And Here are the First Pictures of the New Nexus 7

 nexus 7-1

Can we officially dub July 17 as “New Nexus 7 Leak Day”? Starting with pricing leaks this morning, followed by the scheduling of a Google Event for next week and retailer inventory dates sneaking into public view, we now also have a first look at the Google-inspired 7-inch tablet. In a series of photos, one of which includes a sticker listing out specs, there may no longer be any surprise to this device.

According to a set of leaked photos (plus a video), we’re looking at a device that looks almost identical to last year’s Nexus 7, aside from an adjusted placement of the “Nexus” logo, addition of a rear camera, and the disappearance of the faux-leather backside. But the overall shell and front side look identical, including the placement of the ports and buttons.

In terms of specs, the device still rocks a 7-inch display, however, this leak didn’t include a mention of the screen’s resolution. We’re also looking at a Snapdragon S4 Pro processor (not surprising since the Snapdragon 600 rumor was thought to be bogus from the get-go), 1.2MP front camera, 5MP rear camera, and what is being listed as 4GB of RAM. The RAM sounds a bit high, especially if this tablet is going to drop in at an insanely low price of $229, so don’t be surprised if that’s wrong and we’re looking at 2GB.

And that’s that. How does she look?

  • Jim Foskett

A bit disappointed there there still isn’t HDMI out or expandable storage but I’d still get one if I had the $.

    • burntcookie90

      There might be MHL

  • Derek Lockovich

Why is there so much bezel on the top and bottom?

    • burntcookie90

      For your thumbs

      • Derek Lockovich

It just seems like an incredibly excessive amount.

  • JMonkeYJ

as someone who is still probably gonna buy it, it’s pretty underwhelming. usually nexus devices have SOMETHING cool/new…does this have anything like that??

  • Elliot Kotis

Tegra 4 please, but I think it won’t sell as well as the original, many people, including myself will get the Nexus 10 2.0

  • Elliot Kotis

Better looking Nexus 7, better put mine on eBay, haven’t used it in ages, I’ll get the Nexus 10 2, 10 inch form factor is a bigger difference to my 4.7″.

  • Kenton Douglas

The ’2-step’ edge design (metal framing of LCD glass; plastic overlapping outer case) is the same as the Moto X

    • SemahjLam

I’m not sure what you’re trying to get at considering this is made by asus and the design hasn’t changed since the original.

      • Kenton Douglas

… basically I wouldn’t be surprised if the next version comes directly from Google/Motorola – cutting out the middleman (Asus)

  • mmoreimi

    Video out :(

  • hoosiercub88

Also did anyone notice the notification LED a la Galaxy Nexus/Nexus 4?

  • hoosiercub88

I really, really hope this supports some sort of physical video out. MHL would be fantastic. That’s what kept me from buying the original Nexus 7, no video out.

    • Steve Benson

Just use dnla. Steams perfectly to any internet connected tv. Used it on my Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 and now my GS3.

      Use: Twonky Beam – https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pv.twonkybeam
      or
      Skifka – https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.skifta.android.app

      Both work great.

      • hoosiercub88

I’m not trying to push video files to my TV though.. I play a lot of emulators and use my tablet, a Xoom, as a console, well the Xoom has HDMI out and is aging not so gracefully.

        So your solution wont work.

        • Steve Benson

Interesting. Yeah, I guess that wouldn’t work.

          • hoosiercub88

I really like the pricing scheme of the N7 and that’s the main reason I haven’t bought one, and the Nexus 10 is just too expensive.. I need a cheapish 7″ tablet with some sort of video out.

          • Steve Benson

Yeah, I hear ya. Plus the N7 is a beast of a tablet for the price. Here’s hoping they tucked MHL under the hood. :)

          • EC8CH

MHL is part of the larger question of their plans for media streaming devices on TV. I’m interesting in hearing what their overall plans are including MHL on the N7.

          • Steve Benson

Yeah, seems like there’s a couple major ways to do this but nobody can decide which is the best and make it an industry standard.

My hope was that Miracast would take off, but sadly it hasn’t.

          • hoosiercub88

Thanks for being reasonable and not screaming how I should conform because nobody needs video out. People these days… :)

          • Steve Benson

You caught me on a good day ;)

  • Xious

Wait, so it looks like it doesn’t have the POGO pins anymore. Which means my current Nexus 7 dock is useless if I purchase the new N7. How completely bogus! Why can’t manufacturers stick with a standard (even if it’s just theirs)?

    • XvierX

      This. My thoughts exactly.

  • idk

Does it support MHL this time?

