moto x wood

Here are the official specs for the Moto X. It’s been a long time waiting for this phone, but we finally have it. It’s coming to the top four carriers, has the ability to be customized to the extreme (starting on AT&T), plus the device comes packed with some great software enhancements for the 10MP back-facing shooter. It will hit the streets sometime late August/early September for $199 on contract for the 16GB variant. $250 on contract for the 32GB version.

  • Charlie R.

It also looks like there is no wireless charging in this phone, but there is in the new Droids.

  • CoCoCalypso

Why oh why did they not go with the $300 off contract price? Even $350 would have been acceptable because its only a small spec bump up from the nexus 4.

  • Chris

This is going to go down as one of the biggest let downs in tech history. Wow Googlerola $200 ON CONTRACT!!! So much for getting away from the carrier model they supposedly hate. I am going to guess that the off contract price is going to be about $600 give or take. Why would anyone pick this over the S4 or ONE? Oh wait you can get it in pink, hobgoblin green,or…… BFD! You want a color; get a case. I want a phone that works well and is cost affordable (off contract) for Verizon is that too much to ask for….apparently it is….well to be fair we don’t know the off contract price yet. Why? Anyone, Anyone, Bueller Anyone

Now hoping the next Nexus will be avail on Verizon.

  • Jason Brown

weight 320 grams? it weighs more than a gnex?

  • Jamie Harrison

Why not go with Droid Mini based on this price and feature set?

    • JD_26

just said this^^ on the other “moto anouncement” thread

      • JD_26

almost same specs for 100 $ less on contract.. edge to edge glass.. thinner…. lighter…. higher ppi.. wireless charging (i think)

        • LionStone

Yep, it seems the mini and maxx both have wireless charging but the ultra not, maybe it was too thin?

  • Ron_Swanson

Why would you choose this over the HTC One? HTC One destroys this phone in so many ways its not funny.

    • Mike

      Same with the Galaxy S4

  • michael curtis

    wish the battery was customizable

  • MikeSaver

exclusives is stupid. I could just buy the phone now, but i guess i have to wait several months for AT&T to stop being dicks about it.

  • Mitchel Dirks

I’d still buy it.. As long as the reviews for it turn out amazing. If the GPE version could be compatible with Verizon then I’ll be definitely sold. Unlocked boot loader (GPE), AOSP, hell yes!

My RAZR M ain’t that bad neither and its only a two month old device (from the time of purchase.)

  • Billy Buttons

Official site says weight is 130G.

  • Dave

Hopefully Samsung employees took precaution and wore adult undergarments today.

    • samari711

It would be embarrassing to piss yourself laughing, wouldn’t it

  • Charlie R.

A potential Google Play Edition would would still run $575-$600 and would still not work on Verizon.

  • MichaelFranz

so wait is the new droid line made in the USA and if not and you buy one instead of moto x does that make you un-american?

    …joking obviously

  • Hayden7200

I’ve been saying this weeks now, this phone is designed for women. It’s a small size and women will really care about the color options where us guys care more about specs. Check out this screen shot I found on the Motorola website.

  • Billy Buttons

All the hoopla seems to be about customization and the fact it’s made in the US. Other than that you’re looking at sub-par specs with a typical price to match. Voice thing sounds like it could be added with a software update. What am I missing?

    • GoBlue

Really, so can anything. Can’t I enable that “eye scrolling” feature with a simple software upgrade, too?

  • joejoe5709

Yup. No surprises here. Still waiting for the next Nexus. I know Nexus phones aren’t always top shelf spec’d so as long as it matches this, we’ll be fine.

Then again… I can’t wait for the reviews. Should be good.

  • Justin Larmay

is this not the droid ultra spec wise minus the on screen keys?

    • samari711

slightly bigger battery, but it’s got the same effective screen size as the Mini

  • AD4

320 grams?? Why is it so heavy?

    • Billy Buttons

      Official site says 130G

    • Kanaga Deepan N

      May be the wooden one…

  • Hatyrei

price is a big disappointment! I guess if it’s Made in U.S.A, we don’t expect much of a better price even for a mediocre specs? How can you stimulate the economy if it won’t sell like pancakes. Making jobs is a good thing. Just bad strategy for Motorola. Hello Moto! :)

  • Billy Buttons

wow, underwhelming. not a horrible device but nothing outstanding about it either.

