CyanogenMod Team Teases “Nemesis” With Video, But What’s Nemesis?

Over the weekend, the CyanogenMod team took to their YouTube, hypebeasting a mysterious something called Nemesis. What could it be? The video is not clear, but it starts with the words, “Something wicked this way comes. Nothing can be perfect. Things can be better.”

The words “FREE” flash on an Android device’s lockscreen, but seriously, there is no telling of what this may be. Watch the video and then let’s start brainstorming what could be around the corner from CM.

Cheers asdf!

  • TheOiulkj

Whatever it is, I hope it fires lasers.

  • iupac

y’all are so dumb. I’ve actually run android on an ipod before. It was a first generation ipod touch running freaking FROYO. It was SO unstable. rebooted every twelve seconds, battery died in 2 hours, couldn’t do anything at all. The drivers were not designed for android. Putting cm on an iphone is not feasibly possible. And to the people suggesting that cm will base it off ios, HAHA! good one. stupid.

  • Mathias

Maybe its the nemesis to MIUI?

  • proparham

i think its an online messaging/calling service between CM users. cause “free” is where the operator name should be; so…

  • iT

CM wont touch an iCrap, Apple would sue them before they could release it hahaha

  • Tanuj Chokshi

The background in the video looks like it was taken from iOS 7 beta 3…

  • master94

Either a hardware partner or Samsung like gestures.

  • T3charmy

Am I the only one who pays attention to the repos? https://github.com/cyanogenmod/android_vendor_apple was made about a month ago. but interesting that it exist.

    • MaFo

If you click on it it shows a Troll.png…

      • T3charmy

        I’m aware.

  • Jon

Since “free” is on the carrier id spot, what if Nemesis is a “nemesis” of the big carriers and they are providing a free VoIP service that runs off of Cyanogenmod servers to make free phone calls on your Android phone? Sounds plausible to me.

  • MaFo

Whatever this is, it’s going to be huge.

  • rottenapplerottenteeth

all you faggots clamoring for an iphone running android, gtfo. you are a disgrace to android.

    • Armyof2

      You’re an idiot…

    • geedee82

damn bro I hate apple and iphones just as much as you but no need to be dropping the f-bomb

  • joejoe5709

Personal Opinion? Complete OS overhaul/launcher of Android along the lines of Facebook Home.

Or… I don’t know… Maybe something along the lines of Unbuntu but that seems a bit outlandish.

I’m not sold on the iOS theories. For me, that’s totally off the radar and I can’t see how it would be worth all that work… I’d believe an unlocked Android phone/tablet that comes preloaded with CM before I’d believe anything to do with Apple. Samsung Galaxy S4 CyanogenMod Edition sounds rather tasty.

    • joejoe5709

The more I think about it… the CyanogenMod launcher makes the most sense. Especially if it didn’t require rooting. For those with devices that aren’t 100% updated/supported or for those who don’t want to root, this would be a great option. For those who do root and ROM, maybe this new launcher would bring features we don’t have with the ROM itself. Think about it… even those who run a ROM still often use a launcher of some kind. I’m not techy enough to know, but maybe having the Nemesis launcher with CM would bring a new level of optimization/battery life improvements. I think this would bring CM more into the mainstream because a lot more users would be able to use it and it would show up in the Play Store. Think of it as a “Nemesis” to all the major launchers out there.

  • Caleb Loop

The idea of a CM supported iPhone is pretty crazy. But I think this is some sort of Google now/Lockscreen dealio.

  • itpromike

If you do a freeze frame of the picture they flash you can see it’s an iPad mini on top of an iPhone 5.

  • I wouldn’t buy an iPhone 5, because the hardware isn’t all that impressive to me.

  • David Gray

Isn’t that “ticking” sound from Apple iPhone/iPod?

  • Joshua Bailey

I think we all may be getting it wrong here with the iPhone being Android’s nemesis. I think CM is referring to Android being iPhone’s nemesis and perhaps now Apple’s own hardware will be running Android.

While this still wouldn’t make me buy an iPhone, it would be cool to allow my friends who have iPhones to test-drive Android.

  • JBartcaps

I don’t know if thats an iPhone or not. Help?

    • itpromike

It’s an iPad mini with an iPhone 5 under it mate.

      • Justin W

It looks more like a Nexus 7 running 4.2.

  • Taylor Abrahamson

Oh I SERIOUSLY hope this is CM for iPhone 5!!

  • Nate

Eh. Someone on Reddit posted that Google Now’s project name was Majel referring to Star Trek and that perhaps Nemesis is another nod to Star Trek being functionality similar to Google Now.

Think that Google Now has always been ‘under construction’ as far as the voice commands for the device goes ‘Wifi On/Off’, ‘Bluetooth On/Off’, and ‘Data On/Off’.

I think that this whole idea has credibility with the whole lockscreen/swipe up icon showing. Google now ‘remembers’ so many things and thats what the Right Time/Right Memories is what I think it’s referring to. “Free” is just the carrier, as everything CM does is free so I think we should stop thinking about that.

  • It’s the iPhone 5. You heard it here folks — mark my words. My wallet is ready. Never really thought about buying an iPhone until now. 🙂

    • Hothfox

Honestly, I would buy an iPhone if I could put CM on it.

      • Nate

Then you’d just have a regular Android phone. -_- iPhone is an iPhone because of the OS, not the actual hardware, just my opinion.

        • joejoe5709

Right. The only reason iOS runs so well on that hardware is optimization. So putting Android on that phone would be pointless. Putting iOS on an Android phone would be… hilariously blasphemous.

          • Abhi

There already is Android on an iPhone. Its called the Bear Basic. I think D-L has a post on it.