  • Dee

the second pic – have they added 3g / voice calling function on this?

    if so count me in:)

    • David Hayden

If you’re talking about the number pad, I’m pretty sure that is just for the passcode lockscreen.

      • Dee

i agree – count me out:(

  • Froosh Freak

Ummm… Now THAT’S some innovation in tablet design!!!!!!

    !!!!!!!!!!! (Extra emphasis included)

  • edmicman

Any chance a new Nexus 10 will be joining it?

  • Bionic

    Totally unrelated but…….

    • PhoenixPath

      Godzilla is always relevant.

    • chris420o

is this real….bc if it is…its just…just fanstastic

      • Bionic

        Yup its real

  • Hans Dirk Kwazneski

Why are we comparing the iPad and this? I have BOTH. I’m Navy and the Nexus suits me incredibly when I have network access. Out on the boat, almost nothing works… but the iPad covers that time :) I <3 both my devices, why can't we all just get along?

    • middlehead

Because Apple is an awful company that makes terrible products.

  • droidman101

Im throwing money at the screen but it’s not doing anything.

    • Bionic

      try ejaculating.

      • No

        no

  • Tay

This really doesn’t make me want to ditch my Nexus 7. 16GB with plenty of storage left. Although, I do like the look of it without the “faux-leather”

  • Daeshaun Griffiths

So should i expect a 4.3 rom tmrw?

    • Bionic

no, but maybe on the 25th

  • OneForTheGoodDays

I hope they introduce project mayo.

    • Bionic

      or project lube

      • Adam Schadt

Bro you need to stop. XD

  • jh123416

Is it me or is that a BIG bezel on the bottom?

    • Tyler Durden

      Almost like the xperia

    • Brian Utne

I thought they were gonna get rid of that bezel on the next Nexus O_O….lol

      • hoosiercub88

Why do people want to get rid of bezels.. you need something to hold onto. If there’s no bezel, you’ll constantly be touching the digitizer and that’s bad as well as annoying.

        • Brian Utne

I’m all for the bezel size on the side…but you’d think they’d be able to make a little bit more screen estate from the bottom. It doesn’t bother me, just thought they were gonna make that bezel smaller on the new one.

    • SewWhat

You HAVE to have somewhere to actually hold the tablet…WTF?… Using this thing on the go I don’t want to be daintily holding it around the perimeter trying to avoid touching the screen accidently. It’s not a phone that you can just cup in your hand. That’s why some people are ergonomics engineers and some are just wanna-be trollers that can’t see the use a purpose because they want some thing just to look cooler.

  • BrianCherry

To truly be honest, I would rather Google omit the camera and put the money into higher quality parts, or even keeping the price point the same at $199 and $249. Using a Nexus 10 and Nexus 4, the only time I use the camera on my tablet is when I’m in a direr need to take a photo and my phone and other option are unavailable

    • Justin W

The camera is honestly not worth $30 – that’s likely an increased price due to better and pricier specs otherwise. I believe, with the last iFixit teardown I saw, a 5mp camera sensor was about $2-$3 dollars. Don’t remember when this was, though.

    • grammar nazi

      dire*

      • BrianCherry

        ¿Huh?

    • Adam Schadt

you use a camera on a tablet when you need to note something, not for a photograph. The new scan feature in Google Drive is a great example.

      • Keith Hollis

or depositing checks. Tablet cameras are handy for lots of things other than taking pictures.

        • Adam Schadt

So basically we agree that cameras on tablets are useful, especially because sometimes you need that bigger screen to do certain tasks with more ease.

  • Rob Delaney

It looks like they designed it for horizontal use. Ugh. This is why tablets look better in 4:3 ratio. And the bezels. You would think someone at ASUS who designs tablets would think bezels are ugly. I really hate to say it but I think it will be the iPad mini 2 for me.

  • joejoe5709

Very nice. Not feeling too bad about my 1st gen Nexus7 purchase though. I think I’ll be okay for another year.

  • Bionic

I think the droid life show deserves a Bionic invasion tonight

    • jh123416

If you’ve got new info, I’m sure they’re in!

  • Shamu

anybody think that Google might show us some of KLP?

    • Bionic

      Absolutely not

      • Shamu

you sure, didnt they do that at a google i/o a few years ago?

        • Bionic

          4.3 comes first my friend

          • Shamu

i realize that…but they may tease some new stuff in KLP, however slim it may be

          • http://turbofool.com Jarrett Lennon Kaufman

They don’t tease. They unveil. This will ship with, or be instantly updated to, 4.3 Jelly Bean.