  • nina

welp….the phone flopped before even being sold.

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

forget the specs, give me a review and then tell me it’s the best plain vanilla android phone. Because it is, i feel it. The hype wasn’t for nothing.

  • boogie_monster

weight: 320 grams???? you probably meant 130-120!

  • Dane Carpenter

only in the US do we have these bs carrier exclusives

  • samari711

Droid mini is $499 off contract, how is the Moto X worth the extra $75?

    • aDROIDfreeworld

because verizon is forced to sell it at a price THEY choose. Thusly, they will make it monetarily stupid to buy one in the first place.

“hey do yall have any moto x phones in stock?”

“yeah bro, but theyre the same phone as the new DROID, and 100 bucks more… Just get the DROID bro!”

      “OK, thats fine…”

Customer gets home: “theres bloatware everywhere!!!”

  • Matthew DiGiacomo

Typical customer – “So what are my options?”

Employee – “Well we have the S4, HTC One and the Moto X. They are all the same price but the S4 and the HTC One have super fast processors and 1080p displays. The Moto X has exactly half these features.”

Customer – “So you recommend the S4 or the One?

Employee – “No of course not! Get the Moto X! You can make it pretty pink and give it a wood backplate!”

    • joejoe5709

Still leaps and bounds better than the iPhone and that’s always a good thing.

      • Matthew DiGiacomo

Well it’ll always be better than the iPhone. I hate Apple lol

      • Maxim∑

Just love how you bring up a year old phone

        ~sent from my nexus 4

        • Tcv4

it’s ok though because this phone has specs from last year.

          • Higher_Ground

            touché

    • GoBlue

Employee: “Well we have the S4, HTC One and the Moto X. They…

Customer: ..ooh! The colors! Can I customize my own?

Employee: Yes, but the pixel display is 1080…

Customer: And does it do that thing with the voice telling it stuff to do?

Employee: Yes, but… eh- whatever. Get yourself a Moto X.

      • https://plus.google.com/114483312559013915960/ Timoh

I disagree with the sarcasm in your post. The Moto X is more optimized and will likely have fewer bugs/issues. Also, the most important part(IMO), dual MIMO antennas. I also like the size much more than the latest phablets.

I’d buy the Moto X before either of those phones. I probably wont buy any of them though. They really did drop the ball with this ATT exclusivity and higher than expected price tag.

        • GoBlue

I completely agree with you on all counts. What I was trying to communicate was that I think this will sell a lot better than most tech guys think. I would have gotten it if it came customized on verizon in the $300 price range without a 2-year contract.

          • https://plus.google.com/114483312559013915960/ Timoh

Ah, I see. Well, maybe I’ll get lucky and be able to pick one up on Ebay in a couple months.

I can’t afford to drop unlimited. I’m using anywhere from 7-13GB per month, mostly just from streaming music in the car. Would be nice to finally drop this G-Nex. It’s always getting overly hot and doesn’t hold on to the LTE signal very well in my area anymore. Once the LTE started to get more crowded my speeds took a huge dive and connectivity suffered. The one thing I don’t like about the google play music service is that I’m getting low bitrate music a lot, even with high quality selected. I’m guessing it’s sensing the connection speed and sending lower quality songs when it sees it’s too slow.

          • Roberto Sanchez

HBO Go and Xbox Live … I cannot give up unlimited with verizon … just can’t ….

          • System Abuser

            STOP TETHERING FOR EVERYTHING!!!

          • Roberto Sanchez

I have terrible internet service at my apartment complex. I can’t even load youtube videos on my computer. It has to be done!

          • MacArthur Lingenfelter

So you’re the douche that makes data expensive for the rest of us. Thanks a lot, ass.

          • https://plus.google.com/114483312559013915960/ Timoh

No, realistically it doesn’t cost Verizon any more money to supply him with 100GB than it does to supply you with 2GB. Its just greed. Do you think they pay a GB fee to the internet overlords? As if they are metered like a water/sewer bill? Or that data somehow magically causes physical wear and tear on their servers?

