Verizon Hosting July 23 Press Event to Unveil Next Generation of “Their Most Popular Family” of Devices

verizon logo

Verizon has invited us to a media-only event on July 23 with few details other than that they plan to “unveil the next generation of one of their most popular family of devices.” I’d say that means we should plan to welcome in the DROID ULTRA, DROID MAXX, and DROID Mini as early as next Tuesday. Unless you can think of another family of devices that has been rumored like wild over the last few weeks, I can’t imagine it being anything else.

We’ll be there of course, bringing you all of the details.

  • rogerdodger

hTc One. Droid- boring, mediocre phones… Enough already, RELEASE IT!!! (The One, of course)

  • c_hack

Can’t wait for the Droid Bionic Ultra HD Pro Maxxx

    • chris420o

      lame

  • chris420o

i got blisters on my fingers!

  • Adam Truelove

Hooray for more mediocre phones with at least 3 Verizon logos on them, bastardized versions of Android, and 38 pre-installed bloatware apps!!!

  • chris420o

meh to the design of this phone…i am a fan of motos lines and the kevlar(i like the industrial look and feel in hand)…but meh to the chin and the bezel…and meh to the hardware buttons…like come on…look how gorgeous the x looks and the other nexus devices clean black slate ftw

  • aDROIDfreeworld

I’m sure these will be nice quality phones. But being DROID devices they suffer major drawbacks compared to Moto X.

DROID does lots of VZW bloatware
DROID does a ugly UI overlay for extra lag
DROID does fake “kevlar” paint on plastic
    DROID does slower updates
DROID does stupid last gen, non-Google compliant hardware nav keys
DROID does horrible micro USB port placement
    DROID does EXTRA fragmentation
    DROID has loud obnoxious ringtones
DROID makes you a walking poster board for Verizon
DROID makes you a tool for free advertising for Verizon
DROID is not optimized for Android
    DROID does stupid commercials
DROID does stupid angular shaped phones for perfectly uncomfortable everyday use

DROID needs to be put out of its misery.

    AMEN.

    MOTO X FTW

  • Eric R.

Droid 5, I want a new upgraded QWERTY

  • DJ SPY

Can’t you people read? The “DROID” FAMILY is THEIR most popular. They didn’t say the most popular phone family in the whole industry. I remember reading on droid forums in January or February that the DROID RAZR Maxx HD was the best selling phone over at Verizon in November and December.

  • Holland Capone

I’m hoping for an AWS capable version :/

  • ToddAwesome

    Viva MAXXil!

What are your guys’ thoughts as to what would differentiate these phones from the Moto X / XFON? Hardware wise it looks like these will be on par with the Moto X from all the rumors( 5-incher with Full HD screen, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU and 2 GB of RAM. A 10 MP rear camera), If not on par with the Moto X than at least with the other major players that released phones this year (HTC, LG, Sony, & Samsung). The specs are probably higher than the XFON but we’re not sure if those XFON specs are indeed true, as far as we know from rumors. So who will these phones be targeted towards and how will they separate from the X phone variants? Also aren’t these phones supposed to have similar software features as the Moto X that we saw unveiled on droid life the other day just probably not as many of the new sensors? At some points I wonder if these are the Verizon names for the X phone family, but at other times I feel these will be separate brands

    • nate

“Hardware wise it looks like these will be on par with the Moto X from all the rumors( 5-incher with Full HD screen, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU and 2 GB of RAM. A 10 MP rear camera)”

Those are the rumored specs for the Droid Ultra and Maxx. The moto x is rumored to have very mid range specs: Dual core S4 pro CPU and 4.5″ 720p screen.

      • Justin W

Don’t forget – the Moto X is a family of devices, not just one. That’s the “mini” version, or so I’ve heard.

        • nate

          nooooo….

          • Justin W

            yeeeaaahh………

          • nate

can you point me to an article about it? I hadn’t heard anything about a family of devices… Just different model numbers across carriers.

          • Justin W

There is an XFON and a Moto X designation. Also, how does the Moto X, with a dual core Snapdragon S4 Pro reach the levels of a Snapdragon 600 processor (a quad-core with power equivalent to or more powerful than an A15 design)? There are signs that point clearly to another device being put into play within the next few months.