          • Bionic

            exactly

  • OneForTheGoodDays

Please tell me (the guy who shattered his N7 after dropping it 2 feet) that it has gorilla glass….

    • Timothy McGovern

how do you even drop it two feet? Are you el midget?

      • OneForTheGoodDays

twas on a couch and I by mistake swiped it…. it fell.

        • Brian Utne

You must have swiped pretty hard.

    • http://turbofool.com Jarrett Lennon Kaufman

Even so, Gorilla Glass primarily resists scratching, not shattering.

    • Mitch Joa

My N7 broke a week and a half ago, I’m also really hoping it has gorilla glass…but I am glad that I now have an excuse to get the N7-2 :)

  • mini-me

Still rocking my nexus 7 32gb 1st gen. If this had a 64gb i would make the jump. Waiting to see what the Nexus 5 has to offer. But it does look sweet

  • Geoffrey Gunter

I’m sad they got rid of the faux leather.

  • landon

  • Johnson Ta

Looks like Google finally addressed the issue of having only 1 clock displayed on the lockscreen instead of two. In the video at @0:43 mark, you can see the status bar clock disappear as he is going on the second page of the lockscreen.

  • Gary Graf

Been looking to upgrade from my Galaxy Tab 7.7, which is what 2 or 3 years old. The specs of this don’t look that much better, and the 7.7 looks thinner and better looking as well. Damn.

  • Hatyrei

I saw the dial-pad does’t mean,i can make calls with the new Nexus 7 too :)?

    • EC8CH

      No

because that was an unlock screen you saw

      • Michael

idiot it was sarcasm. read the internet some time…gosh.

        • mustbepbs

          You sure told him.

        • EC8CH

          The internet…. I’ve read it.

  • justjmatt

    Just announce it already.

  • Tyler James Edward Hills

Was hoping for the 600 but this is still no slouch. Had a 1080p display been confirmed for it yet?

  • DJ SPY

I was all set to buy this until I forgot to cancel my amazon prime trial. Now I’m going to geta Fire HD. Can’t let instant video go to waste.

    • EC8CH

or maybe amazon could release a video app for android some day???

      please

      • DJ SPY

Someday could mean a long time or never. I think this is why they don’t release one for Android. They’re gaining a buyer (me) because of it. If it was available on Android then I wouldn’t be getting the Fire HD (they would lose a sale) instead I’d buy the Nexus 7.

        • EC8CH

That very well could be the reason. They do offer all of their other services (music, books, etc) on android, so it’s a little weird they hold back on their video service.

          • SubMatrix

although the lack of a native app sucks, instant video works just fine in the browser (though I’m sure you knew that already).

          • EC8CH

yes… but thanks for the reminder.

          • DJ SPY

            Which browser?

          • SubMatrix

I’ve used stock browser and Quick ICS (I use this daily for the thumb controls). Chrome doesn’t support flash.

    • Mitch Joa

…I forgot I even made a trial! Just checked my account and there’s the fee I paid -_-

      • DJ SPY

I know how you’re feeling man, sucks!

      • XvierX

I did the exact same thing and didn’t realize I had it until there were only two months left.

  • MacNificent

i need this in my life

  • Tyler Casilio

So should I sell my current one on Swappa? lol

    • Geoffrey Gunter

I’m thinking of doing it. Mine runs okay but is somewhat laggy at times, and I’m hoping the successor will be buttery smooth again. Plus the 1080 screen is nice.

      • Bionic

mine is seeing some few minor hiccups as well. But here is the key. After you get 4.3, do a factory data reset and clean out all of that garbage data. This is what I plan to do. I guarantee it will be almost like new.

        • Justin W

My Nexus 10 also is experiencing speed issues. I’m going to buy this Nexus 7 either way, but I think I’m going to sell my N10 if I can get a decent amount for it.

          • Bionic

I use my tablet for browsing the web almost exclusively. Minor lag aside, it still serves me very well and I see no reason to upgrade at this time. Maybe a couple years from now I will.

Im not someone who needs a tablet for many things so im going to stick with the nexus 7 line for that very reason.

And its also nice to know I will get the newest android OS within a week every time.

          • Justin W

Yeah. I prefer the 7″ form factor because of how difficult it can be to type on a 10″ display (and I haven’t found a good keyboard layout for larger tablets yet). I’m pretty sure this will be the tablet I’ll keep for a couple of years – I can’t keep upgrading that (and really, there’s no need to) if I want to keep up my phone habits.