          • Sonnyrock76

Totally off topic but are you tired of hearing about Jadeveon Clowney yet? Lol

          • GoBlue

Haha not really. I know when to give props for a nice hit. And I am happy I got to see it live.

          • Sonnyrock76

Well at least you’re a good sport about it. I’m a die hard Gamecock fan myself from just outside of Myrtle Beach SC. Junior Hemingway is from my hometown of Conway SC. Watched him play highschool ball every Friday night.

    • AxemRed

It is also smaller and potentially has better battery life. If could potentially have better graphics performance too with the same GPU as the other only having to push 720 instead of 1080. The active screen thing is also unique. I think it will compete but in different areas.

  • moelsen8

this is a huge let down for us nerds. moto fail. bad moto!

    • MikeCiggy

But if they market it rite this could mean big things for Android itself. Not for us nerds, but for the rest of the mobile users that want pretty phones.

      • moelsen8

yeah, for anyone still chained to a carrier with an upgrade coming up in the near future, this is pretty baller.

again, another case of out of control hypebeastin’

  • j

$575 for 16gb off contract! Confirmed by moto on Google plus!

    • ranlil

      UGH!
Edit: That means about $625 for the 32

    • j

Will be well over $600 after tax -

    • aDROIDfreeworld

and Verizon bends over more customers again!

  • omgitzjose

If it was waterproof I’d be all over it. I guess I’ll just get a life proof case for my iPhone till someone finally makes a nice waterproof phone! Hate worrying about my phone at the beach or in the snow.

    • joejoe5709

Samsung Galaxy Active. Ditch the iPhone.

      • Franklin Ramsey

Although the Galaxy Active isn’t waterproof… so there is that.

  • Tyler Bell

I love how fast everyone jumped ship on this phone. I can’t believe so many people bought into the crap motorola tried to sell.

    • Steve B

Seriously? We knew everything we heard today long ago. Did people expect this phone to be some sort of mind blowing savior of your mobile life?

      • Tyler Bell

Have you looked at any article comments as of late? I’m pretty sure someone compared this phone to the messiah a few months back.

        • Steve B

I know, I’ve followed this pretty close. That person you speak of was a f****** idiot.

      • kixofmyg0t

Yes. Somehow people expect it to be free off contract with a 2.2Ghz Snapdragon 800 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and a SD card slot.

Wait til things calmdown and Kellen reviews it.

        • Steve B

This phone will sell amazingly well with the average customer, but obviously not with tech nerds.

Performance will be great, camera will be awesome and they knocked it out of the park with design. This phone will be fine.

        • Tyler Bell

Yeah, this thing will still have good sales numbers, but it will be trash talked for awhile on tech sites until no one cares because some other manufacturer has promised the best phone ever made.

      • samari711

I didn’t necessarily expect 200 off contract, but I expected the pricing to make some semblance of sense. when compared to the Droid phones it doesn’t make any, unless there’s some amazing feature of the X that hasn’t been talked about publicly.

      • duke69111

Not at all, but I think a lot of people were hoping/wishing for something surprising. When that didn’t happen, they bailed.

    • Zach Davis

You should give me your S4 :D

      • Tyler Bell

Hah, nice try. I’m very happy with my investment. I’ve been screwed by Moto too many times. There was no way I was falling for this trap.

    • brkshr

The only thing that has changed since yesterday is the fact that we know the carrier pricing. So what crap did Motorola try to sell? Everything that has been said has been a leak or a rumor & you all bought into a $300 price tag for some reason.

  • Ahsan

Will we be able to trade in old Motorola phones for a discount? Can I trade in my RAZR HD to get a discount on this?

  • jhlinka

    holy heavy phone

    • Jack Hoffman

      Should be 130grams…

      • jhlinka

Yea 320grams seemed to be a bit off…

  • Robert Macri

Is the LG Optimus 2 coming to Verizon?

    • justin

It’s the LG G2 and presumably yes.

  • Razma

    …Guess I’ll just get back to work….