      • droidrazredge

There are three variants of the X-Phone family scheduled for rlease within the next four quarters. “XFON” which is the Mini Version, “Hero” Phone which is the Moto X, and “NOVA” which is the game changer version of the Moto X. I know the XFON is a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro dual-core MSM8960 1.7 GHz (the GPU should then be 320 Adreno) with 2GB Ram, we think that it’s a dual core because that’s what the leaks have been saying, but benchmarks prove that this either isn’t the case or the software is truly optimized. What it can also mean is that two of the cores are for other sensors on the phone since the 600 and 800 series of the Snapdragon have technology built in for low powered sensors so the actually phone reads as a dual-core. I think it’s the latter of the three. I was comparing the Razr family to the Moto X since we don’t know much about the Moto X at this point.

        • nate

When did we find out there were multiple versions of the moto x? I must have missed something. DL just said that verizon would be getting 4 moto phones: Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, Droid mini, and moto x. Moto X would be the same across all carriers with minimal bloatware. again, i could have missed something. could you point me to an article?

  • NIGHTSCOUT

    So…. a new iPhone?

  • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

Do we have confirmed specs on processor? I feel like I haven’t ever seen the purported hardware specs for these phones. Have I missed them at some point? I’m guessing Snapdragon 600 but 800 would be nice.

    • Justtyn Hutcheson

I believe that there was a rumor of the 800 sneaking in there, but I can’t remember if it was at all confirmed.

      • Guest

would this be the new droid razr family or the Moto X that is coming after the XFON ghost ?

      • Guest

What do you believe would differentiate these phones from the Moto X ?Aren’t these phones supposed to have similar software features as the Moto X just not as vanilla skinned as the Moto X will be ?

  • droidrazredge

Bring on the Ultra Droid Razr Family and Moto X family next Tuesday!!!!! It will be interesting to see what happens with Verizon and their announcement next week.

  • Iron_Catastrofe

Honestly, if the specs are good and the radios/build quality/etc are top notch then I might pick one up. It’s quite a bore to have to charge your phone or use it minimally in order to maintain long battery life. I bet someone will figure out how to get that bootloader unlocked (just like they did with the razr hd) and as long as I get some cyanogenmod on it I’ll be fine. We’ll see what happens though..

  • Sam

I hope they’re announcing the new Droid phones, I can’t wait to see the new Droid Maxx.

  • feztheforeigner

Most popular? It’s definitely the Galaxy S5

  • MichaelFranz

im honestly torn right now. Depending on what drops here i may pick one up. might have to see how unlockable the bootloader will be maybe there is a new exploit method and maybe its easier. Moto has always been great with hardware. Would love to see a sharp camera, 1080p screen, top notch processor that isnt last years news. Moto X sounds nice and all but i just dont think spec wise its what i want. I’ll probably end up waiting a month or so after then i will make up my mind

  • Zach Armstrong

The New Droid Line up of phone’s will be revealed With the same terrible dated Verizon styling

  • joejoe5709

This wouldn’t the be the “Nexus” family of devices would it? They’re pretty popular too…

I’m kidding. But also wishing and praying. ;-)

  • Jeremy

Wouldn’t this also include the Moto X?

    • Justin W

No, the Moto X isn’t a DROID branded device. That will be announced by Moto since it’ll be cross-carrier, whereas the Droid line is exclusive to Verizon.

  • Jeremy

Wouldn’t this also include the Moto X?

  • D.B.Evans

It’s sad that Verizon has such a poor Android offering this year.

I’m not won-over by the S4, and the Note doesn’t fit in my pocket. The only one of the rumored Droid phones even on my radar is the MAXX. I was interested in the HTC Butterfly S (the non-US name for the phone that followed the Droid DNA), but it appears that Verizon has dropped the DNA2 entirely now despite early rumors, instead getting the HTC One late. As for other Android phones from LG, Sony, etc … not a peep on Verizon rumors, and given their history I’m not hopeful for those options to even be in consideration.

Given the options, the HTC One is still the most promising to me – the front facing speakers and the design are great – and I prefer Sense over other OEM skins (although ideally would want more vanilla Android). Or, I may need to re-evaluate T-Mobile; better selection and price, and coverage is good at my home and work … but their coverage has been poor to non-existent in the past for friends who have joined us at some places we’ve gone for vacations and weekend getaways. And AT&T and Sprint are non-starters for me due to poor signal strength at my home and work.

    • UpdatesFromHTCAreAJoke

Sounds like you need the HTC One GOOG Ed

  • hahaha, Android

Why would Verizon be announcing the new iPhone and not Apple?

  • shdowman

    StarTACs??

    • Mike Hilal

      I loved mine

    • landon

      My mom had one :p

    • MacNificent

i had a timeport and a startac. loved them both!

