Google Announces Chromecast Dongle, Easiest Way to Bring Online Entertainment to Your TV

chromecast1

The Chrome team announced Chromecast this morning at Google’s SF press event, a dongle that is plugged into your home’s TV HDMI port, allowing for streaming online content right to your television. It is made with YouTube and other video providers in mind, turning any compatible TV into a streaming monster.

The service is cross platform, meaning even iOS users can take advantage of Chromecast. All control of videos is done with your device, so there is no need to learn any new user interface or things of that nature. In the top of apps, like Netflix and YouTube, a new icon can be found when you want to push a video to your TV. It’s a simple way of watching your favorite content right on the big screen. It also works with your music, so think of this dongle as a very simplified Nexus Q. An added bonus is that it doesn’t only work with Play Music, but other apps like Pandora.

Control from your desktop is also allowed. While watching a YouTube video on your computer,s imply hit a button and it is instantly pushed to your TV.

The device is only $35 and is available for purchase right now on Google Play.

    1. How do you configure a secure network?
    2. How does this thing get power? In the pictures it shows just the dongle attached to the TV.. but it also includes a USB power adapter? Does the dongle have a battery.. or are the pictures misleading and you actually have to have the dongle connected to power always?

    • Jackson

Power is through the tv he mentioned that

      • Devin

If that is the case why:

        What’s in the box
        Chromecast
        HDMI extender
        USB power cable
        Power adapter

        • Ironclad1313

The power adapter is probably for those who do not have usb ports on their tvs. The video said that it could be powered by usb.

      • Robert Macri

        Via the TV’s USB.

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

Somewhere it says powered by usb.
Ed: or according to jackson i guess not.

    • BeLogical

I have all the same questions, especially power!

    • duke69111
  • litobirdy

How the hec do you ACTUALLY set it up though? you go home plug it in, no menu? what? how? where? No need to enter Wep/WPA key for secured wifi? confusedd poof

    • PSU_DI

I have a product that is actually similar to this, its a smart wifi baby monitor, the way setup works is that you use your phone (android or ios) to connect to the device via Bluetooth. Then app on the phone allows you to configure the wifi connection, you can enter security keys or scan for networks etc. Once you establish the wifi connection, the app uses wifi to communicate going forward. I’d suspect it works extremely similar.

Another option could be that it just uses a WPS button. Press it on the router and then on the device and your done.

      • sirmeili

“Another option could be that it just uses a WPS button. Press it on the router and then on the device and your done.”

That would be foolish since not all wireless routers offer that option. I would assume they would want to reach as many people as possible and not leave anyone due to their choice of router (for instance, my mom still uses my original WRT54g (not the gl), which does not have that button on there and she has no reason to upgrade her router as it does everything she needs)

        • PSU_DI

With that same logic, not everyone owns an HDTV so it’s foolish to come out with this device….

I was only trying to throw out two examples of have this can be connected to a secure WIFI network, one involves an app, and another option is WPS.
I don’t know for sure which way Google is going to make this work but WPS is the more elegant/easier method, even if that means you need a newer router.

          • sirmeili

Well, I won’t be buying a new router to replace my business class one (that allows me to set up multple VLans) just so I can use this device, and I sincerely doubt they would require that.

As to not using HDMI, there is no other connection that would allow the content protection needed for Netflix, HULU, etc, so that was their only choice (HDCP). There is no way that any content provider would allow their app to work on it if it was component or composite.

The only other thing I can think of is that I’m not sure all routers actually come with WPS today (all consumer ones might, I’m not sure). If so, then I can see them doing that, but they would be alienating people like me who don’t have those routers and are more likely to be the early adopters.

The best option is the other one you suggestion (though WPS could still be an “option” for easier hookup). I wasn’t disputing your other option, just saying google would be silly to limit it to the WPS button is all :)

    • steveliv

there is an app on the play store that you need to install that will do that.

  • HowEasy

My main use for this would be when Im at school. And something makes me question if this would even work over a campus network with all the security nonsense they throw on it.
    Anyone got any ideas?

