Motorola DROID ULTRA Limited Edition Poses for the Camera

motorola droid ultra limited

Last week, we saw a semi-questionable press render of the DROID ULTRA with a red racing stripe down its back leak for the world to see. We weren’t exactly sure what to make of it, but a new photo of a “Limited Edition” DROID ULTRA has surfaced with a semi-similar stripe, leading us to believe that there may be another variant of the ULTRA for either employees or special occasions.

As you can see from the picture, the kevlar back is given a V-shape design, with a centered red stripe targeted down the middle at the point of the V. If Motorola was trying for a “racing stripe,” this certainly accomplishes that look.

In terms of “Limited Edition” DROID devices, this is nothing new. There were limited editions of the original DROID RAZR MAXX and then the DROID RAZR MAXX HD with special red designs, however, they were only made for Verizon employees. And since both of those were the MAXX variants of their particular RAZR families, I wouldn’t be surprised if this picture is really of the DROID MAXX, rather than the ULTRA.

By the way, tomorrow is the day that we find out all there is to know about the new DROID family from Motorola. Stay close by, as we’ll have coverage for most of the day.

    One word: ugly.

That describes all of Moto’s new phones, save for the X.

  • Philip A. Kaiser

Anyone else find it strange that there are three mic holes at the bottom but no speaker holes and no camera hole. Yes, the camera hole could be cut off from the pic but that would make this device about 10 inches long.

    • DJ SPY

I pointed that out on another forum. Someone said those three dots were the speaker.

  • trwb

Is that a red boondoggle bracelet stuck to the back of the device?

  • DJ SPY

It would be awesome if this phone has the voice capabilities of the Moto X. Instead of OK Google we would say Hello Moto.

  • http://twitter.com/jdrch jdrch

Whatever, I’m waiting for the ULTRA MAXXX Triple-XZ 4

  • Raven

Those red chevrons sort of look like sergeant stripes. I hope that this isn’t the “Droid Sarge” edition.

  • Detonation

Kevlar/Carbon Fiber back but was a glossed over finish? Meh, the matte texturized feel on the Razr line is much more appealing.

    • Fresh360

That is just the plastic new phones come in.

      • Detonation

I hope so, but the leaked renders of the phones also have a glossy reflection effect on their backs

        • Fresh360

That is without a doubt plastic on this pic. Though we joke that VZW puts their logo anywhere look where it says “Verizon Limited Edition” that is NOT on the actual phone.

  • Duser3

Any one know when the release will be taking place (time wise)? And will it be streamed or broadcasted in anyway?

  • Edwin M

Droid Ultra Razr Maxx Superior Gigantor HD 1200P XXXL

  • joejoe5709

That’ll give HTC a run for its money in the design department.

  • master94

the naming scheme on the Droid series is getting too long imo.

    • LiterofCola

What’s so long about “Droid Ultra Maxx”?

      • DJ SPY

Actually, supposedly it’s Droid M, Droid Ultra and Droid Maxx

        • kixofmyg0t

I don’t think it’ll end up with the Ultra tag for the standard one.

I’m thinking it’ll end up as just DROID.

  • Iron_Catastrofe

I’m pretty sure the Verizon and Limited Edition logo are just on the plastic covering. Take that off and bam, problem solved.

  • Steve Benson

    Droid Ultra Turd.

  • aDROIDfreeworld

MOTO DROID X HD RAZR MAXX LIMITITED EDITION ULTRA BLOAT!!!!

    DDDRRRROOIIIIIIDDDD

    • LiterofCola

      You’re an idiot

      • aDROIDfreeworld

go fu*k yourself bro – how many times do i have to say it?

  • BAM1789

So as other people have pointed out, the DROID, Red Moto Logo, Verizon and Limited Edition are all part of most likely just a back sticker covering the rear that most phones are wrapped in when in the box. It’ll come off.

    • Steve Benson

Really, really, really? No chance that shiz is coming off.

      • LiterofCola

        Jump off a bridge.

        • Steve Benson

          After you.

        • aDROIDfreeworld

go drink another liter of *** you troll

  • samosa king

    who want my samosa?

  • yep

Just so everyone knows, if you look down the right side of the phone you can see where the plastic covering ends. I repeat….JUST COVERING

    • Butters619

So when you pull that cover off you have an unbranded kevlar phone? Oh my.