  • QDOG8

I hate when blogging sites post things like this. They always leave out key details, like…what time it’s going to be so we can follow along??

    • imns

The event is a week away. I’m sure they’ll let us know what time to sit in front of our computers before then.

  • TheRobotCow

I’m hoping the maxx will have a good sized battery along with the rumored hardware and specs.

    • yep

the “maxx” name rather implies it will have a good sized battery, does it not?

      • TheRobotCow

Yea I know that but im hoping that it’ll be big enough for power users

        • DJ SPY

The current Maxx HD gives me between 6 and 7 hours of screen on time. The leaked advertisements for the new Maxx say to expect 48 hours of battery life. That’s up from the current 32 hour battery life on the Maxx HD.

          • TheRobotCow

Wow that’s awesome, and how long does the battery last you on average?

          • DJ SPY

I’m a very heavy user so I get home with about 35-40% left in the tank. From 8:30am to 9:30pm. All 4Glte usage, no Wi-Fi. Streaming Netflix and YouTube, lots of texting, web surfing, calls and listening to music. Of course if I choose to download stuff using uTorrent than it drains battery faster. Same for uploading large files to Google Drive.

    • Bionic

4000mah or 3500mah. Not sure which. Probably 4000

      • hkklife

Any idea if the screen was ever confirmed as 5″ 720P or 1080P? Either way, the Maxx could still end up being the sleeper hit of the year on VZW.

        • EC8CH

I believe the Maxx screen is supposed to be 5″ 1080P and the exact same screen will be used on the larger X phone rumored to be out in october.

  • Tyler Durden

Bring in all these non important phones. Guess you could buy it for battery or get a Note 2 and a 9000mah battery.

  • Damian

So far this will have been the most significant thing Verizon will have announced all year.
    Where is the event at?

  • Jordan

And at the event, they will be unveiling the DROID Ultra Max+ with a new exclusive built-in microwave!

  • kixofmyg0t

I see verizon finally decided when to annouce the 5″ Moto X AKA DROID Ultra.

    • Justtyn Hutcheson

Motorola has made some poor decisions I’ll grant, but dear God let this not be one of them.

More likely, this device is more or less “standard”, proving that Motorola *can* make a device with beastly specs, but for their own flagships they simply decided not to.

      • Anon

The proof will lie in more than the device. The real proof will be how Motorola/Google supports the Ultra/Ultra Maxx with updates.

We know the Moto X will be, there’s tons of marketing riding on it. But while I’d be tempted by the Ultra Maxx myself, my concern is it will be a phone whose support is orphaned sooner than it should be.

        • LiterofCola

Don’t forget that closer towards the Google acquisition, updates were flying on the Razrs and Razr Maxxs. There was on point when the Razr recieved jellybean before the Nexus did.

  • BloodiedWraith

It’s a shame that since VZW announced they were going to carry the HTC One we haven’t heard a damn thing. Now it’ll get overshadowed by the new announcement/launch of the new family of DROID devices. And they’ll launch with huge marketing like usual and the HTC One will have none and it’ll fail when it’s easily the best phone out there.

But this sucks, because I really want the HTC One (I have one for my work line with AT&T) but if the specs are what have leaked for the DROID MAXX then I’m going to reconsider. However, if the HTC One is still able to be HTC Dev unlocked I’ll easily choose that over the DROID because I know it’ll be locked up tight.

    • KleenDroid

I agree, It is the best phone right behind the S4.

      • BloodiedWraith

The S4 is awful… I used it for a little while and couldn’t stand it. The build is crap, the reception sucks, the UI is absolutely awful still and manages to lag even with the great specs, and I find the camera better on the HTC One. It worked great with a stock ROM on it but it still didn’t fix the lackluster Samsung radios and the build quality.

        • KleenDroid

We all have our opinions. But having owned it since day one on Verizon I’m not sure what you mean by bad reception. I’ve had great reception always. Also don’t know what’s wrong with the build quality. I think that’s just one of those things people repeat to be cool. One person said that about a Samsung phone a long time ago and now everyone who doesn’t own one needs to say it.

I’ve shown the phone to many people and not one has ever said man that has poor build quality…. Lol. It’s just one of those message board sayings. Kinda like those that are too cool for the Amazon app store because it kills their battery. Another myth.

Yes the S4 has some lag while stock which is unacceptable. Touchwiz while having some nice features is massive in size.

