Android Device Manager is Now Live

Screen Shot 2013-08-07 at 10.44.41 AM

The new Android Device Manager service from Google is now live. Introduced last week as a service that would allow you to track lost devices and factory reset them, you can test it out for yourself today. Well, you can test it out assuming you have received the back-end device administrator portion of the service

To check to see that Android Device Manager has been given permission to access your location, you’ll need to open up Settings>Security>Device administrators on your phone. You should see an box that can be checked for “Android Device Manager.” Check that box (to allow for remote wiping) and then head to this Google site.

Screenshot_2013-08-07-10-50-25

Once there, you should be able to access all of your devices via pulldown menu. The current remote options include forcing your phone to ring or erasing your device. But from the Android Device Manager web app, you can change the name of phones, refresh their location, and hopefully pint-point them on a map. I’m personally having issues getting it to locate any of my devices, but I’m assuming that’ll change before long.

Update:  If you are using a Google Apps account, the ADM apparently won’t work. Works flawlessly and quickly when logged in with a Gmail account, though.

Go test it!

Confused! I went through all the instructions and when I log in it tells me I don’t have a device activated but I checked the box in the Device Administrator section. Sigh, that’s why I use Lookout Mobile. Was gonna use this as a back-up but………

    • Tim242

Lookout eats up resources. Have fun with that.

      • jboogie1289

User experiences may vary. It does fine by me and Android normally eats up resources. But thanks for the heads-up.

  • Eric Hauser

My Gnex and N10 show up but my N7 doesn’t. I have N7 setup properly and actually the N10 is at home and the WiFi is off at the moment but it shows in the drop down unlike the N7 which is on my work WiFi. Anyone else seeing this behavior?

  • Blake

@ Kellex B Hey how do I use the service through gmail like you say, I’ve got everything enabled like it should be but no go through the web app. Do I just go to gmail.com on the computer?

  • Chippah

instantly found my Nexus 10, but not my Gnex. BOOO

  • Steve B

An easy way to access this is by going to the Google Play Store homepage, then clicking the gear icon (top right), and then selecting Android Device Manager.

  • kevlar

Even though I have it set in options to be able to wipe, I cant select wipe device. N4 running custom CM10.1

  • RoadsterHD1

ow I have both this and Lookout.

  • RoadsterHD1

It works perfect on my BIONIC.

  • htowngtr

Just scared my wife at home by making the N7 ring.

  • pete grassi

V G-Nex and Asus Transformer both found on the site.

  • IDLE0095

Doesnt show my devices at all. None of them. I have the free goodle apps gmail.

  • Justin Brockie

Works great on my Google Apps account, four devices identified, found and ringing

    • IDLE0095

Thats weird. My google apps doesnt work. Is your paid or free?

  • chris

found my moto razr fast, but a 2.4 mile radius? can’t get a little closer

    • socarwolverine

It doesn’t turn on GPS on my Razr MAXX like it does other phones, this may be your problem too.

  • arthuruscg

not working, no location, and no ringing

  • Jack3D

Funny that Google can do so many amazing things, but they can’t properly do a service like this or allow me to permanently delete devices from Play Store…

  • drose0

All four of my devices showed up perfectly… awesome!

  • Malcolm Love

My friend has both his and my Google account on his phone so he can use my All Access…I forgot this and wondered why I could see a RAZR…..this should be fun.

    • Stephen Bain

      Ring his device! Now!

      • Malcolm Love

I wonder if they’ll expand and let you send custom messages or something like that in the future. Would that I could now…I’d freak him out so hard.

  • circustravis

It sees both of my devices, but “ring device” doesn’t work on my Nexus 7. I wonder if there’s another way to remotely make it signal if I can’t find it in my house?

  • Jaxon Wright

It’s cool, but I’ll stick with Cerberus

  • BeLogical

Works great on mine, that fills one of the biggest holes Android had, especially in the corporate environment.