  • Robert Macri

HD Sound quality? I hope so.

  • DJ SPY

Does it work with amazon instant video?

    • Justin W

Using a laptop with the tab being beamed to Chromecast, yes. That’s the Vimeo demo we saw in the presser.

  • DanWazz

    Gonna order one tomorrow.

  • Jackson

Anyone know if you could project movies saved on laptop hard drive to it?

    • Jackson

      Anyone?

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

it doesn’t mirrior, it only shows what’s on chrome. But with the CC sdk, all will be possible. Soon.

    • TJWaterskier

Just drag and drop your video files into a chrome tab and they will play! So YES!

the web address just shows for example:
      file:///C:/Users/M15x/Desktop/my-totally-legally-downloaded-movie.mp4

      • Jackson

I had no idea you could do that lol

  • LiterofCola

Is this kinda what Microsoft does with the Xbox and Xbox Live?

  • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

    Bought. Done. send it please.

  • razorwit

I’m left wondering if you have a Google TV device already whether this capability will eventually be available without needing the dongle.

  • imns

For $35 it is pretty damn good but for me, it needs to support more than netflix, youtube, pandora and google play.

    • ReturnOfTheMack

Just open any other content source you want on a laptop or pc in Chrome and “cast” it from there.

  • aj522

I am wanting to know if this will be able to stream xvids. With the 3 months of Netflix how is this not worth it?

  • litobirdy

Guys calm down with the orders, They said it will be aviable at bestbuy and amazon and one more store i forgot on July 28th. so i’m going with that instead. Less shipping too

  • tutaina

    Amazon link anyone

  • nexus

    Just ordered mine!!!!

    • Droid Ronin

Just got one from the Play store!

  • Steve Swall

I’m sorry. I don’t really see how this is different then taking an HDMI cable and plugging it into my tablet, chromebook, smartphone, etc. Maybe I am missing something here?

    • DiegoKokomo

It’s wireless, works with multiple devices, and allows you to still do whatever from your tablet, chromebook, smartphone, etc without an HDMI cable draped across your living room.

    • ReturnOfTheMack

Yes you are. You can use any mobile device on the same wifi network to control content. Your device can be used for other things while content is playing and there are no cables to deal with.

      • Kamesen

I’m watching the video presentation now, but maybe someone else can
answer this: If there is no WIFI router there is no way to use this? In
other words, I cant tether the Chromekey to my phone? Hoping DL can look
        into this.

        @Kellex, Tato

        • ToddAwesome

I think you just created a paradox.

        • ddh819

i was actually wondering about this – could you take this to a hotel, connect it to the internet via your phone hotspot, and still control it with the phone?

      • Steve Swall

Thanks for your clarification on this.

    • Jackson

      Its wireless?

    • ToddAwesome

      It’s different.

    • Matthew DiGiacomo

Yes. Because if you did that you would have to stay on that page/app. With this you are free to hit play on the content and then go do whatever else you want on your device.

      • joejoe5709

Whoa, really? I didn’t catch that. That’s badass.

  • Fresh360

PURCHASED!!!!!! When he said $35 my mind exploded…I literally said “Oh SH*T” sitting at my desk, my coworker was like “Are you ok?” hahahahahahaha

    • thescreensavers

I scared my coworker as well

    • sirmeili

My thought was “If they get it down to $50, I’ll definitely buy one after it’s out for a bit”…. He said $35 and I immediately bought one.

      • Fresh360

This is impusle buy territory for sure; $35 wont get my Kids and I into a movie, won’t fill up my gas tank, or buy my vitamins from GNC. That price really made this purchase a no brainer.

  • Vikinglifeguard

Google TV will be sold for as much as I can get for it. Ugh. Glad I got it cheap. Already purchased this! So much easier looking than GTV ever was

    • EC8CH

Only advantage i can see that a full on google tv product would have is you don’t a need separate device to have an OS to control it, but who doesn’t have at least one device they could use. Otherwise it seems that if properly supported, chomecast could do everything more simply and cheaply.

