Live: Google’s Breakfast With Sundar Pichai, Likely the Nexus 7 and 4.3 Unveiling

Screen Shot 2013-07-24 at 6.08.01 AM

Who wants breakfast? How about a side of Android 4.3 with your sunny-side-up new Nexus 7? At Google’s planned breakfast event with Android and Chrome boss Sundar Pichai that is taking place this morning, we may be snacking on both, along with some Chrome news as well (Chromecast?).

We’re here in San Francisco to join in on the festivities, so whatever is announced, will be seen here at DL. And unlike yesterday’s get-together with Verizon, this one is streamed live for the world to see. Yes, that means you are coming along for the ride.

Get your bibs on, it’s time for a Google event!

The event kicks off at 9AM Pacific (12PM Eastern).

Google Play Games app is live (link is broken for now):
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.play.games

Or you can try to tell it to install to your device by scrolling down here and clicking “Free” and installing. It didn’t go to my phone, yet:https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Google+Inc.

    • Robert Macri

Was just able to download it from the Play Store on my phone.

    • David Parrella

      Yup, works now!

    • Steve Benson

I used Chrome-to-Phone to send it to my GS3 and it installed perfectly.

  • Steve Benson

Got my Chromecast ordered. Let’s hope it ships smoother than the N7 last summer…

  • coolsilver

Looks like I need a new TV, New Chromecast and Nexus 7. Ugh there goes 6 months of pay.

  • Adam S.

I wonder if GTV will be updated to work similar to the Chromecast since it can already play Youtube from device to TV. Or will I be required to get a Chromecast for this functionality

  • steveliv

just ordered a chromecast for my mom. We gave her a N7 for Mothers Day, and the chromecast will be an awesome addition for her.

  • Jackson

    Did it just break?

  • David Parrella

Looks like I’m gonna order through Amazon (Prime) and cancel my Google Play Chromecast order :P

    • EC8CH

nice to be able to buy it on amazon… if only it would stream amazon video :-(

      • Raj Bhatt

If you play Amazon video on your laptop, you can just press the cast button.

    • David Verba

When will they put it on Amazon?

      • David Parrella

They said sometime today. I’m also going to call my local Best Buy just to make sure it’s not actually just there, if so I’ll go in and buy it.

    • steveliv

is it for sale on amazon?

  • viewthis66

    just bought Chromecast. sweet.

    • NexusPhan69

The purchase process worked so smoothly. I couldn’t believe it.

    • Matt Upton

Me too! Gonna sell out so fast

    • Kevin B

      Me too

    • ReturnOfTheMack

Same here. I was thoroughly impressed with how easy that was. Awesome that I just bought one as they’re announcing it live.

  • Pedro

When does the source code come out?

  • Shane Redman

    just bought my 2 chromecasts

  • Jackson

Now the tab feature is what I want!!!!!! Soooo bad Google Boxes don’t work for browsing at all lol I cant wait eeeeekkkk

  • Matt

    My reaction to chrome cast:

  • Josh C

Will Chromecast benefit smart tvs? Or will it just make non-smart ones, smart?

  • http://Twitter.com/ContestsAccount bigrob60

    Just ordered my chromecast!

  • Robert Macri

Just placed my order for Chromecast! Google Play

  • fillyo75

And all Galaxy Nexus versions but Toro get 4.3….

    • Pedro

Well, not the Sprint version, either

  • ANGRYVERIZONCUSTOMER

YEA ANDROID 4.3 !! YET ANOTHER UPDATE VERIZON ISNT GONNA PUSH OUT WOOHOO

    • ToddAwesome

      go. leave. bye.

      • angryverizoncustomer

Its true . sorry Verizon worst at updating android os . is Android OS and new phones exciting YES , is it exciting being stuck with verizon NO

  • Dan

Does this mean since the n7 will have multi carrier support that we can assume the next nexus phone will have it also? meaning will it be on verizon?

  • kyle

is chromecast a usb or HDMI plugin?

    • ToddAwesome

I believe he said you plug it into any HDMI port on your tv

      • Raj Bhatt

Just bought one on the play store. 35 bucks!

        https://play.google.com/

        • zurginator

That would be worth it for music alone if I could plug it into my speakers….