          • Prox

            Swift key tablet

          • chris420o

These are my exact feelings…i LOVE my n7 and i use it more then i thought I would when i bought it…it actually got me reading again because i enjoy reading off it so much…i am a flashaholic and yet to even unlock my bootloader bc i havent seen a reason to…yeah it hiccups every now n then but ive never had any real issues that annoyed me…i have been planning on unlocking n flashing some paranoid android on it but been waiting till the new n7 comes out to see if its worth the upgrade and from the looks of it i dont see why i would waste the money…i actually prefer the look of the og n7 to this

  • eddy

i hope availability is not an issue!

    • Bionic

This go around, I wouldnt think so.

  • Booyabobby

In the video, you see that it also has a LED indicator. Like the one on the Galaxy Nexus.

    • Daniel Walsh

      I saw that too.

    • Larry Bublitz

      OOOOOOOOOO REEELY?
      Awesome!

    • trophynuts

at the 35 second mark to be exact. Sweet

  • ddevito

    Great.

Step 2 is to get better Android tablet apps.

  • Trevor

Let me guess, no pogo pins making my current Nexus dock $40 worth of useless plastic.

    • EC8CH

silly trevor…. even if it had pogo pins they still wouldn’t be compatible and the new dock wouldn’t be available for at least another 4-6 months.

      • Trevor

        So painfully true.

    • http://turbofool.com Jarrett Lennon Kaufman

Odds are it wouldn’t have been compatible, anyway.

      • sirmeili

I don’t see why not. If it’s the same size and the pins are in the same place, it should have worked. I’m not upgrading because I actually love my POGO dock. It gets put in it every night and I use the tablet as a clock (especially with the nice Beautiful Widgets Daydream on it, at least I think that’s what it is).

I actually dislike that my OG transformer doesn’t have a similar dock and I don’t know if I want another tablet without it.

    • sirmeili

I agree, I would have highly considered this upgrade if they had added them. Maybe if they put out the accessories for these features when the device is released, they would sell more.

My only hope is that it will have inductive charging and somehow it will fit into a similar dock (which I use a table side clock/weather station at night).

  • Daniel Walsh

There’s a video too. Don’t forget the video.

  • Shadowstare

Google, Shut up and take my money.

    • IHATEHIPSTERSSS

More cheap plastic. Sad part is the iPad mini still has a better GPU.

      • joejoe5709

        For twice the price.

      • Tyler Durden

So this is what autism looks like.

        • Inquizitor

That’s what you have? I always wondered.

          • Tyler Durden

Two trolls on one thread. I guess the work day isn’t over.

          • Inquizitor

The fact that you’re calling me and the dude who pointed out reasonable gripes about the tablet (in other words, a legitimate comment) trolls is either pathetically trollish or just plain dumb. Go back to the bridge you live under.

          • Tyler Durden

He’s an obvious apple troll. The mini is worse and more expensive.

          • IHATEHIPSTERSSS

The iPad mini is worse because it has a better GPU? Dat fandroid logic.

          • Bionic

My wife has the ipad mini and it serves her well. I have a 7 and it serves my purposes perfectly, but they are not in the same class. There is a major price difference.

          • Ronaldo

WHAT DOES SARGE THINK ABOUT IT?

          • AndreKP2124

Use your brain in first place. The Adreno 320 that the Nexus 7 2 has is better than the Power VR SGX543 MP2 the iPad Mini has.

          • Geoff Johnson

            No, because Android > iOS

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

You REALLY need something better to do in life! All you seem to do is troll the comments of EVERY Droid-Life post!

          • Bionic

            shut up

          • Inquizitor

My reaction seeing your comment, its upvotes, and then the downvotes on mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hF6McQXWu78

          • ha!

Calling people “trolls” is the biggest troll move ever. Stop being an internet hater and man up. Apple, android, either way gfy!

        • Simon Belmont

Not funny. Really in bad taste.

Autism is something a lot of families have to deal with on a daily basis. It’s wrong to use it as a description for someone that bothers you.

      • Bionic

        It’s $329

      • meijin3

        What are you doing here?

      • kixofmyg0t

        …to drive a 1024×768 screen.

        Oh and it’s $100 more.

        Fail.

        • IHATEHIPSTERSSS

So you’re saying the new nexus 7 will have to drive an even higher resolution display with a worse GPU than the iPad mini?

          Fail.

          • Bionic

why the fuckk does it matter? they are not the same thing

          • turdbogls

sure they are. they are both small tablets…they are just priced completely different.

          • kixofmyg0t

Yep. It has a much more powerful CPU, much higher res display. GPU is a tad weaker you got me there though.