          • BloodiedWraith

I didn’t use the VZW one so I can’t say anything about the reception on that model, but I was using the one from AT&T because I work there and don’t have to actually pay to use all the newest and greatest phones. But reception is always an issue with Samsung; they seem to always have horrible radios. My VZW Galaxy Nexus is one of the worst phones I’ve ever used reception wise and many others have shared that same sentiment.

Also, everyone complains about the build quality of Samsung’s phones… Most of the customers in my store choose the S4 Active over the regular S4 mainly because it feels better in the hand and doesn’t feel cheap. Not to mention you tap on the back of the phone and the whole thing reverberates.

          • KleenDroid

Yes I know several who are on AT&T who have problems with reception on every phone, not just Samsung. I say that because the same Verizon version has great reception.

I bought the Gnex on day one on Verizon. For the first week I had the worst reception I’ve ever experienced in my life. I would drop calls in areas that had great coverage. I was very worried that the phone was junk. Verizon told me they were making some changes that should help. Sure enough about two weeks later everything was fine. Ever since I had very good reception everywhere.

I think it has something to do with the towers. Whatever adjustments they made worked. Nothing was done to the phone. And believe me when I say that for almost two weeks the phone was almost useless so I know what you mean. Even though you work for AT&T you could still buy a Verizon phone for outside of work use and enjoy a better experience.

Salespeople have a great deal of influence on customers. If you suggest that a phone is low build quality they will tend to believe you. You should allow them to form their own opinions unless you have certain phones you are required to push. There is no way very many people think it feels like junk. They are busy thinking they all look nice but are trying to decide what they want.

But many already have a good idea what they want when they come in. Those that don’t will be influenced by your suggestions.

The average person walking in is not thinking about “build quality”. Yes they will notice how it feels in hand. And just a tip: just because a phone is light doesn’t mean it has poor “build quality”.

I know you know better. You could explain to every customer that aparticular phone had the best build quality and they would bbelieve you. So I feel you are influencing them based on your opinion. Which is based on what you read somewhere.

  • jbank

Crossing my fingers for even a mention of the Moto X at the event…

    • EC8CH

      I seriously doubt it.

    • Justtyn Hutcheson

Not a snowball’s chance in hell. Motorola will have their own event. Motorola will probably only be mentioned in passing. These are Verizon’s devices.

  • T4rd

See Droid. See Droid die! Die, Droid, DIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!!!! X-0

    • Joseph Pojunis

You say this, as you post on DROID-Life. Come on, now.

      • T4rd

The Droid moniker was cool in 2009 through 2010. You can’t deny the joke it has become since then.

Maybe it’s time for a name change for the site..? I can’t really think of anything better though. Maybe “F*ck-you-Verizon-Life” =D.

  • EC8CH

Who wants to bet the Moto X isn’t released on VZW until after these new Droid phones???

    • Jason

Wasn’t this already stated in a few leaks? @evleaks and others have been saying 8/8 for the Droid phones and a few other reports indicated 8/23 for the Moto X.

      • EC8CH

I’m just saying, had to wait to buy a G-Nex… so I know how this works.

        • Jason

Sure, same thing all over again. Just adding in that there’s more than suspicion at this point. As Jordan says below, pretty much a fact at this point.

          • EC8CH

They must have a firmer date on the Droid phone’s launch this time ;-)

    • Jordan

      That’s not a bet, that’s a fact.

      • NexusPhan69

If the moto x is released on other carriers before Verizon even announces they’ll carry the moto x I’m done with Verizon. $30 unlimited text and data + 100 minutes from Tmobile is perfect for me. I’m hanging by a thread Verizon. Show me you don’t suck as much as we all think you do please.

    • Joseph Pojunis

I willing to bet that these droids will be released before the Moto X on ANY carrier. Simply because the Moto X will have a later launch date.

      • Lucky Armpit

I’ve learned my lesson in the past about rushing into a phone. From early reports it appears that the Droid Ultra Maxx is the one for me, as the Moto X with its paltry storage (16GB) and no SD Card has officially been struck from my wish list. If the Droid Ultra has a 32 GB storage model, that’s the one I want. I can deal with no SD Card if the internal storage is large enough. So I’ll wait to see what the official specs are in the next few weeks, wait until a root method is released (I only need root; couldn’t care less about an unlocked bootloader or custom ROMs), and make my purchase. My Razr Maxx has served me well but it’s time to move on. That’s assuming Moto didn’t Blur the Droid Ultra to death.