      • Kie

It is powered by usb. SO it will use up two ports

    • EC8CH

looks like HDMI. must have a usb power port you plug in seperately

      • zurginator

HDMI 1.4 provides power I do believe.

        • EC8CH

I thought I heard him say “powered by usb”

and I thought MHL was required to provide power through an HMDI port

        • EC8CH

          yep… there’s a usb power port

          • ToddAwesome

            bah, and there’s the rub.

          • EC8CH

they could have gone MHL like the roku stick… but that would severely limit potential customers.

      • steveliv

wouldn’t you be able to use the tv usb port (if it has one)?

    • anezarati

if you look at the chromecast page one the things included in the box is a “HDMI extender.” what exactly is that?

  • ToddAwesome

    Chromecast? TAKE MY MONEY!

    • zurginator

      Makes me wish I had a tv….

      …yeah, I’m that guy.

      • ToddAwesome

You can queue up a days worth of music videos! It’s like what Mtv was, 25 years ago.

      • michael arazan

You have a PC you can still and probably are streaming media, get rid of your pc and tv and you are that guy

  • zurginator

    I want my system update nao! <_<;;

  • Tyler Durden

Bout time we get native 1080p resolution

  • Ian

Bionic: “Derrr….4.3 is just a maintenance update” Right, restricted profiles and OpenGL/ES 3.0 is maintenance. /sarc

    • Thomas O’Brien

      You forgot Per Sarge

  • Nw_adventure

I would upgrade to the N7 Part 2 if the low volume out issue was fixed…

  • Zach B.

Universal LTE chip? I KEEP THROWING MONEY AT THE SCREEN. NOTHING IS HAPPENING.

  • Mark Roan

N7 is Verizon compatible. Shut up and take my money!

  • King Lo

Guessing Moto X is gonna have that universal LTE chip as well.

    • Robert Macri

But the CDMA/GSM chip will have to be different.

  • Alex Goings

Lunch break at work, watching google stream, eating a lunchable. Great day.

    • TuckandRoll84

That does it. I’m going to have to start bringing lunchables to work.

    • CasperTFG

      Stealing from the kids?

  • Ian Smith

    “Tias!” …really?

  • techman01

Google live stream of the event:

  • Steve Benson

Matias is rolling like a pimp

  • Jeff C

the android dilemma rears its ugly head again. i want the new nexus 7 but also want to wait for the new nexus 10. What do i DO!!

    • Hmm
    • Justin W

      Get both!

    • mustbepbs

Well, considering the new Nexus 7 is actually confirmed and available in a few days and the new Nexus 10 hasn’t had ANY information leaked what-so-ever, I’d go with the real product instead of the fake one.

      • Justin W

We know the N10 will be a fall release, he’s just wondering if he should wait or not. My suggestion: Buy the N7 and get the N10. Two different use cases, so why not?

        • Jeff C

mind if i ask what the different use cases are? thought they were both just tablets, one big one small

          • Justin W

I used my Nexus 7 on the go all the time (e.g. in the car, at friends’ houses, etc.). My Nexus 10 is my “home” device – I use that over almost everything at my house. Look at an iPad and iPad Mini – those that have both use the Mini as a portable device, while the iPad stays at home.

          • Jeff C

damn you. now im gonna end up buying both a 7 inch and 10 inch tablet! guess my macbook’s only use come november will be for porn.

          • Justin W

Lol. If you were really ambitious, I’m sure you could get that on your tablet too.

        • mustbepbs

And how do you know that?

          • Justin W

            GNex – Fall 2011, Nexus 4 Fall 2012, Nex 7, Summer 2012, Summer 2013. Nexus 10 – Fall 2012 – There’s a pattern here, whether you see it or not.

          • mustbepbs

You’re not taking into consideration that the Nexus 10 may not have sold what they wanted it to sell, and that a refresh would make no financial sense. The Nexus 7 clearly made them money and that’s why we’re getting a new one.

          • Justin W

The devices themselves don’t make them much money – it’s the potential sales that come from those devices that make them money. Also, these are simply devices designed to showcase Android, not something Google is betting the farm on.

Also, the Nexus One may not have sold what Google wanted or was expecting it to, but they continued with that line, didn’t they?

          • mustbepbs

It’s a little different with a phone versus two tablets. Clearly Google is hedging their bets on the one that sold more.