  • Starkman

Problem is that it will not work if your WIFI blocks push notifications from google like my work does. Needed to turn it off then it found it.

  • Mahercs

Anyone willing to test the erase feature and report back? ;-)

    • PhoenixPath

Not working for me yet on my n10. tried 3 times so far.

  • starnovsky

Works like magic (i.e. locating a phone). Nexus 4 on T-mobile.

  • James_C_L

    Works great! Jk

    • D.B.Evans

It only found me if my screen was on … that’s pretty much useless.

I’m hoping there’s some other variable or setting that changes this; because for now, I can’t see the value in a device manager that can only provide your location if the device is found by someone else, and that someone else tries to login through the lock screen, and if I try to find it while they are at the lock-screen. Too many “if”s in that series of events for now.

    • jboogie1289

Well at least it recognizes your model number. I didn’t even get that.

  • Hohlraum

Appears that it won’t work with google apps accounts unless you have a paid version. uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuggggggggggggggggggh.

    • cbkcc1

      discovered that myself, lamezilla

    • starnovsky

That’s understandable. Google is probably considering this to be an enterprise service.

      • Hohlraum

I assume all these people saying it works in this thread are using regular google accounts so … It works if you use a regular free gmail.com account but not a free google apps account?

        • starnovsky

Yes. Because regular gmail account is for personal use. If you using google apps then Google is considering that you using it for business. And if you using it for business then you better pay for extra features.

          • Michael Quinlan

Of that’s the case, it’s fine – and they should just come out and say it. Until they do, it just gives the appearance of incompetence.

          • Hohlraum

This is pretty par for the course with Google unfortunately. :( I personally would have no problem paying for a couple of the accounts on my domain to be upgraded to Business but not all of them (and that isn’t possible).

          • starnovsky

Try that, guys: “If you’re using a Google Apps account, you will sign in to your My Devices page.” From https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/3265955?p=android_device_manager&rd=1

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

      Damn, you are right.

      • jbegs

How can this be seen through gmail? I have two gmail accounts and can’t access my phone through either one. I tried going to the Play store and accessing the site there. Keeps saying “No active devices.”

        • kidtronic

Me too. Maybe a custom rom has something to do with it

          • WCDave

I’m on a custom rom with my DNA and works ok with my GMail account.

    • icantremember

I added a regular gmail account as a secondary and it seems to work okay via that account.

      • Hohlraum

yeah I was going to try that myself good catch.

    • http://www.toysdiva.com Toys Samurai

Sad, SAD. Combining this with the incompatible Google Now GMail Card (that one doesn’t work even if you use the paid version) and it’s becoming ridiculously clear that Google doesn’t want people using Google App with Android!

    • http://ian.cazabat.com IanCaz

Yeah I’m getting “Google Apps Device Policy is only available for Google Apps Business and Education customers. Please log in with your Google Apps account to access this page.” Was just coming back here to post about this. This sucks!

  • Jorge

My HTC One X+ isn’t locking either, hopefully it’s temporary.

  • Zach Armstrong

    Not working for me

  • Keith0606

currently seems to work on my Nexus 7 and verizon galaxy nexus both running stock

  • Mahercs

Found my Razr Maxx with GPS off within 799 meters, but close enough. Rang like a charm. SWEET! I can now dump SeekDroid…or not.

  • j__h

To get to device administrators, at least on my Gnex:

    Settings->Security->Device Administrators

  • Jeremy Martin

First thing I noticed is that it found my Xoom. I did not enable anything on my Xoom to allow this. I planned to enable this on my Xoom anyways but it still concerns me that by default you are able to track your device. My Razr HD was the same way. Concerning only because of my “tin foil” side that comes out thinking its another way to be tracked by big brother. You should have to opt in..i wonder if there is a way to opt out.

    • Dominick White

I dont know why yours was already enabled, but my droid dna or a friends droid M. Wasn’t, had to go in and enabke them

      • Jeremy Martin

Enable wipe i had to…but not enable a service to allow me to be tracked.

