stock Android.

  • Guy Pierce

I guess they can’t use the term “There’s an app for that” regarding the Connect Four game that can be played on the back of those childish cases!

  • Colin Huber

I actually think Jony Ive is a badass. The rest of them can eat rocks and sand and other gravely stuff.

  • Terrance Steiner

“Oh my God it is a shark….woa, that was close. We barley jumped.”

  • satsmine2k4

Android is “Same old” free like all iphone’s are…

  • Will P

lmfao those cases are so ugly. What were they thinking?

  • zepfloyd
  • 9ballvince

Well considering that ios7 is more android like than anything else. I would have to say that they have lost their innovativeness and traded it for delusion!

  • Buur

I can’t believe how ugly that case is. Steve Jobs would have shot lasers out of his eyes if someone suggested that thing to him.

  • http://people.ign.com/mrfrodo24 Mr Frodo24

I wonder if Jony Ive’s closet only has gray V-necks and jeans

    • Justtyn Hutcheson

There are white V-necks as well. Maybe he’s going to get some “unashamedly colorful” V-necks to match the new 5C.

      • The Phenom

        Hahahahahahahaha

  • The Phenom

Mr. Schiller goes down on a check swing. Hit the showers.

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

What does that case match my crocs?

    • SchwannyT

Because hipsters can make their own moto X case to match what they are wearing. Now iOS fans have something to match them

    • Guy Pierce

Yea but you can’t play connect four on your Crocks.

    • Douglas Lewis

Because crocs stole the design from Apple. Lawsuit to be annouced.

  • Stewie

Phill Schill …. Is he related to Will or Bill Krill ?

  • Eric

I would love to punch Jony Ive’s face.

    • Steve Ballmer

LOL. Kellex likes his post XD

  • Ron_Swanson

Walkoff Bunts are actually awesome. Bad analogy

  • Alex manning

Android is all up in his head

  • Nee Austin

Schiller, an emotionally-equivalent tween girl also claimed to quit using Instagram when it came out on Android.

  • Travis Shepherd

PocketNow said the case design was stolen from Crocs!

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Nice comparison actually heh. Update post. :)

  • Ryan Stewart

I dont know about the digs (or really care) I just clicked to comment that I found that case HILARIOUS.

But it makes sense. They are losing out to the youngsters who dont think Apple is as cool as they once did. Its an appeal to them, bright colors for the kids!

  • Pratik Holla

I puked a little when i saw those new cases. WOW. Cannot believe that Apple would put something out like that!

  • Stevedub40

“Walk-off…bunt.” I seriously laughed out loud at this. This pretty much sums up apple’s iphone releases as of late. Good stuff man.

  • Tony Byatt

It’s hilarious reading the comments on Apple sites. I had no idea how big the Apple Bubble had gotten…

  • CHRIS42060

Same old Apple just in a different case…

    • Mayoo

      Might I add this?

      • tomn1ce

Is that Ron on the pictures -_-

      • http://meatcastle.com/ Youre My Boy Bloo

Can we start calling the new iPhone what it really is?

        The iPhone 4,4

        • Mayoo

I disagree, too close to Android 4.4

          • http://meatcastle.com/ Youre My Boy Bloo

I guess that is a good point… Imagine someone’s disappointment if they go in and think they are going to get KitKat, and then accidentally leave with phone herpes.

        • Anil Reddy

          No..iphone 5c can be called iPhone 4R..iPhone 4 recycled..

          • http://jamieellis.co.cc/ Jamie Ellis

iPhone 4R III (4S being the first 4R with 2 follow ups)

        • http://ubuntu-su.blogspot.com/ Kleverson Royther

          iPhone RT…

      • DainLaguna

        so perfect.

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

    M7 M7 M7 M7 M7. Moving along.

  • Detonation

Gotta love how instead of just dropping the price of the last gen phone (Iphone 5) like they usually do, they instead release an inferior version of it at that lower price point. Distract consumers with new colors while they pad their profit margins.

  • Guy Pierce

Android free? It looks to me to be inspired 100% from android!

    • http://jamieellis.co.cc/ Jamie Ellis

Colour Options from Nokia Lumia and to less extent Samsung. Apple normally boring Black and White!

  • thedonxr

I was hoping for something new to really push innovation, but it looks like apple is flatlining on that front.

  • Kevin McDole

I’m glad we agree that the camera designs were blatently copied from HTC.

  • NexusMan

Kellen, I love this post! The links are priceless and on point. That iPhone 5c video is the most ridiculous piece of mumbo jumbo I have ever seen. It’s laughable. I was instantly in the mood to re-watch the Kit Kat video. The iPhone 5c is a disgrace to Job’s legacy. And that case is HIDEOUS!!! God I hope Milton Bradley sues Apple! LOL.

  • Tyler James Edward Hills

Well said Kellen. Just realized with the recent price drop that you can have an N4 (better build quality, display, similar performance) for $300 cheaper than a 5C. 300 bucks. I almost want to write Google a thank you letter just for that

    • Dane Carpenter

You mean $249. I’d say $199, but the 8 gigabyte model is unavailable.