      • Vikinglifeguard

Or in some cases 4-5 devices (2 phones, chromebook, laptops). Google TV (at least Logitech’s) was horribly slow and a bad experience. This should make life easier and free up some space under the tv

        • EC8CH

Really is a bold and innovative play on cracking into the livingroom from the technology standpoint. They still need to crack the content problem though.

  • SHMeyer

Wonder if I will be able to stream movies from Comcast app to it….

  • EC8CH

Wonder how the audio streaming quality compares to bluetooth?

Could be a very cheap way around bluetooth limitations, plus you get all the video streaming as well for only $35. Nice

    • Robert Macri

Same question I have… sound should definitely be better then my current hookup via headphone jack, but I wonder how much better.

      • EC8CH

It must receive the 320 kbps mp3 stream straight from the cloud. I guess the DAC of whatever device it’s plugged into would then determine the rest of the audio quality.

  • Andrew

google play order status says mine is shipping by july 27th! good thing i wasted no time

  • Jackson

Ships by august 7 now lolol

  • tyguy829

wait you can’t put it in your cart anymore? just says coming soon :(

  • NexusPhan69

Shipping times have already slipped to August 2nd. Buy it quickly people.

  • Travillion

And I’m guessing no Hulu? That is the only sore spot with my Google TV (in terms of content providers…..). Why oh why will Hulu and Google never work together in the TV domain?

    • Fresh360

Theoretically if you cast from the Chrome and not the Hulu App, you would be golden, right?

      • Travillion

And this is where I hide my head in shame for missing the obvious. Still viewing this device as a mini content-provider, not something that picks up a broadcast from another device.

        • sindeslroyer

Also due to the SDK for it being available Hulu could implement it in their apps if they decide to, Google just worked with Netflix to launch it immediately. :)

      • EC8CH

I don’t know if that works on chrome in android or just windows and mac, plus i think i streams the entire time from your device instead of going directly to the chromecast like it would if it were properly supported.

  • S2556

I will buy this when available in Canada :(
    alongside my new N7

  • litobirdy

But can you do the chrome tab casting from your phone? or is it only from laptops?

    • andrew

      IOS android and chrome.

      • litobirdy

I know but they were showing chrome example from laptop and they said chrome OS chrome pixel, but what bout chrome app on your mobile device?

        • Andrew

oh i’m sorry i misread your comment. maybe if not right away they will soon. they did say the chromecast sdk was in beta

        • thescreensavers

If they did not mention it, it does not exist. So thus its only from Chrome Pixle and Chrome Browser installed on a PC, did they mention OSX? dont think so

  • Thomas O’Brien

    Boom. Ordered!

  • Matthew DiGiacomo

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnd it’s now saying shipping by August 2nd. Got mine in when it said 1-2 days…who thinks it’ll actually happen? :P

    • ReturnOfTheMack

That’s weird. My order status says it will ship on July 27th.

      • NexusPhan69

        Same.

      • Matthew DiGiacomo

Same here. I was saying on the device page it’s saying it’ll ship by August 7th now for new buyers haha I think we’re good

        • ReturnOfTheMack

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. I literally ordered this thing as soon as Kover posted the link in the live blog. Haha they were still announcing pricing on the video and my order was done.

  • Matt Upton
  • Andrew

bought is as soon as f5 finally loaded the page

  • DiegoKokomo

Anyone have the Amazon link yet?

  • jhjr24

Will buying from Amazon still get the three free months of netflix?

  • TheRobotCow

So we can watch por….. er i mean The Droid Life show on my tv now!

  • EC8CH

    Needs Amazon Video support

    • KnowYourEnemy462

It looks like you can just cast it through the Chrome browser for now. I’m sure the app will support it soon though.

      • EC8CH

Did they say the chrome browser support worked through chrome on android or just windows and mac? Plus it sounds like that way it streams from the device instead of directly to the chromecast so it would be less than ideal.

        • thescreensavers

I think its safe to assume that The Chrome Tab Stream is from the Desktop Only now. And yea it streams from the device its mirroring the tab on. From a laptop you aren’t as mobile as you are with your phone/tablet.

