New Nexus 7 Pre-orders Already Live Through Best Buy, Full Gallery Too

n7-6

Well, there she is in all her glory. The new Nexus 7 is now live through BestBuy.com for pre-order, meaning we are almost 100% guaranteed to see it unveiled at tomorrow’s breakfast meeting with Sundar Pichai. The 2nd generation tablet from Google has already been leaked, what feels like a dozen or so times through testers and retailers over the last few days, but this one sort of puts the nail in the coffin.

According to Best Buy, we’re looking at $229 and $269 prices for the 16GB and 32GB variants, respectively. On a specs front, we’ve got a 7-inch HD (1920×1200) display, 2GB RAM, 5MP rear camera, 1.2MP front camera, 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor (same as Nexus 4), Adreno 320 GPU, and Android 4.3. But you already knew all of that, didn’t you? Yes, within the last week this and the Moto X became two of the worst kept tech secrets in recent memory.

And because it’s available, here is an entire gallery of the new N7.

honestly…i think its time to unlock, root, and rom my n7…i think itll be a better financial investment then wasting time n money trying to sell it and buy this…i still not overly impressed with this enough to justify all that(although i was really hoping i would be) i have an itch to get it but i honestly like the look of the ogn7 better and am not a fan of the larger lower bezel…and as i said before not sure why so much criticism for the og n7 i had it since the get and its been fine so fine in fact ive yet to unlock and im a serious flashaholic…yeah it hangs every now n then for a sec but show me a device that doesnt?

It would be interesting to see the new nexus 7 vs the galaxy note 8. On a good sale the note 8 is $300. Not sure the new nexus 7 screen is worth all the upgrades the note 8 has. The ir, micro sd slot, spen, etc are really nice features.

Compared to the Note 8, the Nexus 7 v2 has a model with more internal storage, better screen resolution, onscreen buttons (if that is important for you), faster SoC and stock Android with fast/guaranteed updates. And even for 32GB it’s a good bit cheaper.

The Note 8 counters with a larger screen (even more usable space once you take into account the space gained by not having onscreen buttons), an IR blaster, expandable storage and all of the usual Touchwiz gimmicks.

I think the new Tab 3 8.0 is honestly a better device to compare with the new N7. Personally I would take a N7 BUT I would really love to see an 8″ or 9″ Nexus tab, as I feel 7″ is just too small for 1080P + virtual buttons. 8″ is THE perfect tablet formfactor and size IMHO.

Wow, i just watched the video from that guy that already got his, and even changing a wall paper induced lag. The state of android tablets is really sad.

I love the specs Best Buy decided to show off. They state that the display is “10 finger capacitive touch” but fail to state the resolution. They seem to think that being able to use all 10 of my fingers is more important than a 1920×1200 display.

:/ I’m sure it’s an awesome device and I’ll likely get flamed for this….but does there not seem to be a ton of wasted realestate on that thing? Maybe it’s just me, but that looks like an 1.5″ + on top and bottom. Looks old school

    • DashShrion

Bezels, it’s how you hold a tablet without resting your thumbs on the screen.

      • Noel

Men but they are HUGE…they didn’t have to be that big. They can fit an 8 or 9″ screen on that thing and still have plenty bezel to hold the device. Maybe Google wants us to be used to that size/form factor and then next time put an 8.5” screen on it. I was really expecting a device with slimmed down bezels.

        • geedee82

Trust me, its not as bad as it looks. The original N7’s bezels were less than an inch on the top and bottom, and before it came out everyone was freaking out over the pictures (including me) just like we are doing all over again now. I’m sure the bezel size is no different on this new one than it was on the original. And it is definitely impossible to fit an 8 or 9 inch screen and still have plenty of room to hold it, the entire tablet is only like 8.5 inches diagonally.

          • Noel

Yup i realize that…was exaggerating a bit just to emphasize just how pronounced i thought the bezels were. I hate huge bezels mostly on phones. Hope the N5 is more compact plzzzz.

        • turdbogls

they slimmed down the side (long side) bezels. I attribute the larger top (short side) bezels to the camera, speakers, and notification LED….all of which I am happy to trade a quarter of an inch for.

    • DashShrion

Bezels, it’s how you hold a tablet without resting your thumbs on the screen.

    • j

Bezels shrank from the original N7. You hold it there.

    • geedee82

The original N7 had less than an inch on the top and bottom, once you get it in your hands you realize it’s not bad at all. I’m sure the newer one is no different or maybe even smaller.

  • http://thebeeobee.com/ thebeeobee

Not sure about the pricepoint. They really opened up the lane for those $120 HP’s, Nooks, Asus Memopads, etc. They should’ve went for $199 and stomped them out.