  • Tom Luley

Both devices were found instantly and were spot on. I work in a hospital and they actually got the area of the hospital right. Pretty awesome.

  • Tyler

Neither of my devices shows up. So doesn’t work for me at all. :(

  • jbdan

Works as described thanks guys :)

  • Greg DeBrun

Nice. Would like to see the signal flare feature implemented like that of Lookout. The device sends a last location response just before the battery dies. Useful if you lose the device and realize it AFTER the battery is dead (or if some thief powers it off)

    • TJWaterskier

If you have location reporting and location history enabled in the google settings it might do this already?

  • Tania N

Works like a charm! Thanks Droid Life!

  • duke69111

Worked great for me on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus.

  • http://bjunity.org/ Bill B

So how do you remove a device from the list? (e.g. I gave my old Nexus 7 to my daughter)

    • duke69111

I don’t think you can remove it, but you can hide it:

      https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/2407656?hl=en

      Hope this helps.

      • http://bjunity.org/ Bill B

Yup. That’s it. Couldn’t remember how to get there.

    • Mitch Joa

You mean you don’t want to know where your daughter is at all times? Seems like the overprotective father’s dream :)

    • Philip A. Kaiser

I need to know how to do this also. I flash and wipe a lot and when I go into Google play on a PC, it shows that I have like 10 Nexus devices. I want to remove them entirely from the list.

    • Jorge Leal

you don’t want to know where your daughter is late at night?

    • http://bjunity.org/ Bill B

Y’all clearly don’t have college-age kids. That tablet ain’t going out with her to the clubs at night.

  • Trevor

Very cool! Love that Google has added this feature.

It worked great (both locating and ringing) on my S4.

  • Cory_S

This is a pretty cool backup feature. I prefer the advanced features of third party solutions like Cerberus…but this is super clean.

    • GR

It looks like it works much better than Google’s half-baked effort.

  • Robert Macri

Works fine here… even with the GPS off on the phone.

  • thedonxr

Works great for my GNex running CM10.1

  • tharealoc

Now i can delete avira..only used it as a locator, and it was spotty at that. finally google added this feature

  • Greg

Wont show my Galaxy Nexus on the site. I have enabled the device administrator setting. My Nexus 7 shows up on the site.

    • tyguy829

same. S3 and Nexus 7 show. Gnex does not.

      • Cory_S

Wifes Gnex shows up just fine. She’s at a motel for some reason…odd she should be at work.

        • RoadsterHD1

          LOL,,,, Dammmm…………….

        • Ray Gray

dont worry she will be paid well :)

        • Geekdad

You currently have 69 upvotes. Nice to see both of you getting 69! :b

          **Dammit, someone upvoted!!

        • Higher_Ground

          side job :)

      • Brian Wolfman

My G-Nex shows up (on 4.2.2 CarbonRom)

      • nerds

go into the “google settings” app and go down to “android device manager”…make sure sure both options are ticked off.

        • tyguy829

yep. did that, also enabled it in device administrators. rebooted, toggled airplane mode. nothing.

          • Greg

Same here. Made sure settings were correct in Google Settings and Device Settings. Still no Gnex. Probably just a waiting game at this point.

          • Anon

Location access is on in Google Settings?

          • Greg

Location access is on. Everything is on. Still won’t show.

          • JRomeo

turn on location in both general settings, and then again in google maps settings

          • JRomeo

there’s two different location settings, one inside the main settings, and another inside google maps location settings.

          • Greg

Everything is on in both locations. Not sure what the problem is. Maybe this thing just isnt completely live for all devices yet.

        • http://www.twitter.com/dsilinski slinky317

I don’t even have that listed in Google Settings. It’s in my Administrators page, but not my Google Settings – and it’s not appearing in ADM on the web.