  • bd1212

The only thing giving me hope that it’ll have a somewhat-low off-contract price is Dennis Woodside’s comment that he made at the All Things D conference. He said he doesn’t understand why manufacturers must charge such high prices for off-contract phones and questioned why they need such huge margins. He said the Moto X would be priced competitively and that Motorola didn’t need such huge margins. Then again, though, going based off what was announced today, I’m not expecting much. If this is $300-$400 off contract, I’m still buying, but if it’s $500-$600, there’s no point.

    • Robbie Gerling

might as well get a droid maxx or a GS4 for that cost honestly

      • bd1212

That’s what I’m saying, man! I don’t understand how a huge company like Motorola doesn’t understand this. Why buy a mid-range phone for $500-$600 when you can get a considerably faster, higher-end phone for the same price? This phone needs to be $300-$400 off contract if Motorola wants it to go up against the Galaxy S4, HTC One, or iPhone 5.

  • Phones Magoo

The more you customize the outside of the phone, the less the resale value, right?

    • ranlil

      I wouldn’t buy to resell…. If I did I wouldn’t custimize.

    • moelsen8

joe america doesn’t know that dirty little secret.

  • ranlil

    Bummer…..

  • beng8686

    Note ³ or gs4 here I come

  • Jeff Helget

Well G-Nex… looks like it’s you and me for the foreseeable future…

EDIT: take with a grain of salt, but P3Droid is reporting off-contract prices of $575 and $630 respectively. Officially seals it. I’m out. What are you thinking, Moto….

    • Sharkh20

Just wait for the Verizon nexus 4 2.0 /s

      • joejoe5709

Agreed. If Verizon gets it… which at this point is a long shot.

        • Jeff Helget

I think you missed the sarcasm tag at the end of his comment.

Verizon will never see another Nexus. Mark my words.

          • NIGHTSCOUT

            Never say Never…..

          • Steve Blais

NEVER NEVER NEVER (sorry just had to!)

          • NIGHTSCOUT

You just opened Pandora’s box :D

          • Marikel

Until they turn on VoLTE, that is. Supposedly VZW won’t be allowed to lock out unlocked devices after that. Not because. it’s impossible, but because they’re simply not going to be allowed to. Here’s to hoping we get another Nexus in 2015.

          • Steve Blais

nore (sp) will would I want one.. the gnex .. had the worst ..(fill in the blank____________) and also was super slow to get firmware updates (for the select few non-rooters out there).. and I could go on.. definitely not a true “nexus” experience.. so ..AT&T might have my business as they’ve successfully nabbed htc one first and I’m beginning to think that by the time the HTC One/Max whatever Big red will call it comes out.. At&t will have the HTC Two :P fark u Verizon!

    • http://brgulker.wordpress.com/ brgulker

My S3 on CM10.1 >>>>>>>> my old GNex.

    • LiterofCola

lol, if you’re on Verizon and looking for a 32 gb, might as well get the Maxx for $69 more.

      • Steve Blais

S3 costs only $30 (upgrade fee) on big red now.. back to school special

  • Matthew DiGiacomo

How can they possibly justify these spec’s at this price point…Moto is dead.

    • Jack Hoffman

Thought they were Apple and the sheep would just take it…

      • Matthew DiGiacomo

This phone is going to bust. What non-hardcore phone shoppers are going to even know/care/take the time to go on Motorola’s website and customize their phone?

  • Josh Flowers

Miracast enabled, too. that’s a big selling point–at least it was with me & the S4.

  • #dontwantthemotoxanymore

    Verizon wins!

  • Charlie R.

Again, the 32gb version is also an AT&T exclusive!!!

    http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/01/moto-x-official/

    • AxemRed

Well we can’t having competing with the DROID Maxx can we?

  • UNCNYY04

Child please. I will never get my hopes up for rumors ever again. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice f that because it’s not going to happen again.

  • slider112

Seems like a decent upgrade from the GNex, with very similar form factor, if one is so inclined…

    • Matthew DiGiacomo

      A decent upgrade for a 20-month old phone……

      • slider112

        Exactly… it’s held up remarkably well…

  • Will

Why are they not giving an off-contract price?

    • #dontwantthemotoxanymore

Cause you probably can’t afford it

      • Robert Macri

        Stop talking to yourself Will.