  • litobirdy

wow when you look at the sideways pic of it, the bezels are even more brutal. why are the bezels so freaking hugeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

    • speraider430

You don’t hold a tablet like you hold a phone. An edge to edge display would be horrible on a tablet device.

      • litobirdy

why are the bezels bigger than the 1st gen.. just terrible design on the bezels

        • j

They aren’t. The side bezels are smaller, and the top and bottom the same. Overall makes them look bigger, but in fact, they are smaller.

          • Noel

So the overall size of both devices is the same…i hope so.

      • Noel

LOL…personally i would’ve loved to see more slimmer bezels with about half the size of what the top and bottom look now

  • Peemee

Will it be a piece of junk like the first one? That was such a disappointment. Switched to Note 8.0 and could not be happier. I know it is a budget tablet, but it is also a Nexus. I would rather pay more for a Nexus running on decent hardware. Hopefully this one performs a bit better.

  • Justtyn Hutcheson

If its Wifi-only, why is there a SIM tray in the press renders?

    • Tojen1981

Some of the renders do show it without the Sim tray.

  • Eric Whitaker

Does anyone know if this is the same size and shape? Finally got my Treegloo case and I don’t want to have to go through that again.

  • trwb

    The bezel is disgusting

  • Chris

Is it gone from BestBuy.com for anyone else?

  • ddevito

New one still lags. UNFREAKIN BELIEVABLE

    • valapsp

      you tried it?

      • ddevito

Noticed lag on a posted video of the new one. I think it’s safe to say Android will lag always, until Google redesigns Android’s architecture. It’s not in Google’s best interest to fix lag. They don’t care.

Specs wise the new N7 is on par with the Nexus 4, which lags. The HTC One has better specs, and that lags too – even with stock 4.2.2.

        • Jarred Sutherland

Funny, my Nexus 4 never had a hiccup, just like my N7 never did. Always makes me wonder what people install on their devices to make them run terribly.

Also .. perhaps you can post this “video” so the rest of us can see it.

          • ddevito

The Nexus 7 has cheap storage in it, which explains its serious lag issue. Android was never lag-free.

You can deny it all you want, but the N7 lag has been proven over and over again.

          • Jarred Sutherland

Oh so what happened to the N4 lag, you aren’t addressing that with my comment? In my personal experience, I never had a single issue with the N7 and lag.

          • ddevito

The N4 lag isn’t caused by hardware (was my point). A coworker had the N4 and he bitches about lag all the time. Android is laggy, we all know it. Its still the best mobile OS, but due to its multitasking nature it lags.

The N7 lag is worse, and I’m afraid with the new one being so cheap it will suffer the same fate.

Bottom Line: you get what you pay for.

          • ToddAwesome

I can prove it every time I turn mine on. I have only used about half of the internal storage, with a handful of widgets running, and good god does she lag. LAG! Just unlocking and getting into my user can take 10 seconds. I seriously turn it on, swipe to unlock, and walk away.

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/nemesis099 Nemesis099

I have to say this is something that worries me as well. I have an iPad2 and it never seems to lag (although it does have wifi issues). I’ve debated on getting the N7 for myself as my wife is always on the iPad. Google needs to work on some of the lag when switching programs and especially when updates are being downloaded and installed. My Droid Razr is useless when an update is coming through which is terrible! Granted I would rather have the lag instead of no back button!

          • ddevito

I agree about the delay when apps are installing, also happens when a msg or a call is coming in. It drives me nucking futs

        • valapsp

          I agree.

        • valapsp

          I agree.

        • NorCalGuy

          U mad bro?

        • SparkysShocker

My wife’s iPhone 5 lags, havent messed with my brothers WP8, but I haven’t seen a phone that doesn’t lag at some point.

That’s quite a lot of them. And not alot of 32GB.

    • Josh C

Can almost guarantee it won’t have a CDMA radio. LTE is likely, however.

    • Ian

      Nice grand prix!

Here is the price of the protection plan for those interested. Prices for the 16g model are 10 bucks cheaper.

    • ToddAwesome

Holy moly, I’d rather just take my chances and then buy a new one if I absolutely had to.

  • Jonathan Reid

    Limit 2 pre-orders per tablet apparently…

  • 1llum1nat1

i had to send my N7 back to asus twice for software issues, it was a 2 week turn around time each time. regardless of the shipping costs, i will be ordering from the play store this time out. as mentioned earlier, you cant put a price on warranty replacement from google.

  • Jonathan Reid

First tip! WOOP!!! Props, Kellen for working so hard this week!

  • https://twitter.com/paladaxar Paladaxar

Sweet…the specs say it’s .3 inches thick, which is 7.62mm. The old one was 10.45mm, so it looks like they were able to slim it down quite a bit! I’m stoked :)

PS…even if they were rounding down, .35 inches is still only 8.89mm and .39 inches is 9.9mm. So no matter how you look at it, it’s at least a LITTLE bit thinner.

