Yahoo Weather App for Android Gets Overhauled, is Now Pretty Damn Beautiful

new yahoo weather

Yahoo Weather received an update this morning that turns the Android app into one of the more beautiful weather apps we have seen to date. The complete UI makeover pulls in location-based photos from Flickr, uses minimal text and images to present temperatures and forecasts, and even comes close to following most of Android’s new design guidelines (side navigation menu). You can still add multiple locations, with each pulling in a big, beautiful photo to represent it. Plus, you’ll see 10-day forecasts, chances of precipitation, wind and pressure, moon phases, UV patterns, sunrise and sunset, and more. Oh, there is a new lock screen widget as well, that maximizes as you swipe it down.

The app remains free. Bravo, Yahoo.

The new app is nice but it has some bugs. I’ve been trying to deal with Yahoo to have them figured out. The biggest problem is images are not sizing correctly for the app. I have probably 300 images in the apps pool and with the old app the sized fine, with this app it’s only showing maybe 25-30% of the image.

Too bad it doesn’t it do hourly windchill forecasts, which are absolutely critical for life in the Midwest.

    I liked yahoo pool.

Beautiful! Finally found something worthy of replacing my stock GS3 time/weather widget.

This is bad-ass. All the good parts of all the weather apps I’ve tried. Nicely done (for once), Yahoo.

  • jarofclay77

Ok, who is in Whitefish!? Small worldness.

  • Mike

Very nice re design, although it is very ios looking

  • Dave

Tightest look for a weather app yet. Love the scroll down feature instead of tapping on menus. Now if I could get some 4.2 love from Samsung so i can get DashClock.

    • LionStone

Looks good but WeatherBug Elite still has this beat, with Wind speed radar, Spark alert, Pollen levels, etc. Widget, status bar location.

  • subchoopas

    I just got
paid $6784 working off my laptop this month. And if you think that’s cool, my
divorced friend has twin toddlers and made over $9k her first month. It feels
so good making so much money when other people have to work for so much less.

I had the last version of the app, and it messed up my GPS bad. I’m kind of hesitant to try the new one, no matter how pretty it is.

  • raph ael

hint: swipe up to see the 10 day forecast.

    • raph ael

      swipe down to refresh

  • Pratik Holla

Would certainly love some dashclock support and weather in the notification bar.

    • raph ael

u can turn on notification bar in the settings

  • Andy Stetson

Ugh, another [beautiful] weather app to feed my addiction!!

  • Detonation

Notification Icon is still sense themed and distorted on my GS3. A shame really, because otherwise I would make this my new daily weather app.

  • beyeg

I love how Kellex uses Whitefish in all of his weather app reviews. Keeps me from having to check my own weather. Go Griz!

  • yummy

I am trying to say how awesome
this is, but my gnex battery is

  • Tejas

This is a shockingly similar iOS port….Everything, including the iOS location icon, menu dots do nothing, no swipe to right to reveal options like most Android apps..
I loved the app on iOS, but I am not too happy with this direct port on Android..

  • http://riteshtripathy.wordpress.com/ Ritesh

Just tried it, looks okay.. but its got nothing on EZ Weather HD!

  • Shirtless_Peja

Props on Whitefish, Montana Kellex. Not too far away and try to get up there whenever possible.

  • Randall Wanamaker

I will do nothing that supports Yahoo. They have ruined too many good things.

  • DroidzFX

Yahoo needs to work on the messenger app and bring it out of the 90s.

how’s the accuracy on this? i’ve been using Weather Bug for years now, as i find it to be the most accurate here in NY

    • D.B.Evans

I think it depends on your location – I’m yet to find a weather app that’s accurate everywhere I travel on business. What is best in cities may not be as accurate as other options in rural areas, and what works best on west-coast may not be the most accurate in the south-east, etc. I finally settled on Weather Bug because they were one of the two that were most accurate where I lived, and because I liked their refreshed design from a few months back.

  • Favad

Just downloaded from play store. Does not look like the UI shown in the above images. Running 4.3 on my Nexus4.

  • timrcm

Yahoo Weather has looked like this on iOS for nearly a year now, I believe. I’m glad they’ve finally caught up.

  • duke69111

    Who is Yahoo’s weather source?

    • http://www.ginnefine.net Gi_Fine

The Weather Channel. Same exact thing I was thinking.
It looks great so I may switch.

      • aQuickBit

I’m liking the widget style a lot! Looks better than the Sense clock/weather one IMO.

  • Guest

not sure why, i’m guessing i’m doing something wrong, but i just downloaded the app and the UI doesn’t look like the images above. When you click on the link to the Play Store and see the images for the app there they don’t look like the ones above. what gives?

  • @1MPitts

Is this only for 4.3? i still have the old version

    • Halorl

      I’m on 4.3 and still got the old version… I’m guessing it’s a staged rollout…

    • Marco Wirasinghe

      It’s live now.

  • ag

    Does it have radar yet?

    • EdubE24

      The IOS version does..

    • Marco Wirasinghe

  • Dan

Just downloaded from Play Store still old version.

    • viewthis66

ok it’s not just me… i just downloaded it and was like wtf!? haha

    • Halorl

Same here. Gotta love the staged rollouts…

    • Marco Wirasinghe

      It’s live now :)

    • Bill Anderson

I see the update, but I keep getting an “Error downloading “Yahoo….

  • NickA

Loved it when they updated it for iOS a few months back. Been waiting for it on Android. Will look great on my Moto X (or One if VZW ever gets it).

    • Alex

      Switching to android?

      • NickA

Already an Android user since the OG. Just get bored sometimes and use the iPhone while waiting for VZW to get the newest phones 5 months late.

  • AMPthe13th

[Opinion] Ron should have one less app keeping him in iOS land now.

    • aQuickBit

Instead of talking about that, why don’t you say something about the actual app to which the article is written about? This Ron crap adds nothing of value.

      • Guest

Oh I’m sorry. I didn’t realize everything had to be super serious discussion. I was just having fun. And in a way I did say something about the app. I implied that I agree with favorable Kellen’s assessment of the new design by comparing positively it to the iOS version which Ron said he prefers.

          Fair point.

        • michael arazan

It’s called Busting his Balls, mocking someone out of love and respect.
I think Ron, even as an iOS user, has clear and non biased honest opinions and makes very Good points, at times. I may not agree 100%, but his thoughts and opinions here are just and meaningful.

Just downloaded this a few moments ago. Looks promising to be my weather app of the future.

  • JimmyHACK

    iOS7 apps on Android!

    • joseph barrientos

seriously, they’re just too lazy and broke to dev. different versions

    • JimmySACK

This “new” yahoo design has been on iOS 6 for a while.