          • Justin W

Yeah, the Nexus 7 probably sold more because it was the first *well done* Android tablet and got, IMO, more publicity, but the Nexus 10 has it’s merits also, and likely sold it’s fair share.

          • Justin W

Where do I get my plate?

  • TheWenger

    It’s lunchtime dudes.

  • cgalyon

Wish we’d hear something about their smart watch plans. That’s probably just foolish optimism though.

  • Futbolrunner

Work production will go downhill after 12 for me

    • sc0rch3d

you assumed there was production before 12….tsk tsk

  • Kevin B

How long is this supposed to be? I may have to move some stuff around

  • Bionic

4.3 Is supposed to improve battery life

    • Thomas

Lol. And how many times have we heard this ;)

    • Thorboy

      4.3 will improve life.

      • Mr E

        i think he forgot a comma….

“4.3 Is supposed to improve battery, life”

    • hkklife

Any word if 4.3 addresses the horrible I/O lag on the first-gen N7?

      • MK17

Doubt it. i think that is a an Asus issue like it was on my tf201

    • jose

You didn’t say per Sarge. Must all be lies, rumors and speculation.

    • TheWenger

      My G-Nex hopes so.

  • Giovanni Palazzo

Anybody noticed there are 4 bikes separated from 3 bikes? :D

    • Mitch Joa

      Half-Life 3 and Half-Life 4 confirmed.

      • Franklin Ramsey

I think he meant jellybean 4.3 but this made me lol. Take my up vote, good sir.

        • Marcus Schoen

Its kinda funny. This happened 2 years ago. Motorola realeases a Razr, and the next day (or later that day), a new Android OS comes out.

      • Andrew Bockus

        I thought it was Half-Life 3 and Fallout 4?

        Hmmm…

    • Andrew Lind

Theres actually 8 bikes. you can only see the 5th bike on the left by the handlebars(count them)… I still like the idea though :D

      • Jackson

Maybe hints of 5.3 android 2 years from now when we have slight battery life issues? hmm.. lol

    • Justin Frieberg

if you count the handlebars there are 8 total bikes.

      • Mr E

        Android 5.3 confirmed!

    • middlehead

      THERE ARE FOUR BIKES.

    • TylerChappell

      All I noticed is that you can’t count. There’s 5 bikes + 3, not 4.

  • Shane Redman

please be more surprises, please be more surprises, please be more surprises (Chromekey, NexusQ-like system) My wallet is ready!

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

11 CT… fun times in the camp!

Perfect! Right when I leave for the airport. :(

  • Verizon

Perfect! Right when I leave for the airport. :(

    • Franklin Ramsey

Guess even you don’t get service on those…

      • Verizon

They won’t allow a tower as a carry on.

        • Franklin Ramsey

I’m surprised you don’t have a high powered Femtocell for this exact purpose.

  • Lucky Armpit

I guess that means no refresh on the Nexus 10? I need a new tablet and really want the Nexus 10 but I hate to buy last year’s model.

    • EC8CH

maybe not today, but you’d have to think before Christmas we’ll see an updated N10.

I’m planning on keeping my 1st gen N7, and picking up a new N10 if it is updated this year.

This makes me sad. My Xoom is nearly unusable.

    • jak_341

This makes me sad. My Xoom is nearly unusable.

      • Robert Macri

Mine is still running strong. I believe 4.2 is the killer to old hardware, I’ve left my xoom on 4.1.

Thinking about putting my Galaxy Nexus back to 4.1 as well, but hoping 4.3 helps it out some.

        • Steve Benson

Shiny ROM will fix your Gnex.

          • Robert Macri

I’m Running CM because everyone said they had dramatic improvements with that… before CM I was running Mummzy and tried AOKP. All three are laggy. TinyKernel made it worse and now I’m running ASKP kernel and it works a little better but not as good as when I was on 4.1

Changing the background process limit to 4 helps dramatically, but I have to remember to change that with every reboot.

          • CasperTFG

ROM virgin here…waiting for the next ROM Friday post. Not sure what to go with for my Galaxy Nexus.

            kaboom
            BAMF
            CM Nightlies
            sparksco
            MMuzzy
            AOSP/DHe17
            CM
            Euroskank
            DHO
            Keyblade
            Thunderstick
            jdkoreclipse
            Sourcery

I’m sure there are more, just grabbed them from RM.

