Google Reportedly Testing “Hyperlocal” Google Now Card

nexus 7 google now

Google Now already shows a lot of cards to users. There are cards for sports, weather, nearby places and so much more. There is currently a national news card, but nothing that focuses on news that is happening in your own neighborhood. According to Quartz, Google has confirmed to them that they are working on a “hyperlocal” Google Now card, capable of bringing users news that is based on the time of day and their current location.

So far, it is reported that the card is up and running internally at Google, but is still in early beta stages. As for when it will be available for all, there’s no say. One Googler touched on what the company is looking to accomplish with this new hyperlocal feature:

It teaches me things about my neighborhood. For example, I found out Miss Mexico came to my son’s school, I saw that Chipotle was giving out burritos, and someone was stabbed in the park near my house. It’s very, very targeted to you and your interests.

If Google Now starts telling me where I can get free food, then this sounds like my kind of card. Fingers crossed.

    Wow Google!

“If Google Now starts telling me where I can get free food, then this sounds like my kind of card. ”

Or where I can get a good stabbing in.

I wonder if an article’s “location” is simply based on the location of the publication, like “news near you” in google news or perhaps the city in the dateline? Or is it more granular like this in development project that identifies sometimes many locations in an article: http://www.pointsmentioned.com

I think it will be helpful for us

I love how there’s two good things (miss mexico and free burritos) and then someone gets stabbed.

It’d be nice if Google would stop giving me directions to everything I search for. Just because I’m looking at used boats doesn’t mean I need directions to the boat shop right now. Or I look something up for work and there are directions to that thing. Or telling me about Ford stocks when I accidentally hit “F + enter” on my computer browser, expecting it to come up with Facebook, but it comes up with a Google search for F, and now I have Ford stocks on my Google now forever. Needs a better filtering algorithm, methinks.

You can disable individual notifications like that (or just swipe them away). There are actually quite a few settings in the Search app.

Gives me hope for a Pizza Tracker card…

Free burritos, Miss Mexico, and a stabbing. Coincidence? I think not.

It’ll come this seasong. they added NCAA basketball at the beginning of the season….I’m guessing they will do the same for football.

Ugh. As if my battery life on JB wasn’t bad enough.

I’ll be uncheckin’ that option the moment she updates. Yep.

    • Justin W

Battery life is more dependent on the device your using. I don’t have any issues with Now and my HTC One (or my Nexus 4, for that matter), and I have anywhere from 5-10 cards show for me.

      • MrBunster

Be that as it may, my GS3 battery life is poop lately.

        It’s poop, Justin. Poop.

        • Justin W

Lol. Don’t take this the wrong way, but you have a removable battery, why don’t you use it?

It might not be great, but I don’t believe Now is the cause of it. Check your processes and see what’s draining it most of the time – usually it’s a game or other app that’s forcing itself to be in the “foreground”, prioritizing it on processing power even when it’s not needed.

          • MrBunster

After that recent update (perhaps that map one), my life went down to about 6-8 hours. Before that, I was able to get a good 12-14. I’m using BBS and Dr. Power to try and track down the culprit, but I honestly may resort to a hard reset. I tried several combinations of location settings, cache wipes, battery pulls. It’s sad to watch my battery % drop in real-time.

But why waste any more time with it if I’m gonna by this handset anyways? Meh. Hopefully it doesn’t cost too much more than a used GS3…

Did anyone else double take at:
“and someone was stabbed in the park near my house.”
    Followed immediately by:
“It’s very, very targeted to you and your interests.”
What…what does this “Googler” do in his off hours, exactly…

  • Trevor

So, it’s the Creepy Card then?

  • Mike Orson

I was looking for the best local place to be stabbed and now I know! Oh and free burritos!

    • Sirx

Save some time and do them both. Won’t tell you in what order, though (Hint: It starts with the stabbing!)

      • Justin W

So… Stabbed with a burrito? Hopefully it’s not freshly micro’d – that might hurt :(

  • EdubE24

    Chipotle giving out free burritos….SOLD!!!

    • Omar

      your anus hates you

    • Verizon

Sold? I thought they were free?

      • EdubE24

Alright a free stabbing of Miss Mexico at my son’s school while eating a burrito…SOLD!!!

  • Silver Veloz

Ha Ha – free burritos. I’m using Google Now more and more….and I’m really liking it. I thought originally, I would have no need. But now it’s kinda fun and I look at it all the time.

  • Capt. Crunch

That’s pretty cool, every time I receive an update to Google Search it’s like getting a gift from Google.