          • Tyler

It only shows one device at a time, there is a dropdown arrow next to the name. Hopefully thats your problem :)

          • http://www.twitter.com/dsilinski slinky317

Nope :(. No dropdown, at least on Firefox on my work PC. Maybe it’ll have one on Chrome when I get home.

        • bionicwaffle

adm isn’t in my Google Settings but I enabled in it Device Administrators and all my location options are enabled.

    • pookietookie

same here. i can ring the device but the site won’t locate it…

    • palomosan

All my devices show up but the option to erase the Gnex it doesn’t activate, it says to check the option on the phone.

Both my N7 2013 and Gnex rang right away.

    • Bootleg Zani

Same here. It will not show my Toro Galaxy Nexus on the site even though the Android Device Manager is listed under Settings > Security > Device Administrators on the G’Nex itself. It lists both my old 16 GB Nexus 7 and my new Nexus 7v2 32 GB. However neither device actually gets located.

    • bionicwaffle

My old Droid X shows up but my Maxx HD will not. The funny thing is I only enabled the Android Device Manager on the Maxx HD.

    • geedee82

I’m seeing my Gnex but not my N7!?

      • Tyler

There is a dropdown menu for multiple devices.

        • geedee82

I’m not seeing a dropdown menu anywhere on mine. Where exactly do you see this?

          • Tyler

If you look at the screenshot at the top of the article there is a arrow to the right of where it says Nexus 7.

          • geedee82

Yeah I don’t have that on mine. Not seeing it in chrome on my desktop or on my tablet. Strange because Google Play has both of my devices registered just fine…

    • Simon Belmont

I see my GSM G’Nex. However, it refuses to locate or ring it.

I’ve tried almost everything I can think of. It’s weird and sort of annoying.

  • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

I can see the GPS icon pop up on my phones almost immediately, but the web app still can’t find it. Ringer works though!

    • gbenj

I don’t see the GPS icon, don’t get the location in the web, and ringer does nothing…. (sad face)

      • MrBigFeathers

        Same here

      • SteveG12543

Same problem here. Have it enabled on both my TF700 and Rezound under Administrators, shows no sign of working at all on either device.

      • drose0

My ringer didn’t work the first time I tried, but after a few minutes I tried again and it rang almost as soon as I clicked the button.

    • NexusPhan69

      No problems here.

    • PhoenixPath

No love on my HTC One or Nexus 10…don’t have the others with me atm. (both on android 4.3 – HTC is GPe and N10 is factory-image)

Tried a factory rest from ADM for my n10…no luck.

Hopefully this is all just “we found it before we were supposed to” issues.

  • Mordecaidrake

I still enjoy Cerberus, that’s my service of choice.

    • Inez_carroll325

      my best friend’s
ex-wife makes $81/hour on the laptop. She has been fired for 8 months but
last month her paycheck was $13003 just working on the laptop for a few
hours. Go to this web site and read more.. http://www.works77.cℴℳ

    • beaumac

Cerberus has much better functionality. I like that it takes photos

      • Alexander H

Cerberus photo feature as well as remote lock, remote unlock, remote screenshot, and able to be bound to rooted ROMs to persist past a factory reset make it leap years ahead of google’s functionality….but being a google service it’ll win with the masses for simplicity.

  • litobirdy

Hmm but need to have access to location in the gps settings. Figured it’d just use 4g/3g location or something

  • TJWaterskier

First try accuracy was 19 meters.. pretty good.. and the ring feature was near instantaneous

  • gbenj

I keep getting “Location unavailable” both my devices have it enabled in google settings on the device…odd and frustrating.

    • Captain Spaulding

Did you go to Settings/Security/Device Administrators and enable it?

      • gbenj

        A) Thats only required for the lock/erase feature.

        B) Yes.

        • nerds

go into the “google settings” app and go down to “android device manager”…make sure sure both options are ticked off…..

          • gbenj

Already did… Still just shows “location unavailable” on the web.

  • Captain Spaulding

Found my One X and Nexus 7 pretty fast.