    • Eric

That doesn’t change the ugly carbon fiber look with the red stripe.

    • Eric

That doesn’t change the ugly carbon fiber look with the red stripe.

    • Ian Smith

      doesn’t matter, still hideous

  • MichaelFranz

2 things. The back looks glossy compared to the razr hd’s matted finish. And second, now seeing a legit shot of it, it doesnt look half bad

  • Ej McCarty

Verizon Droid Ultra Maxx Limited Edition 4G LTE… i would hate saying this if people asked me which phone i have. “I have the Moto X phone” sounds much, much better

    • LiterofCola

Since when have any of the Droid phones been labled “4g LTE”?

      • Ej McCarty

Well i mean they didn’t get 4G until the droid 4. I guess I’ve still just got a bitter resentment for motorola after what they did to me with the droid 3. At this point I’m always hesistant with anything motorola brings. That’s probably why I’m going to wait until the next phone after the X just to see where they go and how they handle the X phone.

        • LiterofCola

What was wrong with the D3?

          • Ej McCarty

The fact that it had about a 3 month shelf life and they came right out with the droid 4. I mean it was a decent phone and I was really excited to get it, but when they come out with the next version a few months after they released this phone, it just sucks. Especially because I’m the type that likes to have the newest of everything.

          • Mark Mann

and they said “lets screw over ej mccarty” when they did that?(referring to your “what they did to me with… statement)

          • Ej McCarty

Well they definitely weren’t thinking about the consumer when they pulled that crap, and yes, me along with everyone else who bought one pretty much felt the same way.

          • Mark Mann

i never said they cared about the consumer(they obviously don’t, or didn’t) but saying “what htey did to me…” is akin to people saying “my __________” insert favorite sports team here

        • Anon

Incorrect; the Droid Bionic had 4G LTE.

      • Eric

        Droid Incredible 4G LTE

        • LiterofCola

          Yep, forgot about that one.

    • lgreg64

you could say you have the VD U MAXX 4G LTE

    • Mark Mann

or you could just say you have the droid ultra maxx

      • LiterofCola

Exactly, saying “Droid Ultra Maxx” doesn’t take more effort than saying “Galaxy S4.”

  • chris420o

this is pretty bad as…i might be more excited for these devices then the measly moto x with its measly battery and specs i wannan cry when i read those articles on the x

  • a) youth.in.asia

This is cute. Cause when you’re holding it, the stripe is pointing down towards your manhood. Let’s the ladies know what’s up …if you catch my drift

    • EC8CH

I weep for the youth in asia

  • Caleb Loop

Is this the first we are seeing of droid branding actually physically on the phone?

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Might be, can’t think of another phone that had the word “DROID” on the back.

      • Bionic_Pags

I’m pretty sure that is just a plastic protection that you peel off the phone, and not actually branded on the back of the phone

        • Justtyn Hutcheson

I’d be sincerely surprised if it weren’t screen printed on the kevlar. Its simple enough to do.

        • Paul Hansen

It actually looks like the same material as the verizon logo and limited edition text so it looks to be part of the phone not the plastic. I could be wrong though.

      • jh123416

Wow, never noticed that. Just grabbed my dormant OG Droid and it wasn’t there! haha, good eyes!

      • Iron_Catastrofe

I could have sworn the battery door on the Droid X2 was branded?

      • DJ SPY

It’s been on every render you guys have posted. You hadn’t noticed it?

    • Paul Hansen

I noticed this too. I was surprised to see it.

  • DJyoSNOW

Chuckling: there was such a hypy it would of seemed and now the disappointment?!?!

    • LiterofCola

      Like the Moto X?

      • DJyoSNOW

Yeah I guess more so but even still I thought the design was going to be the same all around. So to see these posts in disgust are kind of funny to me. (“That is all”)

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

While I am excited to see the new Droids…. I’m more interested in the HTC One announcement tomorrow. Think we’ll see a 64GB? I mean the storage exclusives that ATT gets are usually temporary.

  • BRIM

Hopefully the “DROID” is put to rest after these.

    Old and tired designs.

    • Ryan Powell

I’m with you but I’m pretty sure it won’t go away. The DROID branding is a money maker for Verizon and Motorola. I would bet the majority of smartphone users that are not all that technically inclined would say “iPhone” and “DROID” are the two phone options out there. I here people claim all the time that they have an “iPhone” or “DROID” to describe their phones when they have don’t have a true DROID branded phone. So It’s doubtful Motorola will throw that away despite it’s new ownership.