          • Hothfox

http://www.crazyandroid.com/techdy-launches-basic-bear-android-based-iphone-lookalike/ This? If it’s not an actual iPhone with Android on it, it’s just a look-alike. It has the specs, but the build quality doesn’t look like it’s there, and it seems like it’s just running CyanogenMod. It’s also not even out yet.

        • Hothfox

I like their build quality. One of the reasons I wanted the HTC One was due to the build quality. I’m tired of the cheap plastic phones. The ability to put the OS I love on an iPhone would give me another choice. Just my opinion.

      • joejoe5709

What it it’s a new skinned version of iOS? Wouldn’t that be weird…

    • Skittlez

whats the point of running Android on an iPhone? just to say you’re doing it? other than that, you get a smaller screen thats not HD, and worse specs and no NFC

    • itpromike

The picture above is an iPad mini sitting on top of an iPhone 5.

      • Gnex

        I’m only seeing one device…

  • Daniel

Cross platform Cyanogenmod. A very popular ios dev said in twitter that he found new exploits much bigger than jailbreaking. iPhone is the Nemesis of Android. It’s a very long shot but I’m thinking this has something to do with CM on ios devices

    • MikeCiggy

If this is so then the phone in the tease should be an iPhone. Can’t tell what it is really. But if someone has an iphone 5 in front of them compare the bezels.

      • Armyof2

Looking at pictures on the web this could be an iPhone…in fact I’m pretty certain it is…

        • BrianCherry

It’s most likely not an iPhone since it has the Nav bar.

          • Joshua Bailey

The iPhone 5’s extra wide screen may be perfect to incorporate a nav bar and keep the 16:9 ratio.

          • BrianCherry

Yea but who knows how the apps would react to this. Since iOS only runs on 4 specific screen sizes.

          • Adam Metzner

You can activate the on screen nav bar on any CM phone with a simple build.prop edit.

          • BrianCherry

Yea but it wouldn’t be useful at all. especially since iOS is set around 1 button and in-application control. Even on Android you can see (the apps that have been ported over) that don’t use the back button correctly or are just unusable. Also what would be the point having a physical button and on-screen buttons. Pie control would make more sense. Its like the S3 or S4 with a Nav Bar.

          • Luke Sketch Brickley

iOS wouldn’t be set along that one button control anymore if you ran CM on it. the SOFTWARE is what makes it 1 button. CM can make the touch screen more important again.

      • MaFo

This is definitely an iPhone 5!

    • Daniel

Too hard to tell personally. Up to yall

      • itpromike

It’s an iPad mini sitting atop an iPhone 5

        • Ryan Chapman

We heard you the first 50 times you said it.

    • itpromike

This is definitely iOS related. The picture is of an iPad mini sitting on top an iPhone.

  • bboyairwreck

Well there was a news article earlier about a Popular iOS jailbreaker tweeting that he figured out something “bigger than jailbreak”. I wonder if the CM team maybe combined with him to get Android on an iPhone. I doubt it but just throwing out ideas here.

  • abc

In the brief flash of the phone, I find it curious that they nav buttons are loading. I wonder if they’ve got additional mods for the nav bar?

    • Armyof2

If this video is for nav bar mods I think everyone will be sorta disappointed…think it has to be bigger than that

    • MikeCiggy

The nav buttons aren’t loading that button in the middle is the Google Now button on the lockscreen. The nav buttons pop up after the phone is unlocked. This is normal.

  • Mordecaidrake

Maybe they found a hardware partner? haha

  • gregmr

    Universal root tool

  • chaoslimits

Lightweight, highly optimized version of Cyanogen.

  • dhuff

I think it’s security related as Kondik has expressed his views on privacy violations.

  • Fahad Beg

I think it might be a unified messaging service that works with Google Voice or hangouts.

    • pcdroidski

Supposedly Google’s working on that already

      • Fahad Beg

They already tried that and it obviously didn’t work. Its called hangouts ._.

        • pcdroidski

I wouldn’t say it didn’t work but rather they haven’t implemented the all the features yet. It’s a WIP that’ll probably take a while

    • Koush already did this. It’s merged.

  • MichaelFranz

i have to say when a Rom dev team throws out a tease like that…it gives you chills

  • EC8CH

    • El_Big_CHRIS

As soon as I read the title, I pictured the same thing. Have my upvote 🙂

    • Edward Smith

Hopefully not as bad as the franchise killer of its namesake.

  • Payaso

    New SMS?? New Launcher???

    • Jack Hoffman

Yeah, Koush has been working really hard on his service and has been making a lot of noise on this front. He was also the first one to comment on Kondik’s post teasing NEMESIS, saying how excited he was…

  • Mauricio Sanchez

The quick flash had me thinking it was gonna be a pure CM phone, but the “free” has me lost. Hm… either way, I’m beyond excited. If it is a phone designed by the CM team, that sounds awesome.

  • tyguy829

FREE is a carrier in France, according to a French member of the CM team who is on FREE. http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/07/20/cyanogenmod-teases-something-very-mysterious-a-new-challenger-appears-a-new-nemesis-appears/#comment-970845758

Do you think “Nemesis”=Apple/iPhone? As in, CM on the iPhone?

    • Something something dark side.

      • UndergroundWire

        IT”S A TRAP!

    • joejoe5709

Eh… So? Why would they cater to one French carrier? I’m calling it a coincidence.

      • tyguy829

I think you’re missing the point. XpLoDWilD is on the CM team and uses Free in France according to xda. So, most likely, he is the one that put this teaser together and it is his phone in the video. Not really a coincidence, just a fact that the internet made out to be a hidden message or something.

Edit: In case you aren’t familiar, Android always shows the carrier at the bottom of the lock screen

    • michael arazan

I can’t see any people flashing an iOS rom on their iOS device, except for some developer’s.