          • EC8CH

so basically a rather poor work around as it then is basically wireless hdmi. More broad support for other online video services would GREATLY increase this device’s value.

    • New_Guy

Even if it doesn’t, the mobile version of Firefox will play Amazon Prime content. You simply need to find the Adobe Flash Player APK online for Android and download it. It’s pretty easy to find. I watch AP videos on my Note 2 all the time. Just watched Event Horizon not long ago.

  • muscal

I just want to know if HBO GO will work. Please Please Please let it work!

    • onDroid

You should be able to use HBO GO in your browser and chromecast it to the TV at the least. I would imagine HBO would update there app at some point but it may not be available right away.

      • Ambugger

Do you have to flash Adobe Flash Player?

      • teevirus

That is just it. HBO Go seems to require either a specific app or Adobe Flash through the browser. Some other dongle style Android devices have access to the Google play store which should allow one to download the HBO Go app. If this device can play HBO go it will be my next purchase from the Google play store.

        • sean carey

yeah i can get netflix already due to blu-ray player, want HBO Go though big time

        • michael arazan

I’d like to know if I can play my games on it from my phone, it saya it connects to google play for what i assume is access for tv and movies, but it connects to your phone tablet or pc. I can’t mirror my Gnex with a broken hmi to hdmi converter anymore and want to play games on my tv.

Need an article that compare an Android stick and chromecast to see which is better and has more options.

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

My nexus 4 is running a leaked 4.3 build but the hbo go app isn’t supported. Does it work on 4.2.2?

      • Skrewee Lewee

        Yeah. Works great on 4.2.2

      • cjmsd

I believe HBO go would have to update their app to enable the feature. It is app specific, not device specific.

    • mike dunham

I might be missing something but what is it that you want to watch on HBO GO, assuming you are a subscriber to HBO, that you cannot watch via your cable provider using on demand?

      • Ahku Droid

More is available via the app, such as every season of every show, where it has limited offerings through traditional OnDemand.

    • rutgersjaffo

Uh…if you have HBO Go, you clearly have HBO. Why would you need to stream HBO to your TV if you…already have HBO on your TV? I mean, I guess if you want to carry your GoogleDongle everywhere you go in case someone else doesn’t have HBO it makes sense. But…really?

      • Duh…

Because we don’t want to pay for a damn DirecTV receiver for every TV in the house or at a hotel while on vacation.

  • Matt Upton
  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Do not buy from GOOGLE! Coming to Amazon today! Get that free shipping!

    • Justin W

Not available on Amazon yet, at least, not that I’ve been able to find :(

Edit: If you’ve got a link, I’ll take it – I’ve got Prime, so I’ll gladly buy it from Amazon over the Play Store!

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

I’ve been hunting… No luck yet

        • Justin W

Mash your F5 key. I’ll be doing the same :)

          • thescreensavers

Setup a google alert and waitng. They said It will be Avalible today on Amazon with prime and no tax, no reason to buy it from play store.

          • Justin W

Bought it from the Play store before I knew it was going to be available on Amazon, so cancelled it, but I completely agree with you.

          • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

            It’s live!

    • Jérôme Besnard

Yes, but from Google, you get 3 free months of Netflix.

      • EC8CH

so buy one from google and the rest from amazon :-)

      • Justin W

You also get that from other retailers. It’s not an exclusive to the Play store deal – that’s available from at least Amazon, Best Buy as well.

    • Dan

Ordered via Amazon Prime! Estimated delivery 7/26!

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Just came here to same the same it’s Live!

      • Justin W

        Same. Can’t wait :)

  • Seth Merritt

    Anyone find the amazon link?

    • Justin W

Thinking it’s not available on Amazon yet :(

  • fillyo75

Can this plug into a receiver HDMI port to output to TV? I want sound over my sterio.

    • thebigmann

This is my question as well. I’d rather not have to output from my TV to get to my speaker system.