      • imns

Don’t forget the other factor in the Droid brand – Disney. Disney now owns Lucas. They may decide not to renew Verizon’s license to use the Droid name. Maybe they will if Verizon modifies the Droid logo to add mouse ears.

    • hkklife

I would rather have “old and tired” designs if it means REAL high-end specs such as 32Gb of storage, quad-core SoC, big screens, 3000mAh+ batteries, microHDMI ports, and microSD storage. Ever since the GS3 launch last year I have been impatiently awaiting a Moto release on VZW that is on par with Samsung’s current offerings all while bringing Moro’s usual sterling battery life, reception, near-stock Blur and build quality.

I am not a spec whore and I really feel the sweet spot has been reached in the past 6-9 months JUST not in a single handset and certainly not by Moto. By that, I simply mean that Motorola has not fielded a strong enough entry YET due to the Jha regime change and Google acquisition. I just want a single device on VZW with plenty of internal & external storage, a solid camera, 2Gb RAM, Maxx-size battery, decent SoC and a 5″ screen (1080p would be nice but I can live with 720p) The X isn’t gonna offer that so our best hope is that these’ “tired” old Droids will.

The DNA was the first phone where I felt the reasonable apex of CPU performance and screen size/PPI had been reached. But it was ruined by insufficient storage, battery, and Sense.

The GS4 (especially in 32Gb form or the Active) ticks all of the right boxes on paper but is ruined by Touchwiz, poor reception, and the usual suspect, slippery Samsung build (though it is better than the GS3).

The Options G Pro is a phenomenal phablet package but is again ruined by a pointless skin and AT&T exclusivity.

Gimped fixed storage, neutered SoC, smallish screen, and small batteries won’t cut it if silly gestures and marginally more appealing styling is all the Moto X is bringing to the table assuming the usual carrier exclusives/2yr subsidy/ meddling in updates/outrageously high retail pricing that NEVER goes down

Now, all that said, IF the X does indeed bring about revolutionary off-contract pricing, then the playing field is wide open and the domestic market could experience a good bit of upheaval. But as of this very moment, based on what we know, these Droids are more interesting to me than the X.

      • Ed Waters

        Well said…I couldn’t agree more.

While I find the Moto X intreguing, the rumored specs of 16GB of storage with no ability to add an SD card and a smaller battery are a turn off for me. If the specs are correct for the Droid Maxx…that will probably be the phone I upgrade to.

        • Dave

          And no LED light….

      • Dave

Plus Sammy will sell 10 Galaxy phones for every one of these sold globally. That’s gotta hurt no matter which way you cut it.

    • chris420o

only phone with a better design is the htc one so not sure why the hope of death…

    • Lucky Armpit

Who cares what it’s called? If it’s 32 GB of internal storage and/or an SD Card slot with a minimal Blur overlay (like my Razr Maxx), it will get my money. They could have called it the “Motorola Droid Gee Whiz Bang Ultimate Cool Daddy-O Holy Hum-Dinger Whoopdy-Doo” phone and I still wouldn’t care.

  • jstew182

I don’t like it to begin with but it bugs the hell out of me that the Verizon logo and everything underneath it isn’t properly centered with the red stripe.

    • Under the bridge downtown

Looks like this is just the plastic protection piece on top.

      • jstew182

There is no way Verizon will allow for any of their branding to be removed! haha

  • Ian Smith

    played out

  • Ryan Powell

Seems odd that the Verizon logo and “LIMITED EDITION” are not centered correctly over top of the red racing stripe.

    • Mark Mann

it looks to be a plastic protective sheet of some sort…unless the back of the phone is glossy

      • Ryan Powell

Good point. Probably the removable wrapper that protects it in the box.

        • Corey Foltman

you can see the sides of the shiny plastic. the phone isnt shiny like that. if they did release a bunch of Limited Edition phones with an off center ‘racing’ strip, that would be a huge fail…since it is verizon, it is possible.

    • jh123416

Unless the body is plastic, that would be wrapping over it.

  • samosa king

    well that escalated quickly.

  • Eric

    Ugly.

  • chris125

Shiny cheap plastic oh no /s

    • DJ SPY

I believe it’s the plastic protective wrap.

      • chris125

I think you missed the /s….