  • Eric

anyone catch bestbuy’s 0.3 in thickness in the specifications? is that foreal?

  • Geoffrey Gunter

Any ideas on the cellular version?

    • http://us.playstation.com/ps4 Mark Cerny

Yes. I think it will have 3G/4G capabilities. Just an idea.

      • AnotherAndroidKid

Any advise on provider for just this though?

      • Geoffrey Gunter

I meant as to when it would be released. I probably should have been more specific.

  • ThomasMoneyhon

I am going to chance it and not buy online and wait and buy in person in a physical store. I did that with the original n7 and that worked out so ill try it again.

    • Andrew Bockus

Pre Order, Try to buy one in store as well.

If you find one on launch, then you’re set, return the shipped one.
If not, then you’ve got one on the way! :D

I’m going through withdrawals ever since my N7 screen broke. I need this, I needs it nap!!!

Still wondering what 4.3 brings to the table. No noticeable changes from what I have heard. I’m just excited to see what they do under the hood.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Battery life improvements I think. The rest we won’t care much about.

      • JMonkeYJ

so basically undoing the battery life hit that 4.2 caused? or substantially better?

        • Jackson

Substantial better like 3-4 times theirs a video of it on the leaked 4.3 guy was getting 4-6 hours on his normal usage and got 4.3 and was getting 25hrs regularly

          Here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKrHNkqw-dM&feature=youtube_gdata_player

          • turdbogls

if he was getting 4-6 hours of battery life out of his N4, something was wrong with it. I hope, being a “tech” guy, he would know that, but maybe not. that just seems like a rediculous jump. I could see getting an extra 30-40 minutes of screen on time…but that is just crazy. hope i am wrong though. only time will tell.

          • turdbogls

True but look at the droid ultra 28hrs of mixed usage on 2140 mah so maybe there is something figured out because its larger screen and about the same battery and I don’t know about you but the nexus 4 could only last that long if you have tops 2 hrs of screen on time

          • turdbogls

I hope they figured out something. if 4.3 REALLY does this well on battery life, I wont have to take battery size into account on my next phone purchase.
I’ll be first in line for this Nexus 7 and be ready to flash a stock 4.3 build once it hits AOSP to my galaxy nexus.

          • Jackson

Good point if so it will help all the people with the gnex still I hated the battery life on that with a passion lol So I got a 3800 Mah extended battery lol gave me like 2 days of batter life

          • turdbogls

lol, thankfully i have learned to live with the crappy battery life, and carry around another battery when i need it. I think i am going to be happy with any phone I pick up these days when it comes to battery life.

          • Jackson

Yea that’s guaranteed Gnex just blew my mind at how bad the battery was but when they did that update last year to jelly bean with the radios it helped some but still I could barely take it lol

          • JMonkeYJ

dang! well i’m not gonna hope for that kind of improvement, but if i get it, i’ll certainly be happy

      • Marsg

Theirs also some performance optimizations, the benchmarks confirm it. Could possibly be because of the new kernel

  • Kane Desousa

    This > iPad Mini

    • Zydrunas Chillgauskas

If it had a 4:3 aspect ratio, yes, but the form factor is just a killer for me. It’s too bad, since I really prefer the N7s software, but I just find 4:3 to be infinitely better for web browsing, books, and email. Begrudgingly sticking with my Mini for now…

      • Jon Beaumont-Pike

I agree, the 4:3 aspect ratio is definitely a nicer screen for tablets

      • Butters619

The 4:3 aspect ratio is nice for 10″ tablets where you already have to hold it with two hands. For a 7″ tablet, 4:3 aspect ratio makes it super uncomfortable to hold one handed. Pick up a N7 and you can easily and comfortably hold it with one hand.

        • Eric

I personally couldn’t for a long time it’s too heavy.

  • Leonard Wong

Nice it has Android Market instead of Google Play

    • valapsp

      What am i missing?

      • valapsp

I got it. I was looking for an icon. You can spot it in the specs.

Hmmmm so tempted. But my first gen Nexus 7 is still holding up mighty good. Maybe till the Nexus 7 Three. But who knows how I’ll feel after I post this. *hides wallet from himself*

No Tegra 3 lag or hatred? Lots of people reporting bad experiences after about 9 months with the OG N7.

      • duoexo

No lag or hatred. Has kept up and done its job when traveling too. And OMG kellex replied to me. Can’t tell if replying to seduce me to buy new N7 or genuinely cool guy.

Thank you good. Sir. Please don’t post an awesome review of it. Cus that’s how you got me with my first N7.

