Disclaimer: This comment relates only to the commercial, as I’ve never had an HTC phone.

No doubt I’m in the minority here, but I actually think it’s a fairly brilliant commercial. The goal clearly is to get consumers to start thinking about HTC, and I think this ad accomplishes that, by making the actual name the entire focus, and doing so in an entertaining way. The fact that this will prompt some people to start thinking up their own meanings for the HTC acronym makes it memorable in the right way–consumers will remember the actual product/company, not just that they saw a funny ad. That’s about all you can hope to accomplish in a commercial. And I think the Here’s To Change final phrase is a good point for HTC to try to drive home. It reminds me a little bit in that regard of Sammy’s now-iconic anti-iPhone hipster ads that were so effective.

I don’t think the ad is perfect: I don’t think Downey adds anything to it (so I’m not sure why HTC would pay so much for him), and I find the presentation of the different acronym meanings a little confused. But overall I think it’s really effective.

You may now flame away with beside-the-point beefs about HTC battery life/updates/Verizon.

  • Omar Amer

High Tech Camera. Heavy Telephone Case. Hold this Clock.

  • Feed Jake

    Horrible Touch Controls!

  • Tyler Durden

After RDJ made $130+ million for IM and Avengers…why do this crap

    • Cory_S

another 12 million for a few weeks work isn’t a bad deal..

      • Tyler Durden

I don’t think it was just a few weeks. Sure he’s in contract for a few more things.

        • Cory_S

I doubt his actual personal time involved in this will span much more than a few weeks over the life of the contract. He just needs to show up and memorize a few lines, do a few takes then head out.

          • Tyler Durden

But attaching himself to such a company is just weird to me. I’m pretty sure he could afford to buy HTC with the kind of money he has.

          • Cory_S

I can see him aligning himself with the company; masculine metal unibody do anything phones… kind of matches his image. What i don’t understand is him going with something this corny. Apparently he had creative powers on the commercials and veto powers.

          • mustbepbs

Because money? Is it that hard to understand that people want money?

          • Sirx

You do realize that no celebrity in the history of anything ever actually USES the products they hawk, right? They are WAY too rich to be using the same common crap that they’re encouraging us common folk to buy.
He’s an actor. His whole livelihood is “Company throws millions into my double-yachted swimming pool, and I go say these lines for a bit”.

      • T4rd

I think HTC would have been much better off saving the money and doing normal commercials that actually highlights their phone’s features than some cop-out celebrity commercial that does nothing to differentiate their phone from their competitors, then putting that money saved toward their software development and updating their phones in a timely mannor while their current flagship is still 2 revisions behind the latest and 1 revision behind every other comparable phone.

        • Cory_S

I sorta agree with you. On the other hand I think they are trying to buy legitimacy. Their products are fantastic from a build standpoint, but people don’t notice them because they just don’t see them as legitimate competition…they think there must be a catch.

But all the sudden “Tony Stark” is endorsing the company and people may stop and think maybe there is something more to the company then their preconceived assumptions.

But then again they bought Beats for 300 million…so they don’t have the best track record for buying hip stuff to market and making it work.

    • michael arazan

      Hopeless Technology Company

  • There sure are a lot of HTC haters on Verizon. I wonder if their opinion would be any different after they spent a couple weeks with the HTC One.

    • Jordan Webb

A lot of them wanted to.

    • Tirionfive

      11/14/2011 NEVAR FORGET!

(For the uninformed: This date was the release date of the HTC ReZound on Verzion. Arguably one of the worst HTC phones (Both hardware and software wise) Other than it’s older cousin the HTC Thunderbolt)

Yes, I have a grudge against HTC.

      • Under the bridge downtown

Were the phones bad, or the battery life?

        • T4rd

My wife’s Rezound is absolutely horribad. Terrible performance for a dual-core phone with 1GB of RAM and battery life is even worse; like Thunderbolt levels of bad. I’ve repaced the battery hoping that was it, but no, it still only gets maybe 90 mins of screen on time before it’s dead, or 5-6 hours of standby time, doing absolutely nothing. The phone is sleeping properly and everything, but it still gets terrible battery life.

        • Tirionfive

Everything. The battery, The software. Bootlooped like a mofo. Possibly the strongest point was the SLCD (SLCD V1) at 720p, but even that failed with the washed out colors and massive back-light and capacitive button bleed. Heavier than a brick, and thicker on average than the iPhone 3G. It did come with a 16GB internal storage + SD card as well, so I will give them that.

      • Sirx

        But……exploding cities!

    • T4rd

Because all of Verizon’s HTC phones have had horrible software support and/or are horrible phones in general. My wife’s Rezound got ICS (which introduced a lot of performance and battery life issues) around the time JB came out, then Verizon/HTC just forgot about the phone outside of a couple minor security updates.
I’ll consider getting her the HTC One though since that’s not a crappy Verizon exclusive. But the fact that the One is still on 4.1 is not appealing.

      • JoshGroff

Having owned a Rezound, I do agree it was terrible on stock, but with CM10, it actually lasted longer than the G-Nex. (Still doesn’t fix the fact that it was a massive heavy brick, but IIRC it did have a solid metal frame under that plastic exterior.)

      • LionStone

Incredible, T-bolt, Inc 4G, DNA…all stock and all still run fine, a few minor bugs but were fixed with software updates. All have great cameras, great signal/radios/reception, no complaints.

        • T4rd

I’m sorry, but it doesn’t take much to appease you then. With the exception of the DNA, they all have relatively bad cameras. Reception is about the only good thing with most HTC phones. Battery life has been consistantly bad on all of their phones up to the DNA due to them putting really small batteries in their phone, coupled with bad hardware and software.

I’ve never heard of a happy Thunderbolt owner. My wife’s Rezound is almost useless since it is always tied to a charger and is about as slow as my OG Droid was.