    • Bionic

      Correct

    • Justtyn Hutcheson

Why does it even matter? Its not like anyone is expecting the Moto X on any carrier until 8/23.

    • NemaCystX

Its a duh because these DROIDs are the final devices that Google, err I mean Motorola needs to push out of the release pipeline so they can release the Moto X

Its amazing how different the design is since Google took the reigns.

      • DJ SPY

Yeah, they went back to 2011 by re releasing the Galaxy Nexus but changed the name.

      • EC8CH

Galaxy nexus design style with motorola radios and build quality with pretty much stock android… perfect combination IMHO

        • LiterofCola

          for a mid-range phone sure

    • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

I am so confused with all these damn phones? I thought the Droid Ultra was Verizon’s version of the Moto X?

      • EC8CH
        • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

          THANK YOU!
Moto really needs to do something with this whole releasing a slew of devices at one time thing! It makes it hard to keep track of which one is which and which one will have what!

          • EC8CH

Blame VZW for all the “Droid” phones.

I think when they release their own “X” phones they will begin a predictable timeline of releases for their own family of devices.

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

I just hope that Moto eventually follows through and lets some of the Droid lineup aesthetics bleed over into the Moto X lineup because the Droid Razr lineup is true tanks built to take a beating and while they may not be powerhouses in terms of specs, they get the job done! To me the one thing they are missing from the Moto X is durability of course there has been no official drop tests or what have you but a wood or plastic backing with glass doesn’t sound nearly as durable as the kevlar and metal mixed with Gorilla glass!

          • EC8CH

They claimed improving durability was one of their design goals for the X… we’ll have to see if they did anything substantial or if it’s just some marketing gimmick.

I’m not one who thinks a phone needs to be metal to be durable though. Plastic if done right is ok with me.

          • LiterofCola

Exactly, you can’t beat the durability of the Droid line.

          • Joe

The part of the phone that breaks is the glass, so until they have shatter-proof screens, don’t worry about it.

          • https://www.facebook.com/aaron.williams.125 Champion1229

Gorilla Glass 3 is about as shatterproof as you can get! I’ve personally never had any issues besides the time when I dropped my phone down a flight of outdoor stairs and the phone landed on a giant rock at the bottom. However for normal wear and tear, GG 3 is more than enough to keep from getting scratched by keys / change in pockets and normal drops.

          • michael arazan

Verizon has never released 2 New Phones by the Same manufacturer at the Same time ever. I think they’ll push back the X by 1-2 months as well. Verizon paid millions for “Droid” and will run it into the ground until they feel they got their money out of it.

In 2009-2010 Verizon committed 200 million to advertising and Licensing for Droid campaign

          • LiterofCola

Considering Verizon never announced anything and we’ve all been running on speculation and rumors, looks like people have just been confusing themselves.

    • ChuckG73

Actually I was one of the few that waited and waited for the Nexus One on VZW.

  • OG Droid

    Zzzzz….

  • Josh Shaw

    Viva Movil branded phones!

    • Jason

      Winner!

    • WickedToby741

IT’S LIKE THEY KNOW! No joke as soon as I finished reading your comment a commercial with J-Lo it came on TV.

    • Richard Yarrell

      Verizon SUCKS MONKEY BALLS

      • LiterofCola

        so do you

      • squiddy20

Wow. The 50+ year old man who talks like he’s 7 strikes again. Any chance you’ll grow up and start using a vocabulary that reflects your actual age?

        • TylerChappell

You can’t expect respectable behavior to come from people with such low IQ’s. I wish there was a way to block people so we don’t have to be burdened with seeing their posts.

          • squiddy20

There’s a way, and it’s called a ban. This same guy has been banned from Phandroid 4 times, Android Police, and Android Central all over 2 years ago, and again from AC’s forums about 35 weeks ago. I’m sure he’s been banned from a few other sites more recently, but those are the ones I know of.

Alternatively, when you hover your mouse/pointer over a comment, in the top right a minus and down arrow shows up. Clicking the minus hides that comment. Not a “block” exactly, but at least you wouldn’t have to look at that comment every time you read through the comments…

    • LiterofCola

      That joke never gets old……………
      yes it does.

  • Good_Ole_Pinocchio

Same here. I’m waiting for the HTC One. The front facing speakers are a big plus for me. I get tired of cupping my hands on my phone just to get the sound to come forward. I don’t want to have to always plug in my headphones.

Me three. It’s the only viable option I see now. I just don’t feel like waiting months for something that “may” come out

        That’s why I love the Nexus 10.