          • Rob

My og nexus 7 runs like a champ, I think people just like to cry

          • Peter

I’ve had no problem with either of my OG N7s with lag. Hey, did anyone notice that SOME of the gallery photos show what appears to be a SIM slot on the side?

          • Josh C

Just noticed it. That should essentially confirm LTE compatibility or AT&T/T-Mobile HSPA+.

          • ddevito

My N7 LAGS. It’s almost unusable at this point. I’m not buying another one because of this.

          • trwb

Is it rooted? My runs like crap stock, but great with a custom kernel, custom ROM, and animations to 0.5. Also maybe your processor over heated and got damaged? Tegra is kind of junk.

          • Billy Buttons

Mine worked great overall but when I would go to the homescreen from inside the app drawer, the background would shift a bit before properly loading. I assumed it was something to do with the launcher I was using but idk.

      • ThomasMoneyhon

I hate to sound like an a** but with so many people complaining from the memory chips/fstrim issue I have to believe that people not experiencing the lag in the latest jellybean build simply are not using it right. Yes I said it and I may sound mean, but it seems to widespread for it to be simply a number of bad units. hopefully 4.3 runs fstrim on a regular basis so people no longer need to buy an app from the play store to do it for them. This solves the issue 100%

      • chris420o

I never understood why so much hate for the tegra 3 and such…ive had my n7 since the get and i am a flashaholic and ive yet to unlock n root n flash a rom because its been pretty find for me stock for what i use it for…reading, browsing internet around the house or using tablet talk to text, teathering and watching hbo and netflix during lunch…i carry it everywhere and it hangs only sometimes and slightly but show me a phone that doesnt?

Honestly, it lags every once in while (notice every couple months), but I just backup, wipe everything, and reinstall whatever ROM I have on it (obviously unlocked and rooted). Runs like new. It’s a fine device, and in my opinion, holds up well.

  • Rbq

That resolution is going to make me upgrade more than anything else. That bezel, though…

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

And at that price, it’s easily justifiable.

  • Nate595

    Definitely the most attractive tablet

I feel bad for anyone that ordered the original Nexus 7 today…

    • MentatYP

Unless that person knew what he was doing getting one for $100 less.

  • dingo

I wonder if the Play store will offer it with any promotions. The last one gave you Transformers for free.

Hah I completely forgot about that. Never watched it.

      • dingo

me neither…but it was still a freebie :P

Hope so, otherwise why would you order it through them? Especially since the Play store charges you crazy amounts for shipping.

          • GiantJay

There is no way I am ordering this through the Play Store if I can get it through Best Buy. Shipping was ridiculous and it was a nightmare ordering the first Nexus 7 from the Play Store. Thank God they got a retailer to handle there sales.

Like Max said, if they don’t give you freebies and gift cards through Google Play, I’d look at these other retailers.

Well last time the only shipping option was 2-day. Now with the ground option hopefully it is more reasonable.

google does many things well… selling devices directly doesn’t appear to one of them

Yeah they had that $25 credit too though right?

          • Thorboy

Yea, you did get a $25 play store credit through the play store. Although when the first N7 came out for the first month there was a shortage through the play store. I remember not really being informed as to when I would get mine.

Look on the bright side, at least you get the warranty straight from Google vs just the Asus one. When I had a display issue, they first sent me out the replacement and then I sent mine back. Asus would never do that.

          • Guest

i had to send my N7 back to asus twice for software issues, it was a 2 week turn around time each time. regardless of the shipping costs, i will be ordering from the play store this time out. as mentioned earlier, you cant put a price on warranty replacement from google.

Customer service. I ordered my fiancee’s 8 GB N7 through the Play Store and when it died they just sent a brand new replacement 16 GB one, free shipping. Couldn’t have been easier or better. My friend’s was bought at a store, and when his died, he had to pay to send it in to Asus and have them fix it, leaving him without it for a couple weeks.

I’m also scared of having to deal with Asus customer service again after owning a Transformer Prime

          • Sirx

Do they generally fix your issues though? I just sent my transformer infinity to them (for light bleeding)–at my expense, of course–and would like to know if they are good for actually fixing their products…

    • SOS

I think they’re gonna give the BBC doc Planet Earth. That’s what it looked like in the leaked video thing

      • BMG

Not to be stingy but…will build.prop edits get me this for free?

    • michael arazan

I finally got the N7 last november after being sold out since it launched and got one of three left at office depot here and luckily it was a 32 gb model.

I was expecting transformers and it was ice age, i was so pissed.

    • C-Law

I bought mine at Sam’s club the first week the n7 came out and noticed I had the transformers movie too, and the $25 play store credit. So it wasn’t just the play store giving it free with the n7