    • thebigmann

I’d rather not know. Today has been hard enough on all of us.

  • Fahad Beg

The phone is said to be smooth by everyone thats used it. I dont understand why people are freaking out. and if you really expected a phone built in the USA to be $300 off contract, then you need to look somewhere else.

    • housetiger77

I was thinking the same thing, but was waiting for someone else to say it. Why in the hell would they offer a cheap off-contract price knowing that they can charge $600 and people will still buy it.

      • http://androidforums.com/members/kwest12.html kwest12

The primary reason would probably be to gain market share back from Samsung (and Apple, I guess)? At a lower price, it really could have gotten into a lot more hands than it will now. I imagine most of the experiences would be good ones and would have people coming back for the next iteration of this phone in a year or two.

      • Higher_Ground

Just a guess, but I’d venture to say they’d sell more than twice as many @ $300 vs. $600. I can’t imagine full price purchases make up more than a very small % of sales right now, so they probably don’t realize the potential that so many people are in wrt to wanting out of contracts.

  • Tom Luley

Wait, not only did this let everyone down with the pricing, but it doesn’t even launch with 4.3?! What the hell…

    • joejoe5709

As if there’s a major difference between 4.2.2 and 4.3 especially in phones. The Moto X is likely to get 4.3 relatively quickly.

      • Blue Sun

I’m sure ALL the carriers will be providing timely updates for this device…

    • http://androidforums.com/members/kwest12.html kwest12

No sdcard, no removable battery, locked bootloader… This is not a power user’s phone (or an Android enthusiast’s for that matter).

      • duke69111

I hope they didn’t spend much time coming up with this scheme…

        • michael arazan

So this is Google’s Direction with Motorola? They must need a huge tax right off this year

  • MikeCiggy

    WHERE IS THE OFF-CONTRACT PRICE!?

    • SA_NYC

      You know there’s a reason they’re not leading with this…My guess: $600.

      • http://androidforums.com/members/kwest12.html kwest12

More for the 32GB version if I had to guess. Customization may even be more. Don’t worry though, Verizon won’t even launch with the custom version. smh.

        • Lucky Armpit

I’m thrilled to hear there is a 32GB version – I could give a flip about customization. But if the 32GB Moto X is the same hardware and basically the same skin as the Droid Maxx, but the Maxx is larger and comes with more battery for only another $50, why would I buy this?

          • http://androidforums.com/members/kwest12.html kwest12

The only reason I could think of is the potentially better developer support. Unfortunately, this phone is likely to get more attention than the Droid line because of the number of carriers.

          • Franklin Ramsey

Well the Droid Maxx is on Verizon, the 32GB Moto X is only on AT&T.

          • Lucky Armpit

Can you please link to that information? Verizon has not officially announced anything yet.

          • Franklin Ramsey

Well Verizon’s twitter account says customizations won’t be coming till later in the year and everything I’ve read so far says the 32 GB option is a customization feature to start out with.

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

forget off contract, where’s the play store price…?

      • Steve B

Sadly, doesn’t look like it’ll be available on the Play Store.

        • PhillipCun

Uh yes it will. GPE will come later.

          • Steve B

Don’t cry when it doesn’t happen.

          • PhillipCun

ME? Cry?? You’re the one that said it won’t be available at the Play Store. Every tech blog already stated its coming, even this one. I’m just here to prove you wrong. Did i just do that?

          • Steve B

Did you leave a T off the end of your name?

          • PhillipCun

and you’re 12? LOL so i proved you wrong and now you’re crying. good.

          • LiterofCola

Did you leave a “itch” from the end of yours?

          • Charlie R.

That will still run for $575 and not work on Verizon.

        • Daeshaun Griffiths

sadly, Engadget said there’s a GP version. I trust them and their sources.

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Look at the Google Play GS4 and HTC ONE…. I don’t think the pricing will be any different

    • Jeff Helget

      P3Droid claims $575 for 16GB and $630 for 32GB

      • sc4fpse

        Ouch. My heart just broke.

        • Steve B

Yeah, that’s a big ouch considering what you get compared to the others.

  • onDroid

    Off contract?
