Koush Creates Chromecast App That Allows Sharing of On-phone Video and Pictures to Your TV

At this time, it’s no secret that Chromecast is certainly somewhat limited in functionality. Netflix, YouTube, and select Google services are a great start, but we would love to see some of our favorite apps from Twitter to photo sharing services join the party. Thankfully, Google has already pushed out a Google Cast API to developers, so that in the near future, we’ll see apps feature the “cast” button allowing for mirroring of their apps’ content to TVs.

Koush, of ClockworkMod and ROM Manager fame, is already preparing his first cast-ready app for the moment developers are ready to release them.

In a quick post or two to Google+, he showed off a video and photo sharing app that takes your locally stored phone files and displays them instantly to your TV. In his short clip, Koush records a quick 17-second video, jumps into the stock Android gallery, presses the “Share” button, and then chooses his Chromecast. The video that he just recorded begins playing almost immediately.

He says that he is also working on sharing music and playlists as well, but again, none of his work can be released at this time.

As you can imagine, this is only going to get more exciting as developers build in cast support for their apps. Any in particular that you would love to see with cast integration?

I would like to see Android Keylime Pie support Chrome Cast so that we don’t have to rely on developers to include it in individual apps anymore.

  • M.D.69

I can already do this with the doubletwist app through PS3, or directly to TV with DLNA. why do I need chromecast.

  • sk3litor

I could just see someone going to the bar and sneeking thier chromecast into the tv and playing some naughty home videos

  • steve

MLS Matchday & HBO Go are two that come to mind.

  • Armus

Anything Google can do, a dev can fix

  • joejoe5709

Alright. That’s pretty cool. This is a step in the right direction for Chromecast showing our photos, videos and other contect. Koush, you’re the best. Holy moly…

  • Itchy_Robot

Awesome! It would be nice to have a built in playlist/queue of some sort too. For example, create a playlistlist or queue of videos and pictures, then share them to the Chromecast.

  • Zach Davis

Nice! More and more awesome stuff headed our way 😀

    Love your dog, great work.

    Ian B

  • Raven

Hopefully his app works on my Droid 4. Like was reported with the Moto RAZR only YouTube currently works for me, but not Google Play Movies or Play Music.

  • bogy25

…just the beginning – Android is a wonderful thing yes it is

  • MacNificent

this was pretty cool watching the video on my tv as I commented here. I love me some chromecastin. lookin forward to the future developments!

  • turdbogls

well now i pretty much HAVE to buy this thing:P

    • Curtis

      …in three months!

  • KleenDroid

    Koush is the man.

  • Joshua Bailey

MLB.tv and NFL Sunday Ticket would be sick.

    • LP @ThisisEther

    • Aaron Clow

This is the reason I bought it, but don’t know if it will work (but I got in on the Netflix deal, so at $11, I figured it was worth a shot). I buy Sunday Ticket every year, but also have to buy the preseason NFL games on NFL.com and I’d love to be able to watch them on my TV instead of on my tablet or computer. I’m hoping I can Chromecast the games this year. August 9th is coming up soon!

      • UseTheInternet

How about saving a TON of money and just streaming them online?

        Example: http://ilemi.pe/

        • Aaron Clow

Preseason is only $15 with a coupon (DirecTV will give you free Sunday Ticket every year if you call and ask for it nicely). Have you TRIED some of those free sites? You’ll spend an hour trying to get a solid stream, and even then it has foreign characters all over the screen, and cuts out all the time and most definitely isn’t HiDef. BTDT. And I just tried NFL preseason live with my Chromecast, and it works! Awesome!

    • AnotherAndroidKid

MLB.tv doesn’t even run on 4.3 yet. (video)

      • Joshua Bailey

I know and it pisses me right off. I have written a few scathing emails for MLB At Bat 13 for Android. It is totally unacceptable how development is going with Android compared to iOS. Live video doesn’t even work on my Nexus 10 yet. ANGRY!

        • AnotherAndroidKid

I’m stuck watching it on my TF201 where it wonders for 10 minutes where i’m located before loading.

          • David Parrella

Heheh, just sold mine for a Nexus 7 😉

    • Vim Mahadevan

I think you can do this right now. Check out the Madden NFL 25 deal on Amazon that includes a year of free online NFL Sunday Ticket. Its $100 bucks and then $35 for the Chromecast and you are golden.

  • AnotherAndroidKid

So ideally, i can use this app to play full length movies i’ve ripped to SD?

    This is becoming awesome.

  • KIP

    • ddh819

this, all the sports apps with streaming video

  • jnt

For someone in an iOS house watching Airplay constantly impress with our kid pics/vids, this is great news… been waiting for this ever since Chromecast was announced. The CEC functionality makes it even more handy!

  • Sean

I know this will never happen but an NPR music app on android with a cast button would be the dream!

    • ddh819

why not? it would make sense to enable it.

  • EC8CH

    • MotoRulz

Got my Chromecast yesterday. I don’t think I’ve ever spent $35 that has so much potential. I think that’s what makes it so exciting.

      • EC8CH

It also helps that the Movie and TV distribution system is obviously lagging behind what is possible with today’s technology.