      • itsacardigan

I really don’t see why it wouldn’t…your receiver is just a pass through.

        • Heather Mines

I’m wondering how it controls devices (power, volume, etc) is it through HDMI or is it using an IR blaster somewhere? Depending how it doe sit could add a lot of complexity to get it to work properly.

          • Justin W

It’s controlled through HDMI. I believe it would at most turn on the receiver, which might then turn on the TV if the receiver/TV is capable of that. I think the volume control is based off of the output volume of the Chromecast device, not the TV, but I’m not sure.

          • Heather Mines

That’s too bad. I had to turn HDMI control off on all my devices because my HDMI Matrix switch would pass those commands on to all TVs. For example turning off the game room TV turned off the living room TV.

        • thebigmann

I’m thinking more about the features where it will turn on your TV and automatically select the proper input … will it turn on my receiver and TV? One or the other? Will it select the proper input on my receiver? I don’t know enough about HDMI to know how it will behave.

    • Justin W

Should be able to – the receiver works as just a pass-through so there shouldn’t be any issues. HDMI works the same way, so this should work.

  • joejoe5709

Okay that’s pretty freaking cool. My wife will be happy that it’ll also work with her IPhone. Great job, Google! Let’s hope it’s less than $50.

    • cmonnats23

it can be purchased for 35 bucks right now from the play store!

      • Tyler Durden

        $42*

        • Justin W

Or $35 on Amazon when the link is up.

    • Patrick Chapman

      It’s $35.

      • joejoe5709

Oh oops. Good call. Didn’t read the last sentence. Thanks. Well there ya go. Sign me up.

  • Capt. Crunch

$35+$7 for shipping and tax= $42 not bad I’ll have to pick one up soon

  • Tony Byatt

    I. WANT. THIS…

  • Riz Virani

Where can you buy this :(

  • SmokeNMirrors

I wonder if this will work with Miracast on the new Droids?

    • Justin W

Don’t need Miracast for it to work – it works over WiFi, and I don’t think it even uses Miracast to transmit the data.

      • SmokeNMirrors

That’s the inverse of my question. I want to know if it can be used with Miracast not if it’s needed. If I buy a new Droid Maxx (I won’t but play along) can I use this to mirror my TV with it.

        • steveliv

No it doesn’t sound like it is compatible with miracast. However, You wouldn’t need to use miracast even if it did support it, because your phone would support the “Cast” features of the apps natively.

          • SmokeNMirrors

That only applies to the hand full of apps with support. No games, no presentation software, no screen mirroring, etc etc etc. . It’s only marginally useful. So what dongle actually does work with Miracast?

          • steveliv

The SDK is open, so i see this functionality showing up in a lot of apps. As for dongles, Best Buy makes one under it’s RocketFish brand that retails for about $80. Model is RF-WFD301.

          • SmokeNMirrors

Yeah hopefully Miracast will use the SDK and add support. Thanks for finding that RocketFish device. It’s good to know there’s *something* out there that can be used with the new Droids but after reading the crappy reviews I really wish they had just included HDMI!

        • Justin W

Doubt it. No info available shows the ChromeCast device works with Miracast mirroring.

  • Jeremy Alajajian

Small print – Power cord required (Not shown)

    • brkshr

It says USB power. It would be nice if it can be powered by the usb port on the TV.

      • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

        It is

        • Justin W

          * can be. Most TV’s now have a USB port, though, so it shouldn’t be an issue.

    • ToddAwesome

I had a concern about that, then I remembered I have a few old usb wall plugs from old phones, bingo bango, USB powered!

    • flyinggerbil

      What’s in the box
      Chromecast
      HDMI extender
      USB power cable
      Power adapter

    • sirmeili

yes, but a lot of tvs have USB ports which can provide the power. If not, it says it includes the USB cable and a power cord for those instance when it doesn’t. I find it interesting they didn’t have the option to use MHL, which has the option to power devices like this (some TVs come with MHL supported HDMI ports I believe).

  • Mr E

Nice! Already in my cart for a cool $35 ;)

    • sc0rch3d