            Oh AND it’s $100 cheaper?

More wins than fails in my book.

          • AndreKP2124

The Adreno 320 is better. He is thinking that the iPad Mini has the Power VR SGX554 MP4 the iPad 4 has.

          • kixofmyg0t

You’re absolutely right. I didn’t even bother to double check his claim.

I corrected my statement in accordance.

          • XphoneTroll

I think you are in the wrong form buddy. GTFO..

      • Capt. Crunch

You know if you wanna badmouth an Android product I’m sure you’ll get a lot more upvotes on Cult of Mac or some other Apple site.

      • siphyn

Thats not true. The iPad mini pushes 1024×768 resolution. The adreno 320 in the Nexus 4 pushes 1280×768 resolution at the same if not higher fps in benchmarks. Read up.

        http://www.anandtech.com/show/6429/ipad-mini-review/7

      • Simon Belmont

Don’t feed the trolls guys! This guy has been trolling Android comment sections for a while now.

He started at TechnoBuffalo but then sadly his trolling leaked to other sites. Avoid!

    • New_Guy

That thing is sexy with a capital X.

      • Scottyb112

I hate the 1″+ bezel on the top and bottom, and about half inch around the sides. To me that makes it look kinda crappy from the front when its on, like the current Nexus 7. But I bought it anyways, and will probably buy this.

        • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

I actually kinda like the bezels, it gives you plenty of room to hold onto when reading an ebook or even just scrolling through Facebook! But to each his own!

          • Scottyb112

You are correct in that aspect of the usability of it. With next to no bezel you’d always have to hold the screen which would make you keep touching things. But as far as the look of it, I don’t like it. It just looks like every other cheap 7″ tablet out there, they kind of all have that same exact look. (from the front atleast so far) I would of liked a little thinner of a bezel.. but i’m not the one making them, so my input means nothing

    • Froosh Freak

Can’t you already buy this exact tablet?

      • middlehead

        No.

  • JG

I dont get the sideways “Nexus”. Are they shooting for horizontal use? I like palming my OG Nexus 7 in one hand.

    • http://www.droid-life.com Kellex B

Maybe just some sort of weird design idea.

      • Adam Emshwiller

it’s so the person next to you can read “nexus” and ask you… is that the new ipad mini?

i can’t stand when people ask that question to me.

        • Shamu

i know…its some sort of nerdy rage that makes me want to pull out a lightsaber and yell uncontrollably

      • Kie

My idea is that they decided to put the logo that way so people could read it as you hold the tablet up to take pictures/videos

Either way, it’s free advertisement. I think they are trying to push for more of a horizontal design with this one, but I’m not sure why either would matter. It would make more sense if the resolution is truly 1920×1200, though.

Its so when you take a pic the right way that is landscape the other person can read the words upright.

      • EC8CH

there is no right way to take a picture with a tablet.

        :-P

    • EC8CH

With the horizontal logo placement and the large top and bottom bezels (room for grabbing maybe) it almost seems that way.

The nice thing is the side bezels seem smaller, so one handing it in portrait should be even easier.

Good point. If they slimmed the tablets sides when viewing the device in portrait type orientation it would be ideal imo. Top and bottom bezels don’t bother me all that much.

It’s probably a prototype. That’s my guess anyway.

The likelihood of a cost conscious tablet actually having 4GB of RAM right now is about as likely as IHATEHIPSTERSSS giving anything related to Android a genuine compliment. In other words, nil.

I hate the fact that “Nexus” is landscape, and “Asus” is portrait.

  • dannyWHITE

Is it me or does that chin look HUGE!

    • Chris Hannan

      Both

  • warenmac

Top and bottom bezels are still quite large, 4gb of ram sounds ludicrous

    • Daniel Walsh

      It’s 2gb, not 4,

    • Trevor

I noticed that with the bezel too. Especially the bottom one.

      • Chris Hannan

They seem even larger than the current Nexus. :(

        • zurginator

I think the top and bottom are the same, with smaller sides.

  • Carlos Lopez

Hopefully it’s exactly like the original but.. you know.. better :D

    first here

      How does it feel?

      • Michael

Now to wait for the new Nexus 10…..

    • Mark Coppock

That’s what I’m really interested in… My Nexus 10 replaced my Nexus 7 months ago as my daily driver.

    • BrianCherry

Since using a Nexus 10, I highly doubt Google going to release another variant of the Nexus 10 since it didn’t sell all to well and only making 1 accessory. They never even hinted at a compatible Pogo accessory let alone a Pogo charger.

I’m waiting for the Nexus 5 Leak Day