          • Robert Macri

CM would be a good way to pop your cherry… Its the most bug free with the largest community of users.

Once you do one, you’ll become a ROM whore and try them all.

          • AnotherAndroidKid

            Shiny

          • SchwannyT

MMuzzy is just like stock with a few changes and adds. If you want to spend 3 days reading through all the options available in CM (not a bad thing) then do that.

          • CasperTFG

Thanks ST, AAK and RM. I think my preferences are: battery life, closest to stock, minimalist, and new icons.

Maybe the approach should be; a) CM (reassurance) would spoon me after my hymen broke, b) MMuzzy (familiarity) would be that virgin girlfriend asking me if it hurt, c) Shiny (battery performance) would convince me the second time isn’t awkward.

Haven’t flashed yet and already feel like a ROM whore.

      • Steve Benson

Just hold out a bit longer. N10 2 will come in October with the fall Google event.

        • steveliv

once the N10 2 comes out (with LTE support) my xoom will be retired and i will swap sim cards (or get a new smaller sim card at vzw)

      • kixofmyg0t

        Have you tried EOS?

    • zurginator

They’ll refresh it in November like last year. The N7 was this time last year(earlier, actually), so it’s no surprise we get the refresh at this time.

      • Lucky Armpit

Thanks for the replies, guys. I’ve got a TF101 that definitely needs an upgrade. Strangely enough it plays Beach Buggy Blitz with no problem but web browsing is a chore. :) Will look for the N10 near the end of the year – thanks again all!

    • zurginator

    • CasperTFG

      I have last year’s model. It’s delicious.

What ever happened to that media streaming device (H840) that passed through the FCC back in May… shouldn’t the manual have been released by now

    http://www.droid-life.com/2013/05/18/new-media-streaming-device-made-by-google-hits-fcc-please-be-a-new-nexus-q/

I wonder if we’ll hear anything about that today, and if not when. I’m kind of holding off on buying a Roku until I hear what Google TV has in store in the near future.

    • sk102704

      Maybe its the rumored Chromecast/Chromekey?
I also hope to hear something about this today.

    • sk102704

      Maybe its the rumored Chromecast/Chromekey?
I also hope to hear something about this today.

    • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Honestly man at this point just buy the Roku. They don’t even have Goog TV on the docket today as far as I know. Can’t go wrong with a Roku

      • EC8CH

I just bought a non-smart TV with an MHL port, so I’m stalking the Roku streaming stick on Amazon waiting for it to go on sale again.

I just really wish Google would sell a product to tie my TV into all my other android devices and services, but you’re right, I’ll probably just end up with the Roku.

        • Robert Macri

I had the old Google TV, it was horrible. I don’t use it anymore, as its in my closet collecting dust.

I would really love for a good google tv device.

          • jab416171

I have the Vizio Co-Star, and I love it. You can play youtube videos on it from your phone (just like what the Nexus Q did), and of course it’s got netflix and hulu and all the other google TV apps.

          • hkklife

For what its worth, Sony’s latest Google TV box is on clearance at SOME Target stores for $100, down from the usual $200. I came close to buying one 2 weeks ago but hesitated and when I went back they were all gone.

          • EC8CH

that thing gets horrible reviews. I’d like to see a nexus google tv device so that I know it will get some level of future support.

          • steveliv

this. we wanted to upgrade our revue, and the $100 clearance price was great. i got one last weekend. the only difference between it (NS7) and the new one (NS8) is the remote that is included (it has a microphone). the actual google tv device is the same.

        • Boblank84

Have you checked out any android tv sticks? I use mk808 on my tv’s and they work great. They do take some tweaking (custom Rom and hard wired network connection ) for them to do what I need. I use them mainly for hulu Netflix and to stream network video and they do that perfectly.

          • EC8CH

I’ve looked at them, but I need wifi support and I don’t want to tinker with my tv device as much as I do with my phone… I’m looking for a solution from google that just works.

      • Al-Burrit0

I had the roku, it was ok. Planning of buying Gbox Midnight MX2. Comes with Android 4.2! Seems like a good internet tv box. $100 at amazon.

  • EC8CH