      • Tyler James Edward Hills

        Huh? I mean $300 cheaper. As in the 16GB 5C is $549 and the 16GB N4 is $249

  • jamisles02

The iPhone being “Android-free” is one of the biggest reasons I’ll never buy an iPhone.

    • anywherehome

      Because it means “brain-free” :)

    • PhoenixPath

Android free? Hardly. It’s trying to *be* Android.

      Lest ye all forget:

Droid Life; The moment iOS7 became Android-
      http://www.droid-life.com/2013/06/10/that-moment-when-ios7-became-android/

    • Tyler Casilio

and “originality-free” plus Android is “Health-Free” I mean seriously, who wants to eat an Apple a day? That’s just boring

  • Murph

Look at that case… The C stands for Calculator.

    • http://www.twitter.com/OtisFeelgood1 OtisFeelgood

      ROFL

    • Dane Carpenter

How dare you compare my calculator to that case. My calculator deserves better.

  • Doan

During one of the next Android flagship press-releases:

“And, possibly, the best thing about this new phone: There’s nothing fruity about it.”

    • DanPatrickFlores

      I’m sure it’ll be sweet.

      • Doan

No, no, no, DanPatrickFlores. That’s counter-productive to the ironic sarcasm.

        • DanPatrickFlores

I was going for the dessert/Kit Kat reference, but your use of sarcasm was better.

          • Doan

Well, they’d both work, but they must be in separate press-releases.

          • The Phenom

            Hahahaha well played.

    • Franklin Ramsey

I think “And, Possibly the best thing about this new phone: In 2-3 years Apple will give us props for the revolutionary features we introduced.”

      • chris125

Or, “In 2-3 years apple will implement these same features and try to sue everyone who has been using these for years claiming they invented it and did it first”

        • poop

The further this train goes, the less subtly there is to what’s said in the press-release. Honestly, the best thing I can say should be said:
“[...]And possibly, the best thing about this new phone: a couple years down the road, our competitors will see what revolution really is.”

        • michael arazan

Each new iphone comes with a subpoena for ios users to give to their friends with android phones, now that’s accessorizing

    • NemaCystX

I doubt it, if they said Fruity, they could be misunderstood. I mean android is about deserts anyway lol

  • AnotherAndroidKid

I might actually watch your show again to see Ron’s opinions on this.

    • http://ronoffringa.me/ Ron Offringa

      I’ll try not to disappoint.

    • The. Great. Cornholio!

It’s actually a good/great phone, it’s just so much fun to take honest shots at it.

  • http://www.ginnefine.net Gi_Fine

Yeah that was in poor taste and not really necessary…or funny.

  • Guy Pierce

I’m sure glad they did not use the word “Revolutionary!”

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Safe play, since nothing was. :P

      • Guy Pierce

Although they almost tried when they announced their “Revolutionary” 64bit A7 Chip.

Edit: I mean the worlds only 64bit mobile chip!

    • The. Great. Cornholio!

But wait… What about the fingerprint thing?!?!?! That announcement singlehandedly made every guy that doesn’t want his girl to go through his phone cry aloud for the genius of Cupertino. /s

  • Justtyn Hutcheson

How is the 5C still worth $549? Give me a break.

    • WickedToby741

Moto X pricing should pivot to match the 5C’S pricing scheme. It really is a good match up.

    • Mayoo

I saw what you did there!

    • moelsen8

that’s probably the biggest surprise of the day, given the constant leaks and rumors

      • The Phenom

The leaks are always planned to generate buzz.

        • sirmeili

Perhaps post Jobs. But when Jobs was around, no leaks were planned. He was all about the hype of people not knowing.

    • JohanV

Here have a Kit Kat ;)

      • Justtyn Hutcheson

Well played, sir, well played :-)

    • Tyler Casilio

you walked into that one lol

      • Justtyn Hutcheson

Nooo! the comment got eaten :-(.

To those who missed: I was replied to above with the comment “Here, have a Kit Kat”. Unintended openings ftw!

  • Ben

I was thinking much along the same way. They dig and dig at Samsung and then make a plastic phone. They take digs at HTC and then say that no other phone uses bigger pixels in their sensors to make better images. It’s comical.

    • htowngtr

lol, yea, Apple mocks other people then flat out copies than style and calls it new. The only people who don’t know are Apple sheep.

  • http://people.ign.com/mrfrodo24 Mr Frodo24

+1 Kellen. Love your Apple posts :)

  • htowngtr

lol @ the asshurt by Apple in that statement

  • whatvine?

it looks like an android tho

  • NIGHTSCOUT

    What a joke…..

  • Tre

    “We’ve moved on.”

    Clearly you haven’t…

    • NexusMan

Clearly we have. But Schiller keeps bringing us back.

    • http://people.ign.com/mrfrodo24 Mr Frodo24

Pretty sure he means Android aka. Google. Google simply let’s the tech and software do the talking.

    • Tony Byatt

      Reflect much…

  • Radgatt

    Am I surprised? Nope!