Chromecast makes some big improvements to the UI problem of video over the internet on TV. The biggest problems yet to be solved are in opening up the content distribution problems.

      • Savan Ghetiya

when you think about the things you spend more than $35 on in daily life, like gas or lunch for 2 people.. this is pretty darn awesome at $35

    • Tyler Mick

This post has so much win.

  • Verizon

An app that will just work like HDMI mirroring would be amazing for games and apps that will probably never see chromcast.

    • michael steinmetz

The biggest thing now is the lag for mirroring screens mhl and such still seems to be the way to go for games

      • Verizon

I use that, but I’d love to go wireless with it. I’m actually thinking about just hacking a PS3 controller.

        • Bigwavedave25

Do you mean like using the SIXAXIS Controller app, or something different? I use that one, works beautifully.

          • Verizon

Yes, that is what I’m referring to.

    • Bigwavedave25

Yes, this would be the ultimate… one app for mirroring. And a second for casting in the background for movies, etc.

  • SchwannyT

I’d love to see Google+. I know its weird, but all my pictures are already backed up there…

    • Jason Downing

Your phone doesn’t sync with Picasa? If so, then Koush’s app would probably work being that it looked like you could share from the gallery.

    • thebigmann

Photo Spheres that can be scrolled on the TV via the mobile device would be awesome!

  • MK17

Yes! It’s great to see such quick development on this when the Nexus Q was such a bust. Looks like this really will be a hit.

  • Wolfpack93

I see always telling my kids to pick up their socks is a pointless effort.

    • Jason Downing

If they’re become as successful as Koush is, I think you can overlook that minor detail

  • Verizon

This is all excellent, but it needs a Verizon logo on it.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

    WOW! Here we go!

  • TMKvamme

I would love a simple way for it to play movies off my Western Digital MyBookLive

    • Kenny Griffin

  • Eddie R

chrome for android. i’m really suprised that wasn’t something they wanted to show off… perhaps showing how chromecast would automatically switch tabs from mobile to desktop.

    • EC8CH

streaming chrome tabs has some pretty hefty system requirements (2ghz + core i5), my guess is mobile devices don’t have the processing power?

      • Eddie R

what i’m imagining wouldn’t be any different that an MHL/HDMI out. i get that chromecast allows you to stream something to a TV while accessing the rest of your tablet. but i think a simple phone/tablet mirror option would have been pretty slick.

  • cloverz7

    XBMC For sure.

  • Kyle Cassidy

Google Hangouts would be fun. Have a video call using your tv, just like the future we were all promised.

    • Jason Downing

would be kind of a funky experience though. trying to hold the phone so that people can see/hear you, but then looking at the screen to see everyone else. I don’t know.

      • PhoenixPath

Place phone on stand in front of TV.

        • Jason Downing

I honestly don’t think it would be that simple. What kind of stand? Are you going to be sitting on your couch or a chair? how you gonna get it to sit at the right level? Still going to be a little bit awkward. Doable… but awkward

          • PhoenixPath

Turn on the front-facing camera. Prop the stand up however you need to in order to get a decent view of the couch.

Just not seeing the difficulty here. Maybe it’s just me…

          • SchwannyT

I’ve done a similar thing using a laptop and TV when people had kids overseas. Its really annoying to talk to people that aren’t “looking” at you. If you sat the tab in your lap and watched the TV it’d be just like talking to someone’s chin. Even having the camera on the “left” monitor while you watched the right one looks like they are doing something else.
And if you set your tab next to the TV so it looked like your were talking to them just think how good you’ll look on that sweet short throw camera….

To sum up.. Its just not as cool as it sounds.

          • PhoenixPath

“To sum up.. Its just not as cool as it sounds.”

            …for those looking for problems.

          • SchwannyT

No I’m just sharing my experience (I didn’t even mention the mic issues). If it was possible I’d love to see it, but this is how I’d use it:
I would sit and talk on the tablet as normal, but what I see would be mirrored on the TV. (And lag be damned). I’m undecided where I’d want the audio to go….

          • MacNificent

            use your laptop

          • Jason Downing

            Boom… good idea sir haha

          • MacNificent

why thank you!. Im trying to figure out a way to get it to work. But i dont believe its considered a chrome tab… what to do? what to do?

  • Irish Cream

Anything that could let you use your phone/tablet as a controller while you play games on the scren

  • cpuangel

When can devs start releasing apps? I must have missed that..

    • Jason Downing

Great question. i wasn’t aware either.

    • jnt

Forgive my ignorance, but are devs not allowed to release apps with the chromecast api yet? (besides the already supported ones) Or was this a joke that went over my head… 🙂

    • cns2007

I guess after Google removes the “Beta” designation from the SDK. Gives them a chance to work out bugs.

    • thebigmann

Right now, Google has only released a preview SDK that may change significantly before the official release of the SDK. Until then, Google is requiring a written agreement to publish apps using the Chromecast.

They better finalize this quick, it doesn’t make sense to lock down app availability for a commercial device.

      • michael arazan

Would be great to mirror your phone or tablet to the TV like my hmi/hdmi adapter I use to mirror my GNex to the TV to watch movies, play games, use apps, search the net. Chromecast needs to do all those things, or maybe google could just release an Android dongle.
